Inside the State QSO Party Challenge: Dave WN4AFP and Anthony K8ZT
Dave Edmonds, WN4AFP, has had a long, 48-year history in amateur radio, culminating in his deep involvement with State QSO Parties, where he serves as the South Carolina State QSO Party Administrator. After rediscovering his passion for ham radio in 2013, Dave shifted his focus toward State QSO Parties, challenging the conventional belief that high-power stations are necessary to succeed in contests. He advocates for a strategy-first approach, emphasizing the importance of preparation and understanding propagation. His knowledge and experience, supported by his modest setup of an Icom 7300 and an 80-meter off-center fed dipole, demonstrate that success can come from well-executed planning rather than sheer power.
Anthony Luscre, K8ZT, brings a unique perspective with his 43-year history in the hobby. Initially driven by his love for DXing, Anthony has become a QRP (low power) operator, successfully logging over 115,000 QSOs (contacts) with minimal power. His approach to contesting, particularly in the State QSO Parties, is all about precision and strategy, making him a master of “search and pounce” techniques. Anthony’s work in promoting youth involvement in amateur radio and his dedication to providing educational presentations further highlight his commitment to the hobby.
In this interview, Dave and Anthony delve into the culture surrounding the 47 State QSO Parties held each year, providing insights into how these contests offer a unique blend of strategy, community, and challenge. They discuss the rise of the State QSO Party Challenge, which has revitalized participation by creating a year-long contest series that ties together these individual events, likening it to a NASCAR cup series for ham radio. The discussion offers valuable perspectives for both seasoned operators and those new to the hobby, particularly in understanding how smaller, state-focused contests can offer just as much excitement and satisfaction as the larger international events.

I wish there was a better way to log multiple State QSO parties operating on same weekend. N1MM has done some work on some in NW but it can be a challenge on its own. I do mobile TXQP and incorporate POTA parks as well. Thanks for the Video. KI5MM

I won the 2023 NY QP (LP Portable) by operating from a ridge (great propagation) and POTA (attracted lots more operators) location. I believe that adding POTA on top of any "medium or small contest" (that is, a contest where the bands will not be completely swamped by the contest) is an easy way to bump your score significantly. So maybe don't do any more videos like this one, giving away these secrets.

This was a good one. I have done CW SS from a park and it was a lot of fun and if I did not have a way to operate contests from my home I would be doing many contests from parks. It is great to have a quiet location and even with simple antennas you can get on and do well in a contest.

Too many people making POTA harder than it really is. I dont go looking for DX, whatever comes my way, I take it. Once I get my 10 contacts to validate my activation, anything thereafter is bonus. How long I stay in a park is all depends on the time I have and other schedules I may have. During contests, I may call contesters and get my 10 contacts from my POTA entity. I have made hundred of QSO on 2 meters, 70 centimeter on FM simplex. Made more than 10,000 contacts on satellites both FM and SSB from POTA. 73 de N2NWK

POTA is great for ad-hoc multi-multi contesting. You don't need a super station with multiple towers and radios, just have people bring their own gear to a park. I organized a group in Ottawa Canada (VA3OVP) for the last RAC Winter Contest. We used low power, separation, and band pass filters to avoid interference. It was a lot of fun. 73, Tom VA2NW

You guys missed what I personally feel is the biggest detriment to current contesting, and that is a catorgary for portable operations for portable operators. If the major contest would add a "Portable" category, I think it would make things very interesting to a lot of Hams. Portable operators basically get Field Day (AARL/Winter) to make a claim for a "major" event/contest. If every major or minor contest would add a "Portable Class" it would make things interesting for SOTA/POTA operators to show their skills and be able to compete in an environment filled with big stations and huge power. Could you imagine if CQ or ARRL added a "Portable" category to the contest and the amount of operators that would participate from a local park? de K5TXM

The best way to "Advance the State of the Art" is to share ideas... and that is what conventions like Boxboro! and Hamvention do. The social aspect is always a draw, but it the seminars and discussion groups are amazing sources if inspiration and information. I have been there for 30+ years, and have learned so much and been inspired to try experiments that I wouldn't have known existed. Thanks for putting on a great event, Bob... Great explanation guys about QTCs work. The WAE DX is a real fun contest especially if you invest a little time learning how to send/receive QTCs. One of my favourite contests each year having, done it from inside Europe (G) and outside Europe (ZC4). From VK this is definitely my favorite contest of the year. EU doesn't work EU (what a relief for DX stations!) we only SEND QTC's (very easy), EU's are pointing our way (not common in most major contests as they normally point to NA and JA/Asia) and because we only have prop to EU about half of the day we get SLEEP!
