Hey Fishtube. I'm Stephen, husband, father, and keeper of many planted tanks. Join me and my child-like wonder as I chronicle my aquarium adventures -- breeding projects, DIY setups, high tech, low tech, medium tech, wtf-am-I-even-doing tech...
Stop by on Fridays at 8:30pm central for a fun live stream with fish-related games and prizes.
Find me on fishfam.link along with a bunch of other channels, and a livestream schedule, and details on upcoming events, and giveaways, and the newest videos released by the fishkeeping community on UA-cam.
We will learn together, but only if you subscribe, because I am probably confusing the heck out of the UA-cam algorithm. Sometimes there's music. Squirrel!

Replay, baby
The praecox would actually nip the puffers tail and run. The praecox fry are currently in with the puffer and are fairly rambunctious but he don’t seem to mind and just ignores them. The puffer is huge compared to them so they seem to leave him alone.
Good to know!! I've never kept puffers.
damn work... replay team 6 again
Work sucks!
Thank you Stephen and Kelley for another great instalment of WYPs, dwarf golden barbs are my favourite at the moment 😀, have a good week take care 🤗💙
They sound beautiful! I'll have to check them out!!
👍🏻👍🏻
Darn I missed it 😢
So will we be notified if the plants ship so we know to expect them ?
@@brantonlightcap6599 yep, I will send an email to the address you used to fill out the form. Most of them won't ship til fall, but we are still looking at breaks in weather here and there.
But your caught the replay!
🔥🔥🔥
What kind of platy is the one right after you said "live bearer most pit" it swam right behind the bright red one. The greenish one with orange nose and tail. I have some like this I don't know what they are but I've been looking for more for 2 years now. The dominant female passed away today and the males starting picking at eachtother and the Juvenile females too (1:11)
They were sold to me as "black neon" platies years ago, and I feel like I've seen them labeled as painted platies. I don't have them anymore, but they do seem to resemble the black variatus platy.
I've just used this method to make a background for my daughters tank - so far it looks awesome! Thankyou so much for the inspiration!!
Yay! glad it worked out!

is the polyurethane coat just a precaution? just wondering
@@isbiome yeah, pretty much, not that I really put a lot of effort into making sure there was a perfect seal against any potential toxins. But the background is still holding up in a plant grow out tank with fish actively breeding for the past 2 and a half years. I suppose the extra poly layer also serves as a bit of extra adhesive for the grains of sand that may be barely hanging on to the foam.
Thats so cool! 😮😮😮
Cool!😮😮😮
I love khuli loaches but their body shape to closely resembles red wigglers for me to feel comfortable attempting putting them in with the puffer. Also you said you wish you would have gotten more puffers from the start however if your original puffer was as friendly as your new one would you feel the same? I’ve heard from a few people that multiple is better than 1 but I’m afraid that if I do get more they’ll end up like your first one, shy and constantly hiding and not being worth the extra money.
I have noticed something happening lately with my first puffer. She's coming out a LOT more during feeding, and I'm catching her swimming around freely more often. I think the other two are making her feel more comfortable. Today I saw all three come out multiple times when they saw me pass by the tank. And you hit the nail on the head. I got two more because the first one was shy, and I was honestly a little disappointed. And since getting the other two, my enjoyment of that tank has increased tenfold! I'm gonna try to film another short soon.
It is cute..😊

I love Alex, but he talks so far over my head, I seldom understand what's going on for more rha. Half the stream.
What kind of puffer is more likely to do well in a "community" tank? I should have written it done. I don't have a huge pull towards puffers, but if I had one in a community tank, it might be worth looking into. (Keeping in mind, my version of community tanks aren't the traditional definition. Things can still get spicy once in a while)
Amazon puffers are said to be community puffers and prefer to be in groups. I see spotted congos like mine do really well. But if you have fish that will be aggressive or not care about the puffer's territory, the puffer will gladly rip that fish's face off.

I missed the greatest stream ever. Ugh.........
Eh, the sound was kind of crappy! Gonna have to remedy that before I do another one

Have more frustration after listening to this. Whew.😵💫
Sometimes it's better to answer questions 1 v 1, so I'm happy to help if you have any specific questions!
Oh, I remember this episode lol... There was a LOT of over talking.. Sorry!
Very hard water, 8.4 plus PH. Looking for some plants (stem prefered) to grow in it. Currently low light no co2.
Knowing your KH would be helpful, because there's a threshold where everything is going to be an uphill battle -- like 15+KH is going to be a different experience from 10KH, and I'd say both values can be seen in very hard water. But in general, some of the more adaptable stem plants include Hygrophila corymbosa and augustifolia, Bacopa caroliniana, Anacharis, limnophila aquatica, ludwigia repens or ovalis, plain old rotala rotundifolia, pogostemon stellatus octopus... all of them have some degree of varying light requirements. I will say that "low light" and stem plants are usually not a good combo. They're very prone to getting leggy (losing lower and mid leaves) so they can't be planted very densely in low light tanks. Hopefully some of these will work for you. Worst-case, valisneria and crypts are great!
Just did a KH check and it was 7? Seems wrong to me, but if true I should be able to grow "some" plants? I currently dose with 50% thrive. Java fern is turning black. Stem work exactly as you stated.
KH of 7 isn't terrible. That's pretty close to what I'm working with at home. Unfortunately, light is going to be your limiting factor with stem plants regardless of KH. If you're doing regular water changes, don't be afraid to up the dose of thrive to a full dose, maybe 1-2 times a week. Root feeders and root tabs are your friends, especially if you're noticing algae problems at higher fert doses. Java fern is one of those plants touted as easy in low-tech because it survives, but it seldom looks good without the perfect conditions for maximum nutrient absorption. It's a pretty thick plant, lots of structure like anubias, and they grow slow and require a lot of nutrients, especially potassium. The problem is, in a low-light low CO2 environment, the bioavailability of nutrients and plants' ability to photosynthesize is limited. Java fern tends to respond to sub-optimal conditions by using the energy from its existing leaves to make little babies to send downstream in hopes for a better life. But also, if it's turning black, is it really bumpy texture, like clusters of black dots on it? If so, it could have that dreaded java fern disease.
Replay crew...I always learn from these two...
AMAZIN SHIPPING!!!
Great stream Stephen and Kelley ,have a fab week, take care 🤗💙
Thanks, Debbie!!
