Pan Making in South Africa, 1995/6
Переглядів 10 тис.9 років тому
This footage was taken when I had my pan workshop out at the Old Power Station, outside Grahamstown in South Africa. I rented an outbuilding that had once been a pump room when the powerstation was in operation. It was small, but the weather was generally good enough that we could work outside a lot of the time. There was an abandoned house adjacent to the pump room, which we used as a place to...
Studying Pan Making in Trinidad, 1994
Переглядів 2,2 тис.9 років тому
These are some clips from my visit to Trinidad in 1993/94. At that time I was living in South Africa, and had been dreaming of a visit to Trinidad for 10 years or more. When I did finally make it to the island, I stayed for about 6 months and spent the majority of my time working at a Panyard operated by Keith St Louis. This video shows some of the people, activities and tools in the yard. The ...
Jonathan Scales / Tracy Thornton Jam Session
Переглядів 1,7 тис.11 років тому
An impromptu jam session with Jonathan and Tracy. I was tuning pans in Asheville, NC, and had just tuned Jonathan's pans the night before. He came to collect them, and Tracy was hanging out with us, and Jonathan asked Tracy if he wanted to jam. This was the result, completely improvised. Wish I'd had decent mic on my phone though...
Carnival Puppet "Miss Trini"
Переглядів 1,7 тис.11 років тому
This is Miss Trini, one of two 15 foot tall Carnival Street Puppets I made. She was inspired by Peter Minshall's "Tan Tan" Carnival Queen. She's a work in progress at the moment - she need hands and a scarf of some kind, maybe some jewelry too. All up weight is around 30lbs or so, I can comfortably operate her for an hour at a time without any real issues. The

Chrome Heritage C Lead
Переглядів 3,8 тис.12 років тому
This is an example of the Chromed Heritage Series C Leads that I build. These pans have a classic bright pan sound, across all the notes. The high notes work too! Recorded using two PG57 mics just out of camera, no EQ or any processing of the audio.
Heritage "C" Lead Painted Steeldrum/Pan by Steve Lawrie
Переглядів 9 тис.12 років тому
This is an example of the Painted/Powdercoated Heritage Series pans that I make. The pan is made on a regular size 22.5" barrel. This particular pan is powdercoated, although they are available painted or chromed. The Heritage Series is primarily intended for students and school or college bands, but would also serve a professional player well. The pan was recorded using two Shure PG57 mics on ...
Performance Series 24.5 inch C Tenor Pan
Переглядів 6 тис.12 років тому
This is a chromed Tenor Pan that I made, on a 24.5" custom welded barrel; that's 2 inches bigger than conventional steelpans. The instrument represents my "Performance Series" line of pans. The video shows the instrument being played both solo and with a backing track. For more information please visit my website at www.pantuner.com
Overhauling an old Tenor Pan
Переглядів 5 тис.13 років тому
This is an overview of the steps I took in refurbishing a pan from the 70's that was sent to me by a customer. The video shows a "before" and "after" look at the pan, as well as clips of the work done. The drum needed to be completely rebuilt as there was no mileage in retuning what was already there. The most significant improvement was gained by smoothing and re-shaping the steel between the ...

My grandpa's crew didn't like him, but the FW-190 pilot offered the pilot of the B-17 a beer before they became POW's! Usually this problem is caused by having the inside F (F5) placed directly in front of the rim F (F4). The problem occurs on many notes on many tenor pans. If you go to my website and look at the layout of the Tenor Pan, you'll notice that the inside ring of notes is offset relative to the rim notes - each inner note is in front of the space between two adjacent rim notes, as opposed to direclty in front of the rim not. This addresses the problem you have described.

  • @Britalex
    @Britalex 11 років тому

I have a question. In my new steel pan and others, I find that the inner F always sounds muddy/cloudy. Is this your experience too ?

Chuck, painted pans tend to be slightly drier and less resonant than chromed pans. This is less noticeable on my Performance and Precision Pans since they are made from thicker steel and so relatively speaking the paint is not as parasitic.
