I remember learning on that board! Thanks for posting!
Sure thing. I see you have many videos with Hobies, Kiteboards, etc. All looks like fun. I've only been windsurfing seriously for several years now... got started late. My son was recently on the offshore sail team at Navy and it inspired me to get back out on the water. I haven't looked back. All I have though are the old longboards. My smallest boards are a Malibu and a Bic Rock-n-Roll. Longboards are perfect for my area... the NC Inner Banks. I can't believe it but I NEVER, ever see anyone windsurfing or kiting at all on the Pamlico. The sport literally died out before I could get started. I like classic raceboards because they are so dependable in all the varying winds conditions we see on the Pamlico. I see hobie , dinghy and kite videos on your channel...Looks like fun. Do you still windsurf or just kiting ?
@@wlyounce375 yeah its the lulls that get you on the kites. I haven't windsurfed in years, so just kites now. Have considered getting into the wing foiling stuff for the lull-proofing they offer, and lower speeds to race. Kite racing at 30 is a lot of stress compared to only going 20. Not my thing anymore. Loved windsurfing but it was a lot more gear, and usually more violent in the crashes.
Oho 😲 Dar kaip šilta pas jus. Lietuvoj jau net ir dieną vos tik +3 laipsniai Celsijaus.
Indeed, yes. Our water temp is just starting to cool. This day it was 18 degrees Celsius. I will typically switch to my 5-4-3 wetsuit when it finally drops below 15, but I let the air temp govern as well. It has been unseasonably warm this month.
Geros sąlygos buriuoti, kai ilgai trunka šiltas klimatas. Šiaurės Europoje prie Baltijos jūros jau šaltas klimatas. Dabar tik gegužės mėnesį galėsime vėl leisti burlentes į vandenį. Dar labai ilgai laukti.
Sveikas. Matau dar šilta Šiaurės Karolinoje. Lietuvoje dienomis vos sušyla iki +10C° ,o naktimis -2C°. Žiūriu visada darai priešvėjinį posūkį. Man labiau patinka pavėjinis posūkis.
Wow, that’s cold ! and, yes, I find upwind easier than the jibe.
The last time I sailed was on September 28. But it's interesting to learn jibe too.
@@remigijusjozenas398yeah, my Jibes definitely need some work. Planing jibes on longboards are not my friend…. yet….. but persistency will pay off one day I’m sure!

Esu plaukęs su tokia lenta. Greitai lekia.
It's such a great board. Great geometry, very efficient.
It is a fantastic board. I have one and love it. Does your mast track working well?
Yes, the track works. But my skills of adjusting on-the-fly leave much to be desired 😂
A Formula racing board with a 70 cm fin points upwind exactly the same angle as a Mistral, but twice as fast.
A Tesla Model S Plaid will also do 0 - 60 in under 2 seconds but it's still nothing like a Porsche or Lambo...
Head downwind and get in those footstraps my guy!
Love my IMCO and have recently aquired a Equipe whiuch has re-kindled my love of windsurfing.
@lurch1e That’s awesome. How long ago did you start windsurfing? These old raceboards have aged very well / they fill a glaring need that is missing in the sport today.
@@wlyounce375 I've been windsurfing for 40 years. I went out yesterday on my Equipe, they are great go anywhere boards. Last week I hit 27.2 knots with a 6.5M! I will have to remember to take out my camer next time...
@@lurch1e absolutely love this. What this world needs is more old Raceboards. LTs are nice but Mistral needs to bring back the EQUIPE !!
Great to see an old board still being used. I have a Mistral Flow from the 90s still in great condition On the second hand market they are virtually worthless Much better to use them. I always prefer wave sails too They are durable in case you get thrown into the sail or end up on rocks.
How long have you been windsurfing? I don't think I'll ever be able to ride a board that small...no time soon, anyway. They look like fun, though. Is your Flow the blue model ?
Wow! Looks like a wild squall coming through there!
Indeed, I suppose it was. That system produced a couple of minor storms with lots of wind sandwiched in between. This band came through as somewhat of a surprise. I saw it coming, but wasn't ready for it !
Love it thank you for posting this video I'm thinking about buying one I just found one used in Nashville tennessee.
This video might give you better perspective (minus the catapult at the end) It is a great board: ua-cam.com/video/hs4kbhMfIoM/v-deo.html
Love it thank you for posting this video I'm thinking about buying one I just found one used in Nashville tennessee.
It's a great board. Very versatile with a wide range. Good thing about longboards is they'll always get you home when the wind drops. This board handles chop well in higher wind too ! I just had it out in 20 mph with big rolling chop. It's a very capable board... I guess that's why they used it as an Olympic board for so many years (ua-cam.com/video/hs4kbhMfIoM/v-deo.htmlsi=k6dxs3ZleZ2fxSct&t=458)
@RealEstatePhotographerPro Did you buy the board? There is another one for sale now in Stella, NC...I just saw it this morning and thought of you.
I have been sailing a Fanatic Viper 80 since 2008, but recently found an early 1990's version of this. Goes super fast in light winds, but is so much harder to tack and jibe. It's more an exercise in patience than an active move.
Indeed. All of the Mistral Comp's are classic longboards, so tacks and jibes are definitely an exercise in footwork & patience. I also definitely needed more downhaul on this sail / I don't use it much... I don't have an adjustable boom for my large sails (the boom is set for my 10.5 meter / NOT this sail at 9.5 meters) so I have to improvise the gear a bit just to get it on the water... More downhaul would have likely allowed the sail to properly flip in low wind....and my technique needs more work, of course. Tacks are so much easier than jibes when gear is wonky regardless.
the graphics definitely look 1988-89. They got more colorful in 1990.
Hi. Is this board suitable for a beginner?
Yes. It’s just about the best classic longboard for a beginner, due to its width of 70 cm. Modern boards will be easier but the Mistral Comp. can move in very light wind while others would just slog. I learned on this board and it’s still fun when the wind picks up. Make sure you get the centerboard with it… Will make learning much easier.
The people who gave it to me used it for beginners
@@pierreallard8797 Don't be afraid to load it up in higher wind. I spent many hours learning on this board and it is very stable for a longboard. It does surprisingly well in chop, you just have to make sure you get the nose up and utilize the width of the board in the mid section.... the soft rails will help you crest waves. I have many boards now that are "better" in high wind but I keep coming back to the Comp from time to time... it never disappoints. It's like the Grandmother of Longboards !
Good morning. I picked up the same board this winter. I see you sailing and she looks great. Hello from Belgium
@pierreallard8797 Awesome ! I have the larger “low-wind” daggerboard for use in the Competition. It’s the old dagger that also works with the Mistral Superlight. I find it essential for beating upwind. All of these classic Mistral boards are amazing rides.
What's your weight Amigo? Me about 95. Just bought an Equipe and will sail it this weekend @** Cheers mate
@user-wt5vb6lz1p I’m about 205 lbs so very close to your weight. Is your Equipe the original 210 liter version or the newer 235 liter Equipe 1.5 ? Regardless, both are awesome boards. Enjoy !
Great angle!!
Bin auf dem Board Regatten gefahren war ne cool Zeit, danach dann Formular und jetzt bin ich kiter😂 windsurfen nur noch ab 40 Knoten und dann kleines Slalom Material😅
It cuts so well through water. Looks like more fun than skimming right above it, as I do with my freerace boards (wouldn’t like to do this on a water state like yours…). However, why aren’t you using your harness properly? Most of the time you’re sailing without or without any tension on the harness line. Looks like incredibly tiring for the arms!
It's the distortion on the GoPro lensing. When I'm hooked in, the harness is tight.... believe me ! Although, I do tend to surf out of the harness alot especially when going downwind, just because I'm still a fair newbie and it helps with my balance. (Also, I've realized sailing over the past year that there is alot of centerboard foiling going on in this video...I should have retracted it on most of these runs, would have reduced drag...but I was going upwind most of the day and at the time, thought I needed it) Thanks for tuning in !
I see you're fast, but you could get into your trapeze and foot straps sooner🤙🏽🤙🏽 I have the same board and it can get much faster in light wind 🤙🏽😍
Thanks and I agree...but felt very overpowered all day. I know what I need to do, but haven't gotten a comfort level with the straps yet, especially in chop.
@@wlyounce375I live at a wave spot and yes the first time when the board start to fly is a bit scary 😂😵💫 I hope we can get more content wirh this board! I like it 😁🤙🏽
@@OdinHoeppner @skipper_chris Check out Gooner Longboards @GoonerLongboards ... He has the very similar Equipe XR (Equipe 1.5) with some great video.
Good stuff! Looks like some great sailing conditions, very jealous your water is warm enough to do this! I remember some very similar early days on my Mistral One Design. It is a huge leap of faith to jump into the harness and footstraps , but you can start by running with the mast track further back and daggerboard fully retracted. I can see the daggerboard pulling you up on the windward side when you get moving quick, that feeling can make going fast feel very unstable (and eventually roll the whole board up if you go too fast!) I did get my first foostrap days on a wider board, an old F2 Phoenix (was getting tired of the Mistral's tiny tail at the time). But after getting the initial feel of blasting, getting on the Mistral again was amazing and way more manageable in chop than a wider board. Just keep sailing and keep having fun and it will feel better and better every day on the water! 😁
@@skipper_chrisThanks, Chris !
how come water is SO flat ?? (no youtube issue with using that music track ??)
North Carolina Inland waters…we have lots of marsh which cuts down on wave action. And, yes, UA-cam allows use of many music tracks, as long as you credit the musician in your post, and your account is free-viewing.
@@wlyounce375 yes, I have been to Cape Hatteras once and it was AMAZING and THANKS for info regarding the music !!!
Nice USNA hat! My mid graduated this year. I have many of the same boards… equipe, comp, Malibu, Superlight, etc. so much fun.
Very cool. Yes, mine just commissioned this year as well. You have a superb collection. How long have you been sailing? I’m still new, only about 3 years now. Absolutely love the old longboards. Go NAVY !
About the same. 5 years or so. Just having fun! Lakes about to freeze in Colorado so season is almost over.
@@bikeroadrider Wow ! I wish I could windsurf (or even snowski) in Colorado. It's a beautiful place but too expensive for me to travel. I have been through one time in my life, I toured the Air Force Academy. Colorado is a beautiful state. You are blessed. One thing we have going for us in North Carolina is our rivers never freeze. It gets cold, but usually only for about a month out of the year. Then, it's back to wetsuit windsurfing.... and the summers are amazing.
that board is longer than my house
Indeed, she is a battleship
The Cure. Bic Bamba. Perfect day!
Looks like a fantastic day! How do you find the IMCO compares to your Equipe 2 XR and are there particular condirtions when you'd switch from one to the other? If you could only own one, which would it be?
So honestly, if you had asked me this a year ago, I'd say I would always pick the Equipe 2 XR, but I have noticed over the past several months that on good wind days, the IMCO has an easier feel to it. It almost feels more natural on the water. This may be due to my improved technique over the past 12 months but I doubt that's the case...I don't know. What I can say is it was definitely built for racing and its lower volume makes the IMCO more user-friendly in higher wind and chop, a more agile board. My Equipe 2 gets a little squirrely above 18 knots so I find myself going for the smaller IMCO, or even my old Malibu given those conditions. That said, I consider the Equipe 2 to be an absolute necessity in light-wind conditions where I frequently sail. We don't get the high winds on the Inner Banks like those typically witnessed at OBX. The Equipe 2 gets me on the water many days when no other board can, simply due to its added volume / geometry / ease of sail on flat water. It's also easier to rig with much larger sails. I have a 10.5 and I know a few folks in the Netherlands who use 12 m sails with the Equipe 2 and it handles well. It's not as much fun powered-up as the IMCO, but it proves to be a more practical board to own with a very wide wind range. Winds rarely pick up beyond 10 knots consistently where I live and because of that, 75 % of the time, the Equipe 2 XR will always be my Go-To. Check out this absolute legend, Frank Wuis @windsurfingterschellingfra1312, sailing the Equipe II, 12.0 m2, in low-wind: ua-cam.com/video/A3w-gOrbVtE/v-deo.html Also, give a nod to Ronald Huve, who does it right with music ! @ronaldhuve6501 ua-cam.com/video/2s_7cR9i4g0/v-deo.html
@@wlyounce375 thank you so much for your thoughts, no wrong choices but as you say more about fine tuning for your prevailing conditions. I actually have a mid-90s Malibu S as well which I've been attempting to use as a 'lightwind' board with big sails but my lack of tallent has been made overtly clear so trying to choose the right/better board for the job. I saw that video and the chaps using 11m with the IMCO as well, something to aspire to!
@@MrScb27Sent you an email.

Promo-SM 🤣
Looking good! That should be just about enough wind to pull up the centerboard and get into the footstraps. Pulling up the centerboard will help reduce drag a lot too. Just get that mast track all the way back and give it a go. I'd start with the footstraps adjusted forward and tuned to the right size so its a bit easier to get in. Then move them back once you want more speed. I see you've experienced a pretty good centerboard hydrofoil there, impressive recovery from that! Love the XR, such a light fast board.
Thanks, Chris. I did sail a couple of miles on the initial downwind trek with the centerboard up, but the mast track was not all the way back. It felt good but lots of work left to do... I need to work on my balance with so much weight on the rear. Once I was heading upwind and still as you see in the video, I had kicked it back down about halfway... (UPDATE) I was finally able to rail some a few weeks ago on this board. It was a low-wind day, but I used a 10.5 meter Sailworks Retro, my largest sail. Amazing sensation to rail more than a few seconds at a time. I think I'm realizing my smaller One Design actually rails easier, due to its narrow boardwidth (63cm vs the 66 of the Equipe II). Also explains why my old Competition, which is 70 cm in width will likely never rail at all. Believe me, I've tried. Complete with catapult. (UPDATE: I surprised myself the other day and railed my Bic Bamba in marginal winds with my 7.8 sail... I suppose I'm progressing.... yet it may be awhile before I can command the rail as you do !)
I know that feeling with a slippery old board ha ha! I've How cold is the water down there mid winter?
