The Receiver connects to your strobe or pack and the transmitter connects to your camera's hot shoe. They work with other PocketWizard triggers as long as the other triggers have channels 1 to 4. You don't need to buy a pair, one Transmitter and one Receiver as long as you have other PocketWizard triggers.
Manfrotto 229 (3039) vs 3047 3 Way Pan Tilt Head Review

This video will briefly review differences and similarities between two older professional Manfrotto three way heads. The 229, also known as 3039 is the more expensive of the two - and the 3047 is often found on older Manfrotto tripod legs. They can be found used and are inexpensive. Below is a link to show you how to re-lube the 3047 head. It's not hard and will bring an old head back to life....

I use climbing sling and a mayfer clamp (made by Matthews, Kupo, Manfrotto and others) to keep my pack off of the floor. It's one less thing to bump into. You can also use a J Hook with a mayfer clamp - I would show you that - but I don't own a J Hook. You can get the clamp/hook at Adorama, B&H or other photo stores (or Amazon). Bron made this strobe in the 90's and into 2000's. Bron makes Broncolor and this was probably aimed at the newer professional photographers. Broncolor strobes and packs are quite expensive - this was a way to get into the brand with out a large outlay. It is very well built - and easy to use. It's also heavy.

I think the 029 head would be a better comparison than the 229
Yes, I agree the 029 and 3047 are closer in specifications/design/used price. I didn't have one to compare. When I got my heads the price difference between the 3047 and 229 weren't that far off.
I have the 1500 sl. What's strange is the guy who sold this to me gave me all the cords plus the remote or whatever it is to slave to my olympus camera, but I don't need it. As soon as I turn my camera on and turn the powerlight on and snap a picture, the powerlight automatically fires. Can someone explain this to me?
I wonder if you Olympus has a built in flash and that is triggering the sync on the Photogenic
Cardellini Clamps use stainless steel baby pins. They are my go2 choice. Matthews variant clamp is definitely lesser quality using lesser quality materials than Cardellini clamps. I love Modern Studio stands though and interested in trying this.
Thanks for sharing your experience, I've heard good things about Cardellini! Modern has a 30% off sale now. It ends January 5
Steve, I’m going to be using 2 Speedotron 2401A packs. I have two 102 heads. I’m shooting wet plate collodion and wanting to flash each strobe head at 2400ws on its own pack. I know that syncing a wired remote push button is possible for 1 pack but can I tie both packs together by wiring each sync to 1 momentary push button? I want both packs to fire at the same time. I’m using an early 1900s studio camera and using the lens cap as the shutter. Thank you!
Have you considered an optical slave on the second pack? As long as the second pack can see the strobe flash it will fire indoors. If you are outdoors, then consider one of the higher end wein slaves. Otherwise, you could experiment with making the wiring to fire two packs. If you Speedotron packs take household plugs, those can be hard to find with two straight blades that are the same narrow width. This is a new Wein slave - you can find them online, say ebay for less. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/63339-REG/Wein_W930020_Ultra_Slave_Household_600.html
I have one of these and it’s great. I’m not sure how to meter for flash though
I think there are multiple opinions on this, but you may want to review some UA-cam videos to see the different approaches. I tend to put the meter close to the subject and pointed to the key light.
Lol are you reading my mind?! I was thinking about getting one of these or a Kenko! Everytime I'm thinking about a piece of gear or grip, you pop up! Great work!
Glad to help out. The old stuff still has life.
Thanks a bunch
Can I use both as a remote
I am not sure what you mean by remote. Are you referring to the Transmitter switch set to "Both"? Are you referring to using the triggers to remotely fire a camera vs strobe? If that is the case, then this link to the manual should help. There is a section for camera remote control. wp2.pocketwizard.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/424424Manual.pdf I would think you would connect the Receiver to the Camera and the ports on the Receiver are "Camera/Flash" and the second port is "Flash". I say this because the manual link above covers a PocketWizard Plus II Transceiver - which has the same ports as the Receiver "Camera/Flash" and the second port is "Flash".
Two cameras firing at the same time
@@firstklassflysports3732 I would review the link I sent you. I have not tried to fire a camera with a trigger, however, I think the manual will point you in the correct direction. I also believe the ports are the same (the 3.5mm jacks) on the PlusII (which is the manual linked) and the Receiver.
Hello Steve - I am watching this in 2024 - almost 2025 are you still available for questions? Thank you
Yes I am still posting and happy to help
thank you I will ask some questions soon I want to learn more about these I just never thought they could still be workable @@UsedProfessionalStrobes
Any of the packs/heads and triggers mentioned on this channel will work - provided they are in working order. The advantage is cost, the disadvantage is no automation. Of the ones that I have used, Profoto, Speedotron and Bowens are the most robust in that order. Bowens are probably the least expensive and easiest to find modifiers for. The Bowens S Mount is very popular now, so lots of modifiers offered new. Godox (and the many variations of Godox) strobes resurrected that mount.
@@UsedProfessionalStrobes What do you mean by automation - forgive my ignorance. I do want to look into this as I am a Profoto lights user and I do like this light a lot and I see that one of the photographers I follow on Patreon uses this light or this kind of light with his Westcott Zeppelin Modifier - So I am intrigued. It's possible he likes it as the light is on the outside of the unit and is lightweight. I have to ask him... Otherwise I will consider getting one of the FJ Westcott or Godox strobes and forget about this - however - there are positives to both.
This is a rather long reply - it's sets the context for why I use this old stuff, and there is no doubt the old gear has less features than FJ or Godox. With older packs, you have to set everything manually from the pack, there are also a lot of cords. With FJ Westcott or Godox, the transceiver (transmitter in hot shoe of your camera) will allow you to control the strobe functions without walking to a pack. You will also probably get high speed sync, portability with a battery and even something as basic as TTL. On the older profoto packs those aren't available. I view the convivence of setting functions from the transmitter and ttl as forms of automation - the flash does the work vs the photographer having to walk back and forth to a pack and make sense out of power setting adjustments. I guess the last point is you will get 1/10 stop control from the Godox/FJ new flash. On the older profoto packs it is 1/3 stop of control. I shoot for fun, it's a hobby, so I appreciate the cost savings of the older gear and I enjoy the build quality, especially on Profoto. I also don't have to speed through a photo shoot - so don't miss the automation. I tend to shoot in a studio, so don't miss a battery operated strobe. The Profoto gear I use is 20 years old, their 10 or 5 year old equipment will have more features/automation, but I am guessing it will be rather expensive used. Even with the older pack's simplicity and fewer features, these packs have a certain charm and reliability that modern ones might lack. Plus, there's something quite satisfying about manually setting everything and having that hands-on control. It can make the entire process feel more intentional and personal. I think if you shoot people, and/or with others on set, they will pick up on that as well.
I am looking to replace my Pocket Wizard and the household wire where do I find them?
If you get Yonguno triggers then - sold on Amazon. Be sure to get the one made for your camera. They are sold for Canon and Nikon. However, if you have a Fuji or Sony, then I have used the Canon version without issues. You will need a PC to Household plug to attach the trigger to the Speedotron pack. Search Amazon for “2 Pack 3.5mm 1/8" Male TS Mono Plug to 90 Degree Right Angle 3.5mm Male Mono Jack Audio Cable”

how do you take the plate off?
It slides off after you release a safety. The plate is indented or keyed so you can adjust the slide at set stops. The release is by the side of the plate

Thank you sooo much for taking the time to make the video series for Profoto Acute2 1200. You are correct - not much information online on how to use this unit. I am a newbie to this type of photography and took advice from a trusted photographer that the equipment is still great quality - even though it's rather old. He said that for my budget, I was better off with old Profoto vs buying new stuff that is low-end. The chart you covered in a different video is extremely helpful. I wouldn't have even known it existed without your video. I will update my comment after I have a chance to use it, now that I have a better understanding of how it works. Thanks again Steve!!!
I am glad you are giving it a try. If you have questions, just ask as you use the system. Good luck.

What’s the average recycle time of your 2400 pack at full power?
I think around 3 seconds at full power
Thank you so much for putting this information out here on the Dynalite power pack and head system. Just to let you know, though there are speed rings and quite a numerous amount of attachments you can get for these light heads. If you can find them, the speed rings are readily available. I have many of them myself From many different brands so the limitation of soft boxes is not a problem you can do strip lighting regular soft box big umbrellas, boxes, skies the limit. Use your creativity but these are awesome lighting systems. I’ve been using Dynalite systems for several decades myself since the early 90s. Thanks again for sharing this information for people to have out there.
Hi! Thanks for the video there is not much info on that tripod.... Do you know if there is a counterweight setting on the head? Thanks!
I think there might be one. I use very light weight cameras, but I put a sand bag on the head and I believe one of the knobs on the side acts as a counterbalance. It's probably crude compared to today's newer heads.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I have the compact 300 system that I just pulled out of storage from when these were brand new. Everything is straight forward, other than the tripod tilt unit on the band. It will not move. I can not find any info online. Is there a special way to adjust these? Seems it should be the typical way, however, neither light unit arm will budge. I would appreciate any suggestions 😊
I think what you are saying is that you can't adjust the tripod baby pin to tilt the flash up or down or swivel. Or do you mean the band can't be loosened? If the tripod baby receiver is stuck, then I would loosen it and work it back and forth. I have had some get stuck on Profoto heads. After working them back and forth I was able to get them unstuck - the good news is they stayed unstuck.
Correct, it will not tilt on the tripod (or off). I actually took it apart and even then neither will budge (I have two of these). Would you mind sharing how you adjusted the pin? I am trying to be very careful to not break anything.
Sure, I don't have my Compact 600 anymore, but let me see if I can get a video on the AcuteD4 head. That is where I noticed the issue on my end. I believe the way the baby receiver works the same on the D4 and Compact. As an alternative, I could do a Apple FaceTime to help trouble shoot. If you want to go that route, then I will post an email so we can exchange phone information outside of this comment section.
You can also tap the receiver with a hammer. I would place a piece of wood against the receiver (metal part) and not directly tap the hammer to the metal, but rather the wood. It is just a tap to break the bind. It's a fast motion with a little mass vs a slower motion you would be using if you tried to loosen it by hand.
Hi Steve, thanks so much for all your videos on the Profoto Acute2 pack and D4 heads as they have been instrumental in my decision to give one a try. I bought a Actute2 2400 generator with two D4 heads. I needed this set-up to run a true parabolic umbrella and didn't want the weight of a mono block on the focusing rod. I got the new pack and after the 4th flash it smoked. I opened the pack to see what smoked and discovered how rudimentary (in a good way) the electronics were in the pack. I found that one of the control board capacitors had let go as well as a couple diodes. Also, one of the flash caps let go so it was a decent triage of that unit. A few weeks later I reconfigured the flash capacitors to eliminate the one that blew and replaced the other cap and diodes. I'm happy to say those vintage packs are not only super great but easy to repair with the right ability (Danger: flash caps harness high voltage energy and can kill you). Fast forward to today (3 months later) and I own 4 packs , two that are as-is and two that I've repaired with very similar failure modes. I've acquired 6 Acute D4 heads and have repaired 3 of those. Tomorrow I have 2 Acute2R 1200 packs showing up that are parts only. I believe they will be same failure mode and I can easily repair them. Since you are into vintage strobe gear I thought you might like to hear how others are propagating the wonderful utility of older packs. Thanks for your videos because they did educate me and help me decide on this brand to move forward with. I have a boudoir photography studio and yesterdays shoot was almost all pack and head --- minus one set with a Godox AD600Pro. It's a new workflow but the old packs are just a pleasure to operate. Thanks again and keep'em coming.
That is impressive - and what a way to keep old gear going/contributing. I wish I had those skills. Thanks for sharing. Steve
Hey Steve! Perfect timing. I found a couple of these in my attic recently, which led me to your channel a couple weeks ago. Have you identified what the modeling lamp is yet? One of my heads is missing a lamp and I can't find a replacement. Also of note, I have a M1000 just as you, but the face of it doesn't have as many controls. There must have been different variations.
Yes I would imagine over time there were different configurations of the packs. Tomorrow I will take out one of the bulbs and see if there are any markings on the base of the bulb.
If you have a bulb in another head you can look as well. I suspect they twist out. If you remove it where gloves or don’t touch the bulb with bare skin. It will deposit oil and burn out the halogen bulb
I believe my bulb on a 2040 head (your head may be a different model) is this one. I was unable to get it out, it's stuck. It twists out. www.interlightus.com/products/dyna-lite-2040-modeling.html?cq_src=google_ads&cq_cmp=19545792179&cq_con=&cq_term=&cq_med=pla&cq_plac=&cq_net=x&cq_plt=gp&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwqf20BhBwEiwAt7dtdREbsaAlxZwrOvGo4ypQwDysjW4Wn0ycx2_cxucwe5mPm5V8NYE7NRoCC7IQAvD_BwE
You can identify bulbs once out by markings on the base and the way the base looks. Article such as this one will help. www.lightbulbs.com/halogen-bulb-and-base-types In my case it was a T4 and base of Bulb Base Type BA15D DOUBLE CONTACT BAYONET 15MM DIAMETER. You can get replacements from non photo stores.
Can I use this with regular dslr ?
Yes, the head will attach to those cameras. I put an arca clamp on the head and then use arca plates on my mirrorless or dslr cameras for easy on / off functions.
i was given two gm400's (not RX) and there is only one power cord and one sync cord. I have a nikon D750 and am wondering how to trigger these flashes. I also have a nikon 910 speedlight, so can i use that somehow to trigger the gm400s?
You can use the external flash. There is a built in infra red sensor on the bowens. On the back of the bowens, there should be a button called cell. You want to try diifferent settings until you find which setting on the cell button sees your external flash. Your external flash should allow you to fire a test shot - so to figure out the button you don't need to put the flash on the camera to do the test. If you want to have wireless, then I would use a YONGNUO RF-603II N3. I have made a video on syncs, including yonguno's. You will need a phono plug mono adapter cord. This is a title of such cord found on Amazon Fotoconic 10ft/3M 3.5mm to Male Flash PC Sync Cord Cable with 6.35mm to 3.5mm Jack Adapter for Studio Strobe Trigger Camera Lighting. The power cable is standard and easy to find. They are used for laptops - just look for one what will fit the shape of your strobe back.
@@UsedProfessionalStrobes thx for all that info. Will see how I go 👍
@@okidoke4822 let me know - you are very close.
@@UsedProfessionalStrobes can you explain the “beep” and “ready” buttons? I’m assuming the beep is just if you want to hear if the flash is cycled? I can’t seem to find a manual for it. I’ve noticed one of the lamps isn’t working also. What exactly do you use the lamps for? The bulbs are both good though.
Beep gives a sound when flash has been changed. There is a modeling light that many people don’t use. They get hot and burn out. The strobe is more important- it makes the flash.
Great video! Just picked up the 700 and 1500 and I am in love!! The warmness of the light as well as the uniqueness of the bulb makes these my favorite. Glad there is someone out there who also appreciates these machines!
I've got the 1200R version with PocketWizard built-in. These things are built like tanks but they are easy to balance on the stand because of how the clamp system works. But you'll want a stand with a 35mm diameter main riser. I like the Kupo "Kit Stand With Square Legs" for location use. The PocketWizard built into the "R"" versions is also compatible with the PW zone (ABCD) system. So it can, for example, designate a flash in zone "C" on channel 17. Any PW Plus-II, Plus-III, or Multimax is fully compatible. These can also be used in the wilderness by connecting to a 120v lithium battery pack. I use a Volta V-385, but I think those have been discontinued. It gives me hundreds of full-power, 1200 Ws flashes before needing to be recharged. Flash durations aren't gonna set the world on fire, but it's plenty good for all but the trendiest stop-action photography. I'm on the hunt for a good condition 600R version.
appreciate this video. i have 6 speedotron packs
The reason the bracket dial is recommended to be used last - besides it being the the most fine tuned - is that it will impact the flash color temp. It lowers the voltage of the capacitors in the pack and will make the light warmer - about 100 kelvin per stop of adjustment. It will also make your flash durations longer / slower. The dip switches reduce output by turning on or off certain capacitors - so voltage remains constant and light color temp and is not affected.
Thankyou for the expanded information. I think if at some point I update the video I will include your points here and in the other useful post you made.
A few other points to note. Flash duration on the Acute Alfa is pretty damn slow - so at full power your camera's flash sync of 1/200 may actually cutoff some of your flash output. If you are using this at full power 1200 or 2400WS version you might want to use a shutter speed of 1/60 or so if you are trying to maximize output. The Acute 2 series has faster flash durations and this is much less of an issue. Also to note is that the dial with the quarter stop adjustments is a voltage variator and the pack does not auto dump, so when turn that dial down you will need to use the test button to dump the power - otherwise you may do a test shot after turning it down and discover your exposure did not decrease at all, what's wrong? Lastly the voltage variator dial will slightly change your color temperature - the color temp will get warmer by about 100 kelvin which will not likely be that noticeable.
I agree duration is not great for freezing motion, I use these packs for still life and table top mostly, so not an issue. Thanks for providing additional information.
Gosssh i love this channel.
Used one for 28 years, very versatile. Be sure to use a safe sync when connecting to your camera to eliminate the possibility of voltage back feed which a fry camera electronics. 🙂 one head firing at 2400watt seconds makes an impressive POP!
It’s a very versatile power pack. I used one for 28 years, mostly for portraits
Can you bring this on carry on air flight ✈️?
There is no battery in this pack, no lithium. I am not sure what the rules are, but you can check for airline restrictions. It has large capacitors which I would guess wouldn't be an issue. You could also try to ask vendors or Profoto.
I just bought the SBH-320 for $10 on Amazon and I am impressed with the solid build quality and it pairs good with my Giotto's MT-8160 Carbon Fiber Tripod. I will be keeping an eye out for the larger SBH-550.
Slik makes some really good products that aren't all that well known in the US, at least in my opinion.
Extremely helpful! Many thanks for your time in putting this together.
Great Video! One other Lower Setting Option - 25 watt seconds if you split the 400 channel between two heads ( you can just dump the extra head )
The strobe cover is borosilicate glass. The tungsten plus flash is nice. Really bright and built well. ❤
Back in the late nineties, I joined a studio model photography group that used these Photogenic Powerlight PL750 and PL1500 flashes. I learned how to use them, including mounting the softboxes, positioning, metering and adjusting the flash power. I ended up buying 2 Photogenic Powerlight PL1875 Flashes a few months later with Photoflex Softboxes and Manfrotto 004 Stands. These are very robust flashes and I still use them til this day, even though I have Godox AD600 Flashes that you can adjust from the wireless transmitter. I have added Godox X1R Receivers to my Photogenic Flashes to trigger them wirelessly. Just checked their website and you can still order replacement flash tubes.
Yes, it is hard to believe how this older gear keeps up. Having said that, it is also nice that newer equipment has become more available.
Great video. I agree - robustness and ease of setup use trumps high tech features & poorer build quality every time.
Great video Steve thank you. If I have a really old Speedotron pack do I need a voltage regulator before plugging in a radio trigger directly to the sync connection.
I have had no issues with using these triggers on older Speedotron packs. So I don’t think it is an issue.
I used the PocketWizard 2 transceivers and plugged direct into the household outlet. I ordered the official Pocketwizard cable trigger to household plug@@UsedProfessionalStrobes
I got one of these for free. It's broken so I opened it. There is one electrolytic capacitor that has exploded and the flash tube is missing. What do you think, is there any idea to change the capacitor and try to find a tube somewhere? It's impossible to say if the capacitor is the only broken part.
I am not sure, I wonder if getting a used one wouldn't be less expensive than trying to source parts and get the repair. In the US, you can get one on eBay for under $150.
Hi! My TravelPackPlus just stopped working, no led, also the charger's led says nothing. Maybe you have some idea? Until last days it was working, I tried to turn on as usuall and no reaction at all.
@wszystkiezjaete - I wonder if the pack won't fire your strobe and you can't charge the pack if you need to replace the battery? I would charge it for part of a day - reconfirm it won't fire your strobe if you are still uncertain on the health of the battery.
Your channel is so helpful. Just bought 2 acute d4 heads for a total of $300. Now I'm looking at an acute 2400 pack. You are really saving my pockets. Thanks so much for what you are doing
@tommywoodard2163 - I am glad it is working out. The old stuff still works - just takes a little time to find and use.
Hello, thanks for the video! One question: which stand can I use as a stand for Cambo Redwing Compact Light Boom with 7kg (15 Lbs) Lead. I am not sure which product might be more compatible
I would use a Junior stand vs a regular light stand. These stands are meant to hold heaver loads than normal steel light stands. This is an example, but you can find them from Kupo, Matthews, Avenger, Provably Impact (B&H). Adorama, Sammy's, B&H and Film Tools are places to order on line. www.adorama.com/fplsrb12.html
Your energy is so infectious. I can't help but feel uplifted!
Does it have the ability to be a slave. I want to purchase for hair lights
Yes, I don't have the flash anymore, but in the video I state it does - the manual states that as well - look for photocell - www.manualslib.com/manual/2460542/Profoto-Compact-1200.html?page=11#manual
Please more content on these!
I can’t seem to find my Pulsar Trigger and need a replacement. Are PocketWizards my best option?
If you can find a used PocketWizard those are nice. I did a video on Pocketwizard and YONGNUO triggers here - ua-cam.com/video/PUyPrDP2OnM/v-deo.html However, I have also used and like YONGNUO Wireless Shutter Release & Flash Trigger RF-603II from Amazon. Get the "C" model for Canon, the "N" model if you camera is Nikon. I found the "C" version works on Fuji or Sony cameras. You will need a sync cable and for the YONGNUO the connections look like this 1/4" Phono Male to PC Male - www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/613662-REG/Impact_9031360_Sync_Cord_Male_Phono.html Good Luck!
