Autumn Photography at Finnich Glen, Scotland.
Devils Pulpit in Finnich Glen Scotland is a beautiful gorge cutting deep into the Scottish countryside, steeped in myths and Legends that I've wanted to photograph for years. In this episode I will talk you through my thought process on the decision I make while taking the images in today's video.
The Autumn colours filled my camera sensor with vibrant Golds and rusty hues of Orange and Reds Saturating my senses with mystery and intrigue!
The main part of the gorge was a little out of our range on this visit, due to conditions, but the part we could get to didn't disappoint.
I meet up with John Mckenna once again @JohnMcKennaphotography who's local knowledge is second to none. He spoke of the legends and mysteries of the area and of how The Devil's Pulpit got its name, which adds so much to the experience of photographing this amazing location.

One of the best things about photography is spending time with you friends, family and loved ones. Sharing in the wonder of image making. As a little project over the half term break, we were able to put together a story and go out and film it ready to shar...

Macro Photography opens up a whole new world to the photographer, especially when you are used to hiking around the beautiful countryside looking for compositions. I first started looking around for a new lens to include in my kit, and wasn't sure which way I should go. My main lenses are a 24mm GM prime lens, and a 100-400 GM lens for my landscape work, and I was thinking of getting something ...
Creative Techniques for Black and White

We are so familiar with the rule of thirds and the golden ration in our photography, but another little layer to think about when composing an image would be Perspective. After taking the initial photograph, try taking a step back and recomposing the image from a different or unique angle. Lower down, higher up, may be a different focal length, to give the feeling of space or confinement to the...

This useful tool is slightly overlooked when dealing with composition. We are constantly reminded to follow the rule of thirds both vertically and horizontally when composing our images, but i think dealing with the depth of the images is also important to draw the viewer into your image. Another location on my wish list that I've avoided/missed (its those steps that put me off I think). really enjoyable as always Simon and fantastic images too. You had me laughing at the composition thief 🤣 I really must take you up on that offer of a meet up sometime. 👍
This is not the Devils pulpit, you have to go to the other entrance. Pity! Your images are fantastic.
Hi Derek yes you are quite correct, on this visit it was alittle difficult to get down to the actual pulpit due to condition and amount of people enjoying a day out down there. Plans have been made to return better equipped. I included the devils pulpit name in the title thumbnail to identify the area as I felt Finnich Glenn might get a little lost as it’s not as well known. But I did use the name in the main title. Thanks for your comment 👍👍
You guys every time I think I’m improving you do this 😊 oh well back to the drawing board. Great images !!
Glad you liked the images Malcolm. Thank you for the encouragement too 😊😊
great video mate. I need to get mine finished now!

Quite honesty I'm blown away by this. Beautifully filmed and I know just how much time, effort and thought is needed to make something like this. Hats off to you. Bravo Simon (and the girls). 👍
Thank you so much Mr Sugden really appreciate it. Was so much fun to film… must leave more time next time!! Haha hope you’re keeping well.
@@SimonJerromes All good here. I've been dragging my feet again putting out videos but should be some coming in the next week.👍
Yeah it’s been tough here too. Work has been relentless. Am in Scotland tonight and hope to be meeting up with John McKenna tomorrow so hopefully have some content to share. DM me if you fancy heading out sometime, would be great to meet up with you if you fancy it.
@ Will do mate. Sounds great. I’ve just got back from a little family trip up to Scotland. A little photography and vlogging done. Going back up again at the end of the month with more serious photography in mind 👍🏻
Look forward to seeing your vlog 👍👍

Bloody brilliant!! Great mix of photography of the landscape as well as telling a story. Could see new use of editing and sounds which must have been such hard work and you absolutely smashed it :) bet the girls loved getting involved in that. Great acting and what a great story! 👏 always fun to do something a bit new and out of the box
Thank Lara, the girls really enjoyed it. 😊
Hi Simon. I can't t wait for your review of this lens. It looks really good.
Hi Dennis, I’m itching to get out there again with it and get lots more images but not had chance yet!! It’s a beautiful lens by the way ! Do you do any macro photography?
@SimonJerromes Hi Simon. Yes I try to do some macro photography. I took some shots of some ferns unraveling in my local woods in the spring.
Do you share your work anywhere Dennis, would be great to see it👍
Hi Simon. A really lovely video. It reminded me of the Aberfan colliery disaster, in the 1960's.
Yes it kinda reminded me of that too. Hoped the story wouldn’t be too similar. The girls enjoyed them selves and it was great to see them take a real interest in making films. Glad you liked it 👍👍 hope you’re keeping well
Nicely done by all of you
Thanks Paul much appreciated 👍👍
Loved it! Quite a story. And in our beloved black and white, oh yeah.
Thank you so much Carlos I really appreciate you comment. Something a little different and we had a blast putting it together. Can’t beat a bit of Black and White!! 😊👍
that was great Simon! Great story, well shot and the girls played their parts perfectly! Well done everyone!
@@JohnMcKennaPhotography cheers John appreciate it. It was so nice for the girls to be so involved… even doing the voice overs .. great fun 👍👍
Excellent you're a real story teller Simon!! 👏
Thank you Andrew. It was a lot of fun to make and the kids enjoyed it too and it’s something they looked forward to sharing👍👍
Great images Simon, the Laowa lenses are great just curious why you went for the cine version of this lens?
Hi Smiffy good to hear from you. There were a couple of reasons I felt this lens was for me. Firstly it needed to be robust, with various projects coming up I felt this needed to be high on the list what with its metal body. Another reason I didn’t pick up the normal laowa 100mm lens everyone gets is that the element at the end of the lens looks to be open. If you’re under slinging the camera, so it’s close the ground I felt there was a chance of small bits getting in the end. I understand you can put a filter as protection on the end, but I just felt this wasn’t for me. Also the image quality coming out of this thing is incredible. I thought being a manual lens would be some kind of hindrance but I couldn’t be more wrong! With the x2 macro too I seems perfect for what I have coming up! I hope that goes some way to answering your question 👍👍
Wow! Seriously beautiful pics in this video!
Thanks Lara glad you enjoyed it 😊😊
great video mate. Some cracking macro shots there!
Thanks John. It’s been awhile!!
It's wonderful up there, great shots!,it's a fair old slog to the top in one session ,consider parking at Deiniolen if you go again ,it makes life a lot easier ,I really enjoyed this ,thanks
Thanks for the tip, I’m definitely going back there again it was amazing. I parked in the bus terminal halfway up to the left of the site. I will check out your suggestions for my next visit. Glad you like the film 😊😊
@@SimonJerromes thats the best spot -I wrongly assumed you'd parked at Llanberis !
Hi Simon, just an FYI. You may want to look at your image at 2m 59s. It looks like you've edited with a mask and you've missed some areas. The v-shape between the branches is a different shade than either side of the branch, and some of the edges of the left branch are off too.
@@PaulWilkinson Hi Paul yes I am aware… well spotted…. I didn’t notice it when I first edited the image and it wasn’t until I had included it in the film along with another image that had masking issues and I watched it back on a large screen that I noticed it. By then The video had been published. Haha lessons were learnt and a closer inspection of my masking technique has been implemented! It’s a great learning curve!! Thanks for the comment really appreciate it. 👍
Great to see and hear your thought processes - love the gallery at the end too!
Thank you Simon much appreciated… hopefully it made abit of sense!! Haha 👍👍

Stunning black and whites. Some really incredible shots in there. Of the boat shots, I think I liked the first one (7:15) the best. Stellar composition and subject. All three are really good, as well as some of the others.
Hi Brian thank you for your comment. Yes I like the first of the boat shots but the curve of the reflection in the second shot I find really appealing which made me rather indecisive about them!!!!. Glad you liked the images in this video thank you 👍👍
Awesome video n pics. I always learn something new from you Simon, thanks
Hi Jeremi thank you so much for your comment. So glad you enjoyed the video. Makes it all worth while if somebody gets something out of it 👍. Apologies for the late response as am away for a few days break with the family. Funnily enough we are back up in Scotland and planning a trip down the Skyfall rd for tomorrow!! No camera on this visit sadly!!
Hello, Simon. You are in an incredibly beautiful environment. It screams take a picture of me. And you do the environment justice with the beautiful photos you take there. Really, you deliver a beautiful piece of photography there. I am jealous of the beautiful environment that we do not have here in the Netherlands. Also, the explanation you give with each composition is perfect. You show that you know what you are doing, friend. You did a heck of a job, my friend. Antoine.
Hi Antoine I’m glad you like this video. It’s such a magic woodland. I popped there again the day before yesterday, as I’m down in the West Country for a few days visiting family. If ever you find yourself over here in the UK feel free to contact me and I’ll gladly show you few good places to take images. 👍👍
Hello, Simon. I can't make a choice. All are strong black-and-white photos for me. What one lacks a bit, you will find in the other. They are really very good. The post-processing is also very strong, everything is well-balanced and not too much. A great piece of photography and post-processing, friend. The second is very good, nice structure and the contrast is perfect. The front is a bit less than the back, but that is because it is painted. It must be said that you had the circumstances on your side, the sky is exceptionally strong in all the photos. The photo of the ship is magnificent, friend. That should be hung on a wall, it is a large format. This is really a gem. It is as I said in the beginning, I can't really make a choice in terms of quality. Sailing has always fascinated me, so that is why I tend to lean towards the photo of the ship. But from a photographic point of view, they are all the same. This is a lesson in delivering high-quality black-and-white photography, Simon. Thanks for this video, mate. Antoine. (from the Netherlands)
Thank you Antoine I really appreciate such a lively comment. I’ve not had chance to get them printed out yet but it will be nice to see them large enough to put on the wall! So glad you enjoyed the film. Hope to share more with you later in the month. 😊👍
Ah summer in Scotland. Net on your head for the midges, gaiters on your legs for the ticks, boiling hot one minute, chucking it down the next... That's why I wait for autumn 😄 Beautiful shots and nice and punchy!
@@DarktableLandscapes haha thank you . Definitely going to make plans to go in Autumn. I went in January this year and the snow, frost and on occasion clear skies made for some amazing shots👍👍

Thank you Michael glad you liked it. Thanks for the comments on the other videos too! Really encouraging thank you 👍👍👍
Great photos do you use long exposure and what’s your go to lens ?
Hi Rohit thank you for your comment. I didnt use any long exposure settings on these images but i always have my camera on a tripod so the exposure settings could be on the slower side and its useful because i did exposure bracket a number of these shots, normally 5 images over a +1/-1 stop of exposure and blended in Lightroom. I only have two 'goto' lenses...24mm GM and a 100-400 GM..although i recently remaber i have a Ziess Battis 16-70 on a vlogging camera i no longer use, but i still forget to take it out and use it!!!
Hi, really enjoyed your black and white photographs. I loved the contrasts and the details that show up so well in this medium. I always feel that black and white photography captures the essence, the soul of the subject. Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome. Thank you for you encouraging words 👍👍

Aujourd'hui, la couleur, c'est agréable avec des effets colorés et autre, mais rien ne vaut le noir et blanc pour l'ambiance, c'est bien les nuages, cela meuble le ciel, et accentuent l'effet de la photo.
Thank you Pierre I agree 👍👍👍
Hi Simon. It's great to see an all black and white video. When I take some shots I always try to change the photos to black and white. Sometimes they work better than the colour ones. Also I like all 3 of the boat shots.
Hi Dennis good to hear from you. Yeah I like abit of black and white. I do have another black and film planned over the next few weeks which I hope will pan out well. Glad you like the Boat shots it was such a beautiful ship just had to add a white vignette to add alittle class haha 😜 👍👍
Simon, this was an enjoyable video. The way you talk your way thru the shot, is helpful. "Seeing in black & white" is quite fun. I love shooting B&W, but not every shot works in B&W. A break from color is fun. First time watching, now a subscriber. We'll continue watching "over your shoulder" from Olympic Nat'l Park, Port Angeles, WA., USA!
Thank you so much I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I’m pleased you find my approach helpful as there loads of videos giving advise on composition etc. So happy to have you on board and am looking forward to share more with you. Would love to visit the USA one day, it’s top of my bucket list! 👍👍
Nice one Simon, really enjoyed that, the ship certainly worked in B&W but loved the 3rd image of the Tree and barn framed 👍🏻
Thank you Darren really appreciate that. Glad you liked the video. I was pretty lucky the vessel was moored so close to shore and I very nearly didn’t take the shot. Glad I turned around and found a place to ditch the car! 👍
Hello, Simon. I came to your channel because of your black-and-white work. I think it is really very good and nicely balanced. I almost only make black-and-white work. This may be because I had a darkroom in the film days and made my own work. And I am a printer by profession so I worked with color every day. I have been photographing for almost 35 years now and I keep coming back to black and white. Sometimes I try color but that comes to nothing. And if you photograph in black-and-white you have always good light. It can be different but it is always good to get a good black-and-white picture. You have a beautiful and varied channel that I will definitely visit more, especially for black-and-white work. Kind regards from the Netherlands, Antoine.
Hi Antigone thank you so much for your kind words. I’m so glad you like my work. I would very much like to see the work you e done over the years. Do you specialise in any genre? Landscapes, architecture or portraits??? I would like to visit a darkroom and see how printers carry out their craft. Such an amazing thing to see. I’m glad you like the channel, it can be rather difficult to find topics that are different from the many other great videos out there! It makes it all worth while receiving comments such as yours many thanks Simon 👍👍
I really like the images but looking at them on my iPad, they seem to be very high contrast. Is this a conscious thing done by you or is it my iPad?
Hi thank you for your comment. Yes the images are alittle contrasty one in particular is a little over cooked shall we say for my taste but I was trying something new. There are a few tweaks I’d like to do to the images where the Lightroom masks aren’t quiet doing their thing and it’s not until you put them up on a big tv you actually notice them. I’m enjoying the learning curve and the constructive comments are helping me a great deal. Thank you 👍👍👍
I quite like the contrast. Many subjects when done in black and white can look flat or even muddy. I find this true in landscape especially. Too many similar colors, mainly greens. Bumping up the contrast keeps it interesting. For me it’s a job well done. 👍
Thank you Bill much appreciated. I try and stay clear of the ‘HDR’ look where possible although I did include an image in that style in the video, and prefer the dodge and burn style. I think maybe because it’s been used since the beginning of time! 👍👍
Simon I really enjoyed the video I wish I had a black and white head to put on like yours all of the shots were stunning, as for the shots of the ship I can’t decide maybe the one framed by the trees but the jury is still out. Thanks again for the video.
Hi Malcolm glad you enjoyed the video, I do enjoy abit of black and white photography every now and then! Yes I’m torn between the ship being framed with the trees but I also like the vessel complimenting the tree too! I also like the shape of the Bow and its reflection!!! Frustrating haha 😜
