This programme made chess seem really exciting for the first time to people who hadn't been particularly interested in it before. It was a terrible shame that they never really carried on with it in the following years. All the interest and momentum was lost.
Any club player can see he should have won this game. I think it was the sheer pressure of the media interest in the match that made Nigel lose his nerve. If it wasn't a big TV event he would have not felt such the burden of being scrutinized by the public. History will view Nigel at least as putting up a good fight against Kasparov at times. He was not thrashed. He came second, as Paul merton said at the time.
Yes, but also having less than one minute to make six moves. Nigel had a habit of getting himself into problematic time situations in this championship if I remember correctly.
@@ajs41 yes, I think it was the national coverage that put him under pressure. It should have been held in Los Angeles way away from the public attention
I remember watching these at the time - cringing to watch that one as we thought short would take it; such a pity. But huge inspirational games from short and Kasparov
This match made me interested in chess and it was to blossom into a lifelong obsession...I am approaching my twilight years now and the concentration is waning but I have enjoyed my 31 year chess journey...
Hi Dimmorris fantastic you have those Short,Kasparov games from 1993! Please post more up if you have them,I remember coming home from school and watching chess for the first time in my life! Game 1 of the match was dramatic!
I think the narrators missed Kasparov's option of responding to R-E1 with Q-G4. Short then has to capture the bishop to avoid mate, Kasparov takes the passed pawn. Short then has to move his rook to avoid capture and Kasparov takes Short's knight.
Where he plays Ne5 at 11:57 the correct continuation was 1.Rh1+ Kg6 (1...Kf5 2.Nc6! Bd5 3.Rf1+ Ke6 4.d8=Q Qxd8 5.Nxd8) 2.Ne5+ Qxe5 3.d8=Q Qe3 2.Qd7 h6 3.Qb5 and wins. I made this comment two years ago but needed to edit it.
when the rook comes to e1 and gary kasparov pins the knight with the Queen to G5, the cracking move was Rook to h1, that checks the king and leads to a force pawn queening. that is the move the Nigel missed due to time pressure. Rook to H1
Can't believe after playing so well Short made a monumental fuck up at the end. If he defends with the knight instead of the rook. Kasparov resigns there and then. As the Queen will then be forced to sacrifice itself against a promoted pawn.
Garry Kasparov comes over as much more modest in the commentary than I remember him being at the time. I think a lot was made of his very dominant presence at the board so and it is difficult to know how much of his reputation was genuine and how much was people projecting onto him a little.
Raymond Keene: "Kasparov has had it I'm sure..."! It's a pity that Keene's usage of English is not on the same level as his chess skills. Also, Keene did seem to appear a few times in Private Eye magazine...
Nigel had this game won. Kasparov is so arrogant he still says this match was plane sailing. It wasn't Nigel was under pressure from the media interest.
"Great day for British chess!"... whistling God Save the Queen... I'd bet that the older and more professional Daniel King of today would feel a little embarrassed by this. :)
Thanks a lot dlmmorris. I hope for more kasparov - short videos, they are simply amazing, chess is amazing.
God i remember being engrossed in this back in the day

Brilliant. I remember this well. Thanks for posting.
Me too. Nigel had a habit of running out of time in this championship.
I meant others than the ones you already have posted. Thanks again for these, I remember watching these at the time :)
I cant help but feel sorry for Nigel here , was awesome play from the British champ . Great game to watch.
Just imagine this sort of stuff was still on tv with people who would understand
Croatian television actually has a chess show with some GM's showing current games and also some games from like 60's and 70's its great
@@user-zb8tq5pr4x sounds good 👍🏻
When Chess players study complex variations, sometimes they miss the most obvious and most simple continuations.
Thanks for posting this up :) If love to see others from this match if you can find and post them.
No others?

Any movement on this
Does anybody have Game 16 (C4) when Short beat Kasparov with his Knight move (Nf5+)?
after 12:20 what happens after d8 =q , Qxd8 then white has Nxb3 ?
8:27 What about King h6?
Nigel finds out the hard way that achieving a winning position against Kasparov and winning the game are two very different things.
I think the narrators missed Kasparov's option of responding to R-E1 with Q-G4. Short then has to capture the bishop to avoid mate, Kasparov takes the passed pawn. Short then has to move his rook to avoid capture and Kasparov takes Short's knight.
I wish Gotham chess videos had drumming

good video. any more?

Thnx !

according to an engine that I've just looked at, Kasparov can play Qg4 after Ne1 threatening mate on d1 and, incredibly, black is winning
Bit ridiculous that when you're short of time you have to write down the other player's move, eating into your time.
The commentators didn't do their best work here. Making it seem like Short had the game won. Even saying Kasparov would normally resign here.
If there's no time pressure involved, then a GM resigning would be standard.
I like how Gaza calls a stupid move a "rare continuation" lol !!
Winning line 35.Re1 Qg5 36.Rh1+! Kg6 37. Ne5+ Kf5 38.Nc6 and game over
Correct, i Just suspect the game is fixed cos this sequences of move not so Hard to see considering nigel a super gm
is a way to write to channel 4 and get the whole highlights for all the games?
Yes. Get their address and write . Good luck
Even Kasparov's 39...Qd5?? is a huge blunder. If Short plays 40.Ne4, he wins.
*Nigel fucked up his endgame on a number of occasions*
at 6.06. what happens if knight takes bishop
Kasparov_Short👑👑🔥🔥❤️❤️
brilliant !
short castled long
When in doubt leave it out..... Nigel had him!!!!!
Garry Kasparov comes over as much more modest in the commentary than I remember him being at the time. I think a lot was made of his very dominant presence at the board so and it is difficult to know how much of his reputation was genuine and how much was people projecting onto him a little.
Outclassed
11:35 after blacks move Q g2+. He moves the rook because he was scared of queen to g4.
6.11 what happens if white plays 1 d8=Q - Qg1+ 2 Nf1 - Qxf1+ 3 Kd2
??
That simply loses to Qf2+, followed by checkmate wherever the king goes. e.g. Kd3 Bc2#, or Kc1 Qc2#
JoeCJK and rook Re2 to block the check?
Ian Forbes Re2 is not possible, as there is a knight on e6.
JoeCJK the king on d3 is not mate is it? it's a black square so BC2 isn't even a check
Ian Forbes i mean Ke3 getting d and e mixed up
17:30 gazza? lol
Delicious hearing Keene trumpeting the National Anthem immediately before Short blows the win
Ne1 = Qg4 double attack threaten mate and d7 pawn
4d!❤
nc6 ne4 12:26
Poor Nigel is looking more and more broken with each after-game interview by the evil Voderman
I think Re1 was a blunder by Short.
he hums the national anthem . funny !
How
Even under pressure with media etc
How
poor short
Raymond Keene: "Kasparov has had it I'm sure..."! It's a pity that Keene's usage of English is not on the same level as his chess skills. Also, Keene did seem to appear a few times in Private Eye magazine...
I'm shocked he didn't play the more forcing Re6+.
Nigel had this game won. Kasparov is so arrogant he still says this match was plane sailing. It wasn't Nigel was under pressure from the media interest.
How could a player like Short miss such a simple win? Horrible. I like him as a commentator but did he lost his nerves on this game?
"Great day for British chess!"... whistling God Save the Queen... I'd bet that the older and more professional Daniel King of today would feel a little embarrassed by this. :)
fuck your reptilian queen.
That was GM Raymond Keene whistling that. Danny laughed uncomfortably.
Ne1 was not winning Qg4 threatens Qd1 mate then Qxd...bad commentaries
Srila Prabhupada ki Jay 🙌🙏
8:42 shaddap, you sad man
stupid commentators insisting on rook to e1....lol
name of the hottie?
Yash J Rachel Riley
Nigel Short
LOL nope
Wow. Those terrible colors....if the tech didnt give the 80's away those colors on the board do the trick!
1993 dude
Lol
The most exciting bit of the whole series was when Short scratched an itch on the side of his nose
Thnx !
Thanks you very much !
Chess was Excelent !!!
+Arkadiusz Kozioł and everybody almoust should play ! ...
