Im non-Irish I don't can to judge . I think both, Mr. Michael Collins and Mr. De Valera were very controversial in their time...but both were good patriots in their own way. The countless nameless dead from the many uprisings and previous defeats are the true heroes. They made the greatest sacrifice a human being can give - their own lives. You have to give the Irish credit for that...they were very self-sacrificing.

The first leader we should have had and were deprived of his wonderful way of thinking. The civil war should never have happened and I put all the blame on Dev for leaving the Dail and making that terrible speech about Irish Blood. I have read a number of books on both Dev and Michael. And I feel that we have lost a wonderful leader and the country would have been a lot different than we have today. I feel Tim Pat book on him sums him up so well.

Don't forget the role of Buckley who informed the British that the column base was at Crossbarry none of Monaghan's mines went off as intended - it is likely he was a British plant - deserters were usually shot so it is a mystery how he became embedded in the column. The IRA column disbanded and there was much reduced activity in Cork for the last three months of the war of Independence when the action moved to Dublin which like 1916 was the most active area.

Unfortunate that the reason behind the British roundup is omitted - information from IRA traitor Buckley who was "captured" at Upton where though he held a commanding position did not fire a shot. Also the number of troops involved 120 had been exaggerated with Barry's claim of hundreds. No mention of Monaghan's (deserter) mine failing to explode as had all his previous mines. Was Monaghan finally shot having been given a last chance. The summation of Crossbarry is a debacle where the British nearly caught the column based on an informer and shot up the transport. The column disbanded and the Cork IRA had suffered significant casualties at Nadd, Rahinisky, Mourne Abbey and Clonmult due to being completely infiltrated by British intelligence . Remarkably the Aungier Street ambush (actually happened in Wexford Street) is reported the same day. It is substantially unknown. There were as many attacks in a mile of road from Rathmines to Dame street in Dublin than boasted about in Cork for the rest of the war of independence. Despite seven large barracks, three auxiliary companies and inability to barricade or mine paved streets, the Dublin Brigade managed some 40 attacks a month for the remainder of the war to the truce.
