✨ FAQ ✨
What kind of content do you make?
I make videos about science, doing a PhD and living with tinnitus and hearing loss, with a little bit of life thrown in too.
Who are you? I’m Beth, I’m a northern first-generation student that's recently finished a PhD in biology and is embarking on a career in academia.
How old are you? I’m 28, although I often forget how old I am. I feel about 20 sometimes…
Where are you from? I’m originally from North Lincolnshire but currently live in Leeds with my partner Zach and our two cats, Hendricks & Pablo.
How long have you had tinnitus & hearing loss?
I’ve had tinnitus in my left ear for over 11 years and subsequent hearing loss for about 9 years.
What was your PhD research on?
I’m studying platelet signalling pathways in the context of cardiovascular disease. I basically ask for blood donations all the time which makes me feel like a vampire.

Got my tinnitus 8 years ago due to an accustic trauma. Was very hard at the beginning. Took me 8 months to habituate to a level where i didn‘t care anymore (like if it wasn‘t there). Strangely 5 months ago it has changed to a level i notice it again. I admit it has become annoying again. I think it was stress (work and privat) which has made a new high pitch sound appear. Guess i just have to let time pass to get used to it again.

Im kuldip from maharashtra Im 22 I got this T because of my headphones(i used to listen songs everyday) On 24th jan 2022 just like a normal day i was listening music on full volume for about 4 hours... And i slept... After some time i got that ttttttttttt sound in my both ears.. I neglected it but on the second day it was constant and loud.... On third day i went to ENT and he said it is normal dont think about it and gave me bitahisten for 10 days but no results so on second meet he said to do hearing test i did it and it came normal no hearing loss But i felt my ears are sensitive to horns of vehicle and loud noise starts irritating me Three months passed but no results During allopathy i was in depression, lost weight and was not able to sleep at all ( insomnia ) Then i tried ayurveda and made some changes in my lifestyle neurobion forte helped a lottt And now it is around 2/10 Now i started studying Change your diet, do pranayam, stay hydrated, calm down and give it a time.Nowadays, i dont feel it anymore!! Yeah one dude said i couldn't draw because my eyes i drew wasn't realistic enough. Now one of the things that hypnotizes people about my art is the eyes. I do realism art and obviously that means i now spend about an hour making sure my eyes look not only real but have a galaxy inside them instead of your usual light reflection. I clearly took that personally

She's from the UK. Most people get a government loan for their undergraduate degree, if they can't afford to pay the 9k a year for tuition. She's likely on Plan 2, which means she starts paying back 9% of her wages once she earns just over 27K annually (2k a week) and only 9% on the money after 27K. After 30 years it's written off. Yes interest adds up. But it's not the same system as America. You don't need to be mountains rich to earn a degree comfortably when you are a citizen of and study in the UK. It's seen more like a tax than a loan because of the way it's set up. Postgrad studies usually get funded or a similar government loan.

Student life is hard but even the poor can achieve well if they attend secondary school and sixth form/college - you get bursaries for being from a low income background and other disadvantaged groups. Obviously it doesn't change the social challenges but the financial aid definitely helps out. Plenty of low-income ppl doing uni in the UK and everyone just pays their loan and eventually gets it written off... or just never earn 27k in the first place to have to legally pay it back. Or you earn well over 27k and you're in the sweet spot to do a few lump sums and get it done with.

The education system is very different in the UK, I went to a state school and I took out a student loan for my undergraduate degree as well as working part-time during my degree. I’m the first in my family to go to university and study a post-grad degree so your assumption that my parents paid for it and chose my career path is completely wrong.

Yo tengo tinnitus severo desde hace 2 años. Lo he pasado horrible, he ido a una audioprótesista, llevo audífonos.

The more people I tell (friends, relatives), the more people I find have tinnitus as well or know of people who have it. I'm done with restaurants with loud music playing or TV screens on walls with blaring sound levels of sporting events. I have found that, if I'm fully engrossed in an activity eg oil painting, reading, cooking, exercising, etc I unconsciously become unaware that I don't hear the tinnitus but as soon as I realise it I hear it again. Weird.

  • @eliran07

I'm only 16 years old and I've been suffering from it since I was 13, the cause was my excessive use of headphones. I still remember that one night I fell asleep with music from my bluetooth headphones and I woke up with tinnitus. From then on it never went away, I tried Ginkgo Biloba and Bush Fuchsia but they don't do much. If I put the headphones back on they would cause an infection (increased tinnitus, hearing loss and burning when a headphone goes into my ear), so I won't be able to wear them anymore. I only had one visit to the otorhinolaryngologist and he told me that I had an ear injury and it's chronic even though I don't stop hoping that it will disappear on its own. It increases when I lie down but I can live with it enough well.

Tinnitus is annoying when you focus on the ringing, you get acustomed, and can ignore it. Avoid comepletly quiet basements, it will make your head feel like it is being compressed.

My bf is doing the last 6 months of his phd and has decided to close out all his friends, family and me for his final write up and I'm finding it really hard to understand why he cant even have a zoom call once a week or something. Tbh im lucky when I get a voice message rather than a text (we message every morn and evening). I feel guilty putting any pressure on him, but want to be there to help him though his stress and see him occasionally but he gets stressed talking about it or meeting up. Is this a normal response for the final period of phd and do you have any advice for me surviving the next few months with no idea on the next time I will see him. Thank you, your video was very informative

Hey, I’m so sorry to hear that must be very difficult for you. Hopefully this is just a temporary thing for him to keep focussed. Everyone has a different way of working, for me I really relied on support from my partner, friends and family but I also knew that I couldn’t keep up socially with everyone when I was in the final stages of writing up. I was quite selective about how I spent my time but I also ensured I took breaks. I hope it gets better!
