I hope that when you watch it, you can feel a little more normal, it's not just you, and therefore you can break out of that place to allow you to do your best work. :) Music- UA-cam Thumbnail- Canva Linke...

Why you shouldn't work when sick
Переглядів 5046 місяців тому
🤒 I got pretty sick a few weeks ago, and for whatever reason, I kept on working! I did have one day off, as I couldn't get out of bed, but the other days I powered through. The result? I took far longer to recover, and the work I did do was much worse than my usual work! In this video I take you through some brief thoughts on why we work when we're ill. Hey, i didnt watch the entire video, some feedback tho. super long intro for a 3 minute 40 second video. :)
Thank you for the feedback, always appreciated!
Sorry for not commenting on the actual content... but that R2D2 dustbin in the background is just hilarious :D
Haha thanks, my wife made it for me over lockdown :)
I'm only half way through this video, and i don't actually know what your other videos are about yet, but i've seen enough to subscribe :) I have exactly the same issues - film a bunch, already know how i'll edit it together and love that process, but still get stuck 😂
Haha, glad it's relatable! I suppose the most important thing is to enjoy the process. If you enjoy it, then you'll keep doing it! :)
Nice suggestions! The standing desk has been a game-changer for me!
Yes, you could certainly add that to the list!
Notice how he ignored everyone who said to vote reform
Great video James!
Thanks Amar! Appreciate it!
Thanks for these simple and useful tips! The comments section was gold too. Going to put these into practice and see what impact they will have on my work.
Glad to be of help! The comments helped me too. Would be interested to hear if you feel they make a difference.
just came from you video 2 years ago
Hey how much CAD or solid works is used throughout the course ?
Quite a lot. You will use Solidworks in all your individual/group projects. However keep in mind that in a group project, you usually give one (maybe two) people responsibility for the CAD work. You can also pick modules that help develop your CAD skills.
Thank you for your insides into note taking. Maybe one idea for the action log: - an additional column for "Last Change" (date) for a quicker way to filter new additions As for the distribution of the log: Perhaps provide both an excel (for convenience) and a pdf (for documentation). I found having a fixed version of MoM/action logs can be a real saviour in the long run (and for vacation substitutes)
Thanks very useful will use in my next meeting
Great to hear!
Taking into notes only what’s neccesary saves load off time even when learning something new
Great video, cute dog!
Reform
If you listen to Campbell there's no hope like Bob Hope for you total idiots and remember conservative has told the British taxpayer for 14 years again you got the Labour leader he used to be the Justice minister Jimmy Savile get away with a hell of a lot of things and the BBC not in the public interest his favourite word. Liberal Democrats who brought in bedroom tax when they was with the conservators in Coalition labour stop nurses being trains in the UK. You had Thatcher sale of all social housing because she didn't want councils coming to her for government funding to repair them Tony Blair opening the Floodgates and the list goes on I can tell you who to vote for if you got any sense vote for reform you'll be quite surprised. What position I hold in the UK. But I'm definitely voting reform we've had enough in the office. Labour Mayor of London. Who is totally ruined London. And the Labour leader who used to be in charge of the justice department when Jimmy Savile was up to no good with the BBC. But it was not in the public interest as he said even though he had statements and lotto proof they was up to no good. Do you really want these people in charge of your country. Use your head listen to what Nigel Farage is saying I didn't like him at first but when you do the Maths he is spot on and he's telling the truth hurts me to say. I will be voting for reform.
Vote reform
id rather shit in my hand and clap
Don’t forget your ID!
Vote green! I would recommend double down media aswell
Thanks, I will check them out!
Vote green to be a sitting duck and have rolling blackouts because “nuclear power scary” and “the NIMBYs don’t want it”
Green, the Party that wants open borders. How wonderful is that.
Thanks!
Nice lil tip James. Have you ever considered making any short doom scrolling videos. Xxx
Ah yes, I did make these back in 2023 but haven't thought about it since! A good idea though with the shorter amount of time I have available!
Just saying, I find value from your videos. I like how your videos are short and straight to the point. But I understand you have other things to do in life, hopefully you'll find time to upload more frequently.
That means a lot to hear, thank you. What do you find particularly valuable? As I said in this video, I will continue to share what I learn but just in a more simple way on my walks.
I live in France and work as a teacher i.e. in the "Fonction Publique" : relatively easy to take sick days. I was often under the weather this year. I had a lot of stressful situations to deal with ; twice as much work this year ==> less sleep/binging on junk food, which has lead my immune system to be less than operational. At least I hope this is the explanation. I vary on what to do. My principal is pretty cool and I can call in sick and have some of the missed hours put in a different timeslot. Case in point, I spent this weekend ill and in bed. I managed to teach today, but wasn't the usual efficient teacher I am. I don't know ; I haven't been really ill this year, just under the weather, enough to feel really terrible, but no visible symptoms (and my doctor needs me to be on my deathbed in order to give me a leave of absence document/authorisation). All this long ramble to say that it depends for me, sometims I power through, sometimes I don't. My principal is cool so I can call in sick and not be in trouble, but with different principals I wouldn't dare do that. Very nice video in any case, liked how you edited the video to fit your story telling and how unpretentious your style is.
Thank you for sharing! It's always interesting to hear different people's perspective. I think we can also be quite impatient with ourselves when we are sick. I know I often think I will recover immediately and then if it takes slightly longer than expected I feel disappointed in myself! Maybe we need to be more patient with ourselves! Anyway, I appreciate your kind words.
Not sure if this is a thing in other countries but in the US we only get two weeks off of work a year. If we take a week off to get better from illness then that's 50% of your vacation you just used.
That’s really interesting. I can’t comment on other industries or companies but we don’t take ‘vacation time’ for a sick day. Instead you usually get an allowance of sick days I.e full pay for a few (possibly 5-10) days and then after this number of days it might drop to 50% pay. I’m not familiar with the US and sick days.
This is quite interesting. I'm actually just recovering from surgery and despite being told to take 2 weeks off from work, I've worked from my bed the entire time with the logic that "it's a physical wound and I'm still in bed so what's the difference?". Now I'm starting to think I should take some time off to recover 😅
That is a bit of a dilemma. I should preface what I am about to write with, I am not a doctor, so definitely prioritise what your doctor has suggested. In the main article I reference it quotes a study that suggests that non-contagious and not over debilitating illnesses/injuries are ok to work with. See the exert: 'When illness is neither overly debilitating nor contagious, there is some evidence that the benefits of going to work for employees might outweigh the costs. This view is supported by a study of over 2000 individuals affected by chronic occupational musculoskeletal disorders conducted by Howard and colleagues (2009). Employees who were designated ‘presentees’ were more likely to complete a functional restorative treatment programme and return to work full-time than those who took more sick leave. Working while sick might also be seen as an example of organisational citizenship behaviour and a sign of commitment and loyalty to the organisation.' Obviously it totally depends on what your surgery was, and how drained you feel. My advice would be, if you are allowed to have 2 weeks fully off, and you won't go mad with the time off, it will likely help! Hope this helps and you recover quickly!
If you go to work when sick, you are spreading the disease to your coworkers, it is rude.
Indeed, virus' spread very easily at work, so going in with one is basically saying 'I'm ok making everyone else sick'.
2:13 Good old R2D2 bin looking smart! Has he been refurbished recently?
Yes! It was refurbished last summer!
Fun editing style for the intro on this one! Sorry to hear you've been ill though.
5:20 Very interesting point about ‘head ill’ vs ‘chest ill’. I'd never considered that before.
Thanks Jonathan, trying to be a bit more creative!
Yes, I hadn't really thought of this before. It's basically a case of how ill actually am I?
Greetings from the Grand-Duchy of Luxemburg ! 😊
Greetings!😁
🚀 still repping the house uniform 🙌. Good luck james. Ill always be your biggest fan x
Indeed I am, and always will be! Thanks bro!
Let’s go Nightie. Where you based at the moment? Let’s catch up! 😃
Good to hear from you Collard! I'm based in Sheffield these days. You?
Love this! Great video!
❤
Great vid james. Good to see you back making videos. Looking forward to seeing where this goes over the next year.
Thank you! I see UA-cam has returned for you now lent is over! :)
Interesting you feel your productivity has increased. I'm pretty flexible (too flexible, really!) with my PhD, so maybe I should experiment with an unofficial four day week. I might struggle with the discipline though. So far I've basically just worked when I feel like it and not when I don't. But that can be a little dangerous in both directions.
It depends on the working pattern of the uni. Do they expect you to be available on every working day? If not, defo give it a go as it condenses your working time and so you kind of have to concentrate better and be more efficient with your time. Plus a day off is good for you!💪
@@jdknightingale They don't care at all when I work, as long as I get enough done.
Thanks, new to BA role. My PM is leaving and I am asked to lead meetings. This really helped
Good to hear! Tbf I’m still settling into some new projects and being reminded of some of the stuff I talk about in this video. The key thing I have remembered is to really condense your notes into what the actual actions are. It’s too easy to write a lot of waffle and not be clear what actually needs to be done!
RAMBLE RAMBLE RAMBLE WASTED MY TIME
I do ramble a bit😅
Super helpful video! I'm not a project manager myself, but I have great appreciation for the value that they add. The first time I was part of a project that was being run by a PMP, it was game changing. It seemed so simple. They would identify a task (or "action item" for additional gravitas) and a target date, and then came the kicker. They'd ask, "Who is going to take that one?" while glancing around at all of us. That first time, the sound of crickets was deafening. (Yes, I was one of the crickets.) Fortunately, they didn't give up on us (nor did our managers) and stuff started getting done. Wow that was quite the ramble. Thanks for making that video and much success to you!
Thank you, I appreciate the ramble!
Thanks James... I'm new to a PM role and looking for all of the advice I can get.
That’s great. I’m still fairly new, but happy to help if you have questions!
Precisely! It's like building your personal focus zone - where the surroundings, tech, and mindset all play together. Concentration game strong!
Exceptional content 💎 James i am a 28 yr old mep hvac site & design engineer in Aec construction industry, could you suggest me some ways to grow quickly in career financially as i have wasted some years due to family reasons.. which skills could matter the most if massive success is the only goal.. If you can also share some book recommendations to read for on this topic..
Thanks! In terms of earning the most money, I honestly couldn’t give you the best advice on this. I would suggest you look at people/roles that make the most (maybe google this) and then research what skills they have? Then you can try to grow in these skills. There’s a book called ‘I will teach you to be rich’ which I’ve heard is good!
Good content
Thank you!
Hi sir, i study at NAIT collage in canada. Actually I have to survey a project manager few questions only 5mins. But I am not able to find anyone and my assignment due in 2 days 😢. I am really thankful to u if I help me
Sorry, was too slow with this. Hope the survey went ok.
@@jdknightingale yes sir thanks for replying
Hi, could share your experience after a month of being PM? And have you ever regretted choosing this path? I'm also in the same case as yours, a mechanical graduate engineer who soon will join the PM team. I hope you can share your thoughts! Thank you!
