Conversation Practice in Serbian
In this video, we’re practicing real-life Serbian conversations! 🎉.
Inspired by Lucrezia from Learn Italian with Lucrezia, I’ve created an interactive dialogue exercise to help you feel confident speaking Serbian. Here’s how it works:
1️⃣ Listen to a full dialogue between two students learning Serbian (check out the transcript below).
2️⃣ Practice along! I’ll read one person’s lines, and you’ll fill in the blanks for the other.
Here is the transcript for the dialogue I've read:
A: Zdravo, kako si?
B: Evo, dobro, A ti?
A: Nije loše. Koliko dugo učiš srpski?
B: Oko 2 godine. Treba mi za posao.
A: Tvoj srpski zvuči odlično. Gde radiš?
B: Radim u jednoj kompaniji u Beogradu. A zašto ti učiš srpski?
A: Učim srpski zato što želim da živim ovde. Odakle si ti?
B: Ja sam iz Nemačke, iz Berlina. A ti?
A: Ja sam iz Engleske. Zašto želiš da živiš u Srbiji?
B: Sviđa mi se način života ovde.
A: Slažem se. U Srbiji je sve mnogo bolje nego u Engleskoj.
B: Srećno sa učenjem!
A: Hvala! I tebi!
We’re covering a casual conversation about learning Serbian, working in Serbia, and life in general. In the mock-up dialogue, you’ll get to insert details about yourself-like where you’re from or why you’re learning the language.
Want to practice even more? Type your responses in the comments, and I’ll check them for you!

Thanks a lot 😊. Now, I can have basic conversation in Serbian 🇷🇸
@@Largespeakerman8226 hehe, yes, Serbian people will be impressed if you use these expressions!
@@gospeakserbian Thanks ma'am
Odlično ❤
Hvala puno ❤
Хвала вам 🌸🌺🌷
"I will show you phrases Serbs use a lot" Proceeds to begin with a disappointment phrase
Sugar?
That looks delicious 😋
I am also learning Russian and Serbian together! They're both beautiful languages 😍
I love this
How do you say in Serbian “ cholesterol booster” ? 😊
Holesterolski šok :)
😂😂😂😂
To je to😍
I would appreciate subtitles in Serbian
Spanish native speakers or learners should be actually familiar with this concept, “svidja mi se” is literally translated to Spanish as “me gusta” where “me” is receiver, so to speak. Great lesson
Хвала❤
Merdevine :D
My boyfriend is from Serbia, and I want to speak with my Svekrva without a translator 😊 will start watching your videos to learn hopefully fast!
There’s an app called “Preply” where you can learn one on one with a tutor. I’ve been learning for 2 years and I’m mostly fluent now. It’s really cheap too
Thank you! Great class😊❤
Hvala vam
Wonder about the history of the usage considering the contrast between blue and blonde (yellow)
Isn't it genitive case that expresses possesion?
@@catalinilie306 Hi, yes, genitive also expresses possession. Different cases can have the same function. For example, you can say ‘Ovo je drugo dete mog brata’ (= This is my brother’s second child; ‘mog brata’ is genitive) and you can also say ‘Mom bratu je ovo drugo dete.’ (= This is my brother’s second child; ‘mom bratu’ is dative). We achieved the same meaning with two different cases :)
Constructing complex sentences is ahead of my learning level but I understood the concept you're explaining here and svida mi se 😅. I'm finding one of the most interesting things about learning another language is the way that it makes me think about how my native language (English) works.
@@Alice_Walker Yes, slažem se (=I agree)! New languages open up new perspectives onto other people but also ourselves.
Hvala!!!
I’ve been trying to figure out the context for the dative case for quite some time now. This video helps tremendously and you simplified the dative case clearly. Hvala puno!
@@michaelmartin9447 Hvala puno! Drago mi je! (Dative in response intended :))))
Dang hotels were cheap back in the day
Ja sam iz srbije
How do you conjugate the words jedni druge. Its many ways to say it like: Jedno drugom Jedan drugog Jedni druge Jedni drugih Jednog drugog Jedne druge. How do you know when to use wich??? 😅
tesla’s was a croatian not serbian. i bet you won’t be very happy with this fact. born in croatia and not in serbia.
Tesla was born in Smiljan, which was part of the Austrian Empire at the time and is now in Croatia. His parents were Serbian. He was ethnically serbian.
Tesla never put a foodstep on Serbian ground. He went to school in Karlovac than went to Graz and Budapest... He is also on the € Coins from Croatia.
First Comment 😅❤🥰
To me it seems similar to the Italian “ecco”, would you agree?
Dobro
I'll be in serbia in a few weeks . I wish I got more time to learn atleast a part of the language
Please do you explain the 7 cases in serbian?
Zdravo! I'm Japanese learning Serbian. Your channel is amazing and so helpful. I'm curious, what if I find people who have blue hair? Do you still say plavu kosu?
Zdravo i hvala! Yes, for people who have blue hair, we would also say "oni imaju plavu kosu" (they have blue hair). Then we would determine from context if we really speak about blue hair or it's just people who are blonde. Hope this helps. :) Lep pozdrav!
@ Hvala puno! This helped me a lot❤️
On mora da radi na crvno. In English, He has to work in the black market (Mora da radi na crnom tržištu). In English, 'in' covers a location that is not enclosing the subject. But to specify enclosure, English may use 'within' (unutra). Serbian would use 'u' for a location that encloses the subject. Npr., Mora raditi u čeličnom kavezu (He works in a steel cage). This distinction is made in all the Slavic languages: position on top of the location (na) versus position within the location (u). English formerly distinguished between 'upon' meaning 'on top of' and 'on' meaning 'attached to something vertical, as a wall. German retains this distinction using 'auf' and 'an', npr., 'auf dem Tisch' versus 'an der Wand' (here, Slavic uses 'na' for both).
Zdravo, what scares me is those new vocals while u r speaking serbia disturbs me alot may be that am ineed to practice every day when is your live streaming that I can do better? Hvala 🌹❤️
"Soccer" field? People who disagree with American exceptionalism, which is everyone outside the USA, would use a different word.
Zdravo, Dragana. what scares me is all those examples with new vocab😅 too difficult for me as a beginner 🫣Thank you for this colorful autumn video though 🍁🍂
@@Tata-io4ih You are right- in this video the vocabulary is mostly for intermediate level and above. Hope you can enjoy the vocab in some of our other beginner-friendly videos! And don’t get discouraged, learning Serbian is not easy, but it is very rewarding. One step at a time, you got this! 💪
Ja sanm satoo što sam srbinnn😊😊😊❤❤
Jako lepoo
thats so weird how some words are exactly the same in german too; waage = vaga, lack = lak lol
Yeah, because of our history (part of Serbia was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire), there are a lot of Germani loan words in Serbian.
wait so whats the word order of it? it seems to be changing
Good observation! The word order does change because short forms of the personal pronouns in dative can never be at the beginning of a sentence.
hi, my baba and djeda were serbian. baba used to call me stuff like Im not sure how to spell it in english so i will say it phonetically, she would call me micho (me-sho) and prasa (prah-zah) and also (walalo/valalo) do you know what any of those names mean? i assume they were pet names. baba and djeda died a long time ago sadly, and i have noone else to ask!
What is the difference between idem ka školi vs idem prema školi? When do you particularly use ka? And when do you particarly use prema?
