5 Things to know BEFORE you buy a ESP LTD Snakebyte

So I came across a thread on Facebook where a beginner was asking the group, “What things do you guys not like about the LTD Snakebyte?” I based this video off of some of the replies. Really the only thing I wished was different, and that was the scale length. That said, here’s a video on the 5 biggest complaints I've seen on the James Hatfield Esp Ltd Snakebyte. As always, my advice is to play ...

I flipped a coin to decide wether i buy it or not. I will get this guitar next month.
I bought the blue one last week it's pretty sweet.
I think so too… I’m gonna put at least 10 hours on it before a review but so far, I really like it
Seriously, you’re gigging w/ 5 guitars, 2 of which are Flying V’s and/or Explorers? 🤔
So what if I am 😛🫡
@@FretboardDiariesthen I’ll consider the source when weighing the validity of the review!
You do that then 👍
Thomann ship cheaply into UK .
Does that produce a clanking sound when the switch is activated?
Honestly it’s been a long time since I did this video, but I don’t remember it doing that. If it did, I would have mentioned it in the video. With that said, that clanking popping sound is common in budget pedals that use cheaper switches, so it certainly may be an issue. Best of luck 🤘🎸
@FretboardDiaries thank you very much.. I've been watching all your saphue reviews ...and it was thanks to you and your reviews, I was finally able to make a small rig out of saphues. More power to your channel..❤️ GBU Subscribing from the Philippines.
how do i search a video for non budget guitars. There is no way to word it without it only showing me budget guitars. I dont have a budget but want to purchase smart anyway. Everyone seems to think price to perfomance ratio is more important than pure performance quality. i dont care if it cost 10,000, I want a good guitar, not a cheap guitar
I just paid 200$ used for this same guitar in Canada and with 3 to 4K $ guitars in my collection, this has become my daily player. i love it.
I have modded mine to the hilt but I play it frequently… Definitely a killer guitar for the money 🤘🎸
I’ve played one of the Snakebytes, and played an MX220 many years ago….aside from the cutout on the lower rear bout, and the barbs on the forward horn and headstock there’s not a whit’s worth of difference. Both guitars mentioned are originally based on Hetfield’s mid-80’s Gibson Explorer “So What”(which that run is known as the “1984 Explorer”)….
I’d imagine they’re quite similar. Explorers have been Het’s favorite shape for as long as I can remember. I saw someone posted the other day of a rare custom shop ESP with the Wolf to Man inlays. Really a beautiful instrument. I do think the notch out of the Snakebyte adds about an inch to the overall size, but they’re definitely close
I’m a longtime user of GFS passive pickups, have been curious as to how the REDactive series pickups performed in comparison to EMGs. Seems like they’re closer in comparison than I might’ve figured…..
They’re pretty close… I still prefer the HetSet, slightly better attack, but for the money and value, GFS is hard to beat… Maybe at some point I’ll do a video comparing them… Thanks for the idea 🤘🎸
@ you know, this response alone is enough to convince me to push the “Subscribe” button…I look forward to a comparison video. Funny enough, I recently picked up a similar string-through Jackson Kelly and am heavily considering wading into the active pickup “pool” after 35 years of passives in my other guitars. Wanting to separate ad copy from reality…..
Hey man, I really appreciate the sub and comments… This guitar will featured soon in a locking tuner install vid too. I love the compound radius neck on this thing, but one of the tuners is busted, so as soon as it’s up and running, I’m gonna do that comparison vid. Again thanks for watching man, much appreciated 🤘🎸
I just ordered mine a few minutes ago ago. Can’t wait
I love mine… Since doing this video, I’ve put Activr pickups in it from GFS, I have a full vid in the channel if you’re interested… What is really killer about this guitar is the compound radius neck. It’s really killer 🤘🎸
Why is this even an issue. Even on a budget guitar that shouldn't be a thing.
It’s a very common issue with guitars under $200… Even Squiers have this problem. They have to get the price down somehow, and when you consider that at the time of this video, this guitar was like $120 shipped, it makes sense.
@FretboardDiaries no it doesn't. They are unplayable. A friend just bought one, that's why I found this video. Unacceptable.
Okay man, than it’s advisable that you spend a bit more money on a better quality instrument, because this is a very common problem on sub-$200 guitars 🤷♂️
I bought one 6 years ago sold it and regretted selling it. I bought another one last year and it is a keeper. Like in the video, I had to file the fret ends and I lower the action by filing down the bridge to get the action really nice and low. It is an awesome guitar for the price 😊
Damn that's pretty
Came to this video to see if you had any thoughts about the material of the yokes. They don't look padded, but rather hard plastic, and I was wondering what kind of potential issues that could cause if the guitar rocks side-to-side at all against it. Musician's Friend has it as a Stupid Deal of the Day today for $65 shipped, with the 2 extra yokes.
I haven’t had an issue with them… I now have two of these racks, and the only time the guitar moves in the rack is if I’m moving the rack around the room. Even then, it’s a non-issue. I like this racks a lot, for the money, they’re hard to be.
@@FretboardDiaries Thank you!
🙌🙌🙌
Only problem is there made out of zinc alloy, so they may not last very long
eddie van halen signiture its my dream guitar
I played one the other day at a different guitar center and had to pull myself away from it. 😂 Seriously killer guitar
The cheapest guitar I've ever gotten is free. And it's actually surprisingly nice.
Can’t beat the price 🤘🎸
Sounds smooth & great. Is this similar to The Horse Ultimate Drive?
I can’t be certain but I’d be willing to be it’s the same circuit…
That is wild that happened within a few weeks of a move! I hear ya re: fretguards. The ones I've found that I do like (particularly if I'm only working on a couple frets) are the MusicNomad Grip guards. But generally I'm with you, I like to tape off the entire fretboard. Polishing is a form of meditation or something for me.
@@ArtOfShredYT interestingly enough, it wasn’t just this guitar… I had 3 guitars with busted E strings, and the action on my HB Fusion T is so wildly off it’s unplayable 😂 😂 So needless to say I have some setting up to do 🤦♂️
@@FretboardDiaries whoa wtf!
Anyone else set these up the same way with no luck?
Gotta ask, what was your issue? I’ve put these in three different guitars at this point, with very little modification needed without issue. Perhaps I can help
@ no sound comes through, but when I turn up or down the volume it just screams
🤔… Do you have the wiring diagram from their site? Just curious. That would be the first thing I’d double check. I’ve gotten it wrong before and put the whole thing back together… and that was with single coils that couldn’t have been easier 😂 🤦♂️ It’s also always possible you got a bad pot. Reach out to them and see what they say.
@@FretboardDiaries yea I went directly off the diagram, thanks for linking it btw I couldn’t find it anywhere, then I double checked it off your video. The only difference between mine is I wired it into my battery pack, my soldering was fine if it wasn’t nearly half of my stuff wouldn’t be working since I personally fix it. I’ll take videos and contact them, thanks
@@FretboardDiaries I got sound to come through with one of the pickups being perfect my current issue is now one of the pickups is super fuzzy sounding, which is weird I’m guessing it may be the toggle switch because I have another guitar that I ordered all the parts for that doesn’t have this issue, same pickups. What do you think?
Scarr usually finds all these guitars have level frets - which is something that most people don't vwant to do. It's really a good deal.
Interestingly enough, Scar reviewed this guitar on its first run and gave it a terrible review. I know because I watched it before I received this guitar. I specifically looked at the issues he had to see if this guitar had them and it appeared like Fesley fixed them. That’s one of the reasons I like and work with Fesley. They are actively looking to get better, they seek feedback, and they act on that feedback. That’s a rare find with Amazon guitars. Most Amazon budget companies are just looking to pump out cheap guitars and get them sold… I’ll have another Fesley review coming in the next month. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching 🤘🎸
@FretboardDiaries My memory is lousy. Maybe it was the strats that had good fretwork? But yes, I hope they are improving. I don't mind one or two frets being up but I don't want to do the whole fretboard.
@ Indeed… and he’s done numerous reviews of Fesley guitars with others scoring very well… It was this particular model that he had an issue with. That said, it was clear from the one I got, that they addressed the issues and they responded to him on the video as well. Either way, I’m really stoked that folks can get a guitar like this for the price. When I was a kid, that was unheard of, so it’s nice to know that kids can get their hands on a good guitar for a budget price…
Every guitar has its origin printed on the back of the headstock, not so difficult once you know it (I wouldn't care anyway)
Good advice and demo video. Thank you.
could you get fender staggard tuners and ditch the string trees,? might be a different design though.thanks for showing new ways of doing things.
You can usually just click on the picture of the backside on the headstock There is the country of origin printed
I am wanting to change the nut on my te-20HH. Can you tell me which replacement nut you used?
So I didn’t change the nut on this guitar, but I’ve seen a lot of guys giving a company called GraphTech some high praises. I’m not sure exactly which one you need, but there’s some HB modding groups on Facebook that always seem to have the right answer 🤘🎸
I see another’s teachers use different tabs, but yours is much better for us the beginners. Thanks a lot for share this tutorial!!!
Awesome man, I appreciate the feedback. 🤘🎸
How is the weight on this guitar, i used to own a Dean ML and that killed me I'm 5'8 and have been looking at a comparison between this and the E-II EX NT
The weights not too bad. Light enough to be comfortable but heavy enough that it doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy… I forget the actual poundage but it’s not bad. I had an old Aria Pro Explorer that weighed a ton… 😂… This one is comfortable weight wise
Help pls, my stop tail screws are stuck, and just dont move, i've tried lubricant and nothing, help pls
🤔… So I did a little google research, thankfully I haven’t had this problem yet, and the typical responses seemed to be to try a very drops (not a lot, just a very little bit as to not harm the wood underneath) of Marvel mystery oil and heat up the post with a soldering iron. To be honest, I haven’t had this problem yet, so I don’t have any personal experience with it. Hope with helps, best of luck and if you get them unstuck, respond here with how you did it 🤘🎸
@@FretboardDiaries thanks!
4:25, nah nah nah, what 2 are u talking about? it's not 2 but 3, wait 4, 5, 6, better check it out anyways but its not as little as two. I tried 4 it's same shipping so you could make the already cheap even cheaper
I’ll have to check that out now… Back when I did this video, it was 2 guitars, then the shipping price went up… Could be Dangerous to my bank account if true 😂
@FretboardDiaries 😀 btw man, how is the stock setup after you set it up by yourself, how's the tuning stability of the cst24t using the trem, no added parts just stock parts with but setup by the end user?
@ Honestly man, I’m not sure on the CST… I currently own 3 HB’s… A Fusion T, and ST20, and a TE20HH sbk… All three had surprisingly good setups. I have full reviews on the channel, but all three performed really well out of the box
@@FretboardDiaries I think you should get one, since you can order 3 or more for same shipping 😀
@ 😂 Dangerous… 😂
What cleaning material did you use for the fretboard? I read that composite material gets tacky after a while from sprays made for hardwood fretboards. So I wanted to see before I grab mine in a few weeks
Oh man, it’s been so long I don’t remember the exact brand… This was a VERY light cleaner, that has never left any fingerboard tacky… That said, if you look through my channel, you’ll find other cleaning videos where I use a cleaner, then a conditioner. A conditioner can ABSOLUTELY leave the fretboard tacky for a little while, particularly if the fretboard is a board that uses a filler, like a Roseacer Fretboard… So the short answer is, NO, if you’re using a simple cleaner, a fretboard shouldn’t be tacky. If you’re using a conditioner, it’s possible depending on the fretboard materials…
Thanks for the video!! Is this bigger than an Explorer?
In my opinion, Yes, because of the cut out shape… Not by a lot, but certainly feels a little bigger
such a great guitar. After putting in a JB I choose this over my Charvels most of the time. It is pretty sad since I paid 300 for the HB and 1000.00 for the charvels.

I have just the bridge on a Jazz master works great.
The button screws adjust the tension in the mechanism. Try that to loosen the stiff ones! Haha
Haha yeah I’m aware of that… The tightness was in the gears and not fixed by adjusting the button screws unfortunately. This is pretty common with budget tuners, so no real surprise here, and it wasn’t a deal breaker. They just weren’t quite as smooth as the others.
Loosen the nut before taking the screw out would be a smarter move. Just saying
China made.
I'm just now unboxing my bridge & vibrato tailpiece combo - $65 shipped, no permanent modification - kind of seems like a no brainer. I'll put it onto a kit semihollow I built as an experiment. I've never had a whammy on any of my guitars before so this will hopefully scratch that itch. Mine came with just one felt pad, I'll probably mcgyver something from the fabric scraps pile to protect the top. My package did, however, contain another item - it looks like a nut locking device? Another undocumented mystery. Your two videos - this one here and the roller bridge - have been very helpful. You're the Kenny Gioia of Guyker!
I got the harley benton progressive series i has a real german flyd rose when i got it it took a while to get it but it is the best guitar i have and you will pay more for the flyd rose than i gave for the guitar, and when i unboxed it the b string was out a little bit set up is perfect and i love it!😅😅😅😅
I'm a beginner and I'm getting some Guyker tuners for my Epiphone SG special on advice from a friend, I don't want to mess it up so I'm taking it to Guitar center for installation since they're close to where I live , I've heard good things about Guyker so I'll give them a try .👍
I definitely recommend not doing it yourself if you’re a beginner or if it’s the only guitar you have. One thing I would tell you at some point, buy a really cheap guitar, and learn to mod it that way. For instance, Donner had a strat on sale last week for $65 shipped. That is the ideal guitar to learn to mod, put tuners on, file/level fret, pickup swap. That way, if you make a mistake, or can’t get it back together, it’s no big loss… It will help you in the long run to learn how to mod and setup your own guitars Lastly, make sure you order the correct tuner type… I believe your SG is typically a 3x3, not the in-line 6. Be sure to order the right ones. Best of luck man 🤘🎸
@FretboardDiaries Yeah it's 3×3 and they're Red/ Gold for $69.00 , couldn't find the same at Ali but they had a nice selection, thanks for reaching out , your post helped alot. Happy New Year to you and your family .🙏
@ right on man, hope you and your fam had a great New Year as well 🤘🎸
I just relised Harley benton strats and donners have the same headstok shape?
That’s interesting… I just ordered a $65 Donner so we’ll see. I don’t expect much but who knows these days.
@@FretboardDiaries donner is hit and miss (apparently their some of their 200$ -400$models are great .?)..I was just wondering if both Harley/Donner necks are made on the same cc machine ?
@ probably a good chance they’re made in the same place in China or Vietnam… Many times those plants make guitars for a bunch of different suppliers. I have an HB strat so I’ll take a closer look when the Donner arrives
I have a white Snakebyte, a black Irob Cross and a satin black Vulture. Next up for me is a Greenie copy.
The Vulture 👀 🎸… On my shortlist of guitars that if I find one for the right price, I’m in
Doesn’t nut lubricant dull sustain?
No thankfully but If you don’t want to use nut lubricant, you can just use a pencil and just line the inside of the nut slots with the pencil. This seems to work well for a lot of folks too.
