Grandad's Train Room
United Kingdom
Приєднався 7 тра 2023
Home to Beechcroft Model Railway, my retirement project.
Beechcroft is a large OO gauge layout with 5 running lines over 2 levels, complete with turntable, landscaping and various buildings including a large mainline station. It is DCC controlled via Z21.
I managed to convince my other half that the studio above our garage would be perfect for a model railway layout. The room measures 19’ x 17’ so plenty of space.
I’ve had train sets since a young lad but traded them in for a car stereo when I got my first set of wheels - what a big mistake that was!!
I started collecting again in the late 80’s but never had room for a layout….. until now.
There is still so much to do on the layout so please subscribe and join me as I continue the build!

Beechcroft Model Railway - #56. How many Cobbles??
#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge
Yes, I’m back working on the road to the goods yard!!
I’ve revisited a technique I used last year for the area around the crossing signal box which somebody kindly suggested.
It’s been a mammoth, time consuming task but it’s finally in place. All that’s needed now is some scenic dos and accessories for this area….
Hope you enjoy the update, Andy.

Beechcroft Model Railway - #55. Securing the Brewery.
Переглядів 3,6 тис.День тому
#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Thank you so much for the feedback from last weeks video - I’ve so much to think about… So, I’m turning my attention this week to the brewery and creating a perimeter wall before I even contemplate a yard surface!! I’ve purchased some barrels and a loading platform. I think the platform may need extending and I’m no it yet s...
Beechcroft Model Railway - #54. DIY Road Fail…
Переглядів 2,7 тис.14 днів тому
#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge I’m having a bit of a nightmare this week!! Continuing work on the Goods Yard, I’m starting to look at the road to the Goods Shed. I’ve tried a DIY solution but without much success - maybe I’m just doing something wrong because I do quite like the finish? The embossed/textured cobblestone sheets have arrived but they have a...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Typically, I’ve left myself with another choice to make… remove the low relief factories or keep them!! I’m happy with how the factory backscene looks, just not sure if I need the low relief buildings there or not… I do have somewhere else in mind I could use them! I’ve also been busy making chimneys to go with the backscene...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge I’ve been a bit under the weather so have taken a few days ‘off’ but I’m back now ready to continue work on the Goods Yard. As you will see, I’ve ordered a Backscene which unfortunately isn’t quite what I’m looking for - that’s the risk from buying via the internet I guess. I can’t believe a simple Backscene can cause so muc...
Beechcroft Model Railway - #51. Mini Heatwave helping out!
Переглядів 2,6 тис.Місяць тому
#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Well, the mini heatwave this last week has meant I’ve had some time to spend in the garden, but I’ve also done some ballasting - the warm weather really helps the water/PVA to dry quick. The weather didn’t last so I’ve been able to do some work on the buildings for the goods yard. They are nearly ready to place on the layout...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Wow! I can’t believe it’s been a full year since I was ‘encouraged’ to share a video showing my model railway build. How time flies… I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has taken the time to comment and share ideas for my layout and a special thank you to everyone who has subscribed to my channel - I am truly b...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Well, this has been a frustrating week!! Desperate to continue work on the goods yard but a lack of materials and some trackwork issues has meant I’ve not really been able to make much progress - never mind though, I have been able to do a few bits. I’ve completed the 3 buildings apart from guttering and down pipes (they are...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge I’m always on the lookout for a bargain… I’ve found these laser cut kits on eBay at a really good price, much cheaper than any of the resin kits out there. The kits allow you to put your own finish on them so I’m going to play around with different brick colours to see what I can achieve. Let me know what you think - do they...

Well done. Impressive cobbled street. 👍
Thank you ☺️
The road looks brilliant. Well done you.
Thanks very much 👍
Looks fantastic- is there going to be another running session soon?
Thank you. Yes I must! I get so side tracked with building sometimes that I forget to actually run trains! 👍
Excellent train layout
Thank you ☺️
Andy, dude, that was so worth the effort with the cobble effect! Looks fantastic!
Thanks. I didn’t think so at the time!! 👍
you should setup a few small dioramas on the layout that's meaningful to you. something like a figure that represents you during an important or memorable time in your life. Like playing with your children or grandchildren. or something from when you were young and spent time with your parents or grandparents, something you would like to share with the younger members of your family. it will make the layout even more personal to yourself.
The cobbles look fantastic & realistic
Thank you ☺️
Hi Andy an other way to lay cobble stone roads is to use air drying clay (the clay comes in different colours)and of course a shaped paint brush but leave the end intact and remove the brush bristles and shape as required. If the clay drys whilst working some water rubbed over the surface will bring it back so reworking etc. Is possible until you are happy with the finish. Also you will find that most roads are laid as setts in shaped patterns ie. lines. Hope this is useful. Bob T
Really useful Bob, thanks. Could be good for the brewery yard. Is it quite easy to spread out?
Yes I use a 100mm pastry roller and spread until the thickness required (as thin as 1mm) use pva to assist in adhesive and use whatever comes to hand as a tool. I have several old brushes with the bristles removed all different sizes ie. Cobbles setts paving slabs etc. Bob T
@@user-yx9mo1hu9j brilliant. Thank you.
Nice work Andy..very nice work
Thanks Jim 👍
Commitment and will power, absolute stunning job on the cobbles. I’m looking around the house for something to use, maybe a bunch of old paint brush stems glued together.
Thanks. That could speed things up! 👍
Hi Andy. Think you have it spot on buddy. Building looks superb with the windows covered as well. Wow what a great way you have done your cobblestone. You have fantastic imagination Andy, you should bottle it. Brilliant vlog really enjoyed it. Thumbs up thumped 👍 ....Pete....
Thanks Pete. Hope you’re keeping well mate 😊
Them cobbles look great bit of green in places between them, chip a bit off some because never level.
Thank you. That’s a great idea 👍
I stumbled onto your channel a few days ago and had to binge watch them all! Thoroughly enjoyed the progress and you're now in my rotation along with Chadwick, Everard and Dean Park. I love the brewery and the warehouse backscene is heading in the right direction. The little goods shed seems out of place though, more suited to a small station scene rather than a large industrial setting. It might be better to leave it off and perhaps make a goods platform next to the track closest to the backscene, that way it ties the big warehouse into the railway scene in front? keep up the top notch modelling, I look forward to the next episode.
Thanks very much. Funnily, I do keep looking that goods shed and wondering if it needs to be there! 👍
@@Grandadstrainroom-pn3tt Thinking more about it, as one does, if the little good shed was there first and the factories grew around it then it would also make sense? I'm no authority on these subjects, after all I'm just enjoying the content from the southern colonies 😅
Great videos liking your work
Thanks very much 👍
The effect is great but surely oversized. If they're about 6mm long on a 4mm to the foot scale, that makes each cobble stone 18 inches long. I seem to remember cobble stones being less than half that size.
Yes it is, I did reference that in the video. In reality they would need to be a quarter of the size but it would jus5 have taken an eternity!
Well oversized or not, I think the effect is great. Lots of time well spent.
🎉 thanks again Andy for sharing your thought process and methods. That cobbled stone looks the dogs dangleys, another idea stored away for future use
Thanks very much. I did start to lose the will towards the end!!
Stamping out that cobblestone road looked like an absolutely brutal task... but My God does it look good!!! You've done an awesome job there.
Thanks very much. I did start wonder what I had started after a couple of hours!!
good update on the channel layout looks well keep up the good vlogs
Thanks very much 👍
Patience of a saint - well done with the cobbles Andy, result looks great. Chris
Thanks Chris. Can’t say I’d be quick to try it again!
Fantastic result Andy, i think you made the right choice such a large and imposing factory needed equally a large and imposing cobbled frontage .... although the amount of effort on your part was immense when it is all completed you will be pleased you did it, and when you start to get the feeling back in your fingers too of course
Thank you. Hopefully it will be worth all the pain!
You do a excellent job on the road. All the model. Looks great.
Thanks. It did take an age to do! 👍
Not wishing to put a downer on things but road surfaces around factories and mills would NOT be random 'cobbles' like that. They would be granite setts, same as on main road surfaces. The Wills ones are perfect for that job
Yeah, I know. I did say in the video I wish I’d done straight setts. I mentioned the Wills ones in an earlier update but I would need quite a lot and I’m not to keen on the joins!
Wow that is bang on well worth the trials and thinking about what's best to do. The Stone texture is great so real looking. Your Layout is superb. Thank you for sharing it with all of us. Best wishes Richard Canterbury.
Thanks very much Richard. Kind regards, Andy
That was heroic! Well done..
Ha, thank you! 👍
You need a big sign down the length of those backscene factory units, you must have a lot of patience doing those cobbles, would drive me mad.
Thanks. It just about did! 👍
Looking good 👍
Thank you 👍
Looks amazing mate cobbles we're well worth the hard work ....well done enjoyed the video
“No pain, no gain” as they say, but it does look good. You must be proud of the result. How many roads have you got on the layout? Dark nights will be here soon so that will give you plenty of time. Well done, Bill.
That is very true. Not sure I’m ready to repeat that process just yet! Hope you’re well. I’ve a few days away from the layout, laying some decking for my youngest daughter - hopefully it won’t take too long! Andy.
A sign over the entrance would look good Beechcroft Brewery?
Like it! 👍
if you run 4/5 coach trains the defo. if you run 6 coach maybe not as worthwhile
Thanks 👍
Good to meet you also. Have been sorting out few things that may be of use should you build your own helix. 👍
Brilliant. Thank you, I’ll be in touch 👍
Turned out beautifully ✨✨
Thank you 😊
It’s looking brilliant.
Thanks 👍
The wall looks very good.
Thanks. I didn’t think they would take that long to work out!! 👍
Yes i would extend the sleeper built loading ramp.
Yes, definitely 👍
Barrels are normally stacked on racks, so that is probably what the moulding is meant to represent.
That’s a good point!
The brewery looks good, I would use cobble stones for the yard area, having been to many a brewery the area there ramp is to the wall just fill up with as many barrels as possible also most barrels are colour marked for the type of beer (some had full painted ends, others were squares or triangles) dependant on brewery!
Thanks for the tips. Really helpful! 👍
Another great video Andy. “Wallsend Brewery” completed, good tutorial on the walls as well. Just a thought, in the space between the right hand wall and the coal stage you could put a run down stable block where the dray horses would have been. Keep it up, Paul C.
That has a ring to it! Might ‘pinch’ that name! Nice idea about a stable block as well 👍
It’s coming on really well your doing a grand job😊😊😊😊
Thank you very much 😊
Looks really good!!
Thank you 😊
Looking good Andy, all the best. Chris
Thanks Chris 😊
Keep out sign on the thumb print wall…
Good idea! 👍
Have you tried painting the black bands first, then cut in on both sides with the brown.
Could be an option. Can’t make them any worse!! Thanks, and lovely to meet you the other day 👍
good vid
Cheers 👍
Thanks for posting, love the practical tips, lessons learned as you go along. Looking forward to seeing how you finish it all off.
Thanks very much 👍
Happy Friday Andy, thx for another update I agree the loading platform needs to be longer. Did you make it or is it ready to use?
Thanks. Yes, it does need extending. The platforms came from the same place as the barrels. I did consider making some but decided against in the end 👍
@@Grandadstrainroom-pn3tt I'll have a look online for them, who/what they called?
Search online for Skytrex. They’re a UK company. They also have some wooden crates I’m thinking of getting 👍
Looking good and nothing wrong with having your own brewery! Do feel that unloading ramp needs to be longer as I would think it would be a bit impractical only being able to unload one wagon from quite a long siding. Maybe three wagons long as you have plenty of room?.
Thanks. Yes, it definitely needs extending 👍
Great tips on building your walls Andy. Brewery yard taking shape but a change is as good as a rest. Thanks for sharing regards Barry.
Thanks very much Barry 👍
Looking good Andy. Very nice work. Barrels do look good by the way
Thanks very much. Once they’re placed in the yard they do look better 👍
All looking good! Perhaps you can use a black Sharpie marker pen to do the barrel bandings?
Great minds!! I’ve just exactly that. Needed going over twice as the first time it looked a bit purple. So much easier 👍
