Good stuff, Vlad! Well explained, straight to the point. Adding text and images when possible always helps improve the quality of the presentation. It becomes more of an educational show than a audio-only podcast when you add relevant text, images or videos. I'm sure that can be more challenging, but it does help the presentation quality overall. I hope you get more views and subscribers. Maybe an interview with another fairly popular anti-cap, progressive channel on YT would help? Moreover, educating and organizing for the public is still really important. I was inspired when I just found out there is a People's Platform in Europe being organized for February in Vienna. Take a look. It would be really something if that could happen for North America. Because we have SO MANY good organizations and people that are speaking the same sort of vision but we are just a little disconnected and we need to get on the same page. One conference could do just that.

I did some interviews on my channel. I have also reached out to means.tv/ but they have not replied. For now, I'd like to focus on essays rather than interviews. There's already a lot of people doing interviews. My aim is to clarify complicated concepts, talk straight, and be as practical as I can. Conferences also have their limitations: they do not engage regular citizens and tend to be captured by jargon. For that reason I wrote this proposal degrowth.info/en/blog/degrowthers-of-the-world-unite-a-proposal-for-degrowth-academics-activists-practitioners-to-join-forces-as-equals which has sparked some engagement. There is a group at degrowth.net/ that wants to turn the proposal into reality.

the simple fact is that capitalism rewards the worst evil humans can do, and as Vlad points out, those who want greater access to capital, power and property are willing to do evil to get them...I believe if the necessisites of life were provided so that each human can live their own best life, we'd pretty much see a lot less of evil behaviour.

All these issues are ultimately emergent properties of the individual. A society is a collective of individuals and nothing more. It is those individuals characteristics that combine in a multitude of ways and are extremely complex that then manifest in all we have and then it becomes an immensely complex feedback system which starts to shape each individual. You could say that the complex social structures we have today were generate 100's and 1000's of years ago by those individual human characteristics that were emerging. Obviously some are innate but what we have today is essentially the emergence of the essence of psychopathy which is now becoming embedded in the human species. Without constructing a system that works for everyone equally(as a society everyone is suppose to be equal so if you create a society in which some have power over others you actually do not have a society) and is designed to prevent and reduce the psychopathic tendencies then the psychopath will corrupt and take over the system and undermine it and the individuals in it will exist in chaos until it collapses in on itself and turns into something else(almost always worse). Rules of systems produce behaviors and outcomes. The rules of "capitalism" have produced what we have. It is not complex. There are millions of board and card games. Each game has it's own unique set of rules. Each set of rules gives defines what the "game" is and gives rise to usually an infinite number of games. The rules of Capitalism are essentially the most basic and next to the rules of slavery and survival of the greediest. Until we create a system with very clear rules about everything and make sure it produces the game we want to exist in we will be plagued playing these insane games in which some will cheat themselves to win.

The situation of parties and unions is the situation of any strongly centralized structure. Robert Michels wrote a book in 1911, "Political Parties", in which he analyzed how any centralized structure turns into a mafia and called this tendency "the iron law of oligarchy". For their decentralization, the organizational law should specify that decisions must be taken with the approval of the majority of members, their management only having the role of coming up with proposals to solve various problems. The bad part is that the corrupt parties transfer this corruption to the state administration and therefore the whole state will become corrupt

I would gladly accept ANY of these 19 alternatives over the system we live within. But I'm curious why you didn't mention a resource based economy, as developed by Jaques Fresco and later built on by Peter Joseph... That happens to be my current favorite, though I believe it's very similar to many of these

Very good presentation. Lots of good information. Wow, there are so many books about degrowth these days, it shows how obvious and important it is to move to a post-capitalist, degrowth, solidarity type economy sooner rather than later. I truly believe we have academic, working class and some upper class support but our voice is muted by the rapacious oligarchs who own the mainstream media, politicians and major corporations. We have to improve our communication, organization, activation and collaboration. That's what I hope to do. I'd love to talk more, because your list of strategies I think are good, but I see some challenges with them, because many of them ask for petitioning government to do things that we can't really control, especially if we have small numbers. Also, many municipalities are broke. Mine is. I know from someone on the inside that they have no money to fund things, they could give out some free or cheap properties, but they can't fund a Repair Shop. And to ask them to tax businesses that use plastic would cause more uproar than is helpful without an alternative. Demanding tax on plastics and planned obsolescence is still a good goal, but the community needs a strong mutual aid network and NFP worker co-operative established to give the people a viable alternative instead of just banning their current practice and asking them to find an alternative. I think with a few tweaks in direction there could be a simple platform that could help any community get on the right path towards Degrowth. I'd love to talk more about this. Thanks for all the work you've put into this, clearly lots has gone into it, and that is appreciated. I'm still going through a lot of it.

Very good to see your channel, Vlad! Just found you and great to hear what you are saying about this important topic. Beyond capitalism and "the solution to capitalist crisis is through degrowth" is so true and that's part of my journey and local educational activism to build that knowledge base in my community, in Canada (MB). You are the creator of Degrowth Collective? That is amazing. Do you have any conferences? You are probably aware of the Degrowth Conference in Europe in 2023 with speakers like Jason Hickel and Kate Raworth? Maybe something like that could be done in Ottawa for Canadians and also answers to those questions you proposed could be addressed both by degrowth scholars, authors and ambassadors of citizen assemblies. I'm going to back through your other videos I haven't seen yet, but I hope to see more and talk more.

As a addition to my previous comment, out of curiosity I went to Wikipedia and from 2021 data Canada used 555.000 GWh/year at a population of 38 million while Romania used 51.000 Gwh/year at a population of 19 million, that's almost 10 times the amount of energy used with a population double of Romania. What is all that energy used on?

See here some stats www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/231120/dq231120c-eng.htm# Many energy sectors use a lot of energy. Household consumption is also much higher in Canada than elsewhere because houses are much bigger, badly insulated, folks waste a lot of energy on needless consumption etc.

We in romania, currently have a minority, maybe, I hope that it isn't larger, that have voted for AUR and Sosoaca, they are a neo-legionarism fascist movement in the country and their current line of attack is that the EU wants us to eat bugs and shower in groups for environmental protection. When you say degrowth they will go, see I told you "they" want to cull the population. I don't see how degrowth could become popular,I even had debates that we shouldn't build more highways with people and we should instead focus on trains, and they look at me like I'm insane.

"There are MANY ALTERNATIVES to capitalism, and they are not USSR and North Korea!" This video makes for an interesting thought experiment, but it lacks any intention of material application. Since nowadays the idea that's being pushed is that humanity has already surpassed class division, Vlad did well in pointing out the existing hierarchies. However, what this video does is only describe several paths that could be followed (and while some of these "ideologies" are socialist, many others listed are just as compatible with the capitalist superstructure), therefore it falls flat since Vlad has no idea what it takes to put these ideas into practise, and what to do to prevent throwbacks. So by immediately discarding the past/present socialist experiments, which is really just a product of propaganda in a capitalist-dominated culture, Vlad becomes blind on why these experiments took their respective forms and specific ideologies, as well as blind towards any actual revolutionary activity. What you all must understand is that the only power in human society potentially stronger than capital (not enterily accurate by I could call it the organization of the capitalist class), is the organization of the working class. It's not any state, not any media, not even any military, all of those are simply tools at the service of the current ruling class (capitalist class). And just as they are the tools used to keep the working class disorganized, once it actually becomes organized, those tools must also be used to keep the new ruling class in power for as long as the class conflict remains. This is what the USSR was, this is what North Korea, China, Cuba are: physical manifestations of a ruling working class in its conflict against capitalism. They are still the underdogs in their fight in a world where capitalism is still by far the most dominant structure, it's obvious that those countries were far from any paradise, and it's also obvious that many had to take unsavory measures to prevent any infiltrations that could lead to a counter-revolution. Capitalism is still on top by a large margin, it gets the chance to play moral games. Socialism doesn't, it has to get dirty to keep its right to exist. And this is what Vlad fails to realise, that you may want economic democracy (which really is just a more palatable way of saying communism) with all your might, but as soon as you try to actually get it, the existing structure will never allow you to peacefully do so, and you'll most certainly have to fight for it.

Determinism suggests capitalism is natural... Further it suggests predestination. Funny(actually it's not, I just gave the reason in the first sentence) how academics can promote this freely yet Marxists are berated non-stop because of supposedly striping humans of agency when they argue for dialectical materialism. We have choice just not free from influence or even from ignorance of what choices we have. Marx summed up free will the best I think. "Man makes his own destiny, but not in conditions of his own choosing".

The far right knows very well how to use fear and anger and are masters of misdirecting that anger away from themselves and the true causes of the problems we face and instead get us to fear and hate the most vulnerable members of society the poor, ethnic minorities, or those who do not conform to society’s expectations such as lbgtq+ people. Besides that change is scary and a lot of people would rather believe that the system is good and that change isn’t necessary that the reason for all their progress is leftist polluting the system and if they could just get rid of us then everything would be fine again. The right offers an easy and comforting lie that doesn’t ask for much accept their total compliance. The lefts offers a hard truth and an uncertain future that will take much hard work and scary change to make possible. Many will pick the blue pill of fascism than the red pill of socialism.

Interesting video. The west could quit fossil fuels by 2050 but they won't instead they will try to use so-called green energy to cudgel the poor countries that never even got to pollute. IDK about 'degrowth' term but I'm a communist, so.

The solution is nuclear... but it will never be done right because capitalism won't allow it. It requires proper design for safety(there has to be many layers of redundancy and safe failing) which reduces profit.

Nuclear is part of the solution. The other two thirds should come from solar and wind power. Really solar and wind power should be the main source of power.

@@tobywindgassen8427 Um, no. You seem not to understand how numbers work. Would you rather have 4 million dollars or 25 dollars? You can't wish the world worked a certain way just because you want to. That is why it is so screwed up as it is. Nuclear is the only way to go. It is the most safe, efficient, and energy dense thing we have by orders of magnitude. It would solve all our energy needs if done right. Solar could be done only for homes and small battery operated things like lights. But to run cities on solar or wind farms is moronic.

According to the European Commission, consumption per capita in Romania was 70 GJ per capita in 2022, an 18 GJ consumption would mean a reduction of 3.89, or rounded to about 4. Given the recent development in Romania I doubt the people would accept that. Far-right elements are rising, for example EU Made Simple, had recently had a video about Diana Sosoaca's meltdown in the European Parliament. I agree with most of what is said here, we need better options, but I think other approaches are also needed. I have no idea what they might be, but I just wanted to point this out!

@@VladBunea Do you have any insight why the far-right is resurging in Europe and America? Immigration, inflation, falling quality of life or an combination? The irish economist David McWilliams said in his podcast /episode "A climate warning from the past" that changing temperatures in medieval Europe had lead to wars, could this be an climate change unseen reaction ?
