Cams Campbell Reads
United Kingdom
Приєднався 30 січ 2024
Some of my earliest memories are of reading-the joy of a trip to the library as a toddler with my mum; discovering Enid Blyton in the 70s; then fantasy and sci-fi; The Book of Three in P6; rainy afternoons in high-school English class when the teacher wanted to skive so told us to read for a double period. I want to read more deeply like I used to before 50-hour audiobooks at 2x became part of my life. I want to slow down, take it in, and talk about what I'm reading in order to grow and connect with other book lovers. So, here I am. Hello.
My Top 15 Books of 2024
A look at 15 books I read and rated five stars in 2024.

Every Parent Should Read This Book!
Переглядів 54621 день тому
The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt is a quick and easy read. A lot of its points are common sense, so it really shows how we are going against common sense in our parenting decisions. It's not our wholly our fault-the social media platforms are maximising profits and harming not just our children and young people. Pass the vape, would you? Yeah, that kind of profiteering. It's like big to...

Odyssey Announcement - Read-along over Two Months (Sep/Oct 2024)
39:54 love that scene in W&P! Thank you for explaining that context of the Russian soul theme, very interesting.
Found this video at the right time! Got this book as a gift from Christmas and now I can't wait to read it. Great review 👍🏼
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is an all-time favourite of mine. I really liked War and Peace. Will check out the other one in your top two. Happy reading!
I have to pick up Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. It just has to happen, I’ve heard too many good things!
Love the video, Cams! I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of it before, but there is an amazing musical called Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812, that is based off of a 70 page segment of War & Peace. It’s a very interesting (and strange) mix of Russian folk/classical music and indie pop/EDM! If you’re still in the War & Peace mood, I’d highly recommend giving the Broadway cast recording a listen! It’s so weird but awesome 😂 and I’d say over half of the lyrics are text straight from the book!
The only book I've read in there is War and Peace. But most of the others are ones I'd like to get to. I suggest checking out the audio book Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson. Happy reading.
I have tried reading A Clockwork Orange twice and gave up both times. The vocabulary is basically unreadable and I could only tell what was going on from context clues. There is a point where he is with a woman and I couldn't tell if he murdered her, SA'd her, made love to her or took her out for dinner.
Terrific video Cams, glad to have been able to join you on some buddy reads in 2024 - hoping for more in ‘25!
Saw my old hotel on your WorldCon footage. (The Moat House) It *may* have been a World Con where I saw my coveted Bionic Bigfoot from THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN. I drooled. I was aroused in all kinds of unspeakable ways. But then reality slapped me in the face like a bucket of Highland Spring Water. £89. And how would it fare during the Transatlantic voyage? Not a bucket. More like a firehose spray...
I used to love the Six Million Dollar Man back in the day.
@CamsCampbellReads Loved both the shows. They pretty much raised me. Had the Steve Austin figure. Even conned my mom into getting me Jaime Sommers, The Bionic Woman. You're talking to the chappie who bawled like a wean when she "died" at the end of her first arc.
Looks like a stellar year! I'm currently reading W&P for the first time now and am loving every bit of it. I have Figes on my shelf as well - I hope to get to A People's Tragedy this year
Yeah, War and Peace is one of my favourites for sure. You won't read it just the once! I'm having a Sebag Montefiore year this year with the history books, though I still have a a Figes book on the shelf to get too. My history TBR is getting silly! Right now I'm reading Catherine the Great & Potemkin and having a good time with it.
Ελπίζω να κυκλοφορήσει και την Αινειαδα στο μέλλον ο Στίβεν Φράι ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That would be great!
Oblomov doesnt have just ADHD. I think he has something like cognitive dissengagement syndrome.
Great video! I have a question around Stephen Fry's version though. Does it follow the same structure as the Homer original? For example are all of the 24 books reflected and covered in Fry's version or is it just one big telling from his interpretation?
No, Fry's book is a retelling of the story and doesn't match the timeline of Homer's text. That's partly why I found it so helpful as it covers parts of the story from the Iliad that I wouldn't otherwise have known about.
@@CamsCampbellReads Thanks for this, it inspired me to give it a read and it truly was brilliant!
@@connorsnelling Nice one!
I'm glad you are taking part in Historathon. I enjoy your contributions. Just make sure you don't overdo it, you have so much to do that I worry you will get burnt out. It's so easy to do in the current climate. Do you recommend Appelbaum?
Thanks Clare! Yes, you make a very valid point on the burnout thing. I'll keep my eye on that. I enjoyed Red Famine, or perhaps 'enjoy' isn't quite the right verb for such a horrific topic, but it was well written and seemed thorough.
@CamsCampbellReads that's good, I just worry that you get down days, you are better thinking when relaxed, that's the Cams I recognise and admire for his perspective and insights into literature and history. I just want you to enjoy your life, not be on a treadmill. I have a brother in law with bipolar, and he suffers from ups and downs you wouldn't believe. We all have to cultivate our mental health and happiness. You are a jolly person at heart, so don't let the routine grind you down. We have had days on end of gloomy, grey , dreich days, that can cause me to be a bit lethargic. Today we have sun, so I went shopping and for a walk it causes a chemical reaction in the brain that cheers us all. I hope you don't mind me acting like a close friend, but we seem to be very alike. My partner commented the other day, that you sounded like me when talking about books, ie same tastes.
@@battybibliophile-Clare Thank you for this lovely comment, Clare. It sounds like you know me pretty well. You're very insightful! I know that my projects will slip as my mood dips. They always do. But I've not stuck to anything for a long time like I have to the reading and content creation around books over this past year. The end of January will mark one year on this channel and it's been quite thrilling, as well as surprising to myself that I keep showing up. I have, however, undoubtedly bitten off more than I can chew for 2025. I just can't seem to help myself. But one book a quarter for Historathon should be manageable and good for me. More than that would be a struggle.
@CamsCampbellReads You're welcome. I think you have a handle on yourself, as we get older we learn about ourselves. I think one a quarter is excellent, enough to participate, but not a heavy burden.
New to your channel! Love it! 🎉 May 2025 be a bountiful year for you🎉
Same to you!
Sounds like a fascinating book. I may have to check it out.
So far I’m enjoying it. It’s not super dense.
I'm surprised that you don't have a storygraph instead of fable.
I have both. StoryGraph just wasn't great for running groups.
I also started a fable very recently! I was also bummed when I saw that Fable was mobile only but I will say that the app was surprisingly intuitive and easy to use! Looking forward to participating in historathon!
Your channel is essential viewing whenever I see a new video pop up. You have such a calming presence. Happy New Year!
Thank you. that means a lot! Happy new year!
I really like your channel! I'm halfway through Dominion. Quite good.
Good to hear! Thanks for watching!
The book sounds fascinating Cam. I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. I am going to be reading Tom Holland’s book Rubicon.
Nice one. I have two other of Tom’s books because they were on sale in the Kindle store for 99p.
I’ve just finished The Fraser Trilogy a few days ago and, I decided to take a little break and read a few shorter books then I’m gonna get stuck into The Liveship trilogy! Can’t wait as I heard such good things. I’d like to have finished the trilogy in the next 3 months. One of my goals is to upload content and build a community on my channel 😊 I don’t have anyone who I’m close to who is as into books as I am so I’m excited about making connections. Another goal is to really absorb and reflect on the books I’m reading even if it means reading less books than I’d like to. Rather than speed read one book after another just for the numbers. Another goal is to read lots more books from around the world and appreciate the culture and worlds depicted by the authors. I’ve also got some history, political and other books that relate to current world events which I’m interested in learning more about. Good luck with your goals and looking forward to seeing more from you! Happy New Year to you 🎊 🎉
Great to meet another Hobb fan! Your goals sound great. Hope to see some videos from you soon!
The purring cat really set the mood. Wonderful goals
Willow loves a good video appearance. Thanks for the kind words.
So I’ve watched on and off as I could and now I’ve watched all of the video I want to comment properly. It was like being transported back to my own past (I’m 55) such wonderful listening. Our first books are the same. This makes me want to do the tag which I previously thought I wouldnt or couldn’t as I’m not new to new tube but new to transitioning my channel into the book tube space…. But you’ve inspired me .thank you for this lovely video and the time spent can’t wait to catch up now on the treasure trove of your channel.
Thank you for the very kind words and for taking the time. Hope you do the tag. I've love to listen!
Thank you, Cam. All the best in the New Year.
Happy reading! 🎉 Heres hoping you achieve your goals 😊
Thank you! You too!
Great to find you
Thanks for stopping by!
jordan peterson...?!....
Yeah, I read 12 Rules for Life and quite liked it. Have you read it?
Bleak House has been in my TBR for quite some time but the length is just intimidating, haha. If you're going to read it, maybe I will. Happy to see Willow♥
Yeah, it is kinda long to be fair. Not as long as a Stormlight Archive novel though, so I'm good. How about we read it over say three months, nice and slow?
@@CamsCampbellReads Yes, I guess I could handle three months, but no promises😂Happy New Year!
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on fools fate 👀
Yeah, I'm excited for that! thanks for watching Mair!
Right as I was about to comment about my excitement to read Moby Dick you mentioned me! Grateful for the mention and we are indeed kindred spirits - два сапога пара
I’m looking forward to Moby-Dick. Perfectly timed on your part! I look forward to hearing how you enjoy War and Peace. I thoroughly enjoyed this year’s reread. I hope to make a video soon. It’s an easy favourite of mine and I’m sure you’ll love it.
Happy reading! May you realise your goals.
Thank you! You too!
Bari Weiss and Tom Holland are racist idiots
Such great goals! So glad you chose Bleak House, it’s the best in my opinion. I too, will tackle Moby Dick this year. Plus a chapter a day in Les Mis. I’m also reading with you through the humanities. One goal this year is to physically write down the definition of every word I come across in my reading that I don’t know. It’s embarrassing how often I skip over them.
Ooh, I loved Les Mis. It was one of those amazing books that I almost gave up on and then was utterly rewarded by persevering. I love your goal of writing out definitions!
Lots of good goals Cam and steal away haha. Ill have to start actually checking out other discords and substacks to see what they are all about. I've only read one Russian classic which was Master and Margarita so I'm not sure I can weigh in on much there haha. Great vid
Substack is great for bookish content. There’s so much good stuff on there.
I hope you enjoy Moby Dick. I read it earlier this year for the first time and it is easily a new favorite.
Good to hear!
I have yet to read my first proper DICKENS novel. (A Christmas Carol is a mere taste, I'm sure...) 8:18
Great Expectations was excellent and, after reading it, I enjoyed the many and varied adaptations.
I wouldn't dismiss The Symposium. From other research, it is apparently a key book to read. I enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
The Symposium is up for next month. I did just download the Poetics to my Kindle and plan on reading it today and tomorrow.
I read The Last Chairlift back when it was published and also enjoyed it a lot. I thought the screenplay sections were tedious, but the emeritus jokes kept making me laugh. I was surprised by a few things; one, that Irving in now his advanced age has kept his distinct authorial voice. If you picked up this book not knowing he was the author (not sure how that would be possible), after reading a handful of pages I would guess it as Irving. My other surprise was that even though the story seemed uneven, it did go by quite fast, was enjoyable, and I think I gave it on Goodreads 4 stars as well. The ghosts seemed to not quite fit in with the rest of the story; so I did not really get that part of it. But so much of the rest of it brought me back to Garp in a way that it almost felt anachronistic. Good for John Irving though, and may he write several more novels before he is through!
Yes, his voice is his own for sure. That's what keeps readers coming back I think. He just gets people and relationships I think; he makes them feel so real, with all their flaws and insecurities and strengths. His characters know who they are and they are unapologetic about it. I should read Garp again-it's been many years since I read it for the first time.
Merry Christmas Cams. Money dick has always been a book I’ve wanted to read and will try to in 2025. Interesting review
I note the Doctor Who scarf. Well-played, mate.
Good catch! My daughter crocheted it for me for a present last year. I love it!
Very important video Cams. I have two girls (age 3 and 7) so very much at that stage right now. I’ve ordered a copy following your recommendation as, it is “urgent” as you suggest. Thanks for all your videos this year Cams. I’ve really enjoyed your chats and I’ve taken some great recommendations away.
Thank you Gary. It means a lot to receive such kind comments.
Australia is currently looking at bringing in legislation to prevent social media from being used by under 16 year olds. From the sounds of things, they've put the onus on the social media companies to create the means to do so. We're not sure how it's going to work out yet, but I thought it was interesting given the points you mentioned at the end. Really enjoyed this, thank you for sharing!
It'll be interesting to see how that plays out. On the whole I'm against government regulation, but to be honest I don't really see any other way. Parental guidance only works if parents are onboard, but I'm as guilty as anyone of getting caught up in a doom-scrolling cycle. We legislated against tobacco and alcohol for kids and I guess this is no different.
Sharp haircut Cams! ❤ amazing video as always
The worst part is that there is less crime now. Why do they want to keep us in a false sense of paranoia?
I just finished this one today. I love KSR, he's probably my favorite living author. I enjoyed that this book was more about history-as-a-discipline than just a cool "what if" scenario. It presents a few "theories of history" through narrative and dialogue that are very elegant and compelling- especially his musings on tragedy & comedy. Beautiful prose, wonderful insight, and relatable characters.
I loved this book. I read it in 2002 as I am a big AH fan. This book has a great Point Of Departure, the only similar POD is The Gate of Worlds by Robert Silverberg. It does cover a lot of interesting histories and how they might interact. A Queen in Islam made me think of Matilda and her battle with Stephen in England. I keep wanting to re-read at some point. The cover design is very good. Philip Jose Farmer's Two Hawks from Earth has a POD of no North and South American continents.
Thanks for the follow-up suggestions. Much appreciated!
@@CamsCampbellReads Poul Anderson's A Midsummer's Tempest is a fun read as well. POD Shakepeare is the real histoiran.
Good, timely video. We’ve recently joined with a number of other local parents in deciding no phones for our kids until the age of sixteen. The hope is that having fewer of their peers with phones will ease their FOMO somewhat. It’s a number of years off, so hopefully the decision pays dividends. 🤞
That's what I would do if my kids were younger. Well done! It will take action from parents before anything will change.
I have heard good things about this book. It sounds like an important read. I have a teen and this is something I think about quite often.
I think that's a very american case, that certainly wouldn't happen where I live in Europe. Kids play out in the parks all the time with their friends. I dont see anyone ever just approaching them to ask where their parents are because its completely normal to just play outside. Its also kinda funny to say that kids need more childhood independence but then forbid them all kinds of things. For a lot of kids with bad situations at home, the internet can be a good place. I grew up right around the time that mobile phones started becoming more common and internet started entering more people's homes. The problem is that a lot of parents are simply not as familiar with the internet so they don't know how to navigate it and how to have their kids navigate this. But regulating this is very bad and authoritarian. Some kind of anonymity is a crucial part of the internet, I'm not giving up my anonymity and linking my accounts to my government ID because other people refuse to raise their children and want to rely on the government to do that for them. At the end of the day, its up to parents (and extended family) to raise kids, not up to the government. Maybe a better solution then would be to give parents a book like this rather than have the government tell us what we can and cant do on the internet.
