These composers predicted the future!
In this video we're talking about 5 pieces of classical music that sound like they are from the future (for their time). A piece that seems to be ahead of it's time. One that if you heard it out of context, you might guess it's 20-30 or more years later than it was really written.
Hope you enjoy and comment below with your favorite future foretelling piece.

That moment when Beethoven invented Pop Music

Today we're checking out a very specific moment of one of my favorite pieces by Beethoven. What makes this so special is Beethoven breaks away from typical classical chord progressions and writes a progression that sounds modern. Hope you have fun listening and remember to be kind to everyone in the comments. Learn my about chords here: www.patreon.com/c/RyanAbshier #beethoven #piano #music #cl...

This may be the most beautiful piece Brahms ever wrote!
Переглядів 2,2 тис.Місяць тому
Brahms is probably most famous for his Lullaby, Op 49, No 4, but I think this lullaby here is quite possibly the most beautiful thing Brahms ever wrote. Enjoy checking out Intermezzo Op 117, No 1 with me today. It's a fascinating smaller piece that has a lot more going on than you would expect at first listen. In this video I want to share a piece that I wish would become a new "Rite of Passage" piece for us pianists. We have a bunch of pieces that practically all of us play as we work our way up to advanced, and I just think this one is super special and is VERY different than most of the pieces we all play. Should have put Alkan and old Sorabji. Some truly legendary hair
no chopin??
You have the greatest ideas to keep music interesting and entertaining. Keith
I don't know if he held up irl, but Beethoven's hair is LEGENDARY at least in his portraits.
Bach, Vivaldi, Handel and Scarlatti, etc., were all Baroque composers. They all wore wigs. I don't think they really count. It was the style of the time. But, Beethoven was one of the 1st breakouts. He refused to wear a wig. Like Mozart, he refused to be treated like a servant, and to wear a servants uniform. Also, but didn't Mussorgsky write everything for piano and Ravel orchestrate all his works?

I'm confused, I wanted to hear more, so I looked this up in Apple music. It's not the the sonata your playing. What am I doing wrong?
Nevermind. I got it. The beginning of the second met threw me
@@HowardS185 glad you found it. I've had typos before and I'm always afraid of putting the wrong title/number when dragging around clips in the editor.
Id put repeated octaves in terrifying and 4-5 trills in death, gliss octaves also lower tha death. The la campanella piece where 4-5 trills exist is just really awkward for my right hand. I am actually good at repeated octaves, yeah ive had people tell me they hate them, I dont know why. Like hungarian rhapsody no 6 isnt terrible for me. And for double murky bass which I probably would ignore anyway, but if I had to actually do it, I take a very small lift off with both hands and reset, I can do it much faster, but still not as fast if I did it as a smooth motion which then my hands yes do what you showed, thumbs play at the same time pinky play at the same time. Id move double trill to death, repeating notes to little scary.
Mozart sonata K545 is literally titled "for the use of beginners". You don't get much more beginner than that. Also, the rondò a' la turca is something that you play on the second/third year of learning, so between intermediate and beginner. I feel like this list is very squeezed up. How do you differentiate between Chopin's studies, that are plenty advanced, and unplayable things like liszt's transcriptions of beethoven?
Nice vid! The thing that I love about John Field is that every piece is very easy listening for the ears and full of melody. No piece in the 7 piano concertos, 4 piano sonatas, or 18 nocturnes is skippable. It's in that area between Mozart and Chopin. Another piece that is not completely minimalist but probably the most minimal and slow piece that I've heard pre-1900 is Charles-Valentin Alkan op. 31 #25 Priere: Lentement.
Something for you to add to the bag: double note gliss. And make them go up and down
Good video !
Look into Clementi, who was predicting Beethoven’s middle-period style in the 1790s.
Vivaldi?, Shostakovich? At least on mentions?
you can probably make this video with just late beethoven. Sonata no. 32 famously has its little boogie woogie moment, (among its other forsights) Grosse Fuge, perhaps Beethoven's greatest masterpiece, almost feels modernist
Hi, what do u think abt Chopin’s 2nd sonata 4th mvt
Nikolai Medtner invented jazz rythms way before jazz started
You forgot the most important musical prediction, Scriabin, who predicted the harmonic language of jazz
This is correct. Go and look at his works from the very early 1900’s. Literally using jazz chords and concepts like tritone substitute before jazz. #11 altered dominant chords etc. his Mystic Chord is the V13 flat 5 sharp 11 in jazz theory. Using seventh chords as consonant sounds.
Scriabin also predicted the end of the world and the universe collapsing in on itself which didn't happen but he predicted it right before ww1 and the Russian revolution so in a sense he was kind of right
Love Haydn's The Bear symphony, very witty and dashing.
You should check out “In futurum” by Erwin Schulhoff. It anticipates John Cage’s 4’33” by 30 years!
Chopin sonata 2 mvt 4 💀
HAHA I just commented this before I read ur comment
You forgot tremolosssss
@@Juusturull-eo6mx I considered them, but I had to leave out some things. And honestly between trills and rotation they're kinda covered. Not completely, but again, had to make some cuts.
The Bachy fuginess😂 Kinda like a name of a pasta 🍝
Ryan, thanks so much for covering this Hayden piece. I am working on some explanations of the different psychologies of each individual key, and i'm convinced that D-major (which is see as orange) is truly the happiest key. But that's opinion , to a degree. But what I wanted to mention is that i'm using Hayden's "Sunrise Symphony" as my example of a happy sound within the Classical repetoire. The idea being that the first movement is a feeling of ascending grandiousity. Thanks for bringing this D sonata to my attention, and I am eager to see if there are any references to his D-major symphony. Do you have any recommendations of specific pianist's who you preferred on covering this sonanta? Also, do come and see my work on sound-to-color music theory. I'm at _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_ channel, if the link doesn't work. Thanks again! Subscribed! - Frank Montoya.
I recommend to listen to Mozart's gigue, it sounds like Shostakovich.
It does
so does the opening of the dissonance quartet
For me personally, the worst piano techniques are tenth tremolos and broken tenths (or intervals wider than this!), and you can see this a lot in some of Liszt's 1840s pieces. They are absolutely scary, especially if they are on the right hand and if you can't even barely reach that width-span. Major tenth tremolos are just hell.
One can find pieces or passages of Bach that emulate virtually any prior or later composer...! p.s., downvotes until you learn how to type ♭ & ♯.
I'll go real old school and use B-Flat from now on. But in seriousness, I'm not brave enough for that for the times when someone's device can't handle those characters. "Man, I love Beethovens C&$&%(×[-,' Sonata" 🤣
@@ryanabshier 1. No devices will have problems. 2. We're talking about text in a video...!
Hey Ryan, what keyboard are u using for ur vids? Thanks!
Hey there, it's a Yamaha P70. Honestly, a pretty bad sound through the main speakers and bad touch, haha, so I don't recommend it. But the direct input I use to the mic sounds great so if you use it for similar purposes as I do it's not bad.
@ryanabshier ahh I see. In that case, what keyboard would you recommend? Should/ can classical music be played on a digital piano?
very interesting
Can’t wait for the John Field episode. I recently picked up an old G. Schirmer edition of his nocturnes edited by none other than Franz Liszt, from a used book store.
Great news is I already have it filmed! I just need to edit it. So as long as I didn't mess anything up too bad it should be one of the next couple videos I put out.
Commenting for the algorithm, however, I do think that Clair de Lune is firmly in the Advanced category if you want to be able to play it well and certain passages as fast and delicate as they deserve to be played (humble opinion 😅). No one wants to hear a Clair de Lune played too slowly throughout
Haha, yeah. Clair de lune, a 15 minute version. No new notes, just really really slow
One of my favorite pieces by lizst is benediction de dieu… feels ethereal to play
Octave glissando in Beethoven’s Waldstein 3rd movement is pure horror for me😂
For sure. I put it up at the top for you!
Excellent vid! Bravo! [Quibble alert warning!] FWIW, in m. 7 of the andante you played G natural, which is probably correct - Pogorelich also plays G natural - but it's a G# in the score you project above the keyboard as you play.
Thanks, it's was a fun video to make. Yes, it's a G natural in the urtext I'm reading from, a very good edition. But posting an urtext edition still under copyright would be wrong (and they might even force me to take it down). So I have to use older, public domain editions for the videos. This one is full of dynamics and articulations too, which is unfortunate, but at least it's sharp and legible.
I am learning fingerstyle acoustic guitar and find this very helpful to understanding the structure. Thank you
I have no unfinished works. Only unstarted ones.
I just made a difficulty ranking of Beethoven's Piano Concertos specifically if anyone wants to check that out: ua-cam.com/video/Q0iTVQZsVDc/v-deo.html
