Short v Kasparov 1993 Game 6 (Part 1/2)
My mum watched the whole of this World Championships with me - I was only 10 at the time. She knew her chess, and wished Short would have played the 6. Be2 line with White (because it's more positional and could have worn Kasparov down more than he ended up doing), and then French, QGD or the Lopez with the Black pieces. She said to me he should have tied Kasparov up, not try to 'rip his head off', so to speak. Before this WC, Short had only won 1 of 25 games against Kasparov.
Can't believe I never saw this game before now. Amazing but very risky attack from Short and despite all Kasparov's teams' prep (and his undoubted skill to wiggle-out), there's no way he saw this end game coming 😆😆
Kasparov_Short👑👑🔥🔥❤️❤️
8:27 What about King h6?
I can't play chess very well but I like to watch the legendary Kasparov. Back in the eighties the English thought Nigel short would be world champion but it never happened. But he's still one of the greatest chess players ever. I think he's probably the greatest British player.
Dick head of chess didn't resign.
This was gold chess back then was rare to see on tv ❤
Kasparov had 10 (TEN !) people working for him. No wonder he was so hard to beat ! Nigel should be proud of himself for knocking out Karpov and Timman and he did manage one win in this match.
Terry Waite - what a wonderful human being
Man what commentary and show. Seems like we’ve regressed in that area
This match made me interested in chess and it was to blossom into a lifelong obsession...I am approaching my twilight years now and the concentration is waning but I have enjoyed my 31 year chess journey...
Bit ridiculous that when you're short of time you have to write down the other player's move, eating into your time.
Garry Kasparov comes over as much more modest in the commentary than I remember him being at the time. I think a lot was made of his very dominant presence at the board so and it is difficult to know how much of his reputation was genuine and how much was people projecting onto him a little.
Delicious hearing Keene trumpeting the National Anthem immediately before Short blows the win
So much more interesting without the all-knowing silicon beast.
I'm shocked he didn't play the more forcing Re6+.
Love the backdrop 😊
Brilliant. I remember this well. Thanks for posting.
Me too. Nigel had a habit of running out of time in this championship.
I remember following these games. The Philadelphia Inquirer was publishing the games. I remember Short getting smoked by Kasparov.
Ray Keene (aka 'The Penguin') coming off 2nd best I think in the 'suggest a move' battle with Danny King.
I wish Gotham chess videos had drumming
Mr Snow: How many wickets does Short have now?
I remember this interview. Gold
So can I. Doesn't seem that long ago for some reason.
Why isn't there an engine bar?
Who are commentators?
I remember this back in its time when i was loveing the game my game improved so good just from recording these games at a time when you would never see this great game on tv. Loved it ❤
4d!❤
Be5? Lost a tempo. Then draw.
some parts are missing 🥲🥲
Fascinating to watch this game back now with the advantage of Stockfish which wasn’t around at the time. And to see how wrong the commentators were about Short deciding to castle and a number of his other moves. Did it all right up until he missed Bd4
Even worse they already knew the moves as the match had already finished. They were doing it re-live or fake.
Not so, since Stockfish-level analysis didn't exist, all Short needed to do was to play the moves that out-foxed his opponent.
Outclassed
Was White's e pawn not hanging early in the game? What happens if it's captured
nc6 ne4 12:26
Where he plays Ne5 at 11:57 the correct continuation was 1.Rh1+ Kg6 (1...Kf5 2.Nc6! Bd5 3.Rf1+ Ke6 4.d8=Q Qxd8 5.Nxd8) 2.Ne5+ Qxe5 3.d8=Q Qe3 2.Qd7 h6 3.Qb5 and wins. I made this comment two years ago but needed to edit it.
Of course what with it being 1993, the BBC were obliged to use a 1982 BBC MicroB from 1982 for the graphics.
Are you sure it's a 1982?
Anyone got the full match recorded
I think Re1 was a blunder by Short.
Was the e pawn not hanging for the first few moves?
God i remember being engrossed in this back in the day
This programme made chess seem really exciting for the first time to people who hadn't been particularly interested in it before. It was a terrible shame that they never really carried on with it in the following years. All the interest and momentum was lost.
Francine Stock has such class. Does not try to be the centre of attention.
Good old days …
Dean have you got the whole videos of this World Championship
Did anybody archive this movie?
Its back on youtube..minus the beatles songs...Fair Game 1994
When he said 'Kasparov resigned!' it sent chills down my spine...watched the match live back in 1993...sparked a life long love of the game
Great that this has been documented on UA-cam. A superb attacking game. One gets the feeling that Short was very unlucky not to win. Or was this whole libe in Kasparov's preparation?
Short played very well as he did a number of times in this match. No easy feat beating Kasparov. Bit disappointed that the great man had stalk off from the board straightaway. You would like to think that a player of his calibre would be bigger than that. Kasparov has matured tremendously over the years, but from clips I have seen on Utube he still walks away quickly when he loses?!
Just imagine this sort of stuff was still on tv with people who would understand
Croatian television actually has a chess show with some GM's showing current games and also some games from like 60's and 70's its great
@@user-zb8tq5pr4x sounds good 👍🏻
The most exciting bit of the whole series was when Short scratched an itch on the side of his nose
Srila Prabhupada ki Jay 🙌🙏
Bd4 would probably won, not Be5. Amazing game.
