2018 Land Rover Discovery Owner's Review
Hi Leigh, I enjoy your work mate, I have nearly the same quiver, what type of surf watch & app do you use.
It's great to see the older guys still out there and making it happen. The part I have a hard time with is, here in SD CA (that includes Sano) it's soooooooooo crowded no matter what day of the week or time of day that it's basically just a shat show out there. Yeah about once a week I can get it at a decent crowd, and yep I still get A LOT of set waves even with 90 guys out no bs, I just have a hard time with a f--king circus beyond over crowded joke. How bout those Ebikes?! Sad the beyond over crowded thing changed surfing. Well gotta go I'm in line at Sano idling in my truck for another hour so I can park. Peace
What is the brand u use as the full traction pad ?
It is an Ocean and Earth Model "Down the Line" oceanandearth.com.au/collections/surfboard-tail-pads/Centre-Deck+Down-The-Line
What an absolute animal!!! Edit: when you said about windy days (which we get a lot of in the Uk) did you say the volcanic or helium is better? Also do you find a difference between the shape of a dominator and a revo/cymatic? I surf an ibolic revo so this is of interest to me
Hi Jay, the Volcanic handle bumps better than Helium. The Revo goes on rail a bit easier than the Cymatic but the Cymatic is easier to go vertical and more controllable. The Dominator feels like a more traditional board, not as lively as a Cymatic, but a more conservative board and good for beginner to advance where the Cymatic suits Intermediate to advance
What size is your FRK?
My FRK is 6'1" smooth on good step waves
Idiots.
Great review. Got the mid6 and great in all conditions. Have you tried the mashup, looking for fun groveler for every day beachies, intrigued by the cymatic as shape looks like it would be a fun board with better paddling but they promote as a high performance board but sounds like it goes well in average conditions to? Always fancied a dominator. Cheers
No I have not tried the Mashup. So many good boards so little time :)
How long of a board do you think you'll be riding when you're 80 years old ?
Thanks Barry, good question. I would hope a Mid between 7"6" to 8'. It all depends on the body slow down which I fight against every day doing yoga, light weights and balance work. I cannot imagine surfing not in my daily life, that is a very sad thought
@@leighwilson1524 It would be like going cold turkey off of something. If you know what I mean ?
I’m 43, got the dominator 2 @ 6.0 35lt. I feel I’ve done my best surfing in on it, especially on medium powered shoulder-y type waves. The board really lets you know when you’ve engaged rail. I definitely agree about the windy/junky days, I don’t go so well on it.
Thanks The Dominator is a legend
Nicccccceeee niccccccceeee yeeeaaahhh yeeeaaahhh!! Awesome awesome, yeeeaaahhh yeeeaaahhh sweeeeeeet!! ✌️😎✌️
Thanks for the high energy comment! It's still so much fun to surf even if it's harder to get those big waves now.
mate🤙🚀keep surfing!! im just 56..agree cymatic is a special board of all time.i didnt like the revo as well.too much grip with no glide..about to replace my old yellow 5'6 lft cymatic with a new volcanic.hope to find one has lft under and not i-bolic....
I agree the Cymatic is better than Revo. It is Ibolic under the Volcanic wrap but feels different than normal Ibolic Helium construction. You will not be dissappointed
Awesome video Leigh, still ripping! Can you mention your body weight and what volume you are riding in these boards? Cheers
Thanks Salt I am 71 kg or 156 pounds. All the board stats are at 00:28 seconds. I just love the stoke of surfing. I am going to be a cranky old man when I can't surf
Im a Firewire fan had many, whats ur thought s on the old Evo and Omni verse the Cymatic?
Thanks David. Sorry I have never ridden an Evo or Omni. The people who do love them.
So damn good. Thank you
Thanks monster. I am overwhelmed by the comments and views
Thanks for watching
Amazing stuff Leigh - inspirational mate! I'm a 63 year old Firewire fanboy with a hankering for a Cymatic ( not that I need any more boards! ) - thanks for posting - cheers!
What! we always "need" anther board😀
Super helpful review - can’t beat those insights after so many waves. I’ve done my best surfing (in my 50s) on the Cymatic - sold it as was getting a bit small for me but you’ve inspired me to get another slightly bigger one.
Thanks Andrew I went from a 5'7" to a 5'10" so easy to paddle. I weigh 71kg.
As a 67 year old still surfing short boards I really enjoyed this . The majority of board reviews are aimed at the young demographic and are a bit irrelevant. Well done Leigh !
Thanks Frank. Most people never thing that guys our age still want performane
@leighwilson1524 I'm off to Urban surf in Sydney this weekend which will be interesting as the last 67 year old who went there died of a medical episode. I'm struggling with knee problems at the moment with a probable knee replacement on the horizon which has really impacted on my pop up and overall surfing which is frustrating. But you have fired me up so keep the videos coming.
Great review. Inspirational to see you shredding!
Thanks Ben it's still so much fun to surf even if it's harder to get those big waves now.
Nice video! I'm 62 years old, and I really like Firewires too. I have several of them currently (Cymatic, Revo, Too Fish, TJ Pro, Sweet Potato 1 and 2 and others). ✌
The rush of a high on a good wave never changes. My plan ti go past 80 and think a Mal (Maybe)
Great surf story and information. Nice work Leigh
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you liked it.
Cheers for the interesting review, any reason for the black and red arrows on the base? Thanks
Hi Jonny, I find boards look boring. Arrows are just for laughs but I tell people that I am old and forgetful and cannot remember which way to point the board ;)
You need to try the new Revo Max Leigh
Thank for watching Russell I hope Firewire sees you comment and offers me one to try. You can always dream :)
Do you get bad rushes on your gut from your front pad? I just got a near new second hand slater flat earth what a great board that is.
I always use a wetsuit or rassie. The deck pads are alway consistent in their grip and there is no wax to melt in summer.
I haven't used wax for over ten years on my two McCoys.. (6'8" and 7'0") Hexatraction or Versatraction are great! (no wax mess..) I'm 76 and about to get back in the surf after cataract surgery on both eyes.. great and inspiring video, mate!👏😎👍
Fantastic video Leigh .. an educational and enjoyable story. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Anne for positive comment
Great review Leigh👍
Thank Drew for following my channel . I hope you get some good waves soon.
Great scenery well done
Nice work mate. High level of detail as always.
Thank you! Glenn
Hey Leigh, I understand you’ve upgraded your Discovery since, but I was just wondering if I could reach out to you a bit more of your ownership on your TD6. I’m picking one up in 2 weeks and super excited. If you’re available it would be good to be able to get ahold of you. Love the content mate, keep it up!
Hi Sean sorry I missed your post. Yes message me on Facebook . I am glad to help
Idiots!!!
Was that an reactor center fin with the mick fanning side fins
Sorry for the late reply I some how I did not pick up your comment. Yes it is a Reactor medium centre Fin with large Fannings. I now have a 5'10" Cymatic Volcanic and I use KS1, quad with a numbster small in the centre.
Ruber chest of the rip curl is the worse desging mistake I ever seen. It gets destroyed after 10 sessions
Thanks for sharing your experience. Many UA-cam channels say that D5 is unreliable car. I noticed that most of them are not the owners of D5. But you own D5. I hope I can own one someday.
Thanks for watching. My new one is even more reliable
You are a shredder at 66. Keep surfing 🤙🏾
Thanks mate. I am now almost 71 now and my current quiver is a Revo 5'10, FRK 6'1" and a Tolhurst HI MID 6 @ 7 foot. I still surf daily and my good days are still the same but with aging you just have less good days. I still froth like a grom
@@leighwilson1524 I will try to be like you and surf into my 70’s. Amazing 🤩
Wish you all the best with your new car. I gave up with my Disco 3y ago, same model as yours before. Had too many issues.
Sorry to hear about your Disco. I know I have been lucky. I would elsewhere if I had troubles but they are just so good to drive. Thanks for watch my vid
What issues were you having? Which model year and engine if you don't mind? Thank you.
Surprising, usually the Germans

Rip Curl suits develop pinholes way too fast, literally within a month or two and some right out of the factory. Problem is they try to tape the seams over the fuzzy liner, and the glue doesn't bond well, the liner is too fuzzy/thick. Xcel will last 2 seasons or more and only then slowly develop pinholes but it is not nearly as stretchy. If it fits you well, it is stretchy enough. The xcel is also pretty thick for a 4/3 because they use thick jersey liners. I have had 5/3s that didn't feel as thick so it fits a weird niche.
That’s great footage .. I am planning to be there in October , I know it is not tue best time but hope to find good waves as well , being perfect and shoulder level would be just fine
I hope you have a great time. Do the early surf at Riptides before the crowd and surf the uncrowded right hander off the resort later in the day
I recently had a very unpleasant episode with my Disco 5. The steering rack failed whilst cornering causing me to have an RTA. I claimed on my insurance for body and mechanical repair. 14 weeks in to repair and I am still awaiting return. Very long parts wait from LR (steering rack, suspension arms and subframe). Can anyone advise if I have a legitimate claim against LR as I have excess to pay on my insurance claim and the car is now devalued as it has been in an accident. I understand that this fault has been recognised with other LR models that have been recalled but not the Discovery 5.
Looking forward to next episode
Thanks Drew, It is great to have viewers from England🙃🙃

Thanks for you comment. The video is an itinerary ideas style, also showing where we stayed and what we did. My videos are done with no financial benefit and they are just a hobby. Thank you taking your time to watch them and sharing our experience.
Looks great. I’m going back to Tassie to see these places. Nice video Leigh
thanks, great review
Great video and scenery, thanks.
Thanks Peter, I really enjoyed Tasmania
Thank you Peter. I hope you got some ideas for a trip to Tassie
Have just come across your channel as I’m considering the Discovery. It’s such a great place for every day info rather than the standard car review vids. Hoping you’re still planning to provide updates ✌🏼
Thanks for your interest in my videos. I have just finished a road trip of Tasmania which I will be editing that trip soon. But my big news, hopefully my new Discovery will arrive in June and I will have lots of videos coming up about it. Now I have to start thinking about selling my current Discovery. :(
@@leighwilson1524why did you make the switch?
@@Spartansrule118 I normally change my car every 5 years. As the November-17 Build was the last build with the small 7inch info screen and no Apple Car Play and very few features, it annoyed me. One month later they put in a 10inch screen. Things I preferred in my old car was the cruise control, 5 seats and the Activity Key. .
In light of the evolution of surfing the much loved Boneyard at Minnamurra and Shallows at Shellharbour were two highly over rated breaks that we always checked out in the 70's. Nonetheless it's great to see footage of them. Brings back many memories of trips down the coast.
The Boneyard of Bombo you mean my friend or u could say Kiama downs. but its defo not in Minnamurra, i wouldn't call shallows n the yard over rated at all. best 2 right handed reef breaks down that way, guess u wernt from there my child ya? .
It's a shit wave. Fat and wide when bigger than four foot.
thank you for this really helpful video! :)
Great work Leigh
Leigh - which engine did you choose?
I have the V6. I love the car so much I ordered another one (this one will be 5 years old by then) with a straight six diesel. Mid next year I will be doing a review on that. This one will be on the market then.
@@leighwilson1524 I went with the v6 diesel from 2018 - I got a good deal on a one owner version. I bought mostly for the off road abilities in Colorado.
