There's an ex-military teacher from Peru in my high school. You'd think we were back in 1985 when I tell you there was ZERO phone use in ANY of his classes. Heck, the kids ask permission to drink from their water bottles. I don't hear him scream, threaten, or anything like that but they FEAR him. He has all the "trouble" students from other teachers - kids who in other classes are throwing things, doing handstands on chairs, walking out without permission, screaming so loud other teachers come in to yell at them. In his class they raise their hands to ask questions, they participate and give answers, no airpods, no hoods, and everyone takes notes. I was astonished. I asked him how he got them to behave so well, he said "It's not hard, you just can't let them." And I was just in awe. I was an ESOL facilitator so I got to see the whole spectrum of teaching styles.

I've been asked to "equity grade" (hs sped teacher) for my students. The school committed to it based on the book Grading for Equity. I'm all about understanding circumstances and making an alternate, equitable plan. That's everything we do in sped. But equity grading was explained to me as giving them 50% credit for assignments not even attempted to boost their morale in trying to get the last 10%. So, essentially do 10% of the work and get 60% of the credit. We don't get 60% of our paycheck for doing 10% of the job. We get fired. HS students need to learn real world cause and effect.

Great advice, especially for newer teachers. Having highly engaging lessons is the best classroom management strategy! 👍

Highschool teacher here and I'm proud to day that I have a procedure for most of the what you mentioned (I'm working on creating a point system for this school year). I'm curious to know though if you discuss to your consequences to the students at the beginning of school. Also, what do you do for early finishers?

I begin my 32nd year of teaching elementary school in August, and I wrote a letter back in 1992 to my third grade teacher. He said to find strength and enjoyment in what things go well during the academic day. He stated not to dwell too much on what did not work out well. I can also say that a teacher has to learn how to manage his or her energy over the months and years because there will be moments of burn out, but those can be tempered or controlled. Great video! Yes! Relationships! When people reflect on their time in school as a student or teacher, they rarely recount the academic lessons, but more their experiences and relationships. Also, I attended a presentation today that said that statewide (in Georgia), actually MORE people are going into education fields in college, but not all of them are taking jobs in education. We are trying to address this. Good for you for sharing what motivates you and brings fulfillment as an educator. UA-cam has enough people that are contributors to a more toxic view of public education. Kids need educators like you that continue to make connections that they will remember forever!

Great video, i been thinking of doing LASIK but my eye doctor discouraged me by saying, I will still need eyeglasses coz LASIK only corrects vision for far and not for reading 😢 so she said why waste the money….. sad

This video SPEAKS to me. I have struggled so much in this job. However, I have changed my mindset in almost every way you mentioned, and it has transformed my outlook. I am a journal-er, a walker, I try to think of ways that will help me feel BETTER, and I reflect almost constantly on what I can do to hold on tight to my love for teaching. Even with all of my lifestyle changes and tweaks throughout the years, I still have horrific days that make me want to run. My goal is to look this life calling directly in the eyes and keep doing it despite all odds--but without losing myself. Thanks for recording and sharing this; it was very validating!

This is great. Something I don't like about other classroom management videos, is that their often unempathetic. There was one video I watched where she recommended to chastise a student if they're struggling. So, if someone struggling after worksheet you should tell them that they're an awful person and that they're never going to succeed. That was a real video I watched. When I was a high schooler, that was what a lot of my teachers followed. I came out of high school with a lot more mental issues than I came in, because it was the standard to tell me that I would not make it in life. The only lessons I remember was the ones where there was some sort of game attached to it. That I could forget that the next class would just go on and on teaching me about how I'm going to fail. I can see that with the games that you're doing. These insults are not meant to be targeted, it's just part of the game. It's not serious. You're teaching about how insults work, without saying that you should insult. I think that's a great way to teach the subject. Especially because the only things that I remember about what I was taught in high school, we're games like this one. So I really appreciate this video.

Hahahaha - all of these are 100% accurate. The "last day of school" question definitely accurate. Around the last few weeks of school, every time I hear the words "final exam" or "exam exemption" I go crazy for this reason. The one that spoke to me the most was the "I'm not gonna be here" LOL. There is always at least one student at a time that says every day that they're "not gonna be here" next week, next month, next year, etc - and then about half the time they never leave. LOL. Great short.

I just had my Lasik done one eye then the second eye after 2 weeks now both are done and it was great. the procedure was quick one thing I did noitice is you never talked about the eye drops that were required before and after they are for pain and antibiotic, bad things can happen without them. I paid $120 for three small bottles a must have I hope your OK
