This "affordable" Chinese made banjo has good specs but no attention to detail. Both of the nuts had to be replaced as they were too close to the edge! Today I replace the tiny fifth string nut. Join me!

dye matching the Gibson Mastertone
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Рік тому
The last step before applying finish, in this case the most important is to match the original color of the '63 Gibson Mastertone. I have trouble with the lousy bottles the dye comes in and it literally gets all over me. This isn't necessary when just using any old nice looking color, but I go to great lengths to match the old color. This is especially time consuming with vitreous colors that b...

    Great video, but I do have a question about the paste wax removal… I’m doing my first refret on a Rosewood fingerboard and I really don’t want the wax to get caught up in the pores and getting in the way of the fretboard oil…so how do you remove the paste wax effectively?

Your videos have helped me re-enforce what I already new and learn a few new things as well. @@APSTTGTO Sure. I had been looking for a cabinet that had full length doors, so I could convert it to what it is. I found this on Craigslist, all the door hinges were broken and the screw holes all stripped out. I paid $125.00 and did all the work needed to support two slatwall boards and reinforced the back, repaired the wood and replaced the hinges. I have since seen anothe one like it, but I don't know what the brand is.

    What year is this old Mastertone?

    • @beyondguitars9631
      @beyondguitars9631 4 місяці тому

      1962. This project really showed me that up until 1963-4 when they made some significant changes, the Mastertone banjos were really well made. Unfortunately just after this time they went with thinner rims, painted the rims black, added bright colors to the necks and resonators. Generally cheapened the construction and the sound quality was poor.

    Thanks for the video ❤️ For us living in metric countries suffering from severe of banjo defficiency, my tool size is the same as that of a screwdriver bit holder or 6.35 mm. On a side note nickel is not soft but instead very hard and resistant to oxidation. The black smudge therefore most likely comes from the hard to clean internal threads of the nuts. Last, if any thing has sharp edges I file it down. It's a love thy neighbor kind of thing... 🙂

    • @beyondguitars9631
      @beyondguitars9631 4 місяці тому

      Well, when I polish the nickel the black metal comes off a lot. It thoroughly blackens my polish cloth and gets on my hands, without touching the threads. I happens very quickly. Perhaps it's an oxidation as nickel definitely gets a patina and duller look than chrome ever will. On the mohs scale nickel is right there with mild iron at 4.0, where copper is just under at 3.0. Chrome however is at about 8.5.

    • @beyondguitars9631
      @beyondguitars9631 5 місяців тому

      Their cans work best when full and pretty new, because the material just flows better, and the pressure it highest. Gettin toward the end of the can I quit using it this way.

    Instead of pouring the lacquer straight from the can, why not use a turkey baster, instead?

    • @beyondguitars9631
      @beyondguitars9631 Місяць тому

      I have done that. If the can is really full it is more useful, but then the baster has to be cleaned up with pricey thinner. But I can't argue it being a bad idea at all and I do it. Not always.

    • @beyondguitars9631
      @beyondguitars9631 5 місяців тому

      It's heavy wear, well above "normal". But I can tell it was just played a lot, as evidenced by the worn frets. Still, keep your fingernails trimmed. Frets are relatively easy to replace. The wood not so easy.

    Expensive? 40 frozen cats for thrown over the hill at least a couple weeks before the media pointed out that the PETA people had to get rid of a lot of their animals [sorry no reference]. I was running to work and I saw them so I only collected four cat skins used by the Appalachians along with raccoon skins. I made a two octive six string, classical guitar neck banjo with a 🐈 skin just to irritate both ends of music... I don’t leave strings up tense: bridge removed from the skin. An ash ring, wheel wires for roadside, open back could be altered…

    I was taught to use a combination of drum dial+ear -use the numbers to get you in the ballpark and then adjust until it feels right. I’ve always seen that done on a flat top, however! Was interesting to see that process tested on an arch top-I plan an arch top myself and have always been curious. Great video!

    Couldnt you also use your access holes (or create one specifically for)to create air flow to dry? My first thought was silicone or liquid gasket maker… I’ve always dabbed some silicone when I installed trussed rods…

    • @beyondguitars9631
      @beyondguitars9631 8 місяців тому

      That's not a bad idea. My thought is.. it does actually stick firmly to the rod, but it has enough flexibility to bend, so the fact that it sticks may not take away from its performance. I might want to limit the amount I put in, so it doesn't hold it too firmly. That's probably why you limit your use to "dabs".. Something I can't control. Maybe I should do some kind of experiments with it. But you;re right, if I have enough patience it will harden, even a tiny crack in a tube will eventually harden up the entire contents.
