Hi Alan, its good to stay over it gives more time to plan the filming, yes I imagine the video has a good retention rate because you tell a story that leads us along. I watched it twice first on my phone while waiting in a big Tesco carpark in the middle of Manchester and then on TV a day later at home. I liked the look of your smart looking hotel room, would you recommend and tell us where you stayed. Next project then, Alans photo travel, the Movie! Cheers 🍻
What a great discovery! Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it Andrew, a little further afield but a great place to see.
I wish it was 24c. That sounds awesome, but humidity is horrible no matter where you're at. It's hard to breathe that air and horrible on the body. Hydrate/relax in that awesome hotel/ keep your health and keep making these awesome videos.
Cheers Eric, our fickle English weather continues to interest us and frustrate us in equal measure!
Enjoyable watch Alan. And I really like the new hat! 💜😎💜
I wondered if anyone would notice!
Smartphone computational algorithms are very good, but the sensor is so small, and the sharpening is soO destructive, the color calibration is so disharmonious that all images look over processed,, as of now the only pleasant pictures I have ever seen come from the Nubia Z60 Ultra, which remind me of a Kodak CCD output or Leica M Series camera, yes for complex settings the phone can do what the camera can"t at a fraction of the price (it is a pocket desktop computer, with very smart operating system, advanced software and even has AI now, some smartphones have OIS and real lenses) , the dichotomy is intentional by the manufacturers that aren't ready to revolutionize the industry (cannibalize it's entire line, consumer, prosumer, professional, industry standard camera's) the idea of merging both industries / platforms, technologies has been try tested, launched a few times, but failed, and no one has developed the right business model yet ... as of yet, for each job the proper tool, and each industry safeguards it's own monopoly ...
Claíomh that has to be the most in-depth opinion piece on the channel so far, much more than just a simple comment! I do agree with you, even having gone through a phase of not using a traditional camera in favour of a Google phone and an iPhone. However there is no denying that some brilliant images have been made on smartphones (not by me!) and it proves the adage that the camera doesn't take the photograph, the photographer does. Thank you so much for taking the time to add this 👍👏🏻
My guess as to why the lens didn't work is because the IR focus plane is not the same as visible light, which is why old film lenses used to have the red R marked in them, in order to compensate. So maybe this lens shifts IR beyond infinity and you cant reach there with the focus range?
Definitely Diego. Certain lenses behave like that but it was the first time I had used it for IR. Other lenses give a noticeable hot-spot in the centre of the frame so you have to test each one, something I didn't do before packing it away!
There's a monkey forest next to Trentham Gardens. It's only about 10 miles from where I live.
Yes, I knew it was there Ian, didn't have time to visit and worried the monkey's would pinch my camera! Good to see the place looking so well. Thanks for commenting!
the longer form factor really suits your style Alan 🙂 most enjoyable even if the weather was not playing ball!! some lovely IR shots though - soft or otherwise! I've only ever been to Stoke once and certainly didn't see anything along those beautiful lines you showed us. I went to Port Vale's football ground in 1981 to see Motorhead and Ozzy Osbourne!
Ah yes, good old Port Vale. I was worried about the length of this one though Nick, you look at viewer retention and think the worst. But like you, I just do what I want to put up and to hell with it lol..!
Wow, this one is really up my alley, what an enjoyable and interesting video, not to mention beautiful images. I said it before and I’ll say it again Alan, you're “getting” good at this photography “thing”🤣. Be well and stay safe.
You are too kind Enrique, glad you liked it (thought you might!).
Thank you for the video. I learned a lot about the history of Stoke-on-Trent from watching this video. When I went to uni here back in late 80's, these historical places were far from my minds.
Hello Shamshuddin and thanks for the comment. I completely understand what you say, time at Uni isn't the time to find out about a places history! Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great creativity, stay connected! New supporter friend here. like 28 done
Thank you!
Another great video Alan, loving your channel
Thank you Karl, much appreciated!
Hello again Alan, lovely to visit Ness gardens again, I last went 40 years ago, it was described in my 70s AA guidebook as having a microclimate, yes that new entrance was the first thing I noticed, your video has garnered me into action, I need to visit it again. This is the type of place one could regularly visit with a variety of equipment and always find something different. Is it Landscape I would say yes, and to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, it is natural with a little assistance. Thanks for the tour Cheers Alan.
Hi Steve, that is a great quotation - I'll take it! As for visiting again? Go for it! As you rightly say it is a location offering many opportunities no matter what gear you use.
what a fantastic place, and bravo to the benefactor who gifted it to the people of the area. you got some lovely shots there Alan and should consider emailing a few to the gardens to see if they'd have any use for them maybe???
Thank you Nick. It is a wonderful asset for the area and maybe I will try your suggestion.
Enjoyable watch Alan, although your audio seemed to be very low comparted to how it's been in previous videos. Stunning images! And of course, interesting history lesson too. I can name several plants in this video: 7:03 in - the "tall purple thing" is a foxglove, poisonous to animals, great for a garden because nothing eats it. 8:12 in - many varieties of ornamental trees and shrubs! 9:40 in, I was hoping you'd shoot from where you're standing, looking to the right, using that lovely stone wall that lines the path as a leading line into the left curve of the path. 13:06 in, the shrub on the right hand side, closest to the camera is lovely Lady's Mantle. 14:14 in - flowers and plants are most definitley part of a landscape, so I'd say, yes, photos of flowers and plants could be called landscape photos. (Be wary of the Photo Naming Police, they might object!). 15:12 in - Seep monkeyflower (Erythranthe guttata). 15:32 in - Scarlet tiger moth. 18:34 in - yes Alan, red hot poker (Kniphofia uvaria). 22:11 in - Anemone blanda.
I place a bet with myself TC that you would be the one to name species for me! Always good to get your comments and in this case, your knowledge so thank you 👍
@@photographyforenjoyment I enjoyed being your botanist for this video! 💜🌺💜
Very enjoyable video Alan, great images in this beautiful and peaceful location, I’m just disappointed that you didn’t photograph any iguanas sunning by the pond. Be well and stay safe.
Iguanas are an invasive species across the Big Pond. 😂😂😂😂
@@TC_Conner They're also an invasive species in Florida TC.🤣
Apologies Enrique, I was sure I had replied but somehow it isn't showing up! Anyway, had I seen an Iguana in the pond, rest assured you would have been the first person to see an image of it! Thanks as ever 👍
Another interesting place I’d never heard of!
As you might have gathered Andrew, I am a fan!
Lovely images as always, thank you for sharing them.
Many thanks Clare!
Wonderful insight into the city center of Chester and great overview on the Pen F. I also have been eyeballing this camera while owning a E-PL8 which I will sell for an E M1 II.
Thank you Pamela, the Pen F is a great camera - as is the E-M1 Mk.II. I think if it was a case of one or the other, then the E-M1 wins if I am being honest. It is robust, water resistant and has the 2 card slots.
Always interesting and educational!
Thanks Andrew and I hope you had a great holiday!
TTartisan 7.5 f2 (including ND1000), Pana 20 1.7, Oly 75 1.8, 75-300, 12-200.
Hi there "CC", that is a list of quality right there! I think there is one on your list that I need to get - the Olympus 75mm f1.8. They rarely come for sale on the used market but I think a silver one would look great on my Pen F.
Hello again, I'm a believer Alan, even if you don't care, ha ha, yes I only own a couple of K&F concept items and the quality is superb, yes it can be tempting to buy a cheaper adapter but the buyer should be aware that sometimes some of those cheap adapters can be such a tight fit that they could end up stuck and ruin a lens or camera mount, its worth that extra tenner for the K&F which seem to slide on silky smooth, I do have a Kiwi adapter and I put it middle of the road between the cheapies and the K&F. Thanks for the other youtube recommendations but I'll let you into a secret I have previously checked out your other youtube subscriptions and ended up following some of the stuff you watch, If Alan watches, it will be 👍. Cheers Alan, always a pleasure.
Well I do try and follow what I regard as 'down to earth' sensible channels, usually avoiding the massive ones which are now, quite simply 'reviewers of equipment'. It all gets so predictable!
@@photographyforenjoyment I recently discovered a guy called Jamie Windsor, I can say his channel stands out as being different from many others as does your channel which I find unique it its own way.
Oh yes, Jamie has been around for quite a while, he has a great channel (nearly as good as mine 😎)
Fantastic video and awesome workspace you have!. in my house of 9 (7 kids), its hard to get a corner to work off of lol.
The advantage of living alone! On the other hand you probably have an awesome family and I envy you that Eric.
Thank you very much, Alan for introducing the Liverpool area and the great stories, photography related and other wise. Appricated. Welcome to "the bug". Please include a close up of the lenses. The Fujinon can produce soap bubbles bokeh. Not very known.
Yes I will include close-ups of the lenses in future videos for sure
Long-focus lenses often have less distortion than tele-focus lenses. And they are often quite light-weight compared to the shorter ones (more glass needed for those ;-)). They are just, well, long …
Yes that is correct Christian, they are optically simpler so the trade off is their length compared to tele lenses.
I can vouch for the quality of K&F adapters having bought and used a couple of them 🙂 fascinating selection of lenses. the fujinon is my pick I can't hear the placename Ulm without thinking immediately of the Johann Gambolpotty sketch from Monty Python!!!
"Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern.... aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm". A true classic!
@@photographyforenjoyment and a great name for a UA-cam channel I'd wager...
Maybe your next one???
I wish I could say all this interests me. But I can't (photos excluded) as I'm no lens afficianado as you are. Your studo setup is, on the other hand, quite intersting and attractive. 💜👍🏼💜
Horses for courses TC! Next weeks video demonstrates my woeful lack of knowledge on anything plant related!
@@photographyforenjoyment "Horses for courses." I'm not familiar with that phrase but ChatGPT cleared it up nicely for me: “Horses for courses” is a British idiom that means different people or things are suited for different situations or tasks. The phrase originates from horse racing, where certain horses perform better on specific tracks or courses. In general use, it highlights the idea that what works well in one scenario might not be the best choice in another.
This is a different kind of history, but history nonetheless (very interesting video), great to see you as always Alan. Be well.
Thanks Enrique, hope things are going well with you in the sunshine over there!
@@photographyforenjoyment Everything is just fine in the sunshine state, except for the very high temperature (which is to be expected for this time of the year) and the seven thousand percent humidity (yes, I like to exaggerate).
@@Enrique-the-photographer if I've told you once I've told you a million times - stop exaggerating
@@duringthemeanwhilst Haha, you sound just like my mother-in-law.
Thanks for another interesting video......No surprise about the Fujinon lens, I remember when the original Fujica 701 and 801 cameras came out and the range of lenses was acclaimed. Unfortunately the prices being asked for second hand Fujinon lenses here in Australia has them being more expensive than many new lens offerings!
Yes, the Fujica cameras were underrated here in the UK, partly (from memory) down to a pretty poor distribution network; I can't remember them having a dedicated base and I think they used a wholesaler. So I think out of all the makes I have owned, I skipped Fujica altogether and that's why the lens was such a revelation to me. It's a pity to hear that the lenses have risen in price so much, no doubt due to idiots like me posting YT videos! Thanks for commenting Warren 👍
Very enjoyable video , I found the schacht ulm lens intriguing, also enjoyed learning the difference between long focus lens and a telephoto, looking forward to you next video
Yes Karl that lens is a real beauty and it stands out from the rest!
Excellent video. Many thanks. The images from the Schacht Ulm are gorgeous. I have a theory about long focus lenses, back in the day lenses were mounted on shutters, on bellows, well in front of the film plane. I think when rangefinders and slr's became fashionable, manufacturers plonked the lens group, and an aperture mechanism on a tube with a helicoid and a suitable mount, and voila! What is your opinion on my flight of fancy?
Clare I think you are spot-on with that! When shutters were a push-fit onto the front of lenses (That was even before my time lol), lens construction was both (a) more primitive, and (b) simpler by necessity. True tele lenses took longer to design/develop and probably did coincide with the likes of Leica/Contax earlier models. Yes, the Shacht lens is a real gem!
Well, I've used my Sony A7 Mk. 1 for quite some time, but never got enthusiastic about it. Marvelous image quality for "mere" 24 MP, good color rendition and all - but the camera body itself (and the lenses back then) never felt right for me. Abysmal battery life and a clunky and loud shutter didn't help either, so it sits in a cardboard box most of the time and is only used to test LTM lenses (or rather to test if filter adapters, filters and lens hoods vignette or not, as is often the case with those old lenses). But maybe I'll revive it at some point to use the few vintage M42 lenses I still have (including a nice Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan 2.8/105 mm). Oh, and the lack of IBIS is also a downside for me (came with Mk. II models). If I were serious about using FF bodies, I would go for a used Sony A7R III for the high resolution sensor …
Hello Christian! I agree with everything you say about the A7, but I was on a strict budget and as I bought it for this specific purpose it fits my requirements. Predominantly I shoot M43, so the Sony is only here to provide accurate coverage with vintage glass. Thanks for your comments, much appreciated.
Super history video, Alan, this felt more like an episode of out of town with Jack Hargreaves, anyone new to your channel might have wondered when the photography bit was going to start, 😃 I am a little bit familiar with this coastline mainly the tourist bit and this was all new to me. On1? I always thought you were a strictly Affinity . An enjoyable watch and nice to be out in the fresh air. Cheers Alan.
Haha I even feel like Jack Hargreaves! As for the editing, yes I tend to use Affinity for RAW processing, but the new On1 2024 has some great AI tools for masking now, plus its image organising/filing isn't available in Affinity. So I use both depending on what I want to do basically!
I think Merseyside is predominantly red sandstone Alan. I did geology at A' Level and it is my one regret in life that I didn't study it further. Fantastic, really informative video as always, but not an easy place to photograph, especially in that light!! Some lovely shots of the delicate flowers against the industrial workings though 🙂 and great to see a proper pub that hasn't been gentrified or turned into a ghastly gastro-pub. lovely that they have so much history on show there
Thanks for that geological info Nick, much appreciated! No it was a bit of a flop photographically but I was pleased with the Tokina results. Here-here to your comments about the pub, so many have lost all their original character (even worse, closed altogether!), it really does epitomise an English "Boozer".
To say that this was a very interesting video would be a huge understatement, I can only imagine what you could accomplish if you had a dog or a blue parakeet. Great to see you as always Alan. Be well and stay safe.
One of these days I might just show-up with a stuffed parrot on my shoulder, like a pantomime pirate 😂. In the meantime I shall just carry on doing what I do as I believe Moe and Nick have the dog thing copyrighted!
@@photographyforenjoyment Haha.
@@Enrique-the-photographer Dexter is available for a small fee. What's that Dexter? Sorry, LARGE fee!
@@duringthemeanwhilst Ask Dexter if he accepts Visa and/or Mastercard, Alan tells me that he doesn’t have American Express.
I just thought of a new moniker for you Alan - “Historeographer.” I asked ChatGPT what a “colliery” was as I wasn’t at all familiar with that term. 😎 Very interesting vlog, enjoyed being with you! 💜😎💜
Wow TC I love the moniker! I struggle sometimes to balance one (photography), with the other (history) so please always tell me what you think.
@@photographyforenjoyment I’m certain there’s great interest in your history stories Alan, but my interest lies first with what attracted me to your channel - your experiences in and with photography. Which isn’t to say I don’t appreciate your historian side. 😎💜💜😎
Great video Alan, very enjoyable and informative. Looking forward to your appraisal of all of those lovely legacy lenses.
Thanks so much, if my videos interest people then I am a happy chappie!
Excellent content as always. That Tokina does a very good job. I had to smile when you said you had 15 lenses. Did I spy a CZJ Triotar? I have the slim type in Exakta mount, a lovely piece of photographic art. many thanks.
Thank you Clare, that lens is actually by Schacht Ulm and is a Travenon 135mm f4.5. As you rightly say it is a piece of art in itself!
@@photographyforenjoyment Cool lens. Is it a triplet design?
Very enjoyable video, loved learning about the history of the mines , looking forward to your next video
Thanks for that, I am in the middle of producing the video on adapted vintage lenses and rest assured your channel will be getting a mention!
@@photographyforenjoyment that would be very much appreciated, thank you
Nice job chap. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Randall, M43 may not be the best format for pinhole photography, but it is still fun to try these things!
@@photographyforenjoyment I think the surface area has a big impact. The small sensor doesn't allow for that much filed of view unless you could get the pinhole very close to it. But regardless, I'm trying it out this weekend. Thanks to you!!
Yes, spot-on with that but have a crack anyway!
Great relaxed, realistic & practical review. Thank-you!
Very kind of you to say so! Using a lens in practice is much better than relying on a few quick captures. I still have the lens and really do rate its value for money and performance.
