    Bernheim was the first wheat whisky I ever had, and I liked it. But with so much whisky out there I didn't get back to it for a couple of years - and when I decided to try it again I couldn't find it. It's still nowhere around, three or four months later. But yesterday I picked up a bottle of Oregon Spirit wheat whisky, which I'd wanted to try for about two years, and while it's harsher on the finish than I remember the Bernheim being, I think I'm going to like it. After it opens up some I think it'll be good. Aside from the harsh finish (I don't believe I've ever encountered that phenomenon before) it's gentle and fairly tasty.

    I like Bulleit - the rye (though I'm not a rye guy and I've found ryes I like better), the regular bourbon, and the Barrel Strength bourbon. And it's affordable too - even the Barrel Strength is within my budget, which most barrel proof whiskies aren't. 🙂 17:50 Works for me. 🙂

    I finally decided to look at some of your older stuff, and I have to watch this one because even as I type I'm a-sippin' on JD SBBP. This one's 130.9 proof, which is the most powerful stuff I've had so far. It's delicious. 🥃 14:34 The big characteristic of the nose for me is smoke. People have told me that the Lincoln County process doesn't add flavor, but how it couldn't is beyond me, and I get a lot of smoke on the nose. The only other unsmoked whisky that's given me this much smoke is Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon. 20:38 A lot of people say they get bananas from Brown-Forman whisky, but I've found that to be the case. On maybe two occasions I've gotten bananas from whisky, but that note is characteristic for me of any distillery or company.

    • @beautifulbourbon
      @beautifulbourbon 17 днів тому

      I’m with you and totally disagree that the LCP doesn’t add flavor. Tennessee whiskey tastes like Tennessee whiskey for a reason. I do like the barrel strength JD much better than their 80 proof version.

      @@beautifulbourbon IMO Jack black is about as low quality as you can get without being actually bad. But the sample of the 10 year I had was delicious, and the SBBP is one of my favorite whiskies.

      @@beautifulbourbon I've been thinking, and it's confirmed my opinion that just as charcoal mellowing takes certain things out of the whiskey, so it of necessity adds things to. If you put white dog into a barrel for just 10 days and then dump it, the whisky will get something from the barrel, and the Lincoln County process puts the whiskey in contact with charred wood for that long. If I still gambled I would bet money that when whisky comes out of the charcoal it's no longer crystal clear, but has gained at least a tinge of color from the wood, and I would also bet that if you could taste it before and after you could detect the influence of the charcoal.

But I want to tell you tonight that I love your channel, I love your sense of humor, I love the various hilarious things you do (if you have a degree, finger stir, gawgeous ice spheah, even sticking out your tongue in the intro 🙂)... Whenever I come to a new bourbcast I automatically 👍 it, even before I hit Play. 😍 Terry Bradshaw went to Polk High in Chicago, but he's not the school's most famous alumnus. That's Al Bundy, who once scored four touchdowns in a single game. 😂 14:02 I've tried a bourbon tasting glass, and *for me* it was a bust. I got nothing at all on the nose, and the palate was slightly muted. The Glencairn works a ton better for me. 24:11 The most dramatic opening up I've ever experienced was my last bottle of Laphroaig 10. Every single glass was a bit different - it was always Laphroaig, but underneath and alongside the Laphroaig character the fruit notes went through all sorts of transformations.

    11:19 I've found that I prefer Buffalo Trace White Dog with a few drops of water. I use a straw, barely draw up any water in it - perhaps 4-6 drops. More makes the stuff worse, but that slight amount makes it great for sipping, and brings out a spice that's not there in the very grainy untempered juice.

    10:27 The first time I heard you talk about the bloom I thought it was a very apt term - I could "see" the whiskey blooming across your tongue. I've not experienced it myself (but then I've not looked for it), but it's a very descriptive and useful term.

    • @beautifulbourbon
      @beautifulbourbon Місяць тому

      Right. You've interpreted it perfectly. To experience it, make sure you hold that whiskey on your palate for about 12 seconds, swishing it, chewing it, etc. You'll learn about the bloom.

    • @WhiskyForBeginners
      @WhiskyForBeginners Місяць тому

      @@beautifulbourbon I've tried that tonight, and I've found (with Knob Creek 12 and Bulleit Barrel Strength; I forgot to try it with Wild Turkey 101) that all it gets me is a scorch at the tip of my tongue. But I have a mouth that's very sensitive to heat - I only eat very mild spicy food because anything else hurts too much. Perhaps I'd do better with an 80 or 90 proof whisky, but I can't guarantee it. So I guess I'll have to do without the bloom, and stick with the methods I've developed over these three years. But thanks for the advice. It was a worthwhile experiment. 🙂

    I'm intrigued about this release, but I never tried any other Overholt ... I find difficult to enjoy rye in general. Anyhow I won't be able to get this bottle in EU anyway so no biggie, instead Old Overholt is more available but the price range is too high 35-50 USD (after conversion)

    • @beautifulbourbon
      @beautifulbourbon Місяць тому

      Yes, that price is a little high and I'm sorry that's the case. I'm most definitely a rye guy along with a good bourbon, but I do have my limits. I like a spicy rye, but a lot of ryes present with a grassiness or cereal side that I'm not as excited about, even when they're included in bourbon mashbills. Woodinville was one of those I really wanted to like. I appreciate the story and their popularity, and there were things about it I enjoyed, but it's probably not a bottle I'd buy again simply because it tasted musty to me.

    I can't swear to it, but back a month or so ago when I was on my unexpected spending spree I *think* that I saw the 114 here in Albuquerque. It might have been the 10 year, but I believe it was the 114. I was going for other bottles so I passed it by, or else I could tell you for sure. 8:38 Shoot, it's just KC having fun. I love it. ❤ 23:25 I never get anything nutty from Beam whisky either. I do get peanut shells on the nose of Heaven Hill juice, and pecans on the palate and finish of Dickel stuff (but I never get the vitamins that everyone else seems to get). 28:32 I did an experiment tonight with Buffalo Trace White Dog - I put water in it. The first couple of drops made something that right out of the bottle drinks under its proof into perhaps the hottest stuff I've ever had. A couple more drops brought the heat back down. It amazes me what big changes a little water can cause. 33:56 Not grammar - diction. 😂

    3:27 I'm not really a rye fan, though I like rye whisky now and again - but I love this stuff. It strikes me as a good rye for someone who likes proof but isn't a rye fan. Just FWIW my bottle is rackhouse 1 and batch 6, at 117.6 proof. I *think* that they just have the one warehouse, but I could be wrong. I just realized I haven't reviewed this one on Distiller, so you've done me a good turn by reminding me. 🙂 9:51 "Detroit Rock City"was the first KISS song I ever heard, way back in 1976. A visitor had a cassette of the *Destroyer* album, and of course that's the first song on the album. 🙂 12:38 Mine drinks, in my judgment, about commensurate with the proof...and mine's two points higher than yours. But it is a different batch, and that could make a difference. 13:41 I *think* that Hard Truth distills their own juice, but I've not looked into it. I do know that it doesn't strike me as coming from MGP. It's different from Bulleit and Sagamore Spirit, which are, or at least were, from Lawrenceburg. I've found that while water can do nice things to whisky, I prefer to drink it straight. But one thing I have found is that if I'm going to try water in something, just a drop or two is usually sufficient. Like Brylcream, a little dab'll do ya. 🙂 21:13 My bottle was $70 at Kelly Liquors back on the 5th of the month. It would probably be a dollar or two less at Total Wine. But 70 bucks is like $6 less than it was a year or two ago, when the people at Kelly gave me a sample of it but I couldn't (then) afford it. That bottle's easy to grip, isn't it? It's almost as comfortable in the hand as a Knob Creek bottle. 😍 28:00 I love the finger stir too. ❤

    • @beautifulbourbon
      @beautifulbourbon 2 місяці тому

      I think what I was referring to is the Lawrenceburg styled rye, which tends to be spicier than Canadian, Washington and Maryland ryes. I don't believe Hard Truth uses MGP rye, but I wouldn't complain if they did. FINGER STIRRERS UNITE!!

    I'm glad to see you, KC. I was getting concerned about you. But the video's just starting I'll learn how things are going. 🙂 Back when I was just starting out, maybe 2.5 years ago, I had a bottle of the regular Bernheim and liked it, but what with one thing and another I never got around to buying another. Recently I wanted to try it again, and couldn't find any Bernheim, either regular or barrel proof. 😢 I'm going to keep an eye out for Bernheim, but there's another wheat whisky that's on the shelf here, from Oregon Spirit. If Bernheim doesn't show up I'll try that one. 6:40 I like the current intro too, but I bet you could swap out just a of the segments and keep it just as good. 🙂 12:49 I *love* sourdough bread - real sourdough, not the barely sour stuff they sell in grocery stores. I'd love to have a whiskey give me that note. 🍞 16:17 I just don't have that high an opinion of Buffalo Trace, but like you, I've liked everything I've had from Heaven Hill. And I love the fact that Heaven Hill is still family owned. 😍 18:02 I can't remember the dude's name, but he was *hilarious.* 27:23 ❤❤❤ That Sweet Mash Rye is *superb.* I have a bottle that I got a few weeks ago when I had unexpected fundage, and if I could afford it I'd buy it over and over. It, and the two Sagamore Spirit bottles I've had, have come as close as anything ever could to making me a rye guy.

    I love the t-shirt. I like to say that whisky is internal disinfectant. 🥃 5:41 I know the reference - I'm 64. But all I remember about the song is that phrase, and the fact that I didn't like the song when it came out. 🙂 I'm not a Maker's Mark fan either. All I've had is the regular and the 46, but I've realized that the MM profile is too bright and metallic for me. On UA-cam you sounded fine all along. 16:05 Maker's Mark has a lower barrel entry proof than most distilleries - IIRC it's only 110 proof - which means that going into the barrel it already has more water in it than most bourbons. This, I suspect, is a factor in the thin mouthfeel. 18:29 To me that's a fire plug, and a hydrant is where you attach the garden hose. But then I speak Southern. 🤠 I hunted for Bernheim, regular or barrel proof, a couple of weeks ago when I had some unexpected fundage, and couldn't find it. It's really great to know that other people appreciate the Bernheim. That's a darn good pour, and I'm thinking I'll try their cask strength this month since we're doing cask strength pours in June. The Benchmark FP was compared to Stagg (Jr) by other follower on YT, so I'm hoping if I let it sit a few months that it'll calm down like Stagg did and become very flavorful. It's a surprise to see that you blend the BFP with Fighting Cock, since Fighting Cock is a pretty warm pour as well!

      @@beautifulbourbon to be honest, I didn't love the Bernheim. I've had it for over a year and almost never drank it. It was a bit too tame (not sure that is the right word) for me, but it did a great job balancing the fact that the Benchmark FP was too sharp at 125. I added the Fighting Cock for more sweetness, and the 3 together came out better than any of the 3 alone. (for my taste - others may disagree). The overall ABV was still pretty high, but a really cool flavor that did not bite like the Benchmark by itself. I am bummed because I finished the Bernheim so I can't make more of my "blend #1" unless I get another bottle of something that I would not otherwise drink.

    I've had two pints (I appreciate when a more expensive whisky is available in smaller bottles - it makes it possible for me to have it 🙂) of SBBP (both apparently from the same barrel, since they were both 128.2 proof) and it was gorgeous. I love it to death. How many miles do all those steps translate to? 6:19 George Dickel bourbon proves that Tennessee whisky is a variety of bourbon. The only difference between Dickel bourbon and Dickel Tennessee whisky is the name (and the taste - the bourbon is awful). They don't do a single thing different until bottling time. And then there's Benjamin Prichard, which does *not* use the Lincoln County process but is legally Tennessee whisky. 10:28 The main note I got on the nose was a delightful smoke. 14:01 If a barrel is 55 gallons, it'll yield 277.596864 bottles at 750ml each (I used a measurement converter and a calculator to arrive at that figure). But the angels share will greatly reduce the amount of whiskey in the barrel, and thus the number of bottles. If half the whisky has evaporated - a not unusual occurrence - the number of bottles would go down to 138.798432. I'm not sure I entirely trust those numbers - I may have done something wrong somewhere in the math. 18:13 I *love* JD SBBP. It's as much different from Jack black as bourbon is from tepid water. 31:17 Don't forget the finger stir! 😃 You forgot the finger stir. 😢 33:04 When my wife and I sneeze we blow the walls out. 12,000 steps is about 7 miles. So yeah, I got a little exercise, and to be honest, a little chaffed. 😆 I would imagine that that yield for single barrels is varied. How much did the wood soak up, how much was lost to the “angel’s share”, etc. The standard bourbon barrel is actually 53 gallons, according to Alexa. Normally when I sneeze, the Chinese can hear it in Shanghai! I kept it on the DL as best I could, but when the live stream ended I think I might have cause some structural damage in the bourbcave. 🤣🤣🤣

      Ha ha! I actually had to go back and find that clip so know what you were talking about. I often don't remember half of what I say... it's an old DJ's plight. And ya know, you have a point there about the malted barley content possibly amplifying the rye spice. Normally I wouldn't associate barley notes with a sense of spice because it tends to add a fruitiness to a pour, but in this case it could be amplifying the fruit side of the rye a little, which could explain that flavor I wasn't able to identify. New Riff explains the flavors from malted barley this way: "Malted barley can help bourbon taste nutty, smoky, and chocolaty." If I got any of those from Benchmark Bonded, it might be the smoke, because I do remember thinking it was decently oakey.

    I like the White Dog Mash No. 1 better than I like the stuff they turn it into...though I've not seen Benchmark here, so I have no clue how it tastes. 9:27 Is it a*straight* bourbon whisky? The government requires straight whisky to age at least two years, and to carry an age statement if it's less than four years old. So if It's straight whisky and has no age statement, it's at least four years old. On the other hand, if it's *not* a straight whisky it doesn't have to carry an age statement, and can be anywhere from 10 seconds to 99 million years old. 🙂 19:29 I prefer a screw top. It eliminates the need for a seal, and unlike a cork it won't dry out. If I had my druthers all whisky would have screw tops. As I said above I've not even seen Benchmark. But I think Bluff Springs is even better than Buffalo Trace. But it's a Total Wine store brand, so you can't find it just anywhere. Neither are very innovative in their tactics, honestly, and we could use some fresh blood and a refreshing of Ohio's liquor laws.

    I will have to try this one. I usually get the full proof or the bonded option.

      I haven't tried those yet. They're coming up in the next few weeks as I go through the whole series of Benchmark! The Top Floor was tasty neat. I'd buy it again for sure.

    I tried it, once, and enjoyed it. I've yet to open my bottle.

      I enjoyed it, too. I don't see it as often as other Benchmark bottles, so I'll go through this one slowly.
