Steins;Gate's Cancelled Sequel — The Committee of Antimatter
It's now been a decade since MAGES had mysteriously cancelled Steins;Gate: The Committee of Antimatter, a single light novel which was planned as a sequel to Steins;Gate taking place 6 years after the original visual novel's true ending.
In the decade since its cancellation, MAGES and series creator Chiyomaru Shikura have not provided any details as to the reasoning behind its cancellation and thus we can only speculate as to why.
Very peculiarly, only 3 months after announcing its cancellation, Chiyomaru had announced Steins;Gate 0, which would be a full-length visual novel sequel to Steins;Gate that would later get an anime.
In this video, I give an overview of The Committee of Antimatter and the surrounding circumstances behind its cancellation as well as some personal speculation as to why they may have cancelled it.
As a bit of a disclaimer, I hardly had any time between the 10th anniversary of Chaos;Child and the 10th anniversary of The Committee of Antimatter's cancellation. I've been on flights that keep getting delayed and cancelled and that kinda left me stranded in a few random cities for a bit. I couldn't re-record any audio, so this video might not be my best work, but I wanted to make sure I got something out for the occasion. I tried my best given my circumstances.
P.S. That "S;G Antimatter Never" bit at the end is a reference to a video Steiner/Andrew Hodgson had made many years back.

    I only watched the anime adaptations (steins Gate and 0) and im yet to finish the vn on steam. I was shocked to discover that steins gate was part of something bigger "science adventures"... kinda lost now but it must be like same verse stuff. I thought it all ended in the anime. Now i think ill know the origin of reading steiner atleast lol

      Yeah, unfortunately the series' anime adaptations cut a lot of content to make the entries seem far more standalone than they actually are. These are all heavily interconnected works, to the point that I'd compare them to Jojo parts. But if you're interested, I've made a beginner's guide video to the overarching Science Adventure series!

    Very informative video, I had no idea about the existence of this sequel. It definitely raises some interesting concepts, and it's a shame that the Committee of Antimatter was cancelled... there was definitely a lot of potential where that could lie. But one thing I really enjoyed in this video is a look into the entire SciADV series and how it's sold. I am aware Chaos;Child had a poor release as an Xbox One exclusive which is an obvious shame as it's one of my favourite visual novels, but I didn't know it was *that* impactful towards the entire series as a whole (even if it may be just speculation). Really appreciate you shedding light on this

      Because they were only exposed to SG rules from only the anime at the time, not SciADV rules and context as this guy mentioned. Also, people don’t easily get hold of supplementary materials like he mentioned, so it’s easy to feel out of loop of broader context through extra details found in expanded material.

    Is your info on the original creators’ involvement with the movie’s production and writing legit? I can’t find an article on the movie detailing its staff list credit where they’re mentioned there. I only see Chiyomaru credited for writing some of the music, but no mention on involvement on the plot (If you could put website sources where you also got your info on series creator involvement, that would be appreciated)

    • @bassman.sharingan12341

      @@doctorpringles12 Yes, it is. Take a look at the film's credits and also the movie's accompanying guidebook if you're able to get your hands on it. Hayashi and Matsubara are credited for scenario supervision. And in the case of both the movie and its LN and manga adaptations, Chiyomaru is credited for creating and producing the movie's original story, like he always is for anything in SciADV. He's always the ideas man for the series plot in any of the major series projects. For Steins;Gate's anime-related content, Jukki Hanada is the series' scriptwriter - which is the case for the movie as well too. Hanada has also been involved in the creation of SciADV VNs himself, as he helped in making the scenario for Anonymous;Code.

    • @doctorpringles12
      @doctorpringles12 14 днів тому

      @@bassman.sharingan12341 Having the “original creator” credit could probably mean just that the movie is crediting the creation of the overall franchise to him, rather than a proper credited role in this particular story’s creation (like the “all characters originally created by this creator” credit like with George Lucas for example). I’m just curious of where to find an article that details his involvement in Load Region’s story apart from the music writing. Also that article from where you said “Load Region is a movie he really wanted to make”, where was that from?

    • @bassman.sharingan12341
      @bassman.sharingan12341 13 днів тому

      @@doctorpringles12 First off, this is not a George Lucas post-Disney buyout situation. Chiyomaru was deeply involved in the creation of Load Region of Déjà Vu and he has talked about it extensively. "Original story" in this case most definitely refers to creating the *movie's* original story, not just creating the original VN. In almost every piece of SciADV manga and non-VN side material, Chiyomaru is not credited for the "original story". If this was simply a George Lucas situation, you would see his name plastered over all non-O;N series side material and adaptations. But you don't. So when we see Chiyomaru credited for the original story in the movie's adaptations, we know that these credits are for the movie's original story. If they meant otherwise, the manga adaptation for Load Region of Déjà Vu just wouldn't have any story credits whatsoever since it just has credits for the illustrator and the original story creator. Secondly, I had included both the article title and the website name in that moment of the video lmao. It's Kiri Kiri Basara (or KKB), the SciADV-specific news coverage site. This article was a stream recap. Chiyomaru constantly runs his own Twitcasting livestreams, where fans can ask questions and whatnot. You can also ask him about anything you're curious about yourself the next time he hosts a stream! Anyways, the point is that the series' creators were all extremely involved in the creation of the film and plot points from it are used all throughout the rest of SciADV and other pieces of Steins;Gate side material. There's also content from pieces of series content that I didn't even mention - like Phenogram and its novelization, Mosaicism. Mosaicism ends off with them talking about them leaving that same exact "monochrome space" and heavily implies that the Phenogram Viewer itself is also beyond the load region.

    I always like to say that there are 2 types of Urasawa fans... 1. Those who know of Yawara 2. Those who don't know about Yawara, lol. Ranma has had a successful remake, so we can hope that Yawara gets a remake. Yes, I think Yawara should get a remake, haha. Episode 117 is the best in the series. While not a fav of mine I'm quite bond of Yawara and a good way to describe the series is that it is a mixture of Rumiko Takahashi + Mitsuro Adachi both whom were at their peak in the 80s.

      Fans of Yawara should definitely read/watch Adachi's works. They're not really sports series in the same sense as Slam Dunk as they focus a lot on the slice of life and romcom aspects. Even when they became more sports centric, those aspects are never lost. This is one of the reasons why I gravitated towards Yawara.

    It would honestly be sweet if MAGES (or another company that got permission to properly license the Steins;Gate property) somehow resurrected The Committee of Antimatter. I've always had the feeling that most of the fans want a mainline (not My Darlings Embrace or other side material) that would show us a more personal & intimate slice-of-life side of Kurisu, Okabe, and the rest of the lab as they mature into a relatively 'normal' timeline in a post-Steins;Gate universe. At least one final entry into the "Steins;" portion of the Sci-Adventure series to round it all off. How does Kurisu's and Okabe's relationship develop? What about Suzuha, Daru & Yuki? More info about what past issues Kagari has faced? A real flesh-and-blood encounter / interaction between Kurisu vs. Maho? How does Mayuri handle growing up & the changing relationship interplays between different lab characters & other minor characters? More development of other side characters such as Nae, Yuki, Moeka, etc.? Will this series connect more deeply with the rest of the Science Adventure series? And THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL: Does (main-timeline) Luka ever figure out how to handle a samurai's katana? ...so much potential here, if properly done right.

    I think MAGES going to insolvency is not only due to Chaos;Child flopping. MAGES is enormous and it hosts many games and music-related business. Chiyomaru not handling properly the company (including Chaos;Child) probably led to the great issues the company was suffering. With that being said, I agree that S;G0 is the main reason these projects got cancelled. They really needed a stellar product to sell really well. And, in all honesty, it was about time we got a visual novel that pulled the relevant side material in one place. I think another reason why it might have been cancelled is Occultic;Nine and Anonymous;Code. Chiyomaru back then was obsessed with making this parallel series, which turned out to be a part of the main series in the end. I am sure he had many fights with developers and writers about how to tie everything together. I am sure they are fighting even nowadays. On a final note, Committee of Antimatter was going to cast teenage Nae, Sawada (Robotic;Notes) and Rimi (Chaos;Head). I was very excited to see how everything was going to be linked..., but I guess we will never know. I am sure some of the ideas were used as reference for the interactions of LabMembs in Robotic;Notes Dash, but we still have to wait and see what happens... In a relatively recent interview, Chiyomaru stated that the characters of the series go through hell in 2026. I wonder if that is going to be the year S;??? is going to be set and if any of the Antimatter ideas will be shown there.

Instead, tell us 'that' happened before the story of robotics; notes in some way. They just leave it be Make player wondering what happened? I think the reason is that they choose not to let this novel out. Because they can't find a good way to make a story interesting, and maybe at that point, they want to create another sciADV title than just use the name of Steins;Gate. So they canceled it and tried to make another SciADV title and not continue the plot point that leave on robotics note elite anymore.

      Yeah, it's straight up the best entry in the series. The implications of that game are crazy.

      @bassman.sharingan12341 Even though I didn't like the soundtrack as much, the story and real world implications were excellent, especially since I'm quite the conspiracy theorist myself. Seeing them talk about the Vatican like that was very ballzy And CERN's Hadron Accelerator (in real life) is designed with a symbol that's the same symbol that's on the ground from a bird's eye view of the Vatican (the Anu Signature). And in Chaos;Head when they indicate that the Committee of 300 are outside the matrix in some way, it seems to imply that they are the same people with the Vatican's power to be outside of the normal world layer. I think they're all connected.

    I actually think it's BECAUSE Chaos Child is a 'filler" entry by a different writer. I much prefer it's character-focused writing and themes of humanity more than the plot, characters, and science-focused stuff of the other entries

    Amazing video bro. Without your beginner's guide to SciADV i probably would have never gotten into SciADV or played Chaos;Child at all which is now my favorite piece of media of all time along with Steins;Gate. You've been carrying the english SciADV community recently, really.

    Fantastic video! I think you have the greatest understanding of the writing and nuances of the series among all the youtubers who post about SciAdv. Regarding the music, Chaos;Child soundtrack is a masterpiece and while many pieces make it special (since you'd not find that many eerie or horrifying songs in other more modern SciAdv titles). For me what makes this OST shine is the main theme "World" and its variations. Her Worries or More Grief, for example, are the sad versions of the song, but they are still so different and full of power. Di-Sword of Sadness and Breakthrough are just absolute bangers. On a fun note, listening to the OST of Famicom Detective Club, the song "Memories" from the Girl Who Stands Behind presents the same motif as World. When I recognized this I checked the composer and indeed, the remasters were made by SciAdv composer Takeshi Abo. The original song was composed by Metroid's composer and it sounds veeeery close to World, but in the remasters Takeshi Abo made it even more similar. Famicom Detective producer says that it was an obsessed fan of the original games in Mages who insisted on Nintendo to produce the remasters and the sequel. Seeing the connection between Memories and World, I'd love to think it was Takeshi Abo though I have no proof for this.

    I think the most fascinating aspect to me comparing Takumi and Takuru (related to the delusion aspect) is how both want an escapist fantasy but in different ways. Where Takumi just wants to escape from everything out of feeling like he could never be accepted, Takuru's escapist fantasy is being raised above and being treated like the most specialist and awesome dude ever. While both are different dreams and inform their characters and actions in different ways, they're both ultimately a rejection of being a normal person - which the games ultimately frame as an issue. The core thesis of both chaos games is that "being a regular person with people who care about you is great actually." and there's something really beautiful and resonant about that I think (especially through the medium of visual novels, typically geared towards a nerdy audience aka the type of people most likely to fall into the traps of Takumi's and/or Takuru's mindsets who could use that kind of messaging the most. And this comparison is coming from experience as a "nerdy" girl that had a bad case of "not like the other girls" mentality as a teenager which is just the girl version of Takuru's right-sider mentality). But yeah great video! I love chaos;child and Takuru so much
