This is a 1988 wood mizer LT30 manual mill. I stripped it to nothing but the frame left. Had it sand blasted. Primed and painted it and replace everything else with new parts. A lot from wood mizer, some not. I spent about 5 months of free time bringing it to where it is today. The engine is from harbor freight, it’s a knockoff 25 hp Honda. All of the hydraulic controls, hoses and cylinders are from WM. I ordered them to match a 1998 so I could have the 2 plane log clamp. I had to cut and bump out the frame for it. The turner is self built from scratch. Log loader is mostly from WM. The setworks are micron sw-350 pro. All electrical is my design. I wouldn’t trade it for a new Lt40 off the line.

A 10 year old log
Sawing a cherry log that was left in the woods for 10 years. All of the sapwood has rotted off. It is very crooked, but there may be something nice hiding in there.

Pretty Cherry wood. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked it. I thought it was but I don’t really think it came through on camera.
You have a great sounding voice with the delivery of what your presenting and your narrative fits the video really well! I enjoyed this very much, thank you.
Thanks for watching, I hope you checked out the rest of the channel as well. I appreciate your kind words of support.
Sap wood ? Is that the yellowish stuff ?
Thanks for watching. Yes it’s the outside layer of actual wood that’s a lighter color.
I'm sure your wood miser has paid for itself, in the lumber you've been able to "not" purchase. The price of the stuff is out of this world today. Good on you.
Thanks for tuning in.
got 4 red oak logs from a tree cut down 20 months ago. have been letting it dry. my plan is to use for drawer/door fronts in a kitchen/dinning room i'm in the process of fabricating. test cuts have produced some very nice looking slabs.
From tree to finished product. I love it.
The small Band mills are nice but don't get me wrong I prefer the circular mill for faster and squarer cutting
It’s possible that circular mills cut more square but I doubt it. I can cut some pretty square material. Especially if you compare it to the stuff we use to get from a local circular mill when I was a kid. My brother built his house from band milled lumber.
I love to watch and listen to people that are experts at something about which I know little. Great vid.
I appreciate the compliment. Thanks for watching.

Good job! I have a DK 5010 with one set of remotes with a detent for the backhoe. I'm going to install the DKA109 remote kit which is spring loaded to operate a hydraulic top link.
Be sure to plan a flow control. You can’t feather the lever adequately. Little short jabs move the implant moves violent.
Nice! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome
Glad you enjoyed it?
Glad you like it.
Y ou say you used a 10 degree blade .is this your best blade you use on oak
You can cut most wood species with a 10 degree hook angle. Lower hook angles like 7 and 4 degree are often used for hardwood like red oak. The lower hook angle takes a smaller bite.
Where are you from? What state. Some where in the south I’m guessing
The southern part of the Ozark’s in west central Arkansas.
Awesome looking wood 💯
Thanks for sharing, I am glad you enjoyed it.
A nice time saving feature to have on this mill is the ability to cut a vertical slice without having to turn the lumbar twice. Of course that would be a fairly expensive feature, adding cost to the finished product.
A lesser expensive way is to have a chain turner. With it a log can be turned either way. However on big logs it wouldn’t work very well.
Not bad lumber for a fire wood log. I think you made a good call bringing it to the mill. Pete
As it turns out a lot of it had powder post Beatles though.
@ bummer😢
Liked & Subscribed !!! Good video, your voice over narration was interesting. You have a nice set up there, it looks like fun. Thanks for the show. Pete
Thanks Pete! I’m glad you like it. A half a million people have. I have not been able to figure out what makes it so much better than the other I have created though.
Great video, I really enjoy how you explain everything you are doing throughout the video. 👍👍
Thanks for turning in! I try to be as descriptive as possible so everyone can understand the process.
Interesting work. Would have thought some form of metal detection would have been used. Read that eco terrorists used non ferrous spikes to harrass.
I have two of them. Either one only works for a few inches deep. I once looked for a water regulator a foot deep in the ground. About a pound of brass. And never picked it up. A 12 inch log scanned on 4 sides. You could be assured that there’s nothing in it.
@@hillsidemill Thanks for reply. Disappointing results. Would there be b etter results with expensive metal detectorist/treasure hunter grade detectors that prob cost at least $300 or perhaps 500 or 600. Expensive option that may not work well.
Nice Cherry Slabs.
I’m glad you like them!
👍
Glad you like the video! Thanks for watching.
Some time when you have time , can you video the importance of centering the Pith on the Pine for a better quality of lumber?
Yes I can probably make something for that. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hickory is the hardest wood I’ve milled. That was a challenge. Enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching. It was a challenge for sure!
I shaved a 3 inch kiln dried maple slab 3 days ago to make a grinder stand base that didn't rock and wouldn't move. Dried lumber is a lot harder to saw than a green log for sure.
Yes I could imagine dry maple would be pretty tuff. I was surprised to make 48 feet of cut with the same dull blade
Pretty low board feet per hour production rate 🤣 Good job!
Thanks for watching! Happy new year!
Can you describe how you mounted your laser on your sawmill? I have a LT40 that is 1 year old and I want to put a laser on it. From you video I cannot tell exactly how it is mounted. Did you make or buy your mount?
Yes I built a bracket. I tapped a 1/4 inch hole in the angle iron on the mast. Cut a bolt super short.
@@hillsidemill Thank you. That looks like a more stable spot with less vibration.
Wow! That is extremely hard lumber to cut. Too bad you couldn’t use the sawing lubricant. Enjoyed the video. 👍
Yes hickory is a tough wood to cut. I was sawing a thick slab that was dry throughout.
I really like how you explain the process! Most other sawmill videos just give some basics, but you are most comprehensive. Thank you. Nashua, NH
It’s not as easy as some might think. The editing process is very time consuming. Most videos I have 2 to 3 hours in editing. It’s hard to justify the amount of time required for a few dollars per video.
I enjoy your videos. I like the way you explain what you’re doing as you go. It’s very helpful to a novice like me. 👍
I try to be as descriptive as possible so everyone can understand the process. Thanks for watching and hopefully liking it.
Yea. Same here. Alot to learn. Subscribed
Good job Mr Roe. How far up did that weird grain go? Looked like a healed over scar of some sort.
Just a foot or so. Maybe where the two trees rubbed together for a time. It was like a bark inclusion but no bark.
Good job 🎉🎉❤
That is nice . Great job- all schools should have an area like this what a great idea
Yes it’s been great so far. The grant for 100 tons of gravel is coming at the first of the year. That will make it usable all year. Around here in January and February the ground freezes and thaws most days and makes a sloppy mess unless it’s gravel.
Why the external alternator on the Predator ? Did the OEM Woodmizer engine have an external alternator ? If so , I assume to supply enough voltage to all of the hydraulic solenoids ?
The preditor puts out 8 amps. The motor that powers the hydraulics pulls from 50 to a 150 amps. The 100 amp alternator will keep up but just barely. I have an amp meter, at the end of the day I let it sit and run until the meter gets down to 2 amps.
Lawrence, how did this video get over FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND views? WOW! I'm impressed.
I don’t know! I have spent a year trying to figure it out. If it’s something in the video I think it’s the part where the log gets pulled off the trailer. It could be the “ lot of problems “. It went public a week before Christmas. On Christmas Eve it was getting close to the thousand views a hour. It had really slowed in the spring, but mid summer it took off again. It’s been running 20 to 50 thousand views a month since. ????? The video is worth more than the lumber.
@@hillsidemill Good for you
Nice log and great sawing. Is that a yellow pine or a white pine ?
Thanks It’s loblolly southern yellow pine.
@ would that be the same as the red pine we have here in Ontario or is it a different species do you know?
Good video Lawrence. Merry Christmas Dave
Thanks Dave and Merry Christmas to you!
Good job. Merry Christmas!
Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Is the streaking on the face of the wood after a cut ur water mixture track? Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to you and yours. Peace Joy and LOVE of Jesus too.
Yes the water is sprayed on the top and bottom of the blade in short pulses that are adjustable. Merry Christmas to you as well
This log, beautiful, you have wonderful wood.
Glad you like my wood. I like it too.
Sounds like the good ole boys in the farming area of central Illinois where common sense is taught at home.
Yep
Enjoyed the video and the stress test demo. 👍
I appreciate you watching! Thanks for the comment
1st cut or 2 I was thinking how much bigger was the butt vs the top end? Sure gonna be a lot of wane. But then after the cant was mage it is the camera angle that made it look like the far end was still bigger than the start end! lol Optics area funny thing. ;) Fire wood! I wish I had them cause it's gettin cold up here in Western Illinois. Just had our 1st ice storm last night. Already had 2 small snowstorms this month. Keep on cutting lumber and makin videos of it. <thumbs up!>
Thanks for watching! I’m glad you liked the video. 1.5 inches of taper. I raised it about an inch also a tiny bit of crook. They are installing fiber internet in my area and it the process destroying the phone lines. I got starlink internet this week. A month without internet sucks.
Good video. I've had similar results with white pine. It looks usable after milling but I think the wood fiber strength must be starting to deteriorate with time and exposure.
Thanks for watching! I think you are right. I’m going to get it milled sooner in the future for sure.
❤❤ killer job, great save ❤❤
Thanks for watching.
Around this area, a red oak that large is usually hollow. A friend of mine made a dining room table and 6 chairs from 1 red oak tree the table is 4ft wide and 5ft5" long.
Most any hardwood nearing the end of its lifetime is susceptible to becoming hallow. This red oak came from along a creek. It was larger for its age because of this but not especially old. Someday I would like to try my hand at kitchen chairs.
@hillsidemill for a seat use 3, 2"x10" not 1 large piece. Wood glue and biscuits to attach together. For decoration he put mahogany bowties at each connection line
Very pretty wood
Thanks!
Not all Miller's are willing but I bet you could get a few bucks out of your blue stained wood and other wood your gonna just burn or chip from wood workers/crafters, the plus side is of course not having to handle it anymore they pick it from pile load and haul it away and meeting new people with grate talents that can maybe trade out your trash for there talents, making gift shopping very, cheap and easy not to mention keeping the waist down, if somebody else can turn your trash into their treasures that is a very good thing! The world could use less trash no matter what kind it is! Thanks for video and taking the time to entertain my suggestions, hopefully👍🏻 may God Bless you and your family Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Happy belated thanksgiving! My internet has been down for a month.
Aha!! Shoulda been patient...LOL!
Thanks
Oh...or is it lubricant for the saw?
That’s it.
Love watching this! But curious...what is that liquid coming out of the log? Is it just sap?
It’s water used for lubrication. I do have it turned up a little too much.
Juvenile wood. Sap Wood. 2 terms that I have zero idea of what is being discussed, but, yeah he does know his stuff. Interesting.
As a tree grows it builds layers on the outside each year is another layer. Those newest layers are what provides the canopy nutrients, they are lighter colored, these are the sap wood. As you cut deeper towards the center of a tree you are going backwards in time towards the part of the tree that was sap wood when it was young of juvenile. Both of these woods have a different density from the rest of the tree and therefore will shrink differently.
