This is a 1988 wood mizer LT30 manual mill. I stripped it to nothing but the frame left. Had it sand blasted. Primed and painted it and replace everything else with new parts. A lot from wood mizer, some not. I spent about 5 months of free time bringing it to where it is today. The engine is from harbor freight, it’s a knockoff 25 hp Honda. All of the hydraulic controls, hoses and cylinders are from WM. I ordered them to match a 1998 so I could have the 2 plane log clamp. I had to cut and bump out the frame for it. The turner is self built from scratch. Log loader is mostly from WM. The setworks are micron sw-350 pro. All electrical is my design. I wouldn’t trade it for a new Lt40 off the line.

Very pretty wood
Not all Miller's are willing but I bet you could get a few bucks out of your blue stained wood and other wood your gonna just burn or chip from wood workers/crafters, the plus side is of course not having to handle it anymore they pick it from pile load and haul it away and meeting new people with grate talents that can maybe trade out your trash for there talents, making gift shopping very, cheap and easy not to mention keeping the waist down, if somebody else can turn your trash into their treasures that is a very good thing! The world could use less trash no matter what kind it is! Thanks for video and taking the time to entertain my suggestions, hopefully👍🏻 may God Bless you and your family Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Aha!! Shoulda been patient...LOL!
Oh...or is it lubricant for the saw?
Love watching this! But curious...what is that liquid coming out of the log? Is it just sap?
Juvenile wood. Sap Wood. 2 terms that I have zero idea of what is being discussed, but, yeah he does know his stuff. Interesting.
What a relief to get away from narration generated by ai (artificial ignorance). This makes the video much more enjoyable and understandable 😊😊😊.
Like Your vids But have missed a few this past year. Life in general is the culprit. Be Blessed
Glad you enjoyed it. You can catch up by going to the channel.
Nice work! I always enjoy your videos. Thanks. 👍
Thanks for watching. Glad you commented. I enjoy sawing cedar.
Good job and speedy too!
I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for turning in and commenting.
You have some nice wood.
Thanks, I think so too.
You have a nice mill enjoy watching
I’m glad you like it. I do enjoy the mill.
You made real nice boards
👍
Thanks
I really enjoyed the "Play by Play" narration! Very informative . well done. Thank you
You’re welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Hot rodded LT30!! Nice job! :-)
I really enjoy it!
It turned out beautifully!
Thanks
This video was an editing challenge. I almost had to scrap it half way through. So there are a few technical issues scattered throughout.
When I was young I was helping my dad with firewood and a mouse ran up the I side of my jeans
Thanks for sharing.
I wonder if a metal detector could be used prior to every sawing to find embedded metal pieces.
Yes you can. Most will pick up small amounts about 6 inches deep.
Really enjoyed the video, and am very envious of that Woodmizer !
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I love the mill. It’s night and day from my old LT10. Would you mind sharing what it was about this video you liked over others?
I thought that blade was having a hard time around there and my thought was right you had one of those nails in it it's too bad
Yes those nails really suck. Especially when they are so far from the ground.
Nice
Glad you liked it!
Good job
Thanks
16:44 Thank you.
Thank you for the comment. I’m not sure what happened that you liked but I’m glad you did. If you see this let me know. All I see at 16:44 is starting the engine.
Good job! About when I'm feeling the hole is done the tape measure lies and says there is a foot to go 😁
Well as I approached the two foot mark the soil picked up a little moisture and started digging some easier.
What a nice donation of your time and skills!
I appreciate the kind words, it was fun to do.
He’s good at those honey dos.
😊
Thanks
Don't forget that in today's marketplace, all that scrap wood can be sold as firewood or starters. Of course you can sell it of wholesale to a smaller business.
Yes kind of, slabs are a hard sell. And you can’t give away sawdust. I can give away some planer shaving.
I have never worked in the timber industry & am now 65 years old. The bulk of my work experience was in the oil & gas industry in East Texas & North Louisiana where there is a lot of timber. Recently, I have been watching several different sawmill videos & find them to be very educational as well as relaxing; Thank you & know that I will be watching yours often!😊
I appreciate the comment. There will be more sawing videos coming soon.
Cool! Enjoyed the video. Looking forward to the next one. 👍
Glad you liked it. I will try to make the next one even better!
Nice sign
Thanks
Well done, Lawrence!
Thanks I’m glad someone liked it.
I like your mill. Pretty fair red oak. Where are you located? I'm from Alabama and we have several species of oak here in our state. Hardwood more plentiful in N Alabama. I have 80 acres of planted pine. I planted in 2002 and thinned 2 years ago. Now waiting on power poll mature trees.
North Central Arkansas. I hope the pines are not loblolly. They are too fast growing. The pine I sawed my mill shed from I helped plant on my father’s place. I got all the ones over 24 inches. The logging crew didn’t want them. I had about 40 percent that were just not straight enough to be used after drying. I’ve cut plenty of native pine with very little culls.
Those short slabs will Make a good butt for a rifle or shotgun. Les England
Nice to see something useful from what most would not touch.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it.
I enjoy your videos very much. Please keep making them. 👍
👍
Another question, where and what is a tow board? 7:20
Toe board’s are the black rollers in the bed near each end. They raise the log to level the pith. So you cut a wedge shaped slab from all four sides of a tapered log. Without them you would cut all of the taper from the first to cuts. The grain in a board would not be very parallel with the board.
Love the smell of cedar being cut, also any furniture with cedar in them.
“Furniture “ coming.
Please enjoy this positive happy comment in order to tickle your algorithm I like your videos keep on coming you're doing great
Thanks I appreciate that.
Hey, you're back, long time no see. I don't think I would have the patience to saw cedar with all the waste with little reward.
Yes I’m back, I’m just a part time sawyer at the moment. I still have a HVAC company to run and it requires most of my time during the summer. I also tore something in my arm that needed to heal.
This is the first in a playlist of building a cedar sign we will be installing in the last of the series. Be sure and keep a lookout for the rest of them coming soon.😊
👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for sharing all the small but important details, you do a good job!
You are very welcome!
Thanks for watching!
Hope you’re doing well…haven’t seen any new videos from you lately.
Yes doing well thanks. New video coming this Friday.
@@hillsidemill I enjoy your videos, you explain what your doing and why you're doing it, makes it easy to understand. Thanks
One Q, does the log stop or log dog have a problem with the cross shaft, strong enough to not bend when your turning a big log. Trying to figure out how to put one on my mill without cutting the frame. Saw one kinda like yours with a 2"X4" square tube, and nylon blocks to make it slide easy back an forth. I going to use a Hydraulic motor and tank like dump boxes on trucks use. Will work great, and 12V so can run off the Bat.
No problem bending anything so far. The crosswise rod is a hardened chromed shaft like a hydraulic cylinder. The older version used a square tube though. The cutting the frame wasn’t a big deal though. I precut the inner side, then welded a longer piece of square tube across the area. Finished the cut. Welded the new piece. Removed the temporary piece. Capped all the ends. Checked and made tiny adjustments to the bed.
Your a true wizard great job, tried to see how you drove the hydraulics , and nice to see you painted every thing 👍👍👍👍
I purchased all the hydraulics from wood mizer. I could have sourced stuff cheaper but one day I will sell the mill so the next guy can find the exact parts he may need.
That sap wood was crazy, but I guess that's what can happen when an oak grows on its own with no other trees around it to make it compete for light and grow straight.
Yes it was strange. This tree was injected 4 years before I fell it. Some parts died off in the first year and some didn’t. Their thoughts were to let the top fall out because it was leaning towards a house. This wouldn’t be my way to deal with it. I don’t think there was enough time to change the sap wood in the 4 years.
One big a.. log. Only shows from little acorns, great oaks grow. Interesting presentation.
If it's as bad as all the complaining you have done during milling the log, why mill it?
If it were simple, easy, straightforward milling you would have never seen the video. I have several straightforward videos that have 10 times less views. But thanks for the comment it helps more people see the video.
I’ve Liked/Subscribed/Commented - the Holy YT trinity for you Sir 😅 I really enjoy your easy style and method of editing . Look forward to checking more of your content sir ✊ 👍🏴
Wow! I am so glad you enjoyed it. More to come soon. Thank you.
Question folks, would a metal detector used for treasure hunting passed over the log detect the metal in the log?
It will but, typically they will reach about 8 inches with a fairly large object. Typically about 6 inches and the bark is 1 to 2 inches thick. You also need to have a dedicated area that’s metal free to check them.
