This is your sign to shoot Kodak Ektachrome E100

- Ektachrome (and slide film in general) used to scare me enough that I didn't shoot it for years. I was always worried that I was going to mess up the exposures and waste a bunch of my money and time. But in all reality, E100 is a really easy film to shoot and the results that can be had from the film have the potential to be outstanding. If you haven't shot the film before I highly recommend trying it out.

kodak slide film slide film kodak ektachrome 35mm 120 medium format large format slide film Fujifilm provia velvia astia how to shoot slide film exposing slide film
Overexposing transparency film is so counterintuitive. When I used to shoot a lot of slide film like Kodachrome, I almost always exposed it for the highlights. So good to know!
Most of the Ektachrome 100 stuff I’ve seen on the Net seems so warm compared to the stuff from the 70s and 80s but your images really show that the cooler greens and blues are still there.
Green look beautiful on E100! I would love to be able to shoot Kodachrome!
I bought 3 rolls of this film after also reading Alex Burkes blog. Then I started having doubts mostly about whether I could expose it correctly do I need a bit more experience with film photography before I jump into colour positive, so I was about to order some kodak ektar and put the E100 in the freezer for awhile.
However after watching this I just gonna jump on in.
Nice! I was honestly in the same boat until I just went out and shot it. E100 is surprisingly way easier to shoot than I thought as it has a lot more dynamic range than other slide film I've used.
Damn, these photos are gorgeous. Nice video!
Thank you dude!
My sign to shoot ektachrome? Well.. it’s already in my Pentax 17 😊
Hahaha nice! I’m sure that combo is sick!
@@michaelbennettphoto my logic is low grain film needs a half frame camera and low contrast autumn weather needs contrasty and colourful film!
Ugh do you have a Pentax 17 then mate?
@@patientswim6888 It would be surprising if there was Ektachrome in their Pentax 17 if they did not own one
Great video Michael
Thank you!
I just subscribed to your channel. Great content here. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much!
e100 is the best!
It really is!
Sometimes I think that when this film stock becomes unavailable, it'll become almost as legendary as Kodachrome. It's really a georgeous film! It doesn't have heavy color shifts just like any other film, it depicts life very naturally but with a slight flattering. It's like what Digital photography had to look like.
It definitely is a beautiful film, it's one of my favorites! Looking at the slides in person in amazing
This is literally my favorite stock of all time. The only reason I don’t use it more often is that in the UK the price is ridiculous. It’s about $30 a roll nowadays 😔
It’s such an amazing film stock! $30 is really rough though:/
Get it respooled from cinema film! Here in the Netherlands I pay 14 euros. It's the exact same film.
The dynamic range of this film is actually pretty thin. Slide film usually doesn't handle overexposure as well aas negative film. If you liked this one try Fuji Provia100F for some portraits.
I know that it usually is, but E100 seems to have a really good amount of latitude in my experience. I’ve shot a few portraits on Provia but I wasn’t a huge fan of how it rendered skin tones.
Nice shots! Love the colors. The 35-70 is amazing! It’s so sharp and small and affordable (for a GFX lens). It makes so much more sense to me than the 32-64 (is that right?). That one gives you a tiny bit wider fov at the wide end and constant f4, but is more expensive and heavier. You REALLY have to know you need those features for it to make more sense than the 35-70.
I fully agree. The 32-64 looks great but damn it’s so much larger than the 35-70.
Provia and Velvia are sharper than Ektachrome, but has less dynamic range. Velvia shifts towards magenta. Ektachrome has a impressive dynamic range. I can underexpose 2 stops and still get reasonable scans. Ektachrome shifts a little bit towards blue. It could be purchased cheaper by buying the Kodak Vision 3 5294
That's actually how I've been buying my E100, bulk loaded from eBay.
Great video! Good info!
Thank you:)🫶
I love Ektachrome. Out of curiosity, do you mean "exposure latitude" when you say "dynamic range"? Not sure what the latter means in the context of photography.
That’s exactly what I mean. The two can be used interchangeably.
@@michaelbennettphoto Cool video with useful info, but you are incorrect about this point. These terms are not interchangeable but related. Exposure latitude is how much you can go under/over the 'correct' exposure and still get useable results, while dynamic range is how many stops the film can capture between completely black and completely white.
I also explose E100 at EI 80 and much prefer the results compared to 100. When availabe, I always reach for Provia or Velvia 50 over E100, but Ektachrome is growing on me too.
I have a box of E-6 chemicals and a few rolls of E100 in my fridge but I have not yet delved into this world. I also have 200 slide mounts but I do not own a slide projector so that is (for now) pointless but I COULD mount real slides 🤣
I want to get a slide projector so bad dude!
@@michaelbennettphoto since writing that comment a Rollei P350AF has entered my life. Apparently that family of projector is super common in Europe. (In America your are more likely to find a Kodak Carousel)
One thing I réalise about ektachrome is that it’s meant to be projected. And the projector have tungsten-halogen lights in them. So it probably should be scanned with a warm light too (tungsten balanced). This probably avoid the problem of people finding the colors are too cool and/or have a blue cast to them? Who knows. I am in the process of leaning about all that stuff myself.
20$ for one roll? Yikes.
Yeah it's a bit steep. I found a seller that bulk rolls it so it's a bit cheaper at $15 a roll.
29€ in europe..... 😅
