Affinity Photo - Boost Productivity with the Quick Creation of Backgrounds [2 RESULTS FOR 1 TASK]
When boosting a bland picture as per my previous video, you can get another freebie from the same task…
In this video tutorial you will learn not to discard, delete or throw away backgrounds created for your images to sit on - such as cool gradient effects, any of your photos, virtually every background can have another use in other documents with a little further editing in Affinity Photo and then exporting the jpeg file into a 'depository' folder..
Whenever you are creating a word document, slideshow presentation then do think about which of your pre-created bank of backgrounds would fit right in and at the same time boosting the impact of each and every document or slideshow.
In just a few minutes you too will be mastering Affinity Photo’s ability to create cool background images.

Affinity Photo - Gradients with Masks
Переглядів 4,2 тис.2 роки тому
Here’s a quick guide to using Masks with the Gradient Tool. A viewer recently asked the question of whether it’s possible to use masks with gradients in order to block out the effect of the gradient tool in a given part of the image being edited. And, if so, then can it also be done on multiple applications of gradients on different layers? Well the quick answer is YES. So, here I’ll show you h...

How do you make the faded border gradient like the picture at the start of the video?
Thanks. useful.
Affinity Photo is becoming more popular due to the fact that l don't use PS anymore because it's getting too expensive. Please continue to share more tips related to photo editing. Thank you.
Thank you, very helpful!
Thanks for taking time to do these video tutorials for us novices. You mention their are 3 places to obtain adjustment layers. I can't find the video you said from the Layers Panel to watch and why. Please tell, where.? Thanks.
Somewhat instructive, but you should really stick to the point you're claiming to tackle in your video instead of erring constantly to other topics like an overview of what Affinity is, the different operations, and so on. People are only looking how to edit the history, not getting an introduction to the software. And during all that time, you don't even show what it does to the history...
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Yes, you're right to point out that I took a while to get to the crux of the video but actually I wanted to explain the edits I was performing on the chosen image (with hindsight choosing a previously edited image would have made the video very short and to the point). Taking the history steps with the saved image allows you the option of seeing the edit steps, rolling back those steps to any point and then continue editing from that point onwards.
Thank you!
Thank you SO much! This was precisely what I needed and am surprised how difficult it was to find these simple answers in 2024. I'm so glad I found your excellent tutorial.
Glad you found the tutorial useful and thank you for the feedback. Plenty more on the channel and yet more to come.
Brilliant. Many thanks!
Sorry, please keep the video on topic. Practice a few times and remove your mistakes. Perhaps outline your topic to keep it on track.
Thanks for the honest feedback. Will bear that in mind.

Hello. Just found this video. Very useful. Thank you. Cheers John
Thanks for watching and commenting John. Plenty more content on the channel with many more in the pipeline yet to upload. Keep watching please.
Thank you for putting together this no-nonsense tutorial which answered exactly what I needed to know, in a direct down to earth attitude. I've been using Lightroom for years and for my camera's RAW photos and although I have the original v1 Affinity on my MacBook Pro, I have limited usage of that program. I've now bought the whole Affinity 2 package as an upgrade and intend to use that on my PC, so my learning curve is just about to begin. Thanks again 🙂
Glad to hear it Mick. Do get in touch once you've worked through the rest of the videos if you want me to cover anything else specifically.

Good evening Siddique, I spoke with you a couple of years ago regarding a course on Affinity photo editing but I couldn't fit them in, do you still run these or know of someone who could help me please, Many thanks Steve Hassall
Hi Steve. I'm not running any at the moment but am planning to hold some workshops at Smethwick Photographic Society (in Oldbury) in the near future if that helps. Let me know.
Yes I would if the day and time suits, thanks again and I look forward to hearing from you 👍
I like that you showed how to use the Gradient Overlay Tools in the PHOTO Persona vs the DEVELOP Persona. Question: Say you make a Gradient Overlay on one half of an image. Is there an easy way to actually "Invert" it, so you can basically mask out the half you just did your Gradient Overlay on so you can now Only affect the otther half of the image ONLY? NOTE: I realize you can just create a 2nd Gradient Overlay for the other half of the image and then seperately do whatever adjustments you want to on that half of the image. I want to know if while working on the 1st half of the image with your initial Gradient Overlay can you just "invert" that overlay and go straight to working on the other half of the image, or do you have to create a 2nd overlay?
Thanks for the query. As each gradient overlay needs to be on a seperate pixel layer (in order to use the blending modes) the only practical way to carry your requirement would be to use different layers for each gradient overlay. Using multpile layers allows you to fine tune each edit you need to do without any risk of affecting the rest of the image. Plus, it also allows you to use blend modes between those layers if needed. Or indeed delete any you no longer want. I hope this helps.
Affinity is overly complicated, and not intuitive at all.
Hi Tony. Respectfully, I disagree. One of the main unique features of AP is that it isn't bloated and overly complicated for new users of high end editing software. sure it has different tools, and different ways of implementing these tools BUT it isn't more difficult than the industry leader Photoshop! That is not only my opinion but many others too.
Excellent. I wonder why you didn't get so many clicks. I really appreciate your work. Really new ways to learn Cropping and creating Custome Presets in Affinity Photo. Thanks again.
Thanks but there is a problem here, when we put the second gradient it overlaps the first one, basically the first effect is now covered with the second one. How can I make a gradient to start from where the previous ends or slightly further, i want to have this pattern of dark to bright and then dark to bright in my photo. Thanks again 🙏
Hello there, and thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. The simple answer for your query would be to use masks for each gradient you apply. As each gradient will be on its own pixel layer just add a Mask to the layer you wish to control the gradient of. Then simply use the paint brush tool and 'paint' with a shade of grey (dark paint masks, light reveals). Try and let me know how you get on. If a quick video would help then I can load one up quickly.
@@SiddiqueHussain21 thank you for your reply… I tried but I’m a beginner and failed.. here is what I want to do… I have an image with a few hills one after another in the background, I want to reduce the exposure from bottom left of the image to the ridge of the closest hill and its ridges to be high exposure and more visible and then similar thing from that ridge to the ridges of the next hill behind it (low exposure to high) and then the same for the third hill and the rest of the image to the top right corner to be darkened… if you make a video that’s much appreciated… I am still struggling how it works and whether I need to do other things than just using a gradient tool!
Got that. I'll produce a video and post it in a day or so and give you an advance heads up.@@xbfotos
Very well explained thanks.
Thank you, i was looking for that.
Glad to oblige. Loits more everyday tips and shortcuts on other videos on the channel, do take a look.
Thanks for showing me that settings button!
This is great and the explanation is excellent. I just subscribed to the channel because his instructions and insights on the platform are gold. I mostly self thought myself to use affinity, I wish I found it sooner
Thanks for taking the time to comment Luca. Do keep watching I've got lots of videos in the pipeline.
Really good presentation. Thank you.
Much appreciated. Keep watching....
A very helpful video. Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching Juliet and also for taking the time to comment. Keep watching....
Is this shape method different from using a fill layer?
Yes, you're right you could also use the 'Fill Layer' option but remember i happened to use the rectangle shape but of course you could use a different shape (and modify it) in order for the desired effect to be in a specific area of the image only or for more graphics type of work. Thanks for watching, as usual in software there is usually at least 2 ways to skin a cat!
Good video. But isn't it possible and easier to select the sky and do an invert pixel selection to select the building?
Hello there. Yes of course you can either select foreground or background whichever is the easier and most effective and then together with an invert selection option you can obtain the selection you want to work on.
I wished I had seen this video earlier, so simple to do. Very well explained and thanks for this.
Glad you found it useful John. I trust you will find some time watch a few more tutorials on the channel. If there is naything specific you want me to cover do let me know via the comments.
Photo mechanic is better and faster!
Thank you your comment, yes Photo Mechanic is fast and much more detailed in the cataloguing and tagging department but lacks many other features which most average photographers want and need. Remember this software dates from before Adobe Lightroom and has therefore been superceeded by that ubiquitous software. And of course Lightroom and Photo Mechanic are NOT FREE but Adobe Bridge is.
This was useful. My wife has just collected a few hundred old photos and wants me to rephotograph them, a job in itself. For those that are of real value to her, your techniques will be valuable. DXO is not as fully flexible, but is usually all that is needed for social media. For prints, this set of techniques is better.
If I were asked to list the 5 Steps, I could not, could not easily find the 5 steps. It would be nice for you to list the five steps up front so we know where you are going, or we can find your steps quickly if we want to try it out.
Says 709 now. Congrats.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Edward.
You do tell me insightful things about Affinity that I didn’t know. Thank you. I do find your narration quite often is too much of a ramble.
Yes, I do like to ramble at times. I'll bear that in mind. Thanks for watching and subscribing.
Script could use a bit of simplification.
Subscribed and saved. Colour adjustment in gradient? Never suspected!
what button do i click on the keyboard if i want to "copy paste" ??? let me know
On a PC use Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste. On a Mac use the Cmd key instead.
Wow. I'm blown away. Excellent information! Thanks. Liked and Subscribed.
Thanks jcarson. Much appreciated. I'm in the process of doing more videos regarding upscaling assests, images and elements of a photo. Keep wayching...
Thank you. Interesting and useful!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Your explanations are so clear and incredibly helpful!
I can’t find Affinity Photo V2 in your recent tutorials, are you planning any?
Yes, indeed I am in the process of recording lots of new content in V2 and will be posting in the next few days. Thanks for watching and making contact.
I have 12x12 digitals for printing; but my printer isn’t a wide format printer. I need to downsize a 12x12 to 8.5 x11 using affinity v2 it there a way todo this With Out Losing picture quality, without distortion? I use MacBook Air M1. Older version of photoshop elements 2018 will allow using modify. I don’t have photoshop elements 2018 likely will not run on MacBook Air M1. Can’t find out if photoshop elements 2023 has this capability to change (downsize print image changing width and height without distortion keeping original image intact, flawless. Using to create journal pages in my journaling.
I am a new user of Affinity. Thanks for this well and easy to follow tutorial. I have one question: after completing the picturechanges, how do i save it including the changes? The video ends without showing that.
Thanks for the feedback. Once all of your editing is done then simply choose whether you want to save the end result as a finalised image (use File, Export and choose the file format) or as a work in progress (use File, Save As). The latter saves in the .afphoto file format which retains all layers and editing history. For most the former option will be the go to option. In future videos I'll inlcude the saving option at the end. Thanks for watching.
Very nice. Thanks.
Nicely done. Thank you.
I have an iPad Air 4 and there is a difference from desktop. Thanks in advance
Looking forward to seeing more Affinity Photo. Well done presentation.
