Hello Everyone! We are moving on with our Beatles Albums variation retrospective, interestingly enough almost 1 year to the day since we released the unboxing of the CD Deluxe boxset of Revolver on this channel (a link to which you can find below). And because we are (sort of) celebrating that 1 year anniversary, today we share with you episode 7 of our Beatles Albums series covering their 7th ...

Hello Everyone! Well, it's been a minute. We're back with the 6th installment of our Beatles Albums series, and we're looking at their second album from 1965 and my absolute favorite album of all time: Rubber Soul! This is an all around awesome album, one where the US version managed to be a strong record but where I still feel like the original UK track listing is unbeatable. Plenty of variati...

Hello Everyone! Normally this would have been a video dedicated to Rubber Soul. Unfortunately, a couple of days before I was supposed to start working on it, I broke my foot, and now I am mostly immobilized, and will continue to be so for at least a couple of weeks. Hello Everyone! Finally back with the 5th episode in our Beatles Albums series, and this time we have the first album from 1965 and the one accompanying their second film: Help! Hello everyone. We're on to the 4th episode of this series on The Beatles Albums variations, today with their 4th studio album: Beatles for Sale. Hello everyone. We're continuing this week with the 3rd episode of our series on Beatles Albums variations with their 3rd studio album from the UK: A Hard Day's Night. To my ears, the original uk mono (us mmt) pressings win over the 2014 all but rubber soul. They made that 2014 rubber soul very very well.

    This black-band Sergeant was released in 1982 and contains the inner groove. The 1986 release has a red band and the sound quality seems to have improved. However, the red band version does not contain the inner groove. This series is expensive even in Japan. The 2014 box set is also quite expensive! Aim to complete your collection.

      Thank you, I am. And yeah, I was gonna mention the absence on the inner groove sound loop in the Sgt Peper episode that will follow sometime soon. I think it is the only version of Sgt Pepper I have had so dar that did not have it.

      Well technically speaking each main record is 30 dollars (standard price). If you multiply 30 by 6 (which is the no. of the albums) you get 180 dollars. Then you are basically paying 120 bucks for The Beatles Story and the box.

    The Hard Day's Night white vinyl was for National Album Day, not Record Store Day. NAD is a UK-only event that usually has 20 or so releases on coloured vinyl that are specific to UK retailers, while Record Store Day has two yearly release days internationally, the first in April and the second on Black Friday. RSD releases not only coloured vinyl editions but also rare reissues, and RSD only releases that are not available after that day. The Japanese mono reissues on red vinyl were not from the original master tapes but from second generation mix down tapes. They are very nice, quiet pressings. Keep up the videos and collecting!

    • @BurgundySkies
      @BurgundySkies 5 днів тому

      Thank you... x3. Regarding the Japanese Red Mono collections a corrected way to put it (according to Discogs) would be that they were pressed using the UK mono masters.

    • @earlwarren4860
      @earlwarren4860 5 днів тому

      @BurgundySkies Discogs unfortunately isn't always correct. They let users amend the information without having any factual information to back it up. The Japanese were given second generation mix downs. EMI almost never sends their masters out to any other territory, and especially not the Beatles. Germany has has new mix down masters made on occasion, which is why the Magical Mystery Tour LP from there was the only true stereo LP up until the mid 90s. Japanese LPS were originally pressed from the US masters, which in some cases were even third generation tapes. In the late 70s and early 80s Japan upgraded their masters with second generation tapes, which are duplicates from the original EMI UK mix down masters, and that's when their sound quality really went up. Japan also used virgin vinyl and the red wax editions used the Everclean vinyl, a high end vinyl which I believe was exclusive to Japan, so the sound quality really improved with Japanese pressings at a time every other territory was starting to use lower quality vinyl. Keep up the good work!

    • @BurgundySkies
      @BurgundySkies 5 днів тому

      Thank you very much. Indeed it did seem a bit out of character of Apple or EMI to ship original master tapes all the way over to Japan, but I must admit I did not think much of it, those being the 80s I just assumed maybe they hadn't yet realised how extra careful they had to be with these. Was also thinking about how they had lost/damaged some of the earlier tapes as well, so... Anyway... I hope to have a chance to compare the sound of these Japanese beauties with some of the 2014 ones. The one comparisson I managed to already make, but will not have a chance to repeat is between a 1969 UK Mono export pressing of Sgt Pepper's and the Japanese one I got. It's true the Japanese one was cleaner (as expected I guess), but overall I did not feel like the 69 UK one was significantly better. Obviously this is very subjective but... there it is. Thanks again for being here and for the clarifications. As a very green collector... this world is a thick and tricky jungle.

    Birth of the Beatles was an early biopic film which deserves an honourable mention. All Beatles related biopic films are spoiled by physical miscasting of the band members, screwing up the music, or making alterations to history. Sometimes music licensing problems have been the issue. The point of John and Paul, being mirror images of each other at the mic would obviously not be helped by having a shorter John. Given the reviews I will give this one a wider berth.

    • @BurgundySkies
      @BurgundySkies 5 днів тому

      Yeah most films were either poorly cast or with low production value, or were suffering from quick cash grab syndrome. Birth of the Beatles was the Pete Best leaning one, no? PS: "wider berth" - nice, I'm gonna use that.

      It’s not the U.S. configurations I dislike, it’s the sound quality. Some big wig at Capitol decided he could do a better job than George Martin at mixing their records. I’m so glad the U.S. Albums box set fixed those problems by not including the Re channeled versions of the singles. By including both mono and stereo mixes, they gave us the choice of which tracks we can put in the playlist. Deirdre also remixed Please Please Me, With the Beatles and the non album singles and B-Sides in super three dimensional stereo. And if that isn’t enough, another company remixed Rubber Soul, so we’re good to go. I also might add that the latest Deirdre remixes include the film edit version of I’ll Cry Instead in stereo (this is the one where the first verse is repeated after the third verse); the U.S. Rarities version of I Am the Walrus with the deleted extra bar of music just before the yellow matter custard verse and a new stereo mix of I’m Only Sleeping with all guitar solo placements in tact. Life is good.

    • @BurgundySkies
      @BurgundySkies 6 днів тому

      I for one started with UK variations back in the 90s, so I guess it would be even harder for me to gravitate to the US albums. And the sound differences are a turn off for me as well, but I do have to admit that a couple of those US compilation albums are well built in terms of tracklistings. Meet the Beatles is one of them.

    I personally think that they made "A Hard Day's Night" the album for the album day FIRST then realized that it was it's 60th anniversary so they gave it that treatment in the description which is probably why it uses the 2009 remasters

    A very thoughtful review of this film. I agree with the vast majority of points you make regarding casting, pacing and, most importantly, the superficiality of the story telling; Brian Epstein is a very important part of The Beatles' remarkable story but they did not capture his complexity and he deserves better. Oh, and yes, the Tex character was awful in both concept and delivery.

    Not a great movie. The cast wasn't completely terrible, even the actor playing Lennon wasn't entirely bad, though this missed his external edge and dominance, I loved the guy that played George, the Paul actor was alright, the Ringo actor didn't look so much like hime but did a Fair job at playing him. Jay Leno as Sullivan was horrible. The guy playing George Martin wasn't bad. Some of the set recreations were really good... The all you need is love staging looked amazing.... But you can't do a Beatles movie without a single Beatles song. It's not really that compelling of a story without the Ed Sullivan performance or really any post Sullivan performances... You didn't get the sense that Brian was a strong business man in the movie. A story focused on Brian's closeted homosexuality doesn't really go anywhere because it was always in the closet... Which is how it was but there's nowhere for that story line to go because culture didn't change, acceptance didn't change, the overdose wasn't sinister, a lot of people topped themselves off to a similar fate in the late 60s... Easily my least favorite Beatles biopic.... But Leo Harvey-Elledge as George Harrison was good

    • @BurgundySkies
      @BurgundySkies 8 днів тому

      I agree with all your points. I think the Lennon actor (despite being good and clearly trying to give a good performance) was just not equipped to relay the dimension of John's personality. My view is that it's similar to the situation of Ramy Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody. Awesome actor, totally involved and strong performance, but not able to relay the force and larger than life dimension of the character.

    So it’s pretty obvious you have absolutely zero original opinions or tastes. Also way to block me, can’t handle being called out for the ignorant prick you are? You don’t know what alternative is, you don’t know how to read -that woman was 22, not a teenager- you think other people are following a “herd mentality” when again you most definitely have zero original opinions on anything. I can’t imagine just how lovely you really are, you’re most likely a misogynist too. Honestly I can’t comprehend how someone so incredibly basic is able to claim someone else is following the herd. You’re clearly obsessed with being labeled as an individual, but let me tell you buddy, you’re just a brick crammed into a wall who’s paint has faded and become dull, that’s all that makes you stand out

    3:00 I don't think Pepper is any longer considered the Greatest of All Time beatles album. At the time it blew everybody's minds.. but now we can look back on what came before it, and what came after it. I would say before it: Rubber Soul and Revolver are now contenders. And after it, White Album and Abbey Road. And me personally, I think Mystery Tour is a better album. Pepper just blew everyone's minds at the time because it was so different. I think it's now taken at least a 4th place on what we now know. White Album and Abbey Road are the best. Revolver and Rubber Soul are right there. Magical Mystery tour is still highly underrated and I would argue it's the better album over Pepper.

    Just a couple of minor points. Firstly the US Revolver is not the same track listing as the UK album, so apart from the title and the cover it's different- a couple of songs even have different mixes.. It was also released three days after the UK Revolver, on Monday August 8th, 1966.And lastly the compilation released in late 1966 was titled " A Collection of Beatle's Oldies" not " A Collection of Oldies".

Hopefully as your view shifts you will see the marvelous eclectic and hap hazard track listing as a work of art - whether It was intended that way or The Beatles just got lucky. At a certain point I will attempt to do a personal ranking. I tried to put one on paper a year ago, and then again a couple of months ago. They look kinda different. I do appreciate the unique build of this album, albeit one of the reasons for it being quite so eclectic is also their need to push put as many tracks as possible to get them out of their previous engagements. But beside that... when I will do my ranking there will be a couple of things that will influence my choices: 1. How many songs of each album I like (percentage wise)? 2. Does the track sound pleasant to me? Beyond this there dozens of other reasons, many of which very specific or personal, but those above are my main.

Just to comment on the 1987 and 2009 Stereo CDs - these are apparently the same George Martin remix version, but digitally remastered on the 2009 CD. The Mono Box has the Mono version of the album, but also includes the original 1965 Stereo mix as a bonus - (this is the same for Help! also). As far as I’m aware, this is the only way to currently get the original 1965 Stereo mix, aside from picking up a pre-1987 Vinyl copy of the album. Really grateful that I found your channel ❤️🙏

But when he was asked about it he said that he didn’t remember remixing those albums in the 80s. To be fair, when you consider the amount of music that he worked on over the years, I think he can definitely be forgiven for that:) I really appreciated you showing the Cassettes too - according to another Beatles-focussed channel, the official Cassette releases from EMI also sometimes had the track listing rearranged - apparently it was to do with song lengths and making sure the tracks fit onto either side 1 or side 2, so not just something the unofficial releases did:)

      No, I mean it depends what you're refering to. The original UK cover with the iconic picture and the font of the album title was used for both from the getgo. But since the album was released in both countries at the same time, they applied specifics to both covers, the parlophone logo and full cover picture for UK and rest of the world, and the white band at the top of the cover with Capitol Logo for the US one. The 87 CDs were made with the UK covers mostly, except MMT. But there were separately some US Captiol covers issues as well.

I would love for them to replicate original records and covers, incl for Mono Mix, New Stereo etc. But... your idea is great. It would be awesome if they included a copy of the US album as well. Some facts if you care: There are 2 stereo mixes of Help! and Rubber because in 1987, George Martin heard the original 1965 mixes and didn't like them. This was the year that The Beatles were getting their premiere release on CD. Yes, EMI waited a long time since the 1982 debut of the Compact Disc. Martin called the original Stereo mixes 'wooly' and remixed them in '87 for their CD debut. The 2009 remixes stem from the '87 mixes, so the original '65 mixes have never been updated. They were just transferred to the Mono CDs. And for those who are interested, ALL CD's are stereo. So the Mono CDs is just the mono mix on each channel. 100% identical. Sgt. Pepper was when the Beatles actually started climbing the stairs to the control room and having more of a creative input on the mixes. For a month, The mono mix was worked on with ALL Beatles present whenever they were there. The Stereo mix was done in....a week? a few days? much shorter and only Ringo has confirmed to be present. The Stereo mix has very interesting choices (like removing the phase shifting effect on John's Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds vocal or the pitch being lowered in She's Leaving Home) but nonetheless weren't as much a Beatles creative input as the mono mix. Also, for the 2017 Giles Martin/Sam Okell remixed the album for it's 50th anniversary using the mono mix. That and the fact the Beatles were creatively involved with the mono mix tells me how definitive the mono mix is. Revolver objectively has different elements in each mix. John's "A LIFE OF EASE" line in Yellow Submarine is present in the mono mix, along with two acoustic guitar chords at the beginning, whereas the stereo mix has silence when Ringo sings "In the..." then music comes in at "town". There are different backwards guitar solos I think in I'm only sleeping and a different fadeout in Tomorrow Never Knows (one fadeout is longer so you hear more music) Paul's Automatic Double Tracking (ADT) error is fixed in the mono mix, but that mistake is present the first time he says Eleanor Rigby. All 4 of these albums were recorded on 4 track tape. Most of these songs feature Ringo's drums only on the left channel and different instruments specifically on one side of your speaker/ear. The stereo mixes are better. George Martin went independent from EMI in 1965, and I believe Rubber Soul was his first outing from that. Why he went back to the Rubber Soul stereo mix by HARD panning the instruments on the far left side and the vocals on the far right with SILENCE inbetween is beyond me. His 1987 mix rectified this a little, but you CAN'T listen to Rubber Soul in stereo. It's mono all the way (like Please Please Me and With The Beatles).

      Yeah, I mention the alternate mixes for Rubber Soul and Help in later videos when I had both to compare. Well Rubber Soul is still pending. To be honest in headphones some of these mixes are jarring. In speakers at a certain distance they sound quite nice, but I have to say I slightly prefer the 2009 CDs to the original 87 ones, at least for some albums. Also tend to prefer some of the recent new mixes by Giles.

    • @BurgundySkies
      @BurgundySkies 3 місяці тому

      This!!! You mention The Night Before, but it goes for almost any song, meaning if you put all versions of a song side by side, I doubt anyone would ever choose one year/version of the album/pressing/cd. You have songs that sound excellent on the 2009 remasters, some which sound pretty nice on the 87 cds, some which sound better in Mono, some in Stereo, some original mixes still stand, but Giles did an excellent job on some tracks and made more recent versions of albums the go-to for me (vinyl and CD). One one hand it's nice, multiple versions can sometimes mean different but still pleasant experiences. One the other hand... having to own "n" versions of an album just to get the best variations is a big frustrating.

  • @matthewhumcke3182
    @matthewhumcke3182 3 місяці тому

    Great content, man. I've gone down a rabbit hole of this subject and would like to share some context. In the stereo booklets, the end section talks about how the album was recorded. Something to take from that are 3 numbers: 2, 4 and 8 When these were recorded to analogue tape in the 60's, these numbers represent the amount of tracks on the tape itself. Please Please Me and With The Beatles were recorded on 2 track tape: instruments wired to one track and the vocals to the next track. This left small room for overdubs (like handclaps, harmonicas and harmoniums added after the song was recorded) without risking sound degradation by recopying the tape to a new blank tape to free up space. Those first two albums were recorded like this to edit the vocals and instruments easier. It's intent was to make the mono mix the best it could be. The stereo release of Please Please Me was released MONTHS after the release date of said album (obviously mono), and George Martin had no clue they even released it! Stereo was an afterthought. As you basically said, kids had cheap record players with one speaker. Some of their dad's who were audiophiles had the stereo setup and were listening to classical music or jazz. Rock n' Roll was pretty much mono in the UK until the late 60's. The next two albums mark the most common tape used: 4 track. Much more room for overdubs. They put the voice in the center! an organ here on the left; a guitar solo here on the right. But the ONE reason I can't listen to the Beatles in stereo is because they didn't put the drums in the center like the vocals! Ringo is off to the left channel like a feature instrument rather the backbone of the song! This sounds strange in Paperback Writer, I Feel Fine (which ruins the vibe of that 60's af song) and countless others (Sgt. Pepper!) This may not bother all. I researched the recording history of the first 9 albums. George Martin and engineers (Norman Smith and later Geoff Emerick) would start to put in effort with stereo (in my opinion around Beatles For Sale). Some of the mixes felt rushed; others were solid. In my research, mono was usually FIRST to be mixed and was the thing that got finished or remixed first. The only time stereo took precedent was for obligations outside of the album (like United Artists needing mixes for the movie and American soundtrack). Producers will even tell you today you want to focus on mono before you dip into stereo; to get it down perfectly balanced. And I feel that's part of George Martin's goal (along with the familiarity with UK rock n' roll being a mono dominated genre). Stereo mixes of A Hard Day's Night and Beatles For Sale are good. A Hard Day's Night has warts (like John's misaligned double track intro on 'If I Fell' and Paul's squeaky voice at the last '...was in vain,') but for the fan that doesn't care, or the fan who can get over RINGO not being panned into the center (drums on only the left track, that's insanity), then you can get away with the stereo. But if anyone is still reading, thank you first of all. But also, The Beatles, their producer and engineers were mono focused for a very long time. Their self titled album ("The White Album") is where it gets complicated. But if you can pick up the mono CDs, even just to burn them, do it. They were meant to be in mono. The artists wanted their finished product to be what mono sounded like. Stereo was in its mainstream infancy in the UK and sometimes was an after thought. I like to think it was split in pieces and spread around the stereo soundscape. It doesn't blend, and it's music chunks in corners and some elements in the middle. It's rough. The Beatles mono mixes sound like a band together in the same room, balanced and engineered to give you the impression it's one coherent song. The mono mix just sounds normal and full.....altogether; the stereo sound pulled apart with not enough panning or reverb to make it sound like one collective song. edit: spelling and addition of 'full....." at the end.

      Thank you for this. Additional context and info will always be welcomed, if not always for me, at least for other people visiting. I became familiar in the past couple of years with all the elements that shaped the original mixes, and this demix tech that has been out for the past two years should allow for stronger stereo mixes. Of course, given that any mix is a personal thing for the engineer/producer, and the fact that anyone can make mistakes, there will always be results that do not please everyone (see the new mix of Magical Mystery Tour from the 2023 Blue album). But, at least for Stereo, some of these were sorely needed.
