Why Does my Whisky Smell Like a Camp Fire? 🔥

Why Does my Whisky Smell Like a Camp Fire? 🔥
I almost always drink my whisky neat, but I must say that on a hot summer day I do enjoy a dram of The Classic Laddie on ice (just one giant ice cube). starting at 50% ABV it doesn’t get diluted too much by the giant ice cube.
Whiskies and spicy food do not go together IMHO. I have tried some Thai spicy food with Ardbeg and a few non-peated as well. I couldn't stand the burning sensation as soon as the whisky touched my tongue. Spicy food and red wine or beer are much better pairs.
A revelation ❤
That ice dropping in the glass gave me the boak!
I’m sure your salty nuts are delicious!! Great video mate, love a bit of dark chocolate with mine!
Thank you for the clip. This is great. I have tried to pair some whiskies with food (Thai food) but it was always turned to spicy side. So with food, I will stick with red wine hahaha. Now I know what to pair my whiskies with. Luckily, I have almost all of the bottles you used here. The difference is Glenmorangie. Mine is Quita Ruban. I think it should work as well. ^__^
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, the Quinta Ruban will be perfect. It's matured in a port cask so it will have similar sweet elements.
I’m a bourbon drinker and I’m dabbling in scotch. Definitely not a big fan of peat. Having said that, I’ve found several scotches I do enjoy: - Lagavulin Offerman rum cask - Ardbeg BizarreBQ - Ardbeg Heavy Vapours committee release - a Highland Park that I’ve forgotten - Balvenie 21 Not sure if this list makes me an object of derision because I don’t know enough about scotch.
Thanks for the comment. Ardbeg and Lagavulin are typically peated. What bourbon would you recommend?
Islay peated scotch all the way!
These aren’t enjoyable scotch whiskies to me as I have gone way past them on my scotch journey. These were never expressions I found complex. I don’t like the sweetness in Bourbon and I find scotch to be a far more sophisticated spirit. These are very much beginner scotch choices. Not much to them. There are so many that are better even for Bourbon drinkers.
Hi Christine, thanks for the comment. I'm really curious what un-peated Scotch you would recommend?
I like the Balvenie 17 doublewood but unfortunately was discontinued in 2021
Yes! Very sad indeed! If I manage to find another bottle I'll be making sure to savour it a little longer than the previous two.
Great episode! Are you also going to be doing one the other way around like 'My top bourbon picks for scotch drinker'? I started with scotch and now have 90% scotch at home. I have tried a few bottles of bourbon but not a whole lot of luck there except for 2 bottles, one is Russel's Reserve Single Barrel and the other is Wild Turkey Rare Breed. There are both cask strength. Though they smell totally different from scotch. /Saran (Thailand)
Thanks so much for the comment, I really appreciate it. I just don't have enough bourbon knowledge to do a video in reverse. Would love for a bourbon specialist to suggest their best bourbon for Scotch drinkers. 🥃
@@TheMeasureOfWhisky-zu1di In that case, we are on the same boat hahaha!
I'm old enough to remember Whisky being served in a wine glass in a lot of UK pubs in the 80's 😮 It's Glencairn and Copita (I'm also a pompous twat 😆) for me all the way. Those Norlan glasses remind me of the heatproof glass coffee cups you can get !! But as an ex-squaddie I have to say I have downed a pint of whisky as part of an initiation ceremony 😮
Nice to see that Rugby shirt.I'm a Welshman and ex soldier living in Germany and have run a Rugby Club here for many years.Rugby and Single Malts are my two biggest hobbies. So what's your story mate ? I see your an ex-pat as well.Do you work in the hospitality industry or jsthat a mega home bar you film in ? Cheers 🥃
Originally from Glasgow, moved to Calgary Alberta in 2016. I work as a realtor over here. Yeah that’s my basement bar 👌
The prices have gone up massively in the last couple of years no matter where you live.I live in Germany and we have a relatively low alcohol tax and buying drams is much cheaper than in the UK. The massive corporations behind so many distilleries these days know that the demand is going up and just turn the screw up on their prices ( ie Diagio) The secondary market is also pushing up prices when they see demand going up,just see what's going on with Springbank these days. I accept the reasons you have mentioned but Single Malt enthusiasts are being screwed for corporate gain at the moment !! 😡
Nothing like sitting out in good weather sharing a dram with friends. I'm a Welsh Ex-Pat living in Germany and get together regularly with a couple of British mates (Welsh and Scottish) to share our newest drams. I reckon a "Kilchoman Loch Gorm" or the "Meikle Tor Sherry one" would go down well in front of a campfire 🔥🥃
I recently hosted a tasting session for a group of newbies (friends of a friend) I used naturally presented whiskies with 46%. both peated and un-peated with different barrel maturations. The two clear favourites were Arran 10 and Kilchoman Sanaig.I was suprised that so many people really loved the Sanaig after the first taste !!
I'm right with you on the ice.Never ever... Ice it up if you want to but you will be missing so much aroma, flavour and mouth feel . Cheers !!
Hi mate Just discovered your channel.I've been drinking Single Malt now since the mid 80's so I've had a lot of chill filtered and non-chill filtered drams in my time.Over the last few years I have really gravitated to drinking more naturally presented whiskies.I do think there is a difference in quality and flavour. Nice to see a channel informing people about the world of Single Malt Whiskies.Keep up the good work,I'll be dropping in again definitely 👍
Thanks so much for the comment Anthony 🙏 Any recommendations for a hidden gem?
Hi Stuart, This is a great vdo that finally makes me understand the reasons and effects. I, too, cannot find the difference but always enjoy sipping whiskies of different types. However, like you, I prefer non-chill filtered just because I like nature. I also like cask-strength if I come across one. I may try this experiment tonight but will probably use a metal spoon left in the freezer for some time to make my dram cooler to see the cloud ^__^. Hopefully, the taste won't change much. Thanks so much for the knowledge!
Thanks so much for the comment. I'm also beginning to favour cask strength.
I lean heavily towards 46%+ABV and natural color as I have a deviated septum and sinus problems reducing my ability to discern taste and flavor. My palate meets all the help it can get.
Try Cask strength and if needed, a couple of drops of water. That should help the aromas of the whisky push through the high ethanol content.
It IS a preference thing, but I generally agree with you. Try putting some ice in a laphroaig 10 though, it's already watered down anyway, might as well give it a kick in a different direction, and it's quite a nice summer drink
I see where you are going with this particularly once you ruled out blends. However, perhaps a gentler approach would be to start with it neat and if dissatisfied modify your dram as need be. I can think of a few single malts that left me with no choice “B---more 12”. I’m enjoying your channel. Thanks
Thanks for the comment Jan, much appreciated. To be clear, I’m specifically referring to the effects that ice has on a single malt whisky. I always encourage adding some room temperature water in order to suite your palette. 🥃
If you're trying to have maximum whisky flavours, then neat or with some water is the way to go! Adding ice will numb the aromas. But then again, drink it however you want, you bought the whisky with your money.
Great video! Thanks!
Many thanks Erik 🙏🏼
Drink what you want to drink the way you want to drink it. Hush.
How would you drink it in 35 degree celcius weather? Even a chilled glass doesn't work, neither do whiskey stones in my experience.
Malts I drink with a little water, but for blends ice is fine. Compass Box Orchard House with a little ice is an excellent summer sipper.
The best whisk(e)y is the whisk(e)y you like, the way you like to drink it. Although I will say, if you're going to do ice, go the extra mile and use large form 2"x2" ice so that you have minimal dilution of your spirit and so that the ice doesn't impact the flavor of the whisk(e)y too badly. Freezer ice can give it some funky flavors in my experience.
If you've never tasted that whisky before, agree have it neat first to get the full flavour. If it's a whisky you are familiar with, then do as you like. It's your dram, you decide how you drink it
I like single malt neat, but I definitely am pouring Monkey Shoulder on a rock.
I was pleasantly surprised at Monkey Shoulder, really decent blended malt.
Putting ace into your whisky?
Yes, for sure.
In hot Summerdays i really like a Bourbon/VirginOak matured/finished Malt with Ginger Ale and a Splash of Lime juice with some Icerocks. Over the Year i've been gifted 1-2 Bottles of Scotch i dont like neat, so there is a Way for me to enjoy these Bottles. 😅 A Cocktail or Longdrink also gets better with higher Quality Ingredients. But of course i prefer a good Single Malt always neat or with some Drops of Water.😅
If you pay for it, drink it how you like it. Like I need some loser online telling me how to drink.
Drik it however you like it.
Drink it the way you like. I prefer neat, but will never tell people how to drink their drinks.
Yes absolutely! Especially on cask strength whisky 🥃
how about diluting with a teaspoon of water? Ralfy recommends it.
The cost is largely to do with the criminal amount of tax the crown and government put on whisky.
Yeah, alcohol tax in general is very high.
Spot on!
Thank you, there is so much to learn and understand. Our current favourites are Benromach 15 The Balvenie -double wood and Mac talla -mara What are your thoughts on Hart Brothers?
Thanks so much for the comment 🙏 Balvenie Double Wood has always been one of my favourite whiskies, if you get the chance, try the 14 year old Caribbean Cask it’s phenomenal. Also love Benromach. It’s slightly peated and acts as a great entry into peaty whisky. Try the vintage 2012/2013 of can find it 👌 I haven’t tried anything from Hart Brothers, although I believe they create fantastic blends. 😊
@@TheMeasureOfWhisky-zu1di Thank you for your reply, Carribean cask will be on the list. And the older Benromch if we can get it. So Hart Brothers do blends, thank you for that. I want something tasty and memorable for under 150 quid, something new.

thanks for your video! we know he drank Ferintosh and likely he drank Littlemill - Littlemill Distillery licensed 1773 located in Bowling, West Dunbartonshire. There were illegal small farm distilleries everywhere in his day and he would have had easy access of them in southwest Scotland. slàinte
Thank for the comment. Yeah I definitely agree with the illicit farm distilleries, undoubtedly plenty of them 🥃
Very interesting argument, very engaging.
Many thanks 🙏 appreciate the comment

Yes sir. That’s my basement bar 🥃
Is that your collection behind you!!!😂
Great video mate! I appreciate the tradition that Springbank and some others uphold for sure, but I would say for me personally the more important factor that I believe makes a greater impact to my whisky over floor malting is being non-chill-filtered and presented at a higher ABV. I'd say it would be hard to pick the difference between floor malting vs not floor malted in a blind tasting. Subscribed 🥃
100% Agree, you’d never be able to tell during a blind tasting. I also really appreciate the traditional methods, I truly hope they continue.
Me too! @@stuartbartwicki-calgaryrea6996
