No budget 72 hours Outdoor Survival Kit (Small)
Переглядів 1,9 тис.9 років тому
Hi, everyone. I always think of a 72 hours Outdoor Survival Kit is my last ditch effort in a holistic approach to outdoor safety. Although there exists a good number of commercially available kits, I always want to have the best gears I can find(and known to be good) in my own kit. And that's the one of the main reasons I assemble this kit, a kit solely based on what I think is the best balance...

    @comisgear7546 Just wondering, instead of using Epoxy Resin, wonder if using something like nail polish would work too?

    To be honest I'm always a bit nervous using these things because of how fast they can snap shut, but better to be nervous and safe than careless and cut I guess

    I put on O-ring on the back pivot, so the tip hits the rubber not the brass. That's it.

      Not too much, the main change I've made over the years was to change from the large tin to a soft lightweight pencil case. It is much easier for pocket carry, and to keep all the contents inside the zipped case.

    I used a little Teflon tape or a little floss around the stop pin. Then once I have the stop correct. 0.1 to 0.2 mm , if that, will greatly improve the stop position. Then add a little super glue to harden and affix floss or Teflon tape to stop pin. Works like a dream.

    I have a Mini Peasant. It's a Roman Peasant knife made in New Zealand from a high-carbon Swedish tool steel called L7 that Svord uses with a proprietary tempering formula to create an outstanding blade at a crazy cheap price. Svord makes their money from selling lots of knives instead of selling fewer at a larger profit. I filed that point off the back of the handle. It's a great EDC and you can drop it and so what? It's tough and inexpensive and perfect for what it is, a great blade that holds an edge EXTREMELY well with the most simple handle design and being able to grab that tang as you reach into your pocket is something you get used to right away.

    Since the 91 and 93mm saws are the same what explains the considerable differences between them?

  • @zerofivetwelve
    @zerofivetwelve 2 роки тому

    Some models (like Compact) i would not recommend closing it by let the blade snap closed because the tolerance between the inner spine and the tip of the blade is too small. So by snapping it it would damage the tip.

    This has to be the best saw test out there, especially as I don't see anyone else compare the saw lengths for so many tools as you did, plus you showed the actual effective cutting length rather than the length of the tool including the tang. What you don't show - but you don't need to show as I have some for comparison - is the saw on the smaller SAKs, 91 and 93mm (they're the same), which I measured at 67mm. At this it is longer than any Leatherman saw you showed. I don't have many LM for comparison, just the Rebar and the saw on this is considerably thinner than on the SAKs. This leads me to the conclusion that the best outdoor tools where saw (as well as blade) are most important are Victorinox 111mm knives - I have the Soldier - and Vic 93mm knives like the Farmer, which has a thicker blade than on the 91mm plastic scaled models and a better reamer. But if push comes to shove I'd even take my 91mm Hiker over my Rebar anytime, the knife blades are the same but the Hiker saw is longer and thicker than on the Rebar. I guess the only Leatherman which may have a better saw could be the Supertool 300 but again it isn't going to be anything near as long as the 111mm Victorinox SAK saws. Finally, the Victorinox Mauser you show is a limited edition version of the old German Army knife. They are quite sought after, I've seen second hand ones advertised for around $150 USD.

    My problem is that I don’t have enough strength to do what you do around 3:04. if I try that the blade won’t move until I use more force and then it closes so fast that my finger slips down. Yet I had luck and it only slipped away on the non-sharp side but I want to change this.

    Just regret why UA-cam don’t recommended me this video before. By far this is the best and most impressive mod to a victorinox. Which kind of paint (solid color) would you recommend instead of the glowing epoxy?

    compliments! really interesting test! I personally have done many tests with the leatherman surge, wave and victorinox spirit, swisschamp saw. I must say that for the same length, the leatherman saws are always slightly faster. The curiosity is that the victorinox saws are slightly sharper, but a little slower.

    Try opening a hook on the Climber model. Yup, no nail notch and no good position to get under it because of the ring. The ring really complicates things. Having a nail notch on the hook is a MUST. I am thinking of putting there one myself with a Dremel. The only time I'm using the plastic toothpick is to get the hook out. There's also one trick to pull the scissors a bit first and then the hook. Much easier that way. Still... Not a good design.
