Protest the Hero - Fortress - Limb From Limb Cover (Bonus Tab!)
I think this one gets my vote for the hardest song from Fortress, and I was dumb enough to make it harder by turning the synth solos into guitar solos. On the first synth solo, I was able to keep pretty true to the original. I just had to simplify a little around the 32nd note tapping/pull-off/hammer-on frenzy. For the second solo, I had to take more liberties. Can't stay completely true to the original without a 34 fret guitar and dropping the end of it down an octave sounded stupid, so I opted to just make my own version of the ending trying to keep the feel of the original. If you want to replicate the tone, I just used my normal tone and put a pitch-shifter on it in Reaper with the dry tone mixed at 0db an Octave up and Octave down mixed down around -10db, and a couple couple cents up and down panned left and right. Kind of a cool but very lazy synth sound.
Anyway, here's some bonus tabs for those two solos if you want to give them a go:

I made a ton of little arrangement tweaks here and there to make the transitions less of a nightmare. Too many to talk about on this one but if you follow along with the tabs, I'm sure you'll figure out what I did.

Happy Halloween! The timing wasn't intentional, but this is the perfect song for this time of year. This song has 30 seconds of lead-in, and I figured nobody wanted to watch me sit there for that long with my thumb up my nose. So special thanks to Randall Aviks over at Black Raven Comics blackravencomics/ for putting together a spooky intro animation for me. The biggest challenge t...

I haven't done a song this hard in a minute. But I've got a couple of tips that might help others with this one. The opening riff is tough for picking and fretting, but try to fret with as flat of fingering as possible. That will definitely increase the odds of fretting the string you are trying to hit even if you fret extra strings you don't need in the process. For the part that starts around...

Woo! Finally finished Kezia. There's nothing crazy in this song, but for some reason learning it was a challenge. The opening few riffs are just super confusing, but once I had them down it wasn't too bad. Now that I'm done with Kezia, I'd like to formally apologize to Arif and Moe for any parts I may have (did) butcher. In my defense, it's hard to hear some parts on this album. Don't have too ...

I had a blast with this one. Might be my favorite song off Kezia to play. Got to dust office the ol' wah pedal for a solo! That thing hasn't seen the light of day in 20 years, so I was just happy that it still worked! This one can go in the "easy by PTH standards" pile. Probably the hardest part is getting your brain to accept the 15/16 transition from the opening. Even after playing it 100 tim...

I plan on finishing off Kezia since I've only got two songs left and they are both drop tuning. Let me know in the comments if you want me to finish off Fortress or Scurrilous next. Your single vote may decide lol. I only have 10 songs left, so my PTH cover journey is coming to an end unless they drop a new album soon (which the better do dammit!). This one definitely gets my vote for the harde...
Protest the Hero - Kezia - Nautical Instrumental Cover

Nautical isn't too difficult other than the opening bit being a heck of a picking workout. Didn't change too much on this one. Ended up moving some pinch harmonics because I couldn't find the note at the position in the books. The part at 0:26 to me sounds a bit different that what's in the book so I redid that part. But it's a slur of notes and hard to make out, so I could be wrong.

There's no crazy difficult parts on this one, but it changes gear so much it's easy to lose track of where you are. The hardest part is 2:18 just because it's so confusing. Fun fact on that part, Luke and Tim play that part with all down-strokes, which sounds super cool, but I can't do that without pain, so I didn't try lol. Made quite a few arrangement changes and I think there were a few wron...

So far, I'd have to vote this as the easiest (but still not easy) PTH song. The opening bit takes practice, but isn't as hard as it looks. Other than that this song is pretty smooth sailing. During that opening part I moved two tapped notes. I moved the highest tapped note on the G string to the B string. I'm not sure why that makes it easier, but just trust me on that one. On the second runs t...

Be warned, the last 2 minutes of vocal chorus for this song does not make for an exciting guitar cover. Just a solid two minutes of one riff. I tried to spice it up a bit by guitar-ifying the vocals so it sounds less boring, but it is still boring as hell to watch lol. The rest of the song is great though. Lots of Luke and Tim weaving in and out of lead parts. A riff making. On a lot of the arp...

This song was a special kind of frustrating. The arpeggio parts in this song are so insanely fast that I couldn't tell if I was hitting them or not while I was playing. The number of times I thought I got a good take, then went back and watched it an realized I botched one of them was absurd. So much time wasted playing out the song when I'd already messed up... But outside of those parts, this...

This song has some surprisingly hard parts in it, and it's not the parts you'd think. The fast parts are fairly easy. The slidy octave part towards the end is stupid hard and the sludgy part at 0:54 is mind melting. In the opening riff I move up the neck earlier than in the tabs. I think it makes for an easier pattern and is definitely better for hitting the last note of each run with the autho...

I made a ton of arrangement changes on this one. The first time I learned it I used the book method, so it's possible. But after revisiting the song this time I decided that the arrangement is mental. There's a ton of ways that you could end up playing all the double notes at the end of the song, but I think I found the method that requires the least amount of jumping around the neck, and is ea...

This song was definitely a challenge. Easily the hardest I've tackled from Kezia so far. But at least the hard bits are at the beginning, so that saved me some time. If you can make it past the first minute, it's all good from there. Probably had over a hundred takes of the first 30 seconds on my phone lol. You can make this song a lot more manageable if you just play the open E string and not ...
Protest the Hero - Fortress - Goddess Gagged Cover

Goddess Gagged is flashy but surprisingly not that difficult to play. By far the hardest part is at 1:35 where you have to bounce all over the place. But I got a couple of tips. 1. Your eyes need to stay one note ahead of where your are playing to land the jumps. Give that fret you're going to jump to a death stare before you even start moving your hand. 2. Use the very tip of your thumb as an ...

Did you arrange the synth solo yourself? That was incredible
Yeah, I transposed it to guitar, then tweaked what I ended up with to be playable at that speed. The tabs for those are in the video description if you are interested.
Great!
You crushed this one dude. Love the synth guitar solo's, 4:16 sounds perfect with those pinched harmonics, and your tapping has gotten just godlike, so clean and crisp. Might even like that solo more the original synth tone. Wretch coming up next?
Wretch should probably be out in a week or two. Then I'll just have 4 songs from Scurrilous left!
@@spiritcrusher5708 siiiick, look forward to em!
Holy crap! Great job!
120bpm 32th fml
For real lol. I played the solo section of the song on a loop for several hours a day before I even attempted the full song.
@@spiritcrusher5708 so you do really play this in one take and dont just play the video of an accurate performance and cut some audio parts together? man your musik will be awesome whatever you do. how fit are you in musik theory?
@@spiritcrusher5708 funny thing is after listening to every cover of yours at least once (and this one srsly at least 7 times now, I can assure you yt doesnt count that) Im kind of interested in your life story as much as i am in tim's and lukes. I kind of consider you as a celebrity haha. this is weird man. youll receive the weirdest comment after completing this jouney since I cant pm you
Oh, no. I absolutely make a franken-song out of my recordings. I just make sure I get a take where my fingers are in the right spot for every note so people can learn from them properly. It would probably take an extra month on each song and that would suck the fun out of it for me. That and trying to hit all the right pinch harmonics would probably make me rip my hair out. Missing a pinch harmonic at the end of one of the longer songs would probably make me chuck my guitar through a window lol.
@@spiritcrusher5708 thank god you're human. Much appreciated
man that was so tightly played. the beginning sounds tighter than the album. I cant wait for your own stuff after you are done with pth. on the other hand I kinda hope the new album drops before that and I can learn some new songs by watching your videos
I wish I could play as clean as those guys. My hands still don't always agree on what speed they wanna go so I end up with lots of clicky/twangy sounding notes.
this is sick af 🤩
at last
the amount of Protest songs you cover is nuts. I feel like ive been struggling with all these riffs for over a decade
This is my 3rd time learning Fortress, so I'm pretty comfortable with these song already. But just follow the time tested method of 1) using a metronome 2) don't bump up the BPM unless you are nailing every note every time at the current speed. I'm considering doing a video on how to set a click track to any track with Reaper when I'm done with this. Also, record yourself playing. I can't even explain the gains I've made doing these videos and watching myself ham-fist hard sections.
@@spiritcrusher5708 great tips dude, thanks, keep shredding
Can't stress adding a click track enough. If you want to try to figure it out on your own. Here's a quick guide for the easy method. 1. Export MIDI from GP tabs. 2. Drag them into Reaper (or DAW of choice). It will automatically build the time signature markers and you'll have a click track. 3. Line up the song with the click track and you're all set. I then like to set up regions around each song part for making things easy to find. Now you can easily loop any part, slow it down, pan to get just Luke or Tim, do whatever. This was the single most important thing to improving my playing when I started doing these videos. There's some catches and things that can go wrong with the import that have to be fixed. I recommend Scurrilous or later albums to do this easy. They all seem to have been recorded to a click. Some of Fortress was but not all of it.
So I’ve learned bloodmeat, sequoia throne, c’est la vie, and I really want to challenge myself with one of their songs what song do you recommend to learn that will challenge me
Those songs will give you a good foundation for any of them. If you want to take a step up from those, anything from Pacific Myth. Cold Water is probably one of the most demanding tapping sections they have. Caravan is a workout too. If you want to rip out hair, go for Volition. Drumhead Trial, Yellow Teeth and Without Prejudice are ridiculous and will definitely give you a level-up.
@@spiritcrusher5708 I started working on cold water and the tab arrangement is really odd for the tapping part, I am gonna most likely just re arrange the different notes to make it a tad easier. Thank you!
Yeah, don't know what happened in the books on that one but the tapping part isn't playable imo the way they have it. Just took some minor tweaks to get it to work.
yo droning on the A string for the intro riff makes so much sense, good stuff here
One taking all these songs... man, i can't even one take most individual sections😂. This is my training arc so i can go back to avenged sevenfold and finally defeat the harder solos.
They're only one-takes if you ignore the hundred or more takes I screwed up before I got there lol
What is the brand of guitar you are using?
In all my recent videos I've been using my Yamaha RGX guitars that were made in the late 80s to early 90s.
funny, i thought well if he can play all these songs with his pinky fixed to the body I dont need to learn playing with the fist. but you can do just both.
Ha, it's tough to not anchor when that's how you start of learning, but around 180-190 BPM, my picking goes to crap unless I pull my fingers in. So a few of the songs have forced me to learn the "proper" method.
that was impressive
I would've never gotten into this band if it weren't for your videos! Made respect for your skills and their amazing compositions.
That's wild. With my view counts I wouldn't have guessed anybody other than hardcore PTH fan/guitar nerds were stumbling across my channel. But it's cool the algorithm helped someone new find PTH.
looks fun to play. spoils sounds awesome as well

So clean
looking forward to the rest of these covers, but once you finish all the albums how do you feel about covering songs from Nocturne by The Human Abstract?
Please do this
I've never been able to get into them, but it might be fun to do a song by them. Is there a particular one you'd want to see? I can't imagine I'd end up doing a whole album. Honestly I'm kind of itching to do originals, so that might be the direction my channel takes after my PTH stuff.
@@spiritcrusher5708 would love to hear originals! From that THA album, in no particular order, Mea Culpa Vela Together We Await The Storm Crossing The Rubicon All are pretty popular covers on YT but the whole album has some amazing guitar parts. Thought I’d recommend because that album was around the same time as Kezia and the technical riffs are on par with PTH-although a little more classical inspired

I use a pretty basic 5150 patch on my Axe-FX.
You rip!
so maybe this is the song i should start with after 12y hiatus of guitar playing. still impressive and clean
so fucking sick. wanted to cover this song since 2009
huh where you got a instrumental version of kezia?
Doesn't exist unfortunately. I use programmed drums and bass and record everything else.
@@spiritcrusher5708 is there a possiblity i could buy these done tracks? like the album recorded from you in wavefiles for 10bucks or so? what guitarsound do you use?
Definitely don't want to be selling copyrighted material that isn't mine lol. There's plenty of ways to rip mp3s from youtube though.

ahhh finally found the perfect youtube channel. got my sub dude! appreciate the tabs as well. very clean! my lastes pth cover was from 13 years ago tounge splitter (one of the easiest songs i guess). Just startet playing again and learning fireside. cant wait for a new album srsly. how old are you man?
Tongue-splitter is far from the easiest song. I'm in the downhill side of my 40s lol.
@@spiritcrusher5708 yes just saw the sex tapes video, so maybe ill start over with that song. god thing i love EVERY single pth song. did you play all you life?
this is the only PTH song that I can play ~95% perfect but I can't wrap my head around that part just before the 4 second mark that's playing the G and D strings like G 10 10\9 9/10 10\9 D 12 11 12 any tips to get faster at that?
You''ll probably notice that I moved it up a string (to G and B) to avoid having to make a huge jump. After the previous part, your fingers will already be where they need to be for the way I did it. Also, rather than sliding down to the last note, I play it on the lower string with my pinky. And you can honestly get away with doing a hammer-on for the last note. Cause yeah, I'm with you on this. That series of slides make me feel like I'm just flailing everywhere. So for me, it was: B 6 6\5 5/6 6 G 7 6 7 9 And make sure you hit all the B string notes with down strokes and up strokes on the G string One last tip, as I was learning it, I actually picked all the notes. It helped a lot burning the rhythm into my head cause the picking pattern is confusing and off beat.
@@spiritcrusher5708 thanks for the feedback! as you said in the description this is a beginner friendly PTH song and the only one I've grasped at full speed. always appreciate your commentary on nailing these songs down keep up the good work
SUPER GOOD I WILL LEARN FROM THIS
Good to hear! Hope you have a good time learning it. It's a fun song.
hell yes i love this song. your covers are sick. especially enjoy your commentary in the description on the learning process :3
Flawless as always man
always great work on your PTH covers mate!
"The slidy octave part towards the end is stupid hard," If that ain't the damn truth, I remember when I was learning the album that part really threw me for a loop. Great cover and great job
It's extra rude because when you're learning the song, you think "oh, a nice easy power chord part". Then you try to play it up to speed and immediately think "what the hell is going on!?"
