    Thanks for the video, got mine yesterday. It’s pretty good. A couple of observations . First is I don’t see the point in the button as you can set your lens FL and max aperture in camera. Second is that the subject detection focusing is a bit sketchy. I don’t have a lot of experience with this as I am also Fuji owner so I tend to shoot AF-S 99% of the time, so it may be a case of my having to practice with Zf to get used to it.

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee День тому

      Yes, you have to train yourself the manual focusing. It has to get in your muscle memory. And especially when you’re wide open, then the critical focus is a matter of tiny adjustments on the lens. The focal length is necessary for the ibis and the settings in the camera seem to not being used for the ibis. The max aperture is not transferred to the camera. You can set it with the dial manually to max f5.6, but it is not needed for anything in terms of how the pictures will come out. You only have the settings in the exif files. But I don’t keep track on these numbers. Too much micro managing. I like manual focussing also only on old lenses. With my AF lenses, I never even think about that at all. But it opens a world to a lot of interesting lenses and since it is not that easy, it means for me that I have worked and earned the final image. That’s at least my own motivation. But I can see that thisnis clearly not everybody’s thing. But try it a little. You will see, you will get better over time. 😁

      @@manugeee I am experienced with MF, no issues there…it’s the subject detection I am not used to. No matter how many people say automation is good it’s never quite as predictable as they claim, hence why I like MF…the control is all mine. And ibis is fine for me with this adapter, it’s always on whether I push the button or not. 😎

    they should make an adapter Z to Z so you can use nikon Z lenses without electronic contacts to work properly. I understand that would change the distance of the lenses from the sensor... I'm thinking to buy an Artralab for my Nikon ZF and for what I see I should by that lens for sony adapter and use the neewer adapter E to Z... am I thinking well?

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee 2 дні тому

      Yes, adapting on from one to the same works only with changing the flange distance. I only knowing from macro rings. In the Atralab case I have also ordered a 50mm lens for Sony E Mount, so that I can adapt it to Nikon and have MF confirm. But till my order I have not heard anything from them in terms of delivery.

    This and the Zenit are the only two cameras I bought for their native lenses 😂. The camera is indeed intuitive and later Contax SLRs (like 137md) used AAA batteries as well, which is convenient. But nothing beats like the Zeiss Planar lens it came with.

    Have you been able to set the aperture in the camera beyond f5.6? I've seen others mention that this is a limitation of this setup.

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee 7 днів тому

      That is actually a little bit a weird thing. First and quickly: The answer is no. I cant change the values with the TTArtisan Adapter above f5.6. But the questions go further for me: I have not really figured out, what the camera algorithms are doing, but they are behaving strange with the Neewer ETZ and the TTArtisan adapter. With the TTArtisan I can change values in camera up to f5.6. The value is decoupled from what is actually set on the lens and does not change anything noticeable on the exposure. When I start stopping down the lens, I see, that at f/11 to f/22 the exposure of the image gets darker and I have to adjust by exposure compensation. Below the value up to f8 I see no influence of the apperture to the chosen exposure of the image. With the Neewer adapter I have a similar behaviour. When I change the physical lens apperture to high numbers, the exposure gets darker and i have to compensate. Here I can also change the setting in the camera, but when the values of the camera get to f/11 and above, the exposure of the final image is too bright. The live view image is good, but then I make an image and the final file is overexposed. So it seems, that there is some non linear function working inside the camera and phyisical or digital large apperture numbers do negatively effect the exposure of the image. Therefore I have decided with both adapters, that I will not choose values above f/5.6 on the camera. Of course my exif data are then not correct, but to be honest: Since the values are not coupled, i am also to lazy to keep them both equal all the time. Especially, when i am shooting apperture series for my videos. Then I prefer to count the images to know the apperture vaules. ;-)

    Buddy! I don't know how you figured this would work but you are a goddamn genius or a madman savant. I use some pretty wacky old lenses (like a c mount 135mm f4.5 Soligar). Haha! Thanks man! 😊 I think, I read in some German photography forum, that someone saw, that somebody else had MF confirmation with an adapter and a non CPU lens. And the I tried to figure out which combination worked and which not. So far the neewer ETZ and the TTArtisan M-Z adapter do for certain. 😁 Actually this only one feature is why I got the ZF. And since I also can adapt my Sony Glas with my, so far the Nikon Z mounting the most versatile of all. But maybe not in the way, Nikon would like it. 😅

  • @vinyljunkie07

    Worth mentioning the ai has a long focus throw over the ai-s which as you noted is short. Also I must of had a poor ai example but the older non ai version I have had less purple fringing and chromatic aberration also wide open it was better in the centre imo but the corners were a lot worse.

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee 9 днів тому

      Thanks for the info. 😃 I am curious about the pre ai lenses, because I thought ai and AI-S are pretty equal, but as you say, it is very likely that some changes were made between generations. The question of having bad lenses of one type is also bothering me. Because i never know if my test lens is representative or at the edge of quality control from 40 years ago. 😅

    My goodness. If Nikon engineers see this, they will bang their heads on the desk. It's really strange that a heritage brand like Nikon is unable to power up their vintage glasses here...

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee 10 днів тому

      To nikon's credit, the old AF-D lenses with CPU work exactly the same way on the FTZ adapters. Only the AI-S lenses are unfortunately no longer supported. What I find very unfortunate is that there is no adapter that can drive the rod AF of the AF-D lenses. They can only be used manually.

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee 12 днів тому

      Are there Helios lenses with m Mount? I know them with M39 or M42 mount. Nevertheless, if you have any Leica M Mount lens, you can, of course, also put it directly on the TTArtisan adapter. As a matter of fact in the video on the table there is a TTArtisan 50mm f1.4 lens with Leica M Mount visible. I just finally didn’t put it on the lens because I found it to repetitive and it would not add to the video message any more. So in short. If you have any lens, that you can somehow put on a Leica M Mount, then it will work on the ZF camera as described.

      @@manugeee I just don't understand if the green squares work when the lens doesn't have electronic contacts? How do these squares work?

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee 12 днів тому

      The camera does the image processing. It finds subjects like persons and eyes and will also do a "sharpness" Check. Uscually it needs some informations from the lens to work. But this is done by the adapters and therefore the check up and focus confirmation works properly. Now the real lens is just needed to bring the light onto the sensor. It is decoupled from the electronics.

    Thank you Manu for this video. Very informative and I have subscribed to stay informed. Can I ask, is the Sony adapter (with the orange ring ) F mount to E mount? Also, this somehow works better than the FTZ adapter? I just bought a Nikon Fz camera and have several old Nikon Ais lenses to play with and the FTZII adapter. Thank you. Auf wiedersehen.

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee Місяць тому

      Thanks for the comment. My Nikon F to Sony E Adapter (I think it’s from K&C Concept) is a pure mechanical adapter and has no electronics inside. It basically just clutches G Mount Glas into E-Mount cameras/ or Emount Adapters. The Nikon FTZ adapter on the other hand is a mechanical connection and has electronic contacts. That means that AF-D ans AF-S Nikon Lenses can communicate with the camera. But the AF-D lenses need an external motor, so they cannot Autofocus with the FTZ adapters (I and II). But since they communicate, they also give the green MF confirmation box. Unfortunately with older AI-S lenses, without a CPU inside, They also cannot communicate through the FTZ adapters and sadly don’t give the green MF confirmation. I only found the newer adapter and lately the TTartisan Leica M to Nikon Z adapter, which provides MF configuration with non CPU lenses.

    Very intersting video, thank you! What are the pros for manual focusing on the neewer vs the megadap? Thanks

      Thanks! The main difference is, that the megadap does not provide manual focus confirmation with non cpu lenses.

    • @manugeee

      Not really. The adapter works as i expect it to. The only thing, I noticed, is that when I manually dial in large apertures into the camera, then the camera will overexpose. So I keep the settings in the top mini display of the camera below 5.6. Also the exposure, when the lens is set to large apertures above f11, the camera starts to underexpose 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop. But that not a real dealbreaker and I only notice it when marking aperture series for the videos.

    Can you get the green focus confirmation box to work using the same solution but with the Z6 Camera?

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee Місяць тому

      Some people said, that it also works with older Z Cameras. I only have the ZF, so I cannot for shure say anything about the others. Do have an Ftz adapter and an older CPU lens for testing? Because there with MF the confirmation also works, but only for CPU lenses. AI-S or older do not have the green box with Ftz adapters.

    This is SO interesting! I have one of these and just tested it similarly. This is on a A6300 (APS-C) Bokeh is creamy and not busy in pretty much any apperture. It's sharp all over (APS-C) from F/1.8 to F/11, and from F/2.0 to F/11 it's as sharp as my Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 (Sony).

      @manugeee Місяць тому

      Thanks. Glad you like it. I am actually on my way to the tenth’s episode of the 50 lens tests. :D With APS-C you cut out the filet parts of the lens. But also the higher resolution shows more weaknesses. The older lenses are really very good stopped down a little bit. The Zeiss 55 1.8 is also on my list and will come at some point in future. :D

    Wich lense is sharper al f1.4 the Nikon 50mm ai or the Canon fd 50mm? I bought the canon because from a recent test that I saw the Nikon seems not actually f1.4, in this test the nikon 50mm f1.4 ai was compared with the newer version nikon 50mm f1.4d, the older lens was darker (maybe f1.8 - 2 its real value) but it was sharper than the new d version. So it would be a very interesting test between Nikon and Canon

    • @manugeee
      @manugeee Місяць тому

      Hard to say at f1.4 both are pretty soft at f1.4. I would say the canon is a little sharper in direct comparison.

      With Nikon AI-S and older non CPU lenses sadly not. But if you take the AF-D or AF-s lenses with CPU, you can also use them for Manual focussing with AF confirmation.

      Ich habe mal noch eine ganz andere Frage an dich als ZF user - ich habe das problem, das mein augenautofocus mit dem 40mm f2 oder anderen Linsen nicht auf meine Augen scharfstellt, sondern an meinen Augenbrauen hängenbleibt . Das passiert mir sehr sehr oft. Ist dir die Problematik bekannt? Viele Grüße

    i got one of this lens to use with my Pentax LX body. By comparison with my Nikkor 50mm 1.4 ais and my Canon 50mm f1.2 fnd, i found this lens a dog. It really never gets sharp. I liked the colour rendition but the lack of resolution makes it unusable imho.

      @manugeee Місяць тому

      Hmm… maybe you had a bad copy? Once I had a EF canon 50mm 1.4 which was soft all the way. Even with manual focussing with a mirrorless camera there was no sharp spot. On the other hand the Nikkor is also really nice. The canon I don’t know (yet). 😈😈😈

      @@manugeee Thank you for your response. Really appreciate your work and videos. I ve been collecting film cameras and lens for +20years. This pentax SMC 50mm F1.4 M is the lowest resolution lens I ve came across. Even against my old nikkor rangefinder lens from the 50s...I don't really know what a bad copy means. There might be some variation across lens but it shouldn't justify something in particular. Interestingly, I love the colours, contrast and overall rendition of this lens. I also like the feeling and build quality. Even more interestingly, I find the performance in low light at F2 quite good but the the lens never really gets sharp. I just created a flickr account and upload three test rolls for you to see, in case it interests you. Just random photos to try the lens one more time.
