    Soooooo many interesting innovations and applications come from the crazy unusual biology of cetaceans (whales / dolphins). Neurologically (proportional extremely long neurons; also get plaques similar to alzheimers); physiologic adaptations for surviving extreme depths, adaptations for extreme sizes( large whales) which on genetic level have safeguards for over aggressive cell growth applicable to cancer research; behaviorally socially complex. so much more

    I’m just one person, obviously, but I have made a commitment to exercise my limited economic power much more judiciously across the board. So, buying direct from retailers when possible. Researching what those retailers are doing and who they are supporting - America or oligarchy. Still spending but more thoughtfully. Tired of supporting the worst and richest among us. Life might be less convenient and cheap, but it is something I can do. And in buying less but better, it all equals out. I’m really tired of these people showing no fidelity to Americans who have made them so disgustingly rich at the expense of the rest of us. Throwing their millions around when so many are struggling. It’s arrogant to a sociopathic degree, to be honest. Again, I’m just one person, but I have a choice, so I’m going to use it while I can. So far, it feels really good to be a little more defiant with my wallet. Thank you for your work to put democracy into practice, Lina.

    Can the government stop it? She says yes. I think statistically the fines were never enough even had you been able to do more of them across the board. You would want to stop it first and then go from there. Then some small monopolies could work with balances perhaps. But yeah it got out of control fast, whatever you guys want to call it. Probably needs a new definition? Not late stage capitalism and it’s not quite an oligarchy but that is closer.

    • @writerchick94
      @writerchick94 19 годин тому

      can you name a "small monopoly"?

    • @Roguerebel297
      @Roguerebel297 19 годин тому

      @@writerchick94 I don’t know any. But I’m just assuming monopolies are inevitable at this point and that if they had to be here it would have been nice with checks and balances.

    • @writerchick94
      @writerchick94 19 годин тому

      @Roguerebel297 the point is they are not inevitable and there is no way to have checks and balances when monopolies exist. Not allowing them IS the check and balance. There is no such thing as a small monopoly because a monopoly by definition means they've taken control of the entire market for a product or service. There is no small version of that.

    • @writerchick94
      @writerchick94 16 годин тому

      @Roguerebel297 I'm not saying they don't have power. They do and that's the problem. What I am saying is that 1) they are not inevitable and 2) there is no such thing as a small monopoly

    • @Roguerebel297
      @Roguerebel297 16 годин тому

      @@writerchick94 I just think with how hard the FTC had to fight to get the wins it feels pretty inevitable like they just find a loophole regardless of any ‘repercussions’ they face. Also if they gained this much control when we had Lina I don’t want to think about when she won’t be here..

    I don't really think this movie is about the internet, or cancel culture at all. I watched it (and largely remember it) as a story about narcissistic self-destruction. Now that this video reminds me, yes the viral video aspect was cringey and stupid, but it was such a minor part of the story it's not what I think the movie was really about.

    45:50 Yeah, I do this all the time; I call them NPR Names. The 'Brought to you by...' indviual donors name's on PBS broadcasts are a deep well of fantastic names that you'd otherwise think were made up. One of my favorite was 'Seaton Melvin', sadly I believe he(?) they have since passed away because I no longer hear his name during the particular part of the broadcast; I mean come on, with a name like that and a donor at the 'get a shout-out by Judy Woodruff on every show' level, you know this person can't be any younger than 75.

    • @avedic
      @avedic 3 дні тому

      Huh? I mean, sure, I suppose. :P But that would mean they could only ever talk about the most obvious broadly seen movies. If anything, I suspect the majority of people who are fans of this podcast _have_ seen Tar. I would venture to guess that venn diagram is veering on being a single circle. I certainly get not being into an episode if you haven't seen the film yourself. But Tar, while somewhat niche, isn't _that_ obscure. But I do suggest watching it! I definitely wouldn't say I loved it. But I did like it. And on a visual/aesthetic level it was pretty stunning...which for me was enough to justify it. I felt it shared a very specific visual language with Aronofsky's Black Swan. There's a stark brutalist minimalism vibe....but with a thread of psychological chaotic unwinding woven throughout....all rendered in this very visually captivating way.

    The gaming community is the last of any commnity to ever posses a conservative message. The thing is that those men who are conservative but also like video games just ignore the idiotic takes of left leaning gaming content creators. Because we dont label people as Nazis or all the phobics and the isms if we dont like your politics. So to say that right wing radicalization is found in gaming is a stupid and pathetic take.
