Just being curious here, but are you going to do a Blind play of Trails into Reverie. if that's okay to ask.
That is perfectly fine to ask! Yes, I plan to do a blind run of Reverie after finishing Cold Steel 1 -4
It always gets me that Lloyd has an actual choice to get his brother back, but it would mean losing the new family he has gained instead.
still a nitpicky that rixia and wazy MOST IMPROTANT LORE is hidden on bond event
8:26 Arahabaki automatically repels physical damage and to explain the magic shield known as ' Makarakarn ' it will only reflect 1 magic attack back then dissapear, for example: if you use Panther to use a fire attack on the shield, the fire attack will reflect but since Panther resists fire, it won't do much damage 😉 37:10 Yeah the ' Rebelious Elephant ' can really wreck you if you're not careful 🤔 I highly recommend giving status ailments as often as possible then using Akira ( Ren) to knock it down ( unless you have items that do Bless damage) and either take it down completely when you're not high level enough for loads of EXP or try recruiting it if you are because he is pretty good fusion material 😉 This Palace is indeed pretty confusing, but you're doing good so far
Will you be playing Ys vs Kiseki Alternative Saga in the near future? Actually, would you consider trying out Ys? It should make for a shorter playthrough compared to Trails so it could be used to diversify content if you so choose.
I'd like to try my hand at Ys vs Kiseki in the future (granted I'm not that great at fighting games which some of my friends will easily attest). Ys games in general? I do have a few which I haven't tried before so can certainly give those a whirl! One I'm keen on would be Ys VIII
GungHo did the Grandia HD collection and are doing the Lunar Remastered Collection.
Yeah it looks like the remake is using the same engine as the recent games so the graphics look pretty good. One new thing I noticed is they added cel-shading. it gives the game a unique feel IMO Also Schera's age at the time of FC was 23. I always thought in the original she looked way older in her portraits 😅 I do like the new models. Her outfit has slight changes compared to the original and doesn't have the shawl anymore
well, alot of the older drawing styles look..... old, it was just the last 30 years or so were characters had more rounded or younger faces, i mean, look at sky giliath and azure giliath.
They couldn't animate the shawl in a way they were happy with so they took it out is what I heard
I actually really hate lloyd, he just annoys me lol
Our boy is really a womanizer, isn't he? Hey protagonist in CS, you won't be like him.....right?
Lloyd should sense the fbi coming at him now bcoz of tio😂
So my take on some your questions: (1) I think we are all assuming that the combat is going to be similar to the "Calvard" games system of the last few years. In short there was a progression from being able to hit the enemies on the world map (Crossbell) to get advantages to the start of the battle and kill low level enemies, then in Cold Steel this expands it a bit. Then in the Calvard games they give you the option of playing solely in a real time mode on the maps (so not only being able to attack, but also activate crafts and arts), but by pressing a button you can switch into turn-based ("Tactical") mode. Some people were disappointed about it going from a purely turn based to a hybrid, but I think it is worth remembering that historically Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes was a real-time combat game, and playing it at the moment I nearly always go into turn based mode anyway unless they are trivial in which case I will just spam attack and move on. (2) Gungho is a fairly new publisher but it has been said that their current president/CEO is the former one from XSeed that did the early games and it is said that it comes from that relationship with Falcom. There has been talk from a former Xseed member that Falcom contractually owns the Trails English scripts so there will be no issue in just bringing that over to Gungho apparently, although they are apparently going to add a few bits here and there to provide consistency lore wise with the later games. (3) Where they have been able, the English voices that did the battle system were used in the NISA Cold Steel (some VCs pulled out and new higher profile VCs that you will possibly hear when you start the next series in English) - so for example Stephanie Sheh (heard in that Ys x Trails, has voiced in Estelle in everything voiced in English except the Langrisser x Trails Mobile game). With the Japanese VCs, unfortunately I think some have passed away but the most of the main cast have remained the same (eg. Akemi Kandi has been the VC in all 13 japanese game instances of Estelle) and I think the expectation is that they will put up the old VCs into the game. (4) WRT Linux compatibility, all of the Trails games and particularly the most recent ones have Linux compatibility (eg. I am playing the latest games on my Steam Deck and it runs on my Linux Mint /Ubuntu system as well) - this remake is using Falcom's new in-house game engine from 2021/2022 that has been used to create those most recent games, and the president Kondo has talked a lot at the Shareholders meetings about wanting to maintain the greatest amount of accessibility, so I guess I am saying that I 98.6% expect that it will work on whatever system you have. I would also put a reasonable probability of it coming out on GoG as well; again accessibility has been order of the day for Falcom.
Thanks as always for the thorough reply and for the details. This helps a lot! As for the system I'm using, it's a flavor of Linux so yeah hoping that it'll be good to go for playing the game. Since I've been able to (mostly) get all the Trails games that I've played running OK thus far on it, I didn't know about more recent releases so this gives me peace of mind.
@@elehayyme Ditching Windows 11 for Linux. Based. I'm thinking of moving fully to Linux once Windows 10 is too outdated. I'm already familiar with Linux through Steam Deck.
@@renruiz I wasn't sure about using say something like the Bazzite distro (or waiting for the SteamOS) for stuff other than gaming and general internet stuff like UA-cam; I do a bit of programming, pixel and voxel art and sometimes some work stuff like writing reports, presentations and the like, so I ended up going Linux Mint on a mini PC for that stuff and am planning on doing the same for my home laptop once I am 100% - which distro are you thinking about?
@@richardisted3703 I have a second PC running Linux Mint as well although I rarely ever use it. I'm thinking about running Pop! OS since it's supposedly the best distro for a gaming PC, but I think waiting for SteamOS to have a desktop version might be a better idea as well. I use the second PC mostly as a work PC for my small business.
38:00 And now Wazy's swimsuit choice makes perfect sense.
I know, right?!
Let's see, the opinion about Ellie is understandable, but what can I say? For me, it's okay, not all characters have to be super deep or complex, and not to mention the romance, it doesn't have to be something that has a lot of focus or impact on the story. Now, as for bonding events, I can understand that someone doesn't like that all that content is optional, but at the same time, as a long-time Fire Emblem fan, I would say that I'm used to it, since the lore of the characters is usually hidden in specific supports, and until Awakening came out, you could only see 5 supports per character. At the end of the day, while these events can bring interesting things, whether it's a romance or lore, I see them as a simple reward for the player, the game itself already tells you what's necessary and the rest is simply an extra and that's it. Having said all that I hope you enjoy the long journey that will be Cold Steel
The music breaks the Zero Evo OP for me, but I like the visuals there at the end from the end of Zero. Overall I prefer the PC one. I really like the Azure Evo OP though. It is very spoilery, even without context - and even more with. Especially with those KeA slice of life shots near the end. Music is also good in the Evo one there. The regular one is also fantastic. I also do agree: they are have really been improving since sky. I like how the original was able to display a lot of hints about epic things coming up wit still being vague. Like the flag of Crossbell burning away during very short shots of tanks and the railway guns, but without any focus on these things. "There is gonna be heavy conflict for Crossbell but no details here". Some very short shots of stuff without context just to show "hey here are cool new antanogistic seeming people and you'll have to see their involvement" I played the NISA PC versions. I think Azure released just before I started Zero. :D The Portrtait mod even still got updated after I was done (as I noticed in your LP). Something that is a big spoiler but would not be noticed by first time players that I also love about the Azure Evo OP is the shadows of Bell and Arios in the beginning down at the sun forts cradle.
I think many people would agree with you that Lloyd x Elie comes across as a bland romance; personally, I think that is the key issue is in them creating the choice and not integrating a single romance into the story. Let's be honest; if in Azure KeA had used her powers of causation to ensure that Elie was off studying abroad or taken on a foodie trip on Ries recommendation throughout the whole game, would we have noticed? If I think about the romances in JRPGs that "work" like say Lunar or Grandia or indeed Sky FC-SC (or at least those are ones which I think really work - happy for others to debate); the stakes in the romance are high because those character relationships are fundamentally central to the plot. If it was Elie that KeA was snuggling up with at night, if it was her that discovered her missing at Mishelam, that there had been a strong interaction between them about KeA, and had she gone into the World of Zero with Lloyd to find KeA at the end etc., then those are changes to the story that make Elie more meaningful as a romance (as well as probably turning it into the Aincrad arc of Sword Art Online). But the consequence of that is that you lose the freedom of choice of a "bonding partner" in the game. You could further argue that in an episodic series like Trails it also creates huge consistency issues going forward; so much so that I think the only logical canon partners for the Lloyd and the next MC are that they are forever single (or a single father in Lloyd's case). It also means there are lots of single "others" left over as well because they have to be available to have been "an option" and/or another path that competes with them even having had a reason to have a relationship with said partner in any case. This is the problem with Western CRPG romances as well I find; tbh I personally would rather just have a game that concentrates on the actual lore and plot and if they want to do romance integrate it. Having said that, I think Falcom do a good job in telling backstories through these bonding events. Randy, Wazy and Rixia information on their past in these ultimate bonding events are actually really well done; it is a bit of a pain they you only get the info at the end, but I think that gets better sorted in the next games by having the backstory feed through each of the bonding events throughout the game.
the evo opening were made more with assumption that you played the original games, wich mean they are more spoilery, dosent really make sense anyway, they should have just remade the original opening with more animations and thats it, but they wanted to make it diffrent.
The ost of Evo version actually has few hidden gems. One that I really love is 'Cerulean Blue Romance'. It's a seriously overlooked track imo.
One thing I recommend to change things up is to, if not watch the openings from the beginning, then listen to the opening themes just by themselves. Sometimes they showcase recurring motifs heard throughout the rest of the OST, and it can be worth to get familiar with them early. Like for all those times that one is playing the game and the opening's motif starts playing to hype you up.
original zero op is my favourite songwise and original azure has my favourite visuals. It surprises me how much I prefer the comparatively barely moving visuals of the ogs vs the fully 2d animated evo ops but I just do
PC openings for me. Falcom knows how to hide well their spoilers. Evolution ones I like because they are animated and show interesting scenes, but they don't work as a fisrt time play... They could work as a "second opening" once you finish the game once. I did play the Geofront translations back in the day, so PC for me was my first interaction with these openings. Looking forward to your playthrough of Cold Steel! (and since you mentioned it on the ending of your playthrough, you may as well consider Reverie as Cold Steel 5. The 5 games are internally considered Legend of Heroes VIII after all) Have you considered Nayuta Boundless Trails as well? It's not really connected, but it's a very good game as well, full of Falcom's charm.
Thanks for sharing your experiences! I am glad that the Geofront versions existed back in the day so that folks could experience the Crossbell Arc before it was released officially outside of Japan. As for Boundless Trails, I haven't considered it but have heard of it. I think it came out on PSP first and then on PC? I'll have to check to see if the shop I get games at has it or not (considering they have other Falcom works, I'm thinking it would be the case too). Thank you for the suggestion!
been waiting for this lol
I really like the Evo animations, but the original tracks are better, also the Evo openings spoil A LOT, lol, also loved your choice of Lemonade in Hand track, I really like that song, also 13:34 is my new wallpaper now
Evos opening for zero kinda takes the mysterie away from where/what kea is
Ngl I kinda miss the hand-drawn style openings of Zero, Azure and the first two CS games (with CS1's being my favorite), despite them being mostly just semi-animated stills. They just feel nostalgic to me for some reason, even though I played these games only around a year ago. A heads-up for the CS games - they all contain 2 openings: aside from the regular one, there's also a so-called pre-opening (which is basically just a character introduction/showcase). If you decide to watch those as you play, you can recognize them by a "Nihon Falcom Presents" at the very beginning of the clip. Just, for the love of Aidios, skip the one in CS3 - that one's actually worse than the normal opening. I guess even the devs must have felt bad afterwards because both the CS4 openings contain absolutely no spoilers. Also, a tip - if you know how to navigate to the game's directory, you can find the openings as regular video files (the _PRE and _OP files in data/movie_us or data/movie folder). That way you don't have to rely on UA-cam's compressed videos.
I also laughed at Elie shooting Lloyd in the EVO Zero opening
Love Azure's opening. It does spoil some things, such KeA's appearance or the tree, but the lack of context makes it fine. If anything the opening redirects your attention away and places your worries on the threats such as Ouroboros, Jaegers, foreign powers and perhaps even potential remnant's of the cult if the shot of the that one demon has any weight to it. But it doesn't paint the key characters in a strictly negative light. Heck you'd probably chalk the tree up as a part of another one Ouroboros's wacky shenanigan's they got up to. Favorite shot to me is 9:29 and 9:30. The zoom in on the conference where the representatives and flags are (seemingly) on equal levels with each other and the next is Dieter as he's bearing his weight down on the shot, distorting the view of it and both raising and lowering Crossbell's flag's.
I like the evo op’s alot but also i’d never recommend them until after you beat each game lol
I weirdly enough really like the azure evo opening You definitely shouldnt watch it until you veat the game but between how much the action scenes in it always end up hyping me up and the montage of cute kea scenes at the end i just always have a blast going back to watch it
For the eventual cold steel opening videos id recommend doing 1 after cold steel 1 and 2 and then another after 3 and 4 since they pair well together On that note each cold steel game has 2 openings. 1 is just a traditional opening and the 2md is more of just a character reel (showing character designs and names) with music in the background Up to you if you want to save the character reel openings for later or not
the Character reel in Cold Steel 3 is God Tier just for the track alone, that's all I'm gonna say, man
I think in terms of the original vs. evo, for Zero I like the original one a lot more, but think that the Zero Evo opening is comparatively one of the least egregious for spoilers. For Azure, I like the visuals for the original more but actually prefer the Evo song! The Evo song is a remix of “Concentrate all Firepower!!” from Azure, and I’m a sucker for motifs/remixes. Loved watching your Trails journey through Sky and Crossbell! Can’t wait for Cold Steel~
The Original Zero opening is My Favourite but nothing tops CS3 opening imo Looking forward to The Cold Steel Games and im glad You Play them in English too.
The CS3 opening nails the emotional context of the player coming into that game and is definitely one of the best openings. Having said that, I don't love the accompanying instrumentation chosen for the song though; it is too heavy and unbalanced, particularly the bass guitar and drum kit doesn't go well against the lone singer. It is typical of Singer's arranging style and his choice of guitar synths. You can argue that there is a programmatic (story based) reason to have that clashiness but the spirit of my composition teacher says that I think it can be done better whilst still capturing that element.
Okay so Azure Demiourgos (kickass boss theme aside), might be one of the most difficult boss fights in the series. Phase one starts with it summoning four adds, complete with two stacks of immunity and art reflect which they can reset. In order to advance to phase two, you need to kill the adds before they can be absorbed by Demiourgos, which happens automatically if they are left at low health for too long. Each add absorbed rewinds time by 15k health (you killed two during the last cycle so it rewinded back to 30k). This phase is a little weird since it doesn't directly indicate that the adds are important I don't think, but at least none of the attacks thrown at you here are super threatening. Phase two is the real fight. It can two shot you with most of it's attacks, many of which are undodgeable. It has a single target vanish and can dispel all buffs, including immunity, and is always able to follow that up with an attack. The adds it spawns are also very tough, can cast double immunity on themselves and infinitely respawn (though this does allow you to obtain the "Sixteen Going on Severing" achievement the chaddest way possible). Even with all of that, you can make the fight to go smoothly by forcing it to spam godless void, that can be done by casting only as long as it can be done before the bosses turn to minimize turn loss. That is until it's health gets low enough that it starts charging for reality collapse, it's a party wipe, no ifs, ands or buts, if that goes off it's a reset. The only way to avoid that is to go into burst mode and kill it first, if you have any burst orbs left you can use them both to charge it up and also to prolong the enhanced state once you start it up. I wouldn't blame anyone for calling this fight unfair just off the mechanics surrounding the fights endgame and requirements to beat it. But, it is worth it to see Lloyd talk to his brother one last time after everything, imagining a world where he doesn't die. Followed then by the heart to heart to bring KeA back to her family.
Even though I am disappointed that you are going to play the games going forward in English and leave the great Japanese voices behind, I hope you will enjoy the next arc as much as the previous ones.
Hey there! I wanted to follow up on this as there is a bit of a misconception. I plan to do the Crossbell arc however I do want to do it for English and Japanese (I don't want to leave the Japanese voices behind as I'm used to them too). I'll be posting up a comment in the community section shortly to address this further.
FYI: 1:57:58 Scott Tijerina is a UA-camr (KillScottKill, is his channel name). He is a big Trails fan and is one of the translators on Geofront (the fanbase group that did the English translation patches for Zero and Azure before Falcom coordinated with them to make these official English releases a few years ago). Sadly, he passed away before these official English versions got released though he's still part of the team that worked on these official releases but he got really sick. It's nice to include him in the closing credits. He is a big part of why we got these translated versions of the Crossbell arc.
Great job on finishing it, and glad you really enjoyed it!
Congrats on finishing. Enjoy the next arc.
I don't usually comment much, but now is probably the best time because it'sthe final episode. I really love your insight and analysis of the characters and events. It's quite fun to see your reactions. Looking forward to Cold Steel.
Congrats on finishing this arc and thank you for another great journey I had the joy to experience again! I was looking forward to Crossbell since I first discovered your channel, and I couldn't be more satisfied. A lot of feelings came back and some new ones too! I'm glad you also enjoyed it Looking forward to everything there is to come!
I think you'll like Cold Steel even though the vibes are pretty different compared to Crossbell and Sky. Congrats on beating the best (imo) Trails game!
Congratulations on finishing the Crossbell duology! I'm very much looking forward to watching your Cold Steel journey! I still advise you against playing the game both in Jap and Eng, but that is simply because I really hope you enjoy the new arc as much as you can without burnout.
Absolute peak fiction
I hope you're excited for Persona Simulator next 😅 (for legal reasons this is a joke)
Congrats on finishing peak!
Congrats on finishing the game. Since you're currently playing Persona 5 you're gonna recognize a ton of voices in the EN dub. There's a massive overlap in voices which is really fun to pick up on.
Congrats on beating the game! it was a long fight, but you did really good and it was worth it, to get KeA back, happy new year!
Thank you and Happy New Year to you!
Congrats!!
something i was at odds with geofront and nisa, at first, they were reading Yin as Gin, since that was the proper way to read it in japanese, when they were talking with Grimwood, he was telling them about the assassin called Yin, since its the same name but prenounced diffrent in chinese, they would reffer to Gin as Yin from that point, and you can hear it in the voice acting if you pay close attention.
