kodak portra 400 overexposed by one and half stop, picture sample with a Nikon f5 and 135mm
I normally shoot kodak Portra 400 at box speed to get a very classic film look but if you want a more modern look for fashion or commercial it is better to increase portra exposure by one and half stop.
You can see the setup i have used for these picture at the beginning of the video, the backdrop is a different colour but the lighting setup is the same ( one rotalux 53 and two large reflectors )
I dont have time or even the appropriate gear to do any BTS, i am very sorry for those who wants to see how i shoot but it's really not gatekeeping i am really open to help anyone in this industry if you have any questions or even want to do an interview on how all this is shot just send me a mail on
info@gilbertcarosin.com
My lighting setup is super simple, i believe in simplicity the rest is just a matter of mastering the light, i love using the elinchrom rotalux 53, it's highly recommended for studio shooting.
The camera is a nikon f5 the lens a 135mm f3,5 Ais ( it is an amazing lens you should get one absolutely ) the film is processed in south africa by cape film supply
If you want to book a photoshoot my studio is in Mauritius Island
www.gilbertcarosin.com/booking
you can follow the model posing in this video on
vanicee.16
P.S all you see is straight from the lab no retouch no edit just some cropping on some picture please dont start arguing about this ... this is my way... in this age of Ai and manipulated picture i stand firm about not editing anything and get everything right in camera.

    Lovely analogue tones. There is sadly a very clear lack of understanding of how a digital sensor works and why it has such perceived sharpness compared to film. To this day, a good quality film still resolves more detail than the average digital sensor albeit with much lower contrast. It is this low contrast that fools even those who think they know, into thinking that a digital sensor is much ' sharper ' than film. Film is also much smoother in reproducing tones as it does it organically rather than by zeros and ones of digital. Excellent photography, classic analogue.

The Nikon is merciless in bringing out every last bit of detail and resolves the grain perfectly, but the scans are just too sharp. People shudder when I say that at times, I prefer the V700 scans. for colour the the zeiss 135 and also the nikkor 135mm f2 dc are a better option because of their apo design ( nikon have something under the hood with the defocus lens that make it quite special with colour rendition ) they also have better bokeh but for black and white the 135mm f3,5 is still ahead in term micro-contrast and also you get the amazing face compression that comes with it ... the 180mm f2.8 ed nikkor is a superior lens in all department but i find 180mm very difficult to use in the studio even the 135mm require quite some space to be used properly,,... i have been using the nikkor f3.5 Ais with 35mm film lately ... this lens is really amazing used on a film camera with studio lighting ... you can check my other video to see how it performs on film

With some custom picture controls it's nearly perfect for anyone who wants to make most of the images straight from camera with less or no edits.. • @GilbertCarosinPhotography
      @GilbertCarosinPhotography 9 місяців тому

      i sincerely doubt it, but this might be an endless debate, after 7 years of d700 there was only one upgrade to consider either digital with medium format or back to analog photography.... if one camera can get close to the film micro-contrast well it is the d700 ( notice i dont say look because there are many different film stock with different colours contrast tonal hues grain texture etc and those attribute can change depending on how you expose the film or simply by their iso rating ) ... these looks of film can not be replicated digitally, film blend light in an organic way this result in colours that are very different, not the colour themselves but the nature of how they mix together ...while you can get the colours digitally, you will never be able to blend them in an emulsive way like film does another very important aspect of film is the way it retain highlight information and crush very quickly the shadows ... i had to completely change my way of using light in the studio so that i can push different gradient of highlight ( with digital you work with the shadow detail ) on film the shadows get lost if not properly exposed but you get some magnificent gradient on the highlight that digital can not retain ... my next video will be about black and white and you will clearly see how film can retain some pure white highlight detail on the clothes of model with dark skin complexion ... something that quickly become a headache with digital... one last thing i work with a dedicated high quality lab that process my film properly ...so i dont edit anything when the scan come back .... this a huge benefit for my workflow ... and the scan are higher resolution that the d700 photo ... ( i get a 15-20 mb jpeg for high quality scan the resolution is 3649x5397 on portra 400 )

    My D40x 10Mp sensor made beautiful enlargements too bellow 400 ISO the quality is close to slide film ! The D700 cmos files are great too (I own 2 of them now as well as a D500) but it needs more pp work than the CCD NEF files. The CCD files just pop with very few adjustments

    I bought one not long ago to sit alongside the Nikon D7200 I use for Landscape, etc. Basically, I just wanted to try Full Frame for not too much money and because my PC has old hardware, but upgraded hard drive to SSD for fast boot up and a bit more responsive performance. The Nikon D700 was the ideal choice as the files are not too big, so don't bog down my older computer. Your right 100%, 12mp is more than enough, and the image output is impressive for its spec back then! . It's nicely weighted and feels so good handling it, a proper tank!

      its also very durable and will probably outlast your d7200, i have just added a nikon f5 to my collection will post picture from it in the coming months the f5 is another legendary beast pretty much an analogue version of d700/d3

    Verry informative video. Do you know if merging three 12mp shots with this camera (taken by a super sharp 50mm prime) could provide excellent detail for acrylic prints?

    • @GilbertCarosinPhotography
      @GilbertCarosinPhotography Рік тому

      i sometime print up to 1meter by 1.50 meter without any detail loss... not long ago people would print billboard with a 6mpx camera .... what i like to do also is 3 vertical panorama shot ( or more ) and stitch it with affinity photo sofware to get higher resolution

    • @Classicdslr
      @Classicdslr Рік тому

      @@GilbertCarosinPhotography Interesting experience. Can you be more specific about the quality of detail I could expect at 24x36 inch prints? Its only 12mp but I have seen the original Fuji XT1 which is 16mp to produce way sharper and detailed images that its pixel density would suggest. I would like to stich vertically 3 shots and my fear is the short side will not reach 24 inches with excellent (not just passable deatil from normal distance) and make a photo with sufficient detail from verry close inspection - as if it was printed at 300ppi. From your experience printing 24x36 do you see exceptional detail from close distance? Acrylic prints need to be tack sharp as they counr as a premium product.

      @@Classicdslr the lens you use will definitely have more impact that the amount of megapixel my 50mm is way sharper than my 28mm and close up there is a difference but i prefer my 28 as it has more character even if it less sharp not related but i have just started shooting film on a nikon f5 ... i will compare both the d700 and f5 in an upcoming video... the following is done with my 28mm its a long exposure so it not perfectly sharp but the micro contrast on this lens is huge and i simply love this lens .... ua-cam.com/users/shortsN18XPnahJ6E?feature=share

      @@GilbertCarosinPhotography Thank you for you answer. I am also researching this microcontrast feature of lenses and you made me curious even more by saying the 28mm lens has it but it seems like the 50mm doesn`t but is much sharper? Have you found a way to distinguish which lens has it? Some say any lens with less than say 7 elemnts but I have seen even those with more elemnets could have such....

      @GilbertCarosinPhotography Рік тому

      @@Classicdslr hoo no .. not what i meant ....both have huge amount of micro contrast the 50mm is very sharp also but i do prefer the 28mm for landscape as for the micro-contrast the king of all is the nikkor 135mm f3.5 AI which i ALWAYS use in my studio ... 180mm f2.8 ed is also very good but to long to use in studio ...but if you move to medium format you will see that all lenses are very good and have huge micro - contrast by nature... something 35mm have a hard time achieving perfectly
