Introducing my TURBO lawn mower project

Welcome to Play on Wheels! In this video we introduce the turbo mower and give an overview of the build. There will be plenty more videos of this project and many more to come
That should be a 394, Some of them were 350 hp I had one in my 65 88, convertible Had a 455,I found a low mile 394 100 bucks back in 1986 that thing would smoke the tire off, and that was a big car
Definitely looks like an engine swap. I drove a 64 Dynamic 88 and then a 98 Luxury Sedan for over 25 years all across America, then moved to Brazil in 1999. The 98 sits now in a museum and the 88 starred in a crash derby! I had collected every option possible for these models while cruising junk yards across America and did my own maintenance and restoration. The 394 was a bullet proof engine and the roto-turbo-hydramatic never failed me. Both running cars, I bought for $100 each and I changed oil every 3000 miles! I used to be the 64 year advisor many years ago for the two Olds clubs and had all the books, etc. I still have my fond memories.
Thanks for the comment! It's hard for me to tell not being as familiar with the olds engines.
I have a 64 F85/Cutlass sitting in my yard. Used to be my wife's sisters car in high school.. (long time ago) Currently has a 455 that runs but the intake gaskets are so rotted it wont start anymore. Thanks for the video, maybe ill get off my butt and get to work.
Have you checked the vin to be a 68? Only reason I ask is it has a 69 front valance and 69 doors. 68’s had wing windows and front parking lights that wrapped around the corners. Very awesome build tho!! I subscribing to the channel!!
The parking lights do wrap around, nothing lenses are missing. It's a 68 and I believe the doors are original
I also have a 68 is why your video jumped out at me and I love the fact that it’s not getting LS swapped like many today and mine is still Pontiac powered. I also love the none hideaway headlight on these cars, not many were ordered that way so they’re rare to see, especially with the endura bumper. Most without hideaways had the chrome bumper.
Hurry up and make a new video
I've watched many engine start videos recently, usually with expert mechanics involved who know precisely what needs to be done and in what order. With your videos I like the fact you're approaching the challenge as a DIY home mechanic might with a careful, measured approach. One piece of advice I've taken on board from the pro mechanics is that they never start an engine without first changing the engine oil, in order to avoid the risk of spreading potentially damaging debris. In one video featuring a 1966 Citroen DS ID19 restart project, they poured diesel into the engine cylinders and let it soak overnight. I'm not sure how wise, necessary or recommended that is but it did help free up the engine. Here's the video reference in case you're interest... ua-cam.com/video/dwvQq_Axnbk/v-deo.html Incidentally, I'm not trying to help promote anyone but just thought you might find it helpful. Of course, it's quite a different car but with similar challenges. For your videos, I think it would be a great idea to speed up more of the repetitive tasks you carry out, such as removing spark plugs, freeing up tappets, unscrewing bolts, etc. IMHO doing so improves viewing although I guess some might disagree and prefer to watch every single detail. I also understand it becomes quite an involved video editing project which requires further time investment. BTW your car was new not too long after I was born. Hence my interest! Looking forward to seeing the engine run and further progress. Best of luck!
Wow, old school Gen 1 Olds 394. Before I saw it I thought it would be a 330. Bummer it wasn't the 4 barrel high compression mill but it's still cool being a 394. Looks like it's been sittin since LBJ was prez.
your volume is allover the place.nice vid tho
Thanks for the feedback! Still working out the mic and where to position it for best sound but getting there
Would not know if you were on fire
Come on man you won't know jack until you put some real work onto it , so so average so far
Thanks for the feedback!
Those pistons and bores don't look so bad . Very dry and in need of some soaking to get it unstuck. If you can get a pan under the oil pan and loosen the oil drain plug slowly and see if you can let a few drops of oil come out when engines set for many years any moisture or water that gets inside will collect at the bottom of the pan as oil will float on water. That will let you know if any great amount of water has gotten inside and if so drain the water and old oil out and if posable drain the oil filter as well. Before you try to spin it over with the starter motor and pump water through the bearings.
I filled them with atf so they were plenty lubed when I turned the engine over by hand
That looks like an interesting project. I've never tried that before. I'm guessing that engine is a 330 cubic inch. I had a 64 F85 a little smaller car . I enjoyed the car. It was 10 years old when I bought it. I gave $350 in running condition. The 330 wasn't a high RPM engine, it made good torque . Only had a 2 speed automatic. I hope you get it running. Unfortunately it will probably need a complete rebuild. I did that with a 1950 Ford F2 (3/4 ton truck ) . Had a flathead V8. As worth it. I kept the truck for 12 years, sold it to build another project . Good luck sir 😊
Thanks for the comment!
Egge Machine and Kanter Auto Parts check with them for engine and suspension parts
I'll do that!
I love 64 Oldsmobiles. My Dad bought a 64 Super 88 with the 394. What a torque monster. I wish he'd have sold it to me instead of trading it in at the dealer for a 73 98. I have subscribed. I am watching from Ohio. Where are you? You never tried to see if it would turn over?
New video is coming today! Thanks for subscribing!
There might still be the 'Oldsmobile Club of America' based in Ohio. great source for parts. Also, "Hemmings Motor News" is probably the best source for parts anywhere. Available at some news stands. Hemmings still exists. Best of luck with this!! I've owned several many years ago, and the 394 is nearly bulletproof. One hell of an engine.
Great info, thanks!
The old crossover exhaust manifolds
what size shoe do you wear
I drove a 64 Dynamic 88 to work for many years in the late 70s thru early 80s. Same engine as that (394 2bbl) . Car was a tank! A reliable, go nearly anywhere, snow, ice, whatever tank. I wish I had it back,...
Awesome!
..looks like a 64 Chevelle
394
Don't give up on it,get down and dirty it's worth it😊
You should check out Nivlac57. He has been racing and developing that engine for years.
Clean it up get it running and go from there.😊
Working on it!
It didn't look bad at all under those valve covers to me. It looks like those rockers and springs were not rusted up or seized up at all. I bet if he would replace the plus wires cap and rotor points and made a fueling method it would fire up fairly quickly. Spray all the mechanisms on the carb down with penetrating fluid (WD-40 or Whatever your favorite spray is) and make sure it's not clogged up or the jets aren't blocked and away she'll go!
I have another video coming soon, let's just say all hope is not lost
pressure wash that rough jewel and see what you have. it may be held together with rust.
Definitely!
The H is a 1964, the L is a 394 260 hp 2BBL.
put your man pants on and grab a socket and see if you can turn the motor..skirt blaster on everything ,,take both valve covers off and hit with oil..take the plugs out and hit it with oil and see if the motor will turn..dont automatically think its junk
Heard that! I'll go for it in another video!
clearly a 394
I had a 64 Jetstar, 4 dr. , I got it off my Dad, he told me it was 350 Olds in it but I thought it was a 330, either way it had the speed automatic, i think Olds equivalent to a 350 turbomatic, i don't remember what Olds called theirs. My cousin had a 64 F85 now it had a 330 and powerglide ( 2 speed auto) . Yours sure looks like a big block Olds, ,394.
Like grandad used to say "That boy doesn't have a clue, but at least he ain't scared "
Can't decide if that's an insult or not haha
Why don't you start by cleaning the engine with Gunk and pressure wash it?
Great idea!
Also you pointed out the vacuum gauge on the console instead of a tachometer. My Starfire has a tachometer there but our family bought and stripped all the good parts of a 1964 98 sport coupe that had the bucket seats and floor shift console with a vacuum gauge instead of the tachometer. So it seems you could order a1964 Oldsmobile that had the console and Tee-handle floor shift with ether one.
I wonder if the build sheet is inside somewhere?
@@PlayOnWheels A build sheet could be under the rear seat or behind the rear seat back. and we found one in a 1965 Oldsmobile convertible stuck to the back side of the driver's side rear arm rest/side panel. But when the car sets where the mice get into the inside the build sheet is most likely to have been chewed up.
@@PlayOnWheels My 1964 Starfire has cardboard tags stapled to the underside of the carpets that say barton carpet mill September 1963 and my car has a low VIN number and the original owner we bought the car from said he ordered the car in late August and took delivery in the first week of October. So all the parts of the car were manufactured in late 1963 including the engine and transmission so if your car is an early production model too would be why your engine's date code is 1963.
@@raymondsmith7993 can also be between the gas tank and trunk floor
Call Jennings Motor sports , he will have it running in a couple of days.
It's probably a 394 Starfire high compression motor about 345hp
You have what looks like a car someone custom ordered. back then you could order a car any way you wanted. Not like today where you can pick from two or three different option packages. My 1964 Starfire convertible's engine number starts with J and ends with S it is a 394 4 barrel high compression engine. Witch is the standard engine for a Jetstar 1. But somebody could have ordered the 2 barrel lower compression 394 so they could run it on regular gas. The other odd things I notice is it has power steering but manual brakes and it has the heavy duty cooling package because it has the much bigger radiator. Look closely at the bolts on the driver's side exhaust manifold because it is the one that would come with a Starfire or Jetstar 1 for dual exhaust. if this engine was swapped out of another model car it would have the outlet flange in the middle pointing down because the single exhaust pipe would go down under the oil pan and go into the front of the passenger side manifold that has the block off plate for dual exhaust on it. If you can free up the engine it would run on today's gas much better than the high compression Starfire engine's 10.5 to one compression as I need to add octane booster to keep my Starfire from knocking.
I was thinking the same thing. Someone ordered it which would explain the minor variations from standard offering
My father had a 1964 jetstar 1 and it had a 394 engine 345 hp 4 brl carb. it was a fast car.
That was known as the "Interceptor" engine. Also used in police cars.
Seems legit.😎
Nice.
9/6/2024=170
C’mon man see if the motor is freed up and give it a shot. It’s only your time and a few bucks for oil and gas.
I'm not finished with it just yet!
Obviously you're not mechanically inclined.
Not at all
@@PlayOnWheels😂 But you apparently have a sense of humor.😂
Thank you , somebody needs to bring that guy down to " EARTH " in a split second !!!! The problem is , it's a " PIPE - DREAM " , but , the sad fact is, there's a big old " STINKY - RAG " stuffed in the top of that " PIPE " !!!!!!! WHAT - A - LOAD - OF " KA - KA " !!!!!!! PARK THAT " TURD - BUCKET " BACK IN THE SWAMP WITH A BUSH GROWN OVER IT, WERE YA FOUND IT !!!!!!!!
Love these cars!😊
Thats very cool. I realize a lot of work, and thinking was involved. For it to run that good is great. Congratulations Sir. 😊
Thanks!
Could be a 330 but it does look like a 394
Sure looks like a 394
Looks like a motor swap out of a Dynamic 88 low compression 394 California engine
Nice car model years General Motors used usually start in September so a 64 model actually started in September 1963 so that’s probably the original 394. There’s a day code on the engine two that tells you month year and day on the engine. I would say if you cleaned up the engine and pull the plug, soak the cylinders down with penetrating oil really have a good and leave the plugs out. You might be able to get it to turn over if you do try to turn it over try to do it at the fly wheel. You have more torque there than you do at the balancer and Oldsmobile, like Pontiac had what they called a premium engine, which was high compression with a two barrel and then you had a compression with a four barrel there’s a code on either head at the very front by the exhaust port that’s got a letter tells you what head it is
Thank so much for the information!
20 minutes.. and giving up????? 394 cu in 2 Darrell makes 345hp not a slouch by anyone's measure... is it seized? May Be savable ...
Haven't given up quite yet! I'm going to see what else I can find out
Keep pushing through. I’ve got a 64 old Starfire, which is the same body style, but just upgraded from the Jetstar.. I’ve had a couple of the jet stars in the past. 330s were junk 394 is where it’s at. Even if yours is a two barrel.
@toddtrue3880 330s are not junk just too small of an engine for those full size cars also the first 442 had a 330. 290hp
This car could easily be an early year model that came off the assembly line several months the previous year. Very common. Just because that block is a year earlier doesn't mean it isn't original.
I wondered that. Early model with older parts?
Early 60"s Oldsmobiles are cool.
Thing is. Those cars weight is lighter than a new camaro
Right, and this one is pretty much gutted so it's even lighter than stock I'd guess
I 100% agree cuz if you didn't keep that you wouldn't have that part right now
Exactly!
