Michael Collins was much more a true patriot then nationalist. Everything he did was founded on pragmatic reasons and realistic goals. Of course he had his ideals for an independent free state with strong social justice. He literarily sacrificed himself to reach these goals, but acted always in a responsible way. If he would have lived longer then the Free State would certainly have evolved into an republic and his pragmatic realism would have created trust towards the Northern counties. This could have given Ireland and its Northern counties a real chance to grow closer together over the years. De Valera and his radical idealists blew it all, with Civil War and a fundamental breach with the Northern counties as a result. De Valera was a God's gift to the extremist Protestants of the North while they all feared Micheal Collins power to compromise and showing a way towards a truly united Ireland for everybody, Protestants and Catholics alike.
Im non-Irish I don't can to judge . I think both, Mr. Michael Collins and Mr. De Valera were very controversial in their time...but both were good patriots in their own way. You have to give the Irish credit for that...they were very self-sacrificing.
