    Nice video. I have a small 11' dinghy, and lost my anchor last weekend because the screw came out of the D shackle. While looking for a better way to secure the pin, I came across a suggestion to use a stainless steel split ring instead of a zip tie. That's what I am using now. The split ring has the benefit of being removable, and reusable (tool-free), unlike a zip tie. Additionally, the split ring is stronger, and does not degrade with age like a zip tie does. I also rig my anchor with the chain attached to the head of the anchor, and zip-tied to the shank. That allows me to release it if it gets hung up on something on the bottom. If you're always anchoring on a sandy bottom - this method of rigging is probably unnecessary. I'm anchoring in mountain reservoirs with all sorts of rocks and debris underwater, so being able to release a snag is a necessity in my environment.

    In some cases, I would argue that there is less pollution with a 2-stroke engine. If your 4-stroke engine's tiller is lying on its side, it will create an oil slick when placed in the water, regardless of the tiller's position. This oil slick is visible. While a 2-stroke engine burns oil underwater, the environmental impact depends on how the engine is used. I have experience with both 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines CDI : the 4-stroke is better when kept upright, while the 2-stroke performs better on its side. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

    • @smallboatcaptain1968
      @smallboatcaptain1968 2 місяці тому

      G'day tacticaladvance. I am a little confused about the question. If my outboard motor is on its side, then something horrible has gone wrong. I can only assume you are talking about 2 and 4 stroke CDI motors in general such as in chainsaws and gardening equipment etc. Sticking to outboards, my concern with 2 strokes is that some of the unburnt fuel mix is pushed out of the cylinder with the exhaust fumes. It is also a dirtier burn due to the engine burning 4, 2 or 1% oil mix. This is improved dramatically with modern 2 strokes such as the ETec. Now, the simple facts are, I will release more carbon into the environment in my car, in my plane travels and getting freight moved around the country then I will ever burn running my little 30hp 2 stroke. So, for smaller engines, I am still a big fan of the 2 stroke. SBC.

    Hi SBC, Well I finally fitted my SE Sport 200 to my 350 Quintrex Outback Explorer. I was told the SE 300 would be overkill for a 15hp Yamaha motor. I didn't get to try it solo for a few weeks as my son has been tilling the boat with me sitting at the front. So I finally gave it a big run by myself. The difference was fantastic! The boat got straight up onto the plane at low speed. So I now have vision instead of staring at the floor of my boat with the bow pointed skyward. And, if I give it a fistful from a standing start it's even better. Another bonus was the steering was much smoother. I was previously very worried about someone getting tossed out of the boat, as the steering was so sensitive. As you said, they are punt-like at the transom. The hydrofoil has made the steering much smoother, still I wouldn't suggest any acute turns at high speed in this boat. The real test came yesterday as I headed home into a southerly. This was a real problem before, but yesterday the bow stayed down and it was a much better ride.

      You must be a race/speed boat fanatic AJM. This channel is all about small boats and the basics. Off course you can get customised props and every reply you give is correct. You obviously know what you're talking about. But you must agree that to get an engine into the right rev-range on a small weekend boat setup, two or three choices will be all that is required unless that boat is way under or overpowered. SBC

    • @AJM-0205
      @AJM-0205 3 місяці тому

      @@smallboatcaptain1968 I am indeed but that has nothing to do with the basics. You don't need a custom or race prop to get the right weekender setup. Power tech propellers sold by Aussie companies have plenty of stainless options. A stainless prop with cupping is going to grab the water better, allowing you to lift the motor and change the whole characteristics of any boat. All people need is the right information instead of being told there are not many options 👌🤙👍

    • @smallboatcaptain1968
      @smallboatcaptain1968 3 місяці тому

      @@AJM-0205 I totally see your point mate but I disagree. Custom stainless props on small weekend runabouts don't make enough difference to justify the cost and protentional damage to your engine. Not to mention to extra weight spinning on the end of the shaft. Get the rev range correct with the right standard pitch and diameter and you will be 90% sorted. I could make a video about the other 10% but for the average beginner boatie that watches this channel, it's not needed. That's my opinion and I understand you don't agree, and that's OK. I used to run a watersports dept for a big resort in Queensland. We had a couple of ski-boats and our mechanic insisted we had shit props. They were stainless off course but just your standard Solas. We changed to custom props and it made no difference at all. We then changed to another custom prop and lost our high-end rev range unloaded. finally found a cup in a smaller diameter that gave up our revs back and it was better out of the hole but at the end of the day, I couldn't justify the expense so just stuck with Solas. We spent a lot of money to make a small difference. I agree with what you are saying, the right custom prop makes a difference. Just not enough for a bloke like me to go changing from a $150 aluminium off the shelf job.

  • @AJM-0205
    @AJM-0205 4 місяці тому

    If your hydrofoil makes a difference... Then your boat and motor is set up wrong, the anti-ventilation plate should not be on the water on plane, race outvoards dont even have them.... Balance the boat better, set the motor height properly and very importantly get a decent prop that actually grabs the water and get rid of that aluminium rubbish

    • @smallboatcaptain1968
      @smallboatcaptain1968 3 місяці тому

      All valid points AJM. But I don't have a racing boat set up. I don't have a jacking plate. I don't want a stainless-steel prop. I do understand, and mention in the video, that the hydrofoil is there to fix a problem. Due to it being a factory setup up fishing boat, it is far from the perfect setup that you need in a racing boat. I fish around rocks and do a prop from time to time. Just part of my lifestyle and most other anglers are in the same boat, so alloy props for me. Plus, it's only a 70hp engine, so the alloy prop isn't going to flex like it would on a boat with a bigger engine that is built for speed. Going stainless on a 70hp makes bugger all difference until you hit a rock. So, I can totally see your point. It is all about optimising the set up. Or, if it isn't quite right, throw a $150 worth of hydrofoil on the outboard. SBC

    Great video. I'm in the process of figuring out overheating alarms at WOL on a Yamaha 50 two stroke 1999 (Long reach).... Do you think the size of he prop is contributing to the problem? Its a 11.6 x 12 prop on a 4.55 m aluminium runabout. RPM is a long way off ideal range, getting to only 3500-4000 before it gets too hot (ideal RPM range is 4500-5500). I think its a heavy boat for the motor size (~350kg conventional monohull) and I think a bit more RPM would benefit the life of the engine... Okay Capt'n, I have a question and a delema for you. I own a 5 metre 1980 Quintrex Cruiseabout...the old 70hp 2 stroke is dead, and I am looking for a replacement. The problem I see with a 4 stroke is that the extra weight of the 4 stroke and the lack of power band, essentially means I should go higher in hp...but how can I, due to the extra weight on the transom? How different is my boat likely to perform with all that extra weight in the rear, as well as lack of 2 stroke power band?? Will it effect my vessel's performance in heavy seas or when trying to cross a bar to and from the ocean??? I really don't like the lack of choice, and would prefer a 2 stroke Any day.

    • @smallboatcaptain1968
      @smallboatcaptain1968 5 місяців тому

      G'day Steve. You're right mate. Two strokes have heaps more torque. It will be noticeable but that is not to say that the 70hp four stoke isn't going to get you through the bar or give you any major issues with power. I have a 70hp four stroke Yamaha on a plate boat that would be similar weight to the old Cruiseabout and it punches out of the hole, cruises along nicely and economically and is a great engine. Weight wise is no longer a major issue either. From memory, a 70hp four stroke is around 100kgs and the F70 four stroke is 120kgs. That's $10 more fuel in the tank. Not enough to even worry about. So my opinion remains, small two strokes such as 40hp or lower are great but anything bigger, its four stroke all the way for me. Less torque for sure but that's about it. Cruising and top end speed will be the same just at half the fuel burn. And weight is not a big issue. As much as a love the power of two strokes, upgrading to a four stoke won't be a big issue mate. Thanks for this post, very good knowledge and info. I'm interested in your opinion about whether a Hydrofoil is likely to assist with 'torque', for lack of a better way to describe it. Essentially, is the directional assistance helpful when the tinny is loaded up with four people and gear? Running a 25hp 2 stroke on a 4.1m V hull Stessco. Can't seem to find any testing data other than speed and bow rise with just the captain on board. Any thoughts?

    • @smallboatcaptain1968
      @smallboatcaptain1968 5 місяців тому

      G'day Mate. I am guessing that the 25hp struggles to get up on the plane and moving with such a load and unfortunately, it's unlikely that the hydrofoil with make any difference. It's just too much load for a 25hp on a 4.1m. Even a 30hp would struggle. One of my boats is a 4m flat bottom punt and I can't get that to plane with more than 3 people. And that has a 30hp with a foil. I try to avoid a hydrofoil but if I need just that extra lift to push me onto the plane or I have a ventilation issue on turning like I had in my Seajay, than I go for it. But in your case, the slight lift that a hydrofoil will give, would be enough to offset the weight. Sorry I couldn't be more positive. SBC.

      @smallboatcaptain1968 6 місяців тому

      G'day mate. It depends on the boat. The 8.5 would work better if the boat is very light but if it has some gear in it and runs loaded up, the 8.5 would put too much stress on the engine. This will reduce the revs and slow you down. Think of boats like manual cars that are stuck in one gear. IF you were stuck in top gear, you would never get on the plane because the engine is under too much load. Low gear would get you going but you would over rev and blow the engine. You have to find that sweet spot. One way to find out is to try it. If it doesn't make you go faster or is too slow to get you on the plane, just use it as a spare prop and stick with the 7.5. Hope that helps. Sorry I can't give you a definite answer.

    gday mate i have just finished my 4th restoration 2x ali and 2x glass thats me done no more 2 years of work , epoxy primer with 2 pack polyurathane 2 primer 3 topcoats . took it out for its maiden run had a few little niggles but all in all it went ok . I run my motor of the rear battery and i have a kings up the front for all my electrics i want that sucker to start when i want to go home ,all my wiring is marine wire and runs to a fuze box both pos and neg and the battery leads run to the terminal points on the fuze box .Lucky as it has a on/ off switch on the kings box but i have one at the starter battery , now i dont know if i did it right but i used the pos wire on the switch and to be honest i dont know if it is going to matter what wire you use as long as you isolate the battery as i said mine is glass so not so critical as an ali boat . I cant tell you how many tubes of sika 291 i used , seems i was always ordering 2 tubes either black or white dambed expensive but i only use it never silicon (cheap nasty shit) anyway your boat looks a million bucks now great video for anyone contemplating doing a resto take care

    Gday mate. Thanks for the kind words. That’s a great system. I think I learn more from doing these videos than my subscribers do. Im 3/4 of the way through a total rebuild on my old tinnie so I will be releasing lots of media in the coming weeks. Just needed to find the time to do the editing. Merry Christmas and have a great new year. SBC

    Gday mate thought you must have given the you tube away , i put a 6 gang switch in my boat and ran a seperate battery to run all my electronics (want my starter battery too work when i want to go home ) anyway i ran all my wiring through a fuze box that had negative and pos terminals and one of each from the battery ,a lot of mucking about with wiring but it is a runabout and its right at my fingertips next to the helm ,the good thing about having a fuse box for it is that if a fuze does go it lights up red so you can identify it easily pull the cover off and replace it , in my last ali boat i had basically the same as you have done to yours here but no fuzes (you live and learn ) anyway good to see you back take care .

    I had countless Foils on my boats..all in all..there a waste of time n $$$...most guys doing these videos r Profiting from it.1 way or another. Despite of what tell say on here

      Hi Alex. I disagree. I avoid using foils if I can but if I need just a little lift to get on the plane better or at slower speeds, then a foil is a good option. Sometime weight distribution or not trimming the hull out correctly is the issue so if all that is checked, a foil is the last option. Thank for the feedback though. SBC.

    Hey, SMB, I have a Quintrex Outback Explorer with a 15hp Yamaha 4 stroke tiller, which I've only had in the water a few times. I have 2 problems: firstly, because I have a very heavy AGM battery at the back for the bow-mount trolling motor, plus me and the fuel tank, it doesn't get up on the plane as quickly as I'd like--especially at low speed (I'm a slow roller). The other problem I'm having is when I stop or turn it's a little too sensitive for my liking--at first it felt like I was going to get thrown out of the boat. Even though I've only had the boat in the water a few times, I've learned to hang on, but I'm worried that when my 15-year-old son takes the helm it could be a problem. Aprat from a SE 300 getting the boat up on the plane quicker, do you thing it will improve stability when stopping quickly or turning? I do sound like a bit of an amateur here but it's my 5th boat, and that includes having a Haynes Signature 530 with an 115 HP motor. This was also the case with a little Quintrex Wanderer I had with a 6HP--it got up on the plane very quickly but you have to be very careful not to make sudden turns because of the flat bottom. But the Explorer has a deep V hull.

      G'day Fred. Sounds like the explorer has an issue with all the weight to the stern. The hull design of the Quintrex is an interesting one. It has a sharp entry point with that flared out bow but it is still a punt of sorts. A deep V Hull is a hull that is deep at the transom. Some manufacturers now call their hulls variable deadrise hulls and I guess technically that is true, but the deadrise is measured from the transom and not the entry point. So a hull with a 20 degree deadrise is considered a deep V hull but just about all boats have a much sharper entry point at the bow. Your explorer is very sharp at one end but is like a punt at the transom. This is important because when you're on the plane in smooth water, it's only the transom this is in the water. I love the Quntrex hull designs. They are great boats and after owning a 4m Hornet years back, I rate the sharp entry greatly. Great boat. But while you don't mention the size, with a 15hp, I guess its the 370. The 370 will plane with just a small amount of the stern in the water and by putting too much weight back there as well, this will have it riding on the keel and a tiny amount of stern. I bet its fast when she's on the plane but would be very sensitive and coming off the plane, may even have the stern wave come over and want to swamp the boat. The only answer is to get more of the keel and the back of the boat in the water. Weight distribution in small boats is so important. I will actually look at doing a video on it because I have had that issue many times in the past. I'd fix the weight issue first and see if that fixes all your problems, including the issue with getting on the plane. Ensure your engine isn't trimmed out too far and if it is still not getting on the plane, then a foil will definitely help. But I suspect the weight distribution will fix all your issues. Please let me know how it goes. SBC.

      @@smallboatcaptain1968 Thanks SBC. In the meantime I did buy the small version of the SM 300 Hydrofoil, and I'm about to fit it. I'll get back to you. And I've just realised I called you SMB instead of SBC, which comes from my many years of drinking San Miguel Beer.

    SBC I really enjoy your vids, I am a small boat owner myself and sometimes feel like we can get overlooked....I have the same yammy as yours and picked up the se sport 300 based on your recommendation. I am out here in the Northeast US so as we are now heading into our winter season you get your summer so look forward to more of your videos as I am stuck in the lounger watching the boating vids.

    Thanks for the great video! How will I know if my engine is mounted too high? What are the clear signs that the propeller is getting air, even a little bit?

    • @smallboatcaptain1968
      @smallboatcaptain1968 10 місяців тому

      The engine will start to over rev even on slower or easy turning. If you have a boat that it trimmed out and you turn sharply, it will suck in air and ventilate, but if it is doing this all the time, it needs to be dropped lower. I will look at a video that covers engine height so that you have a clear understanding of it. SBC.

    That was a very interesting video and explains a lot for me, I have a 3 meter sib and over the weekend the weather went from Smooth as silk to a Bit lumpy, so I headed home and every time I got it up it started over revving and lost power then grabbed again as i throttled off, I now have a better understanding of exactly what was going on 🙏🏽

      It could also be your prop under load is slipping on the rubber center it’s attached to. (If has that). My 79 Ranger w 175 merc would do it when trying to plane and I’d have to come to a stop and take off again. If i went lite on throttle I could plane, but it soon got to where it wouldn’t plane. It was an aluminum prop for family ski type boat. I finally Bought a used stainless steel 24p prop and wow big difference, the top end went from like 38 mph to over 60mph w steel prop

      Thanks mate. I'll get back into making more videos. I have just been away for work. The big foot is a tricky motor to prop. Bigger gearbox means to can spin a bigger, heavier prop if needed. What sort of boat is it and is it very heavy for its size?
