43rds Curmudgeon March 2023 Update
A lot of changes at Foxworthy Studios and it's been busy for the Curmudgeons. I'm way behind in creating content for our channel so this is an update on what's been going on and some plans for the next two months photographically. I am finally saying good bye to shooting medium format film and have replaced the 500CM with the Fujifilm GFX50s (mostly for the workflow), plus more M43rds updates. Thanks for watching!

Hassey 500CM V Bronica SQ-B, Take 4

Finally, after what seems to be ages, we wrap up the Hasselblad versus Bronica comparison. Over the past year, we were plagued by gremlins, most of which still remain unexplained to this day. Whether it was inconsistent flash sync (with either the trigger or hard wired), rolls of film with no images (from both cameras), other than one roll that Larry had already captured several frames on befor...

I finally received my back-ordered OM-1 from @Adorama and am quite impressed with this little powerhouse of a camera! I had the chance to shoot a little of an airshow with both my trusty E-M1X and the new OM-1, plus taking it around Charleston to see how it handles some walkabout image making before taking it to Italy and France next month. Now that I have settled on which camera to take, it ma...

Finally getting caught up with projects, (physical injury will give one all sorts of time to get caught up eventually!) this is a video from Fall of 2019, when Bob Penchick from Olympus America came to visit for a photo walkabout. Special thanks to Larry Monteith for putting together a video of the guilty parties! I hope there comes a time when we can put on in-person photo workshops again, too!

We should collect some money to buy you a wire-release 😅 even if it propably wouldn't make much of a difference with these focal length and on a solid tripod. I'm a bit disappointed there really is no summary of the pros and cons of both in this series. There is some words in the studio-part but mostly about the problems with firing the flash. I am currently building a new system around a GS-1 (6x7 at last) after many years with hasselblad and so far don't find more negative or positive things to say about either one. I

It's really refreshing to find someone talking about the problems with using old gear and what you are really up to when you are getting into analogue photography even if you are a well seasoned professionell and know how to handle them. On other channels on YT all seems to be fruits and flowers and no mention of the thorns and weeds of the business. With respect to the flash not firing the synchro-contacts on the CF lenses are known to fail among other things. I used Hasselblad 500 and 2000 (love those) for 15 years and had several visits to the workshop this problem included and in 2012 sold them out of frustration when I ended up with a camera on a wonderful beach and two backs which both failed completely. The SQb otoh may be the most realiable bronica as it has simplified and well refined electronics and was one of the late models. But buying old bronicas can be fun too. My GS-1 keeps me busy right now with strange readings from the AE-prism, probably faulty/dirty contacts, we will see.

I know it's a five year old video but I still have the Em1X and the 12 to 100mm. I do like how the camera feels in my hand and for a camera this age also very decent in terms of features, but i just can stand the image quality these tiny MFT sensor produces, it's pretty bad even 5 year before when compare to those FF back then, so i pretty abandoned this system and never look back. I am just surprised after 5 year they still can't get much better with the latest Om1 MK II, the only difference I saw is they think they are the next LEICA and have the guts to charge us $2700 for the 150 to 600 mm lens. 😀😀😀😀😀

My S2A arrived last week with the Nikkor 75mm f/2.8 standard lens. The test roll came back good so the camera is functional. I have more testing to do. But... This is my first 6x6 medium format camera. I also have a Pentax 645Nii in my inventory that needs some love, but I think I like the square format better. Nonetheless, the experience of working with the Bronica is very, very cool. I love the mechanical nature of the camera and its size requires me to slow down. I've been shooting XP2 because it is easy to get developed locally. But I'll switch over to real black and white film soon. I'm traveling, so my tanks and tools are at home. But I can still send the exposed rolls to a professional developer, retrieve the scans via the Internet, and have the negatives sent home. I can scan myself later. I wanted a Hassy, but the price put it out of reach for me. I think that's OK, though. The Bronica is not really second place. Thanks for the video. The model was a hoot, too. I could tell she was having fun as well as working.

I had always wished that I could find a digital back for the Bronicas, and had even requested a demo unit for the 500cm (which never came). I finally sold them all off and now have the Fujifilm GFX 50s & 100 II, which I am thrilled with especially for traveling. I did request a Hassy X1D II or X2D for demo (from my friend who is head of marketing for Hasselblad no less) but since I never received any word back, went the Fuji route.

Years ago well known photographer and darkroom guru,Ctein, did a comparison test between several popular Hasselblad Zeiss and Bronica PS lenses and the Bronica's were all sharper shot wide open than the Zeiss. Made this SQA/m owner very happy to know. I worked in/managed a couple of camera stores in SoCal for over 27 years. I sold tons of both cameras, as well as Rollei, Mamiya, Pentax, and Yashica medium format cameras, shot with all of them, and ended up with the Bronica because of the system, features and image quality.

I know its a bit big for vlog, but if its lightweight and battery life is good, it might be a winner...especially at the price. Its half of what the others are.

Stan, how does the autofocus continuous compare with the 1dx?

    • @MrSpiff9
      @MrSpiff9 Рік тому

I think that the autofocus in continuous mode compares really well. The main thing to remember is when using any of the AI Tracking Modes like motorsports or bird, is that if there are more than one of that type of subject in frame, the camera doesn't know which one you want to be focused on. Not really any different than when using "Face Detection" when photographing in a crowd, it works great when there is only one subject in frame, not so much when there are many!

I suspect they have been processed differently. You are never going to get that much tonal variation just from the lens. I am a Bronica SQ shooter and used an ETRS professionally 40 years ago. I have also used Hasselblad. When you line up two images shot with the same settings on the same film, there is next to no difference.

I have owned a couple of Hasselblads for over few decades. A 500 CM and a 553 ELX. They are absolutely beautiful cameras , but they are not for everyone. I used to have a Bronica S2 and an ETRS in the early 80s. I sold them in the early 90s, as I was supporting my family then. I doubt very much if you see much difference bewteen a Hass or a Bornica with 6X or 7X enlargement. I also shoot film in all other formats including 4X5. I do use digital a lot. Nikon, Canon and Olympus . To me using film is like cooking a gourmet meal from scratch. A lot of preparation, skill, craft amd art is involved. Digital on the other hand is like buying ready meal from the super market. Put it in the oven , turn the temp up and give it time and it is ready, the post is like making the mess out of the oven look good and presentable. I know which one I prefer. Good video and presentation, and BTW the lady was a stunner.

Not sure what I dislike more about this video. 1-A year after posting it as a Part 1, there is no part 2 2-Even at 2x speed this doesn’t move along quickly enough 3-Stan was miked, but not his cameraman, and they are having conversations but you can only get one side (all of that should have been edited out) 4-Stan is using the gear in very humid conditions, and everything is fogging. I would have either waited that out, or picked another day. The results were likely affected. 5-By his own admission there were technical problems with the Hasselblad. Doesn’t that unfairly affect this comparison? Overall this was poorly planned and executed. As of this writing in August 2022, we still do not know how these compare.

Unfortunately, life sometimes gets in the way of our side projects (which this is one of). Having borrowed the Hassy 503 and found it having more issues, and not finding another one to borrow, I finally found a mint condition 500CM in Japan that we will do part two with, and having Larry run the Bronica SQ-B kit. And yes, he will be mic'd as well this time. As the weather cools and time permits, we will be both in-studio and on location with both kits and should have a part-2 by September. Maybe part-2 will be a little better for your viewing pleasure, and if not, I'm sure there are a whole lot of other channels out there to watch...

At the moment, when Larry Monteith is available, he runs either a one-camera or three camera setup with the Panasonic Lumix GH5's. If I'm doing a quick one or two camera setup, I usually have the E-M1X's rolling. Larry prefers to run Rotolights, and i also have a set of Litepanels if I'm by myself.
