Kidney Donation Recovery: First Days in Hospital after Surgery

- I donated my right kidney in an open nephrectomy via a non-directed (stranger, or altruistic) donation. I wanted to share some of my findings and experience to a broad audience as I found a wide gap in discussion about becoming a living organ donor.
A legitimate reason for a cautious dissemination of information is that neither the medical institutions that perform transplants, who cannot appear coercive, nor persons that need a transplant, are in a strong position to advocate for living donation.
Please ask any questions in the comments below.
I'm learning the ropes of video editing so pardon the excessive, often senseless over-editing.

I donated a kidney 9 days ago and just wanted to say that your videos were among the most helpful as I tried to make an informed decision and prepare myself for surgery and recovery. Thank you so much! Based on your video my biggest worry was being able to pee again on my own after they removed the catheter! Fortunately I was able to do so less than 24 hours post-op.
I'm so glad to be helpful and that you didn't have the same distress I did 😅
@@mobanstudio3695 It was quite a relief! On another note, I noticed that my recovery seemed shorter than yours, then saw in one of your comments that you went with open surgery rather than laparoscopic. It would be helpful to make this clear up front; also I'm really curious what led you to make that choice!
Can u please share your experience just after your surgery.I mean how did it feel it that area.
Did u feel any kind of pain or any sensation of pee or something like that.
@@Examprac No, I didn't feel any pain in that area. They removed my catheter the morning after surgery but that was no big deal. I talk about my recovery in detail in this video: ua-cam.com/video/GL8m67vDoqw/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for this, it is the most honest and descriptive explanation i have found. You are so clear. I am considering again after a few years to donate to my sister who is deteriorating after a non live donation some years ago.
I donated a kidney to my friend (non family direct match!) in September 2019. I had one shitty day post op; this was pod1 when the internally placed drugs wore off. I'd say a 6, off n on. Released on pod2. I stayed at that friend's house (local) for one week (his wife n daughters as helpers). Then travelled home, more worried than sore (I had never had surgery). 3 weeks post op I was in Maine fly fishing with my brother. I got tired easily for 2-3 weeks post op. No biggie. I could have been back to work in 7 days if needed (office), but I'm a senior partner (age 61), and can dictate when I work or not. I was told no heavy lifting for 2 months, so I didn't. I'm proud n happy. My friend is super good. 👍🏻😁
what was ur condition 1 month later after donation? pls wait to hear u. coz I'm gonna donate one. I'm scared about surgery. i Don't know what's gonna happen!! but i have to donate. hope to hear u soon
@@tareqislam9463 did u donate your kidney?
Im still in the process of looking for a live donor. I am on the list for a transplant. Ive been dealing with my kidneys for 25 years. I caught covid in 2020 so it took a great toll on my kidneys. Covid have taken many lives and just taken over the world. But i have Faith in God! He has stuck by me these 25 years and im still here. He has the wheel. He's never left me nor forsaken me. He's an awesome God! So praying one day soon i will get my new kidney! 🙏
Wish you the best, as I'm going to donante my Kidney to my younger brother. My blessing to you.
My brother(45) who was on kidney transplant list past away 2 days ago. He was on dialysis for 7 years, as he was O+.. He was on top of the list. Poor guy didn’t even make it to see the day of his transplant. He’s body just couldn’t take it anymore, as toxins were accumulating in his blood. I wish I was healthy enough to give him my kidney, but unfortunately, health issues is the problem. RIP little bro🙏
Thank you to all of the donors. I do not need a transplant yet, but probably will within the next year or so, as my kidney function has been dropping like a rock. I have 2 siblings that have offered to donate one of their kidneys, so I feel very fortunate - but am more concerned about them than I am about myself.
I donated a kidney yesterday, your experience is spot on to mine! *
I just received a kidney from an anonymous/altruistic donor. I think about the donor and wonder how the donor is doing. thank you so much for sharing an honest account of your kidnor donor experience.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm in the process of donating my kidney to my husband. By the grace of God I'm compatible to him. I've done all my requirements and I'm cleared to donate, just waiting on surgery day. I'm excited but nervous. Thank you for your video and for being a donor!
How has it gone - I’m going to donate to my husband soon
I donated to my husband 10 years ago. Oct 2013. One hard thing was having to stay in SLC for 6 weeks. We both wanted to be home.
I haven’t heard anyone talk about hitching ( like after crying for a long time). I had a lot of that because I was low on oxygen. I also had a couple of infusions that really helped me get back on track.
Glad he’s health and with us! I’d do it all again.
I'm in a kidney donation chain so that my sister in law is able to receive a kidney. The surgery is happening in 3 weeks. It's taken us 2 years to get to this point. I'm becoming a little more anxious about the surgery, so your video really helps me to understand more of what to expect!
I'm so glad it helps! I've got other interviews from other donors up. You'll do great! Nearly 3 years out, I feel great, most of the time forget I'm missing a kidney, and life is back to normal. Except! When I'm having a bad day, I can wonder if my kidney is having a good one. You'll hear so many incredible stories after you donate.
@@mobanstudio3695 :). Thank you so much!
I’m going through the testing process for an ex boyfriend (we dated 20+years ago). We remained friends. I am very nervous but I want to help. Wish me luck!
I’m going through the testing process myself right now
I’m so happy to hear this from a donor’s perspective! I’m donating my kidney through the Paired Exchange Program since I wasn’t a match for my older brother. He just received his new kidney today from an anonymous donor, and in return I will be donating mine next week to a different recipient. I truly appreciate you sharing your experience and insights with us. This video is so valuable and thank you so much for making it. You’re my SHE-RO!!!
Hey Antino, hope you're recuperating well after surgery!!! Thinking of you
@@mobanstudio3695 Thank you so much! It went well thankfully. I’m in my second week of recovery and improving quickly. Your videos were very helpful in helping me mentally prepare for the surgery. One of the coolest things I’ve done in my life. My brother and his donor are doing well, and I was very happy to hear my recipient is doing super well. I cried not from the pain, but from happiness I got to help my brother and an anonymous recipient thru the Paired Exchange Program. Anyhoo, thank you for your thoughts and sharing us your detailed experience. It helped allay any anxiety/fears I had about the surgery. One Bean Human Being Unite! Lol.
@@antinoprak7999 I wish I could properly convey how grateful I felt for the experience. It sounds cheesy but it is true. So glad the videos helped! :)
Thank you for making this video. My husband is donating his kidney next week (non-directed donation) and all this information is so helpful!
Awesome. I'm on the waiting list I put my information out there for me a live donor. Praying for one soon. God bless
I’m scheduled for donation surgery in 9 days into the national exchange so my wife can receive a kidney eventually. My transplant team has been wonderful, informative and supportive. Your video (and I’ll watch the next one soon!) was exactly what I needed to hear as far as expectations right after surgery. Thank you for putting your experience out there for all of us!
Thank you for posting this, not much like this available!
Donating in a month. Your video was a GREAT educational tool!! Thank you so much!
This is extremely helpful and specific information and nothing you’ve said is trivial. What a hugely kind person you are and oh that there were more like you. God bless you for sharing your story.
You are a star!
Im thankful as Im donating a kidney in December and nice to hear a true experience
I will be donating a kidney tomorrow morning.
@@yvonnekoval5713 best wishes🙏
Thanks for making this video. I hope to donate this summer and was involved with my sisters donation earlier this year. I agree with you as much as we understand how and why generic information ends up on websites and brochures, there’s nothing like first-hand reports.
I am pretty sure I’ll be the donor for my dad. Your video is so incredibly helpful
I am donating on May 4 to my partner, as we are deemed a match. Thanks for your video, I hope maybe to try to encourage others to donate. It gives life to another person, what better gift could you give of yourself....than to give 20 years of an almost normal life to someone. I pray that our surgeries are succesful, and I look forward to hiking the Camino de Santiago in Spain in the fall....time will tell.
How long is the process to get approve to donate
I know this is very late, but it took me from June start of application to early October donation!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I'm contemplating donating my kidney to my brother, there's a little bit of a problem, he lives in Colombia and I live in Canada so I hope that I can sort things out
I donated 5 weeks ago. I wish I had watched your video before that. My first three weeks were pretty lousy. That aside, I donated to a friend, and that was a big decision; you donated to a stranger. That is truly incredible - in all honesty, I couldn't do that. Big respect to you. May God bless you for that.
I am in the very beginning process of seeing if I am a match to donate a kidney to a friend. I tend to handle things well based on the amount of information I have. This is definitely one of the more helpful videos I have seen thank you
Thank you so much for doing this! I am also hoping to be an altruistic donor. This is really helpful & comprehensive information and for sure helped me feel more informed about what the actual experience of recovery will be like. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Hi Miriam - were you able to donate? How are you doing?
Excellent and very educational. Thank you.
Thank you for your enormous generosity!
What a great summary of your experiences. Well done
What a wonderful thing you did❤️
I am hoping to do a kidney swap ... mainly to so my sister gets a kidney from a donor with the same blood type. Your video is so helpful. I teared up at the section where you talked about wondering if your kidney was doing well for the recipient. I was happy to hear it all went well! Thank you for sharing!
Best of luck! to both of you!!
Thank you for the info, good to know. I'm at the very beginning of the getting tested process so its nice to see what to expect.!
I have seen your videos just days before the operation for me and my brother and that was very helpful, now I feel great and I would like to thank you again.
I just want to say what a great person you are. I'm in the process of test and examinations, I am a direct match for my sister in law who is on dylises for the past 3 years. All my bloods and test are back and we are nearly good to go 🤞🏻🤞🏻. So thanks for making this video your an inspiration I taught I was tough 😉. I hope both yourself and recipient and in brilliant form. Thanks again take care. Anthony in Ireland 🇮🇪
Thank you so much for this video, i recently donated a kidney. This video put me at so much ease right before my surgery ❤
Much appreciated information.

Thank you for your video it helped a lot
Thank you for the frank and well informed discussion on this topic. I just filled out the initial application to donate so am reading and watching all of the resources I can find.
Glad to help! Good luck to you and your recipient!
Thank you so much.
🍁❤️Very well presented and the explanations are exactly what patients and donors would want to hear. You covered all aspects and what to expect. Congratulations for your caring donation of a much needed organ. I have issues with a kidney that has a blocked ureter and will undergo surgery in a couple weeks. I listened attentively to what you said on pain management and recovery. You are an inspiration. Much respect❤
I’m considering donating my kidney to a friends mother and I’m just trying to make sure I have all of the necessary facts. This video was definitely helpful!
My husband needs a transplant and I just started the process to find out if I am a match. Thank you for sharing.

Have ANCA vasculitis and am arguing with my family about whether or not I'd accept one if the symptoms come back. I don't want to up end someone's life for more time but I am becoming more willing to listen to what they want.
True, if you are pumped with saline, you don't need to drink tons of water if you can't. I used to get very bloated when I was in hospital. Also turning on the tap might help with peeing weirdly. I had a neph tube placed and could not pee but my bladder was full, leaving the tap running while sitting on the toilet helped.
Thank you for sharing your amazing experience and insights. I am moved by your experience and the experiences of other who have shared. One question is was a central line installed as part of the surgery/post-surgery recovery?
I have an appointment on Thursday with a surgeon and hope to schedule my survey date! I am also doing an anonymous donation! ❤️
Hope you're doing well!
Thanks I’m getting a transplant next week and I am nervous 😢
Great information. My daughter wants to donate to me. I’m looking for information for her. To put my mind at ease.
You may like the two videos I just uploaded! All about going through the application process for a donor. Good luck!
I really appreciate your candor and professionalism. I’m donating in 20 days and wanted a first-hand account of how it really felt. I’m not afraid, per se, but found your descriptions very helpful in telling my husband how much he might need to assist me to just move around the first few days. Did the breathing thing cause you to have anxiety or were you too sleepy to feel panicky over it? I’m hoping the mix of drugs and exhaustion will send my anxiety into nap mode. Thanks again for being brave in front of the camera for us!
I'm so glad it helped! The breathing apparatus, a spirometer, didn't cause me anxiety at all thankfully. It was just a matter of my side feeling like it had a permanent stitch, so a deliberate deep breath (what the apparatus makes you do) just stretches all that tender stuff back out and aches a bit. Like stretching your hamstrings after a tough day of weightlifting. I'm prone to anxiety also, but after getting through the early bathroom stuff in the hospital I really wasn't scared at all. I hope you have a great experience and that your husband knows he's a "hero" too!
How did it go?
I'm 2 months out and feel like a human. Time passes and you forget the discomforts of surgery. First week was really hard. I'm definitely not pushing my body to do anything it's not up for. Resting. Eating. Drinking. There are tons of little pains/sensations here and there that could drive a person crazy. I ignore them as much as possible. Recipient is great and I am well enough to do all daily work and chores. Life is good!
respect
This video is a bit old, so I hope it finds you well. I would like to first say how proud I am of you and how much I respect you for doing what you did for a stranger. I have recently signed up to be a living donor and I just have to find a place to do the testing. I live in a small town in Alabama and I might have to travel a bit to find a place to do the testing. But I watched a video about a little girl going through hell and all she needed was a new kidney. I think both were bad. (Do they remove both of hers and put only the one new one in?) But I have a small child and I'm not a young man anymore. I'm 47. Then I saw how older kidneys are less likely to develop problems because they would have already become apparent. I don't know if I get to aim my kidney at any target. I would like it to go to a child and not some older person that messed there's up with drugs or poor health habits. I was very curious about the pain, and thank you so much. You broke it down perfectly and I feel like if I'm ever selected I know what to expect. Your video perfectly answered my question. My only obstacle right now is finding a place near me to do the testing...it seems there is nothing near me but maybe I'm misunderstanding how to find a place. I just wanted to write this to thank you for not only your incredible sacrifice, but for giving information to other people that want to do the same thing. I think I can handle the inconvenience it will cause me if it helps another person live. My name is Richard and you have my permission to message me or whatever if you think it would help. Thank you so much for this video!!! If I end up able to do it I hope I can remember you and tell you about my story. Love and prayers!!!
It's so heartwarming to hear these videos are useful for people! I'd check the National Kidney Registry site for transplant centers near you. I had to travel a bit too, but it worked out :) BEST OF LUCK
Im on my 18th yr.of donation 🎁 all is well still for me (Went in fri out by Monday)
Hi! I just donated a kidney at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago. Good information here. I’d like to add it’s helpful to have lozenges on hand since you will be intubated for surgery and it may make your throat tickling. Believe me, you do not want to be coughing with a healing abdomen.
I did the same as you, I’m staying in a hotel across the street from the hospital for a few extra days just in case I have any complications. It feels like I got kicked in the stomach by a mule. 😂 it’s helpful to have a few portable urinals on hand for the first few days since it will be very difficult to make it to the bathroom when it’s a struggle to get out of bed. I spent one night in the hospital and was discharged the day after surgery.
I actually worked as a student researcher at the Feinburg School of Medicine there while in college! Our building was the top floor above the Burberry store on Michigan Avenue. Maybe get yourself a cake shake from Portillos to hold you over :) Agreed on lozenges and the coughing - I'll add not to watch anything too comedic or invite your funniest friends over because laughing hurts just as much. Unfortunately with my anatomy there weren't too many options for peeing while laying down, but they want you up and walking anyway. Hope you're on the up and up by now!!
I am on day four of recovery from donating my right kidney in an open surgery in the same way as you. I am experiencing crazy liquid/gas bloating and phantom pain around my naval. I am not taking narcotics (oxy) as the constipation really messes me up so instead I'm using muscle relaxants/nerve blockers.
Can I ask you if you experienced bloating and phantom pain across from the incision and if so how long did it last you?
Thanks for taking the time to make this video, my friend has been video journaling this whole experience to encourage people to donate altruistically. We plan to put something together once I am through recovery.
My experience has been slightly different as I have been living with the recipient for 1 month before surgery, but I didn't know him before that. It just worked out that he was a very friendly guy who has become a friend.
He had been living for 3 years with a kidney function of 4 and creatinine of 12. One day after the surgery he had a kidney function of 60 and creatinine of 1. It's pretty crazy how well it has all worked.
Thanks again for making the video and helping others see what to expect from this amazing experience.
MUCH thanks to you for an honest description of the first few days. It is a major pet peeve of mine when I read or hear a medical professional say “ you will be sore afterwards “ or you should be able to control your pain with OTC products “ I also understand, to a point, why they tend to downplay the pain, but I would rather be prepared than to think of this is going to be no big deal and then BAM! Did you feel that the PCA pump delivered a sufficient dosage to control your severe pain? I have heard some descriptions that made it seem like it was not as effective. I’m glad you seem to be doing very well now. Thanks once again. Stay well all.
I wish I could effectively convey the pain to anyone considering donating because if I read a description I would be worried, but the experience itself is not scary/unbearable. I do think of soreness in that vein - you certainly can't ignore it, but it isn't a pain that makes you worried that something is wrong (despite having an organ removed lol). Like how muscles can certainly be extremely sore and make it uncomfortable to get around, but it isn't like severe gas pain where you sense something is going to explode. It was rather generalized. The pump absolutely helped but even still, I was able to decide to go light on it during the day then crank it to go to sleep more easily. Getting ice chips fed and compression socks (not required medically) offered so much comfort in comparison that they also helped me easily sleep. I hope that detail helps!
My sister gave me a kidney in June and I wish I had found these videos earlier
You video is so insightful.I have just been approved to donate but was warned about my blood pressure and most likely having to go on medication soon after surgery.Have you had any issues with blood pressure at all?
I'm going through the process of donating my kidney to my husband, I love him and want him to live longer, but I can't avoid being nervous...I'm so scared of needles...😢
i have a lot of respect for living order donors.
I am looking into bone marrow donation and maybe kidney donation.
Thank you for posting this.
I have low blood pressure so I am not sure if I could donate a kidney.
I’m so grateful for this. There is indeed a gap in information. A gap in hearing from actual donors.
I’m considering donating to an acquaintance on Facebook. My province (Ontario Canada) has a trade program… if I’m not a match to her my kidney can go to a match and she will then be eligible to receive a similar match.
Paired Exchange Program
It's always so great to read that this video continues to help donors make informed decisions - that's exactly what I was going for! And remember, you can make the decision to pursue evaluation, but there are many steps between then and approval in which the transplant team will provide even more information!
Thank you very much for your donation and for the info! I have just started the donation process. What was the scheduling of your surgery like? Were you able to control how far in advance the surgery was scheduled?
Anybody here knows if hair loss after a kidney donation is normal? :( It’s been 3 months since the surgery and I haven’t found any info from the donor perspective.
Lately i’ve been having some hair loss and I don’t know if its due to that or if it’s because of something else, any info would be very helpful 😢
P.S. I never had any contact with other donors before so hearing your story and reading other donors comments gave me a lot of peace of mind. It’s great to see that we’re not alone in this, I’ll be checking your updates frequently!
I've never heard of hair loss being associated with kidney donation, but absolutely talk to your team about it. Very glad my videos were useful to you!
i am going to donate my Kidney within 1 week
Thank you for the useful information! I will begin the workup soon to donate to my Sister in Law. I noticed in the description that they did an open approach, do you know why they were not able to do it laproscopically?
They assessed both kidneys and then left it up to my choice! I could have my left taken in a laporoscopic or my right in an open surgery. Between thinking the scar was cooler and being freaked out by the CO2 gas thing of laporoscopic surgeries, I picked right/open surgery.
Thanks for making this video! I am hoping to donate my kidney to someone this upcoming year (whenever things reopen after Coronavirus). I'm looking for more info on the recovery process and your video was among the best I've seen with several great tips. Was there anything you wish you had done differently?
Glad it helped! Really trying to fill a gap in information. I do have a follow up to this one if you didn't see it ua-cam.com/video/l2b3nUUNe2g/v-deo.html. That's a great question, really the one thing I'd change about recovery was the drive home. We thought it'd be better to take a few scheduled breaks (long lunch, a wetlands sanctuary). Instead, it was all the more time I couldn't really stretch out and relax my muscles fully. Would have been easier to drive in just a straight shot!
The largest "mistake" overall was that when I first realized I wanted to donate a kidney, I reached out to the friend whose facebook post I saw with the full intention of donating to her family member. As I learned more about the process and the extreme need for kidneys, I really felt uncomfortable choosing who got my kidney. While I'm very sure my decision to go non-directed was the right one for me (and went to a child that had already served several years on dialysis where the family member was older and had not yet started), I would have done more research on my own before reaching out to that person whatsoever. Hope that helps!
@@mobanstudio3695 Yes, thanks so much! How did you pick which transplant center to donate through. There are at least 4 in close-ish proximity to me.
I haven't seen the other video. Thanks! I'll definitely watch it.
@@BenjaminLammers27 I looked at the NKF list and had two centers to choose from, each about 4 hours away. I knew about Cleveland Clinic's stellar reputation from some biomedical research work I did in undergrad and more current research confirmed as much! I really could have stayed in state in retrospect since I didn't end up going through NKF, but I enjoyed getting to know a new town and my surgical team so no regrets there :)
Thank you for the info. Did you have to have the drains post surgery ?
No drains! Just a clear film bandage over the incision, was not very gruesome at all.
I had the same issue with post catheter urination and had to be re catheterized for a couple more days. A bit unpleasant, but not horrible.
I’m considering donation for a family member. I’m very nervous mostly because I don’t have a spouse or family in the province I live, plus I have two dogs. So I have no one to help me with recovery. Would I be able to walk my dogs a few days after surgery? Also, do you think I’d feel comfortable working at a desk from home a few days after? I really appreciate your honest feedback. Thank you 🙏
My baby brother wants to get tested, but I haven't been placed on a list yet.
Thank you for this video. I am in the process of being tested and considered for a kidney donor and have an appointment with the University of Alabama Kidney Transplant Center on April 18th. At the end of your video, you mentioned being shuttled to a hotel for a few days stay before returning to your hometown. Were you able to have the donation surgery and then drive yourself home without the assistance of a friend or loved one?. I am not concerned about donating a kidney but am concerned about my wife navigating to and from a hotel in the city of Birmingham. She depends heavily on my doing all of the driving whenever we travel. Sorry for the silly question but it is often the simple things that cause the greatest concerns.
I should have elaborated in the video, but I was not permitted to drive for 3 weeks (though I know some donors are on restriction for just 2). This is independent of how long you take opioid-based pain medication. The 15 minute slow-speed shuttle was fairly uncomfortable 3 days after surgery and the 5 hr car ride (would usually be 3hr) 6 days after surgery was extremely exhausting. If your trip is 45 minutes, I'd plan on Ubering no earlier than the 4th day post-surgery, if it's 2 hrs, maybe the 5th and longer than that 6th is the earliest. The limiting factor for me was soreness with core stability, even reclined. Hope that helps you plan the logistics and of course GOOD LUCK!!
Did they have to go through your naval and if so is there any residual pain or numbness in that area?
Am from Kenya ready to donate O+ is my blood group young and healthy
I want to donate but on condition
I am currently in the process of being evaluated for living kidney donation. I’ve completed all the testing and am waiting for the final “go ahead” before the surgery is actually scheduled. A concern I have, which you didn’t address, is nausea/vomiting after surgery. Anesthesia tends to make me sick to my stomach, which is challenging when your core muscles are compromised. Did you experience this during your immediate recovery period?
I didn't get terribly nauseated, nor did I vomit at all. I certainly would not have wanted to given even yawning was painful! I'd mention your concerns to your team.
How much blood do they take at the full day of testing? That’s what scares me the most.
Ask for Zofran and you won’t get nauseated after anesthesia. It’s a Godsend!! You can also ask you Dr to prescribe Emend to take the night before to prevent nausea.
I’m in the process of donating a kidney to a family member on dialysis. I passed the initial tests and have the full day of testing this week. I’m phobic of being stabbed with needles and IVs, how much blood do they take from you at the full day testing and in the hospital? Surgery doesn’t scare me at all, I’ve had 32 since 1977. Frequent blood tests, terrify me. Help!!
I'm so sorry you've got a phobia/anxiety! I kept count, in total, Cleveland Clinic took 72 vials up until the moment of surgery, but only via 4 needle pokes. That may sound like a lot, but it's less volume in total than a single draw for (blood) donation! An additional poke came from the CT and of course another just prior to surgery for IV. If they give you a nerve block that may be additional. That all may sound scary, but your intentions can be stronger than the fear! I tried to turn any fear into curiosity, the evaluation process really is so interesting. That said, know that the vaso-vagal reflex is something so hard to control that novice medical students undergo dedicated therapy with mixed results in order to overcome it. If you are sincerely sick with worry, it is 100% okay to decide this isn't the right decision for you. The vaso-vagal reflex, as well as health anxiety, are both medical circumstances you may not be able to control, just as family history or an anatomical defect may be disqualifying! You can help in many other ways (the most intensive of which is likely being the primary caregiver for a donor imo).
How much time were you off work?
I just got approved for the paired kidney exchange. How long did you have to wait between approval and donation?
I actually made a couple videos talking about this! I was approved in August and donated in October. I began the process in late June and moved pretty much as quick as possible :)
How did you feel when they were putting you in anesthisia and during recovery
I was cool as a cucumber through surgery preparation (getting robed and hooked up to IVs and all that) UNTIL it came time for a nerve block and my family was asked to leave which happened at about the same time. The process for the nerve block was pretty scary and unexpected as well until that morning, so I started crying a bit, they asked if I wanted some anti-anxiety stuff to which I said yes and all was gravy after that :) I remember being wheeled up to the OR and chit chatting with the surgeon (who I'd met before and really liked) as well as politely interviewing the anesthesiologist before and as he put me under.
Hello is it posible do you know to give kidney if i had an cardio operation byPass...but have good kidney never have any problem.my age is 43...itd urgent for answer.how to check that
My brother is the only one who could donate but he isn't willing to 😓
Seriously I want to donate mine whom should I contact pliz help me
Wow! One abuses their own body, then looks to some one else to fix it???!! The only One responsible for their health is me, myself and I.
I'm assuming that my upcoming kidney removal will be about the same although mine has to come out, It will be done I'm told using robotics, not sure that makes a difference, But also curious how if at all your diet has changed thanks for posting.. Also im on F.B i really kinda nervous about this with so many questions my surgeon kinda just says it will be fine.. I'm married with children and have cancer in my left kidney so any info is very helpfull thank you
Fortunately my diet has not changed at all - unless you consume enough ibuprofen that it'd count as part of your diet your diet shouldn't have to change much after surgery. I have heard a couple people say the transplant team wanted them to get to a healthier BMI before surgery. They do remind you to do what you can to avoid diabetes and stay hydrated (which includes minding any diuretic consumption such as very salty foods).
I empathize with feeling as though the medical team stays vague. I'm sure for some people, it's helpful to NOT hear a laundry list of all possible complications, a detailed description of the exact surgery process, exact risk %s, but for some of us it gives us peace of mind to gain some familiarity of WHY a surgery like this is so likely to be fine. I really empathize for you since this surgery was ultimately elective for me. If it helps, over the past 50 years the total mortality for kidney donation is comparable to giving birth. I hope that gives you a bit of confidence and I'm so sorry you're in this position.
@mobanstudio3695 Thank you much appreciate it i will be glad when this is over and done! 😁
