I donated my right kidney in an open nephrectomy via a non-directed (stranger, or altruistic) donation. I wanted to share some of my findings and experience to a broad audience as I found a wide gap in discussion about becoming a living organ donor. A legitimate reason for a cautious dissemination of information is that neither the medical institutions that perform transplants, who cannot appea...

MUCH thanks to you for an honest description of the first few days. It is a major pet peeve of mine when I read or hear a medical professional say “ you will be sore afterwards “ or you should be able to control your pain with OTC products “ I also understand, to a point, why they tend to downplay the pain, but I would rather be prepared than to think of this is going to be no big deal and then BAM! Did you feel that the PCA pump delivered a sufficient dosage to control your severe pain? I have heard some descriptions that made it seem like it was not as effective. I’m glad you seem to be doing very well now. Thanks once again. Stay well all.

I wish I could effectively convey the pain to anyone considering donating because if I read a description I would be worried, but the experience itself is not scary/unbearable. I do think of soreness in that vein - you certainly can't ignore it, but it isn't a pain that makes you worried that something is wrong (despite having an organ removed lol). Like how muscles can certainly be extremely sore and make it uncomfortable to get around, but it isn't like severe gas pain where you sense something is going to explode. It was rather generalized. The pump absolutely helped but even still, I was able to decide to go light on it during the day then crank it to go to sleep more easily. Getting ice chips fed and compression socks (not required medically) offered so much comfort in comparison that they also helped me easily sleep. I hope that detail helps!

Giving the kidney required great effort, months of testing and self motivation to schedule exams and travel to appointments at personal cost. In short, the donation would not have happened without my own desire to help the church friend of my wife and a compulsion to complete this process. Many of the exams were things I should have done anyways, (upper/lower GI, etc.) but many tests, EKG, Renal function, Upper CT, MRI of my liver, skin exam, were covered by the donee's insurance company and resulted in the best medical exams I could never afford on my own. No one is prodding you at the transplant center to have required tests done. Instead, you have many family members telling you that you might shorten your life, (not true, ) you can do this or that later, or, you should not do that at all! etc. I haven't had any negative complications with my remaining kidney, I was back playing baseball yesterday in the 62+ hardball league (8 weeks post surgery) and hit the ball well from both sides. My personal physician did some blood tests just to check hemoglobin levels and thought that my kidney was "struggling" (mid scale on the kidney disease scale,) but the doctor at the transplant hospital said that was to be expected for maybe a year and those readings didn't really apply to a recently donated kidney donor. I made adjustments to my diet, less salt, less sugar, less meat, (all of which I needed to do anyways) They did give her the larger kidney (11cm) vs. 9 which was doing 57% of the work, but I didn't mind because she probably needed a good capacity working organ. When they removed my kidney they did not remove hers. About 30 days post surgery I developed an eye issue (probably not related to the surgery) with poor vision in my right eye NAIOA, (a mini stroke.) Would I do it again? Definitely YES. The feeling of the joy of helping someone off that machine which might not work in a grid down situation, and feeling just a glimpse of the joy Jesus must have felt in making "all things new" in someone's life was probably the most important thing I have ever done in my life, notwithstanding raising 8 children with my wife. ❤

True, if you are pumped with saline, you don't need to drink tons of water if you can't. I used to get very bloated when I was in hospital. Also turning on the tap might help with peeing weirdly. I had a neph tube placed and could not pee but my bladder was full, leaving the tap running while sitting on the toilet helped.

I anonymously donated a kidney in 2017. The process was pretty quick. From first contact to surgery was 3 1/2 months. Passing the psychological was my biggest concern as well. All I know about the recipient was that the surgery was successful. That was all that I cared about. Take care of yourself

Thank you so much for your videos - I just donated my kidney ~2 weeks ago, so your insights have been extremely helpful! When you mentioned that you had reaggravated your incision site during your 2nd month of recovery, did this mean that the wound had reopened, or and/did you experience additional pain? Did you need any additional surgery as a result?

I donated 5 weeks ago. I wish I had watched your video before that. My first three weeks were pretty lousy. That aside, I donated to a friend, and that was a big decision; you donated to a stranger. That is truly incredible - in all honesty, I couldn't do that. Big respect to you. May God bless you for that.

🍁❤️Very well presented and the explanations are exactly what patients and donors would want to hear. You covered all aspects and what to expect. Congratulations for your caring donation of a much needed organ. I have issues with a kidney that has a blocked ureter and will undergo surgery in a couple weeks. I listened attentively to what you said on pain management and recovery. You are an inspiration. Much respect❤

I can definitely relate to your comments about my potential recipient not making a big deal about the whole situation. In his case, he had a match with his sister, but through final stages of testing found out that she had a kidney with issues not found until the cat scan. Head to ride the emotional roller coaster and start his search from square one. He refuses to get excited about the possibility that I will be a candidate, because he doesn't want the let down again. I get it, but it's hard as the donor, to not see some excitement as I pass the tests on my way through the process.

I am on day four of recovery from donating my right kidney in an open surgery in the same way as you. I am experiencing crazy liquid/gas bloating and phantom pain around my naval. I am not taking narcotics (oxy) as the constipation really messes me up so instead I'm using muscle relaxants/nerve blockers. Can I ask you if you experienced bloating and phantom pain across from the incision and if so how long did it last you? Thanks for taking the time to make this video, my friend has been video journaling this whole experience to encourage people to donate altruistically. We plan to put something together once I am through recovery. My experience has been slightly different as I have been living with the recipient for 1 month before surgery, but I didn't know him before that. It just worked out that he was a very friendly guy who has become a friend. He had been living for 3 years with a kidney function of 4 and creatinine of 12. One day after the surgery he had a kidney function of 60 and creatinine of 1. It's pretty crazy how well it has all worked. Thanks again for making the video and helping others see what to expect from this amazing experience.
