Really like that rear bumper! Nice simple design.
What’s the mileage on the beauty now?
Very cool…congrats!!! Yup a rear locker will make a 2wd Taco do some cool stuff. Re-gear it and it will crawl a lot easier over those obstacles.👍🏼
I appreciate your honesty about your truck. I have a 2001, and like you I love my truck and don’t want to get rid of it. I like the Falken Wild Peak tires and thanks to you I will buy some. Have fun!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the thoughts. They are amazing trucks and I don’t think you will disappointed in the falkens. I’m still running mine!
Great vid. Thanks for sharing.
Where did you get the molle panel for the interior roof?
I found a link on the Tacoma world forums. Maybe OGfab? I can’t really remember. He is one of very few that makes things for first gens.
AMAZING!
Thank you!
@@ozark_outdoor_family2783 you should post more I enjoyed watching !
You should clean your headlights! Walmart has a kit for like ten dollars and I used it on my 01 Tacoma and it went from not being able to see at night to lighting up everything. Don’t know why I didn’t do it earlier
That’s a good idea. I keep putting it off cuz I tell myself I’m going to get retrofits but never do. Too pricey. Thank you!
I have a 2003 Tacoma! I’m in SEMO area. Fixing to spend $$$ to fix mine up for over landing. My kids are out of the house now. Hope to take it thru Colorado in a few years.
Awesome! Best trucks on the planet! Be sure to share your build as you go! No one in our area has these trucks built out. We are unicorns out here.
We are doing the white rim very soon and advice or gear tips you have? Thanks for the videos.
Big Bend is our “home park” and we are out there at least twice a year if not more. Great video and it is definitely much more gnarly than the video conveys. I did it the opposite direction and climbing that obstacle was fun. When I did black gap it was wet because of recent rains.
So we are driving the White Rim soon with a capable 4x4 F150 and an off road/overland 10’ trailer. Since you have driven it do you think I’ll be able to make all the turns with the truck and small off-road trailer without having to do a 20 point turn?
I would expect you should be fine. There are one or two tight turns is the rubble type part of the track (can’t remember the name of the area) but most of it should be fine. I’m jealous! I want to go back so bad! Enjoy it!
Ballsy!!! Good Job 👍
Cool setup
Thank you!
Im in missouri and just got my first 2004 double cab tacoma!
That’s awesome! It’s great state to explore and to launch bigger trips from. Enjoy your truck! They are the best.
The first gen tacos and old ranger weren’t anything special but these little trucks will go anywhere and run forever. I put nearly 400k miles on my ranger before I wrecked it and my taco is just like yours and at about 285k so far!
They are awesome little trucks. We do a lot in them and love every second of it.
Stickers are ugly
They are looking rough aren’t they… time to go out and add some more!
Nice video need to make it to Moore Expo to look at some products and ideas for my 96 tacoma.
Did you make it out to the show? I was there both days! Enjoyed it quite a bit.
@@nathanknight7443 nope sadly I didn't, next year gonna have to take vacation. Only 100miles from SF so thought I could.
If you’re bouncing on the road, new shocks are in your near future!
How many miles?
We are at about 215k right now.
Great video! I know it's a old video now but let me back you up. I have a 1996 suburban c2500 with a G80 locker. The 42 gallon tank behind the axle with the factory locker and the 3/4 ton hight that's almost as high as the 4wd version is a beast! Snow and mud no problem with tire chains on highway tires. I Mainly do forgotten forest roads so the terrain is mainly flat with over growth. What really gets my goat is that how many people thing 4x4 is unstoppable in snow or ice... I carry chains regardless and have owned allot of 4wd drives. For me chains are a must. Great vid!!!!
Great video, thanks for sharing. I have an '04 Tacoma TRD PreRunner myself and have been on many off road adventures with it. You find out just how capable they really are. Eventually I wanted the ability to tackle tougher trails (Which is why I bought a 4Runner).
I like your truck I’m looking at one considering to by one
Looks great! I have a Yakima round bar roof rack too on my 2004 ExtraCab, and have been looking for a way to mount recovery boards. Did you make those mounts yourself or are they a certain brand? How did you attach the mount bolt to the superstrut conduit mount? Thanks!
In the process of obtaining parts to run a rack on my ext cab. Did you use the yakima stretch kit?
Sorry I missed this comment. I’m guessing you have it figured out by now. If not I have some photos on my instagram of how I made the mounts for the recovery boards on the bars. Super easy. instagram.com/ozark_outdoor_family?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
I didn’t use a stretch kit. Just lined the bars up with the holes in the traction boards. That measurement fit into the window of placenta Yakima recommends.
I've an '03 xtra cab trd off-road sr5 model in red also, 397,146 miles. Check your spindle arms that connect to the upper and lower control arms for stress cracks as I was just stranded in Colorado after the right side broke late one night returning to my camp. $5900 later after replacing both sides and cv axle, new hubs and other minor parts I'm good as new. Mechanic and metal specialists confirmed stress failure was the culprit in the break. I don't beat it up as some think but after this many miles metal fatigue is a problem. Never heard about the rear frame problems you referenced but I'd like to talk with you about it to have an idea what to look for. Thanks for the info and yes Tacos are well worth the money and time as mine is worth 12-15,000 even with the high mileage.
Yeah… google Toyota frame rust issue. It was so bad Toyota had to extend the warranties on them by 10 or so years. Thanks for the warnings, I’ll be sure to check that stuff out!
What type of heater do you run up there
We use the Kovea Cupid heater in the tent.
We added Helwig helper springs to our truck. It firmed up the suspension when towing our travel trailer. Cheap and easy alternative for payload related issues! If you go with air bags you might want to get the kit that has the compressor with it so you can air up whenever you want!
Thanks for the advice! We have a portable air compressor but would like one mounted under the hood one day.
I've taken my 2000 PreRunner over all kinds of crazy terrain. It's a workhorse of a truck. Great seeing others put these 2wd mountain goats to the test!
I have a 03 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner and that thing does fantastic in snow
Why are you in 4H? Its a 2wd road until it rains
I'm assuming this is a tongue-in-cheek comment. Steep and slow and 2 wheel rear drive isn't the wisest on loose surfaces where a 1 foot slip could end a family tree...
lets go! I just got a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x2 because a 4x4 in my area was a many month wait for a new truck and I wanted a new truck now, it was the right time in my life. I was worried at first and hesitant because I wasn't sure how much difference the 4x4 would make and if the 4x2 would fill my needs. After watching this video I feel much better about my purchase and feel that with the right mods and practice we can perform even better on this trail than you did here. This video was a great down to earth and honest experience which is exactly what I was looking for. Great job.
Glad you enjoyed the video and that it was an encouragement to you! Thank you for the kind words! Get out there and enjoy your truck!
Broo I love ur 1st gen!!! U should do more videos on it!!
Thank you! I have thought about it. Just not sure there is enough interest in first gens. I appreciate the suggestion! Thank you for watching!
Did you air down all 4 tires or just the rear?
I lowered all 4. Helps with the ride if nothing else.
Thanks for sharing your experience, looking to overland at Big Bend this year in my 2wd 2017 Tacoma!
I've always been a chevy guy and had to get rid of mu beautiful 89 k1500 I just got an 03 Toyota tacoma with the RR Diff lock and it's all new to me it's got 227K and some nice mods rock sliders and a sweet front bumper I just wanna know of these trucks really hold their value in reliability and this video made me more confident im still a little hesitant to take it out on a trail but I really wanna do it mostly to get muddy. Can these trucks have just as much fun as a 4x4
Thank you for watching! The rear locker makes these trucks very capable and in some situations better than a truck with 4x4 and no locker. I would encourage you to add a reliable winch and make sure you have a good tire for off road. I drove mine all over Arkansas through mud and river crossings etc. with no issues. Only weakness was a slick muddy hill. Winch would have helped me a ton! That’s why I added it. Thanks for watching!
Most excellent!! Looks pretty hairy. Did you experience any brake fade? We did pikes peak and they have a mandatory stop to check brake temps, non issues luckily. I’m a big chicken though!! Can’t wait for the next videos!!
Thanks for watching! No brake issues. We upgraded to a higher performance break pad and I kept the truck in 2nd or 1st most of the way down. Definitely a unique driving experience for us.
Very nice I have a 2 wheel drive 2020 Tacoma!
Momentum, used to hit 4wd trails in rear wheel drive cars years ago....
That’s true. As long as the suspension can handle the impact, or you don’t mind the carnage, momentum can get you to a lot of the places a 4wd can. And in a much funner fashion!
Is your truck lifted at all and what tires are you running? I have a stock '21 TRD OffRoad with full RCI skids/sliders and have run all of Old Ore Road with it on the factory Wrangler Adventures but am looking to upgrade to better tires for the next trip. How much clearance do you have underneath ?
This truck was stock with slightly larger falken wildpeaks. No real extra clearance beyond factory. The wildpeaks have really impressed me. Our goal was to go wider with our tires for traction not really go taller. Thanks for watching!
Even with the locker thats good driving
Thank you! And thanks for watching the video!
Need to work on improving the audio.
Great video! I actually got emotionally happy for you at the end having made it! What a great life experiences! Hifive
Did you guys swap out the truck for a 4WD? If so, how come?
We did. Had an opportunity to snag my dream truck so we went for it. We are constantly going to more rugged and remote places and doing it solo so we thought it best to get a 4wd version.
Make a walk around video of your truck !
Thank you for watching and commenting! I considered it. Thanks for the suggestion. I figured there are probably a ton more interesting rigs out there than ours. Maybe we will look into it. Thank you!
@@ozark_outdoor_family2783 there’s only a handful of first gen tacoma walk arounds on UA-cam ! Would love to see future modifications that you do and such ! Thanks for posting
So awesome to see you accomplished your goal, I just got my girl a 3rd gen 4Runner it’s RWD, soon we will be installing a rear locker, it’s amazing what they can do for not being 4WD
Thanks for watching and the kind words! I bet she will love that 4 runner with the locker. Makes it a very capable vehicle.
4WDTACO what locker were you guys thinking of adding? I have the same rig
@@bryanrocha7468 either ARB or a true trac diff lock, the lockers are like 2k installed and the the diff locker will run you about 1k installed, difference being the diff lock will activate anytime your wheels start feeling some spin, with e locker you can pretty much turn it on as you please
Thanks for getting back and the info, good luck on the built. Any plans on more content on the 4runner?
Nice install! Does it interfere with your storage drawers when they slide out due to the extra thickness?
Only a little. I have to lift up just a pinch as I pull it out. It’s slick enough that the drawer slides right over ones it’s on it.
Is your tacoma grey or red? ..I noticed in your other video the tacoma was grey...
We currently have one grey and one red one. Trying to sell our grey one.
Beautiful setting and great work on that trail
Thanks. '03s are the best year.
I own a 2003 toyota tacoma prerunner TRD off road with the rear lockers V6...I'm so proud of owning such an amazing machine
I have an 01. Same package and I love it.
Is your truck a prerunner worth the rear lockers?..or is 4x4?
That’s for watching! The grey truck in this video is the prerunner. Our red truck is the 4wd one. The rear locker was more than enough for the trail. In fact I barely used it.
Great outlook to have in a challenging and tough situation. We just recently had our RTT fall off our trailer while on a trip in Death Valley. We were lucky enough to have someone watch it fall and stop us just as we were a few hundred feet away. It was shocking and scary at the time but we were so lucky and fortunate to have help and like you said it makes for a great bonding and funny story.
Glad someone was behind you! That would have saved us ton of grief! Was there any damage to your tent? Ours has some scars from the fall.
