Amblypygid Ring | Part 2
In part 2 of this series Eric Keller takes you through his approach for incorporating the whip scorpion's claws and body on the same ring as the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. He shows how he uses ZBrush to experiment with the placement of the design elements and how he worked with the client to finalize the look of the ring.

In part 1 of this series Eric discusses the background for the design, the reference he used, and how he uses his knowledge of th...

    Quick correction: I was mistaken when I said that the tailless whipscorpion (Amblypigid) injects venom into its prey. In reality they are not venomous which means they really are not dangerous to people... they just look scary AF.

    Loved this series! As someone who knows a bit about 3D modeling, but not ZBrush specifically, it was helpful to see the workflow of ZBrush while not being constantly reminded what the smooth tool does. I really like how you kept focused on the bigger picture, and showed how to get beautiful results without jumping into the deep end of detail right away. The result is amazing, and I'd love to see the finished ring!

    Im interested in software to help me out with models and sculpts for digital work in Unreal Engine but also for doing models for printing and physical production. You say you did a lot of work in Maya and Blender in the past, do you have to refer to these programs for you work or are you using ZBrush for everything?

    I've said it before Eric, but the ring is a winner. Gorgeous design. However, the video is in many ways even better. I appreciated the overview. I would have probably struggled to sculpt all the features into existence, but your approach makes infinitely more sense. And the Intensity graph... you may well have saved my sanity. Okay, maybe you're a bit late to save it, but still, excellent mate!

    Hey question, How do you sculpt in Z-brush with real world measurements in mind? I come from a CAD background, and I'm struggling to understand how Z-brush can give accurate and controlled sculpting. - Thanks for your video it was very clear and informative!

    • @ZBJW
      @ZBJW 2 роки тому

      Real world scale in ZBrush is easy, but not as obvious as your typical CAD programs make it. There are a bunch of methods to check or set the size of your objects. The simplest is just to use "Sliders to Subtool Size" button located in Scale Master. This will also allow you to set the size of your object with the "Resize Subtool" button. You can also use the transpose line to check the distance between any 2 points. "Analyze selected subtool" will also give you real world measurements, etc etc. There a quite a few ways of checking dimension. The most important thing to remember is that when you're ready to export your model for 3D printing, CNC, etc that you click the "Update size ratios" button and choose the right unit you want to export in. We always use mm, but it could be inches or whatever you want.

    it always makes shallow reliefs....is there a setting or method to get a deep bas-relief?

    • @ZBJW
      @ZBJW 2 роки тому

      Yes, they can be fairly shallow right from the tool. I would try a few things. First off, play with the Relief Contrast slider. That can get you more prominent edges and the appearance of more depth. If that isn't doing enough then project your Bas Relief and then click the mask changed points button, flip the mask, and use the gizmo to pull out your design further. Hit the edges with smooth to clean them up. You can also carefully use move to bring some parts even further backwards or forwards until you're satisfied. The Bas Relief feature is a HUGE step forward in getting designs onto a piece, but it isn't yet meant to be a one click and done sort of tool. There is still a bit of sculpting you'll want to do afterwards to bring your finished piece to it's final state.

      @@ZBJW Thank you for guiding me .....I followed the steps and the results are better than before....My settings....count-1000 , step-1, contrast-0, blur-0........I used various masking options to isolate the areas and pulled the models z-depth up. I also pushed some areas down. Yes, with some effort, the results are good. Thank you again.

    • @ZBJW
