3/4 to 1 turn after a lube film on gasket. Clean oil is best! Never replace same used filter. Trust an old maint man!
He really knows what he's talking about and it's logic at all ! Most of the time when my girlfriend's chevy cruze 2015 RS have that F**** StabiliTrak pop up on the dash, the Economy battery pops too at the same time. It means the voltage is at the lowest. I've changed almost everything. Exhaust manifold, map sensor, motor cover, Maf sensor, Catalystic, prestone tube and waterpump (Thinking about maybe it's overheating causing that engine to jumps up and down crazy, but at least that's a common problem too in cruze) Right now I've just purchasing the ground cable, the voltage sensor and a new coil pack to see if it fix on my side too, Will be back on comment if it works for us too.
There's nothing wrong with the Quadrajet. People trash-talk them because they don't know how to tune them. And you can't expect a 40 year-old carb to run like new. And yes, Bill Clinton sucks (and so does his crooked wife).
Compared to every other carb out there, they are difficult to tune. I believe that is the underlying problem everyone has with them. Mine is also rebuilt in the last year so it might as well be new all things considered. And Killary is by far the worst of the pair.
Thank you
No problem
HEY. having a bad result on a carburetor is a lack of knowledge, dont blame the carburetor, blame yourself. Those are not that bad, it is just that you have to know what you are doing. and it tells me that you dont know the principals of those carburetors. you should read the book and understand the principals of that type of carburetor. so let that type of jobs to some body that knows what he is doing. no hard feeling, GERRY G. from CANADA.
Gee. Its almost like I started the video by saying I have no idea what I was doing. It doesn't change the fact that quadrajets are garbage carbs, especially the computer controlled ones, and never can be fully tuned correctly. There is a reason that the carbs are knows as "quadrajunk". Here's this thing about working on your own cars, you can learn from mistakes. Imagine that. Not taking the easy way out by leaving it to someone that "knows what he is doing". Gotta say Gerry G from Canada. You certainly don't fit that whole "friendly Canadian" stereotype.
@@greasyfingergarage People who call them "Quadrajunk" don't understand them.
I use an oil filter socket set. Never met a filter I couldn't remove with it. Bought it after having a strap wrench fail to get the job done on my Jeep, and I had to resort to a large screwdriver. I got real nervous as the can began to tear in half before it finally came loose.
Which socket set do you have?
Thank You! Most of the other videos on this issue do not address the electrical system.
No problem
How do you clean the area around the orange button. Mine is pretty dirty, I can only see it with camera.
I used the wire brush drill attachment that came with the kit and some qtips with alcohol.
Ive used a chisel more than once.
That's a new one to me.
@greasyfingergarage you've never had a stuck filter then. Lol
I saw the screwdriver trick go EPICLY wrong in a yt vid: Poor guy sheared half the oil filter off right to the adapter housing, additionally they punctured there oil pan. Talk about a bad day.
Yep. That one is definitely not without risks. Sucks for that dude.
I have a old style metal filter cover with a changeable filter inside. I can overtighten it or not. In the old days, I once or twice literally punched an old screwdriver through the disposable units in order to remove it. Big mess but it worked.
I'm pretty sure that anyone that has wrenched for even a bit has done that at one point.
The EGR valve is another one.
That's not nearly as bad as the pump. At least if the uncombusted exhaust gases go back through the combustion process there is a chance of them being combusted that time.
My mechanic son showed me the special pliers. Think pliers with curved jaws work better.
Yeah, I popped in a pic of the smaller ones. I don't know if there are larger ones out there. I will have to look to see if I can find some to add to my tool box.
My vote goes to the auto stop/start. HATE!!!
It was certainly a great idea to make sure starters die way too soon and that they are hidden so you have to take half of the engine apart to get to it.
@ that’s a big part of it. Also the extra electronic claptrap needed for the system, and the fact that in most cars, whether you push a button or turn a key…a computer decides to engage the starter 🤮.
Thanks a lot i have the exactly same mistake until i found your video save my day.
Glad I could be of some assistance.
I'll be install my kit this week, I just ordered a cheap catch can off ebay. But thank you for sharing

Hey Friend, have you checked if the clip is still in the intake manifold? I bought that glue and it didn't give me much confidence, to be honest. Saludos amigo
The little plug is definitely still in place. If it for whatever reason fell out, it would have made itself known. As long as you cleaned out the port nicely and mixed the JB Weld correctly, there is nothing to worry about. JB Weld has been around forever and is an incredibly strong epoxy.
I tightened the front grounds, disconnected negative battery terminal cable to clear engine light and used my new spare key..so far so good.."junk car"
Why did they change from chains to belts for timing?
Not sure. But when in doubt, assume it has everything to do with money. They are cheaper to make. Add to the fact that they have a limited life span and equates to more maintenance fees at the dealers.
Makes you wonder if that thing was plumbed to the intake through the carb if it would add power?🤔🤷😎👍
Eh. It would just end up being the worlds most useless supercharger.
V-Belts are so much easier to work on! You don't know pain until you have changed a serpentine on a modern FWD import car where you have less than a half in inch of space to put the belt tool on the stupid tensioner and then you have to pull on it so hard to get the belt off that you end up rounding off the aluminium of the tensioner what a bad design. Another flaw with it is now you have tensioner and an idler pulley that can go bad which is more parts to fail and ruin your day. And with V-Belts if your AC compressor locks up on a serpentine setup you are stranded on the side of the road with V-Belts you can just take that one belts off and still drive away. Imagine your smog pump locks up and leaves you stranded lol throw that thing in the trash!
FWD is a totally different animal of working on things. I still prefer the serpentine system. As far as junking the smog pump, watch till the end. I decided on the recycling bin.
@@greasyfingergarage Ya I just used FWD cars as an example of how bad one of those setups could be. But I have had my fair share of head aches changing serpentine belts in trucks. (especially newer fords) I like your channel and I applaud you for not falling for the emissions nonsense.
The plugs for the exhaust manifolds are 1/2"-20. They ARE NOT pipe thread. Removing those AIR tubes makes spark plug changes easy.
Correct. I overlayed the 1/2" text on there. And it doesn't need to be an exact thread match if are just wanting to cap it off. It'll seal it off with a bit of effort.
@@greasyfingergarage Why not just do it right? 1/2"-20 is the exact thread.
@@Thirdgen83 What is right? Some would say leaving it on is. Some would say capping each individual plug at the manifold is. Some would say putting on headers is. Right to me is pulling everything and putting in a destroked LS that spins to 8k. That's my plan. When I get money. Now everyone has the info on the thread though so they can get the proper fitting cap.
@@greasyfingergarage What does any of that have to do with what I said? I was referring SPECIFICALLY to the right way to cap the AIR tube holes in the exhaust manifolds, and nothing else. They are 1/2"-20 bolt thread which is the thread of the 5/16" inverted flare fittings on the tubes. I see guys jam pipe thread plugs in there which is hokey.
@@Thirdgen83 Ok man
Facts you don't need to have a smog pump or a catalytic converter if you don't dump too much fuel into the exhaust through too much valve overlap, not enough ignition advance and fuel dumping carb that flows more fuel than air cough cough quadrajet. Back in the 60's before all the regulations cars ran so much better. The cam profiles were better the carbs were better and the ignition timing was better both mechanically and through vacuum advance that the gave the engine the extra timing it wanted at idle and part throttle. It is a common misconception that the hardened valve seats were made to condensate from the switch to unleaded gas. But I believe it was because of the hotter temperatures in the combustion chamber from not enough ignition advance, creating premature valve seat failure.
i got on better on timing gear some of the 235 six cylinder chevy in the 50's had soy bean fiber cam gear with a steel crank gear driving it
Yeah. That is a terrible idea.
I have a question I have a 2013 Chevy Cruze my car just cuts off for a short second and then when it comes on it says service stabilitrak and goes right off. No engine light or nothing when I use the code reader no code comes up where do I go from here
I would hazard to guess that it is a ground issue. Be it the negative battery cable or other grounds coming loose. If the negative cable hasn't been replaced yet, do that first. Then follow the rest of the steps in the video to try and pin it down. If it isn't throwing any codes, I wouldn't think it is coming from the coil. It would also be advisable to take your car to an auto parts store and get a load test run on the charging system just in case.
Right now I have all 3 power steering stablia track and traction control. I just changed the ground to a brand new ac delco one and it's still bad
Disconnect the negative for 30 minutes to let the computer reset. Than check and see if you have the same issue.
I agree, most of that shit has fallen off my rigs , but the engine auto start stop that shuts your car off every time your at a light is up there
That is definitely a stupid idea. But I'm positive they did that to make starters die faster. They also started hiding them in hard to reach spots when they instituted the start/stop nonsense.
Plastic engine pieces.
Being the owner of a Cruze, this is a legit stupid thing.
I had a 1980 Mercury Monarch with a 250 straight 6 engine, the engine gave up and when i replaced it, I threw away that smog pump and rerouted the vacuum lines so that it ran smooth. The increase in power was not extreme but noticeable with a little bit better fuel mileage.
Its funny how that works isn't it?
Chuck it. My smog pump is gone along with the EGR, idle air control, cold start valve, all climate controls, catalytic converter and aux air intake valve. I kept the PCV tho :)
Well the PCV does alleviate all that extra crankcase pressure to stop seals from blowing out.
They actually started appearing in the late 1960's. Quite a few muscle cars came with air pumps on them especially those sold in good ole California. Everything from DZ 302 Z28 up to larger 427 Corvettes like the L71 .
Yeah. They were mandated for the rest of the country in the clean air act and can into being on everything in 75 I believe. Screw California and everything they do though.
Dumbest thing is EFI on engine.
I think you may be on an island by yourself with that one.
yes lets have 30 sensors and an ecu do the work of one carburetor what a joke! I'm glad I'm not alone.
The early style catalyst needed the fresh air so the catalyst would reduce CO emissions also working with EGR Valve reducing NOX emissions.
Well that is the claim at least.
I have a 2014 Chevy Sonic with a non-turbo 1.8L engine. I am not a mechanic but stumbled upon your video. My question is that I think my Sonic has this problem too but I don't see a kit for it. The problem is that after driving for 10 minutes, it starts running rough and there is squealing around the cranskshaft area. I cant remeber the service engine code but it was something about running too lean. I also noticed my dipstick had some suction on it when I pulled it out. I also am afraid to drive it because when I had it in park and tapped the gas pedal the engine revved up by itself to around 3000 rpm then slowly came back down. Does this sound like the same problem you have with the 1.4L engines? I also like to mention I only have 62,000 miles on it. Any advice would be appreciated.
The PCV issue is a predominately 1.4L turbo engine issue. The 1.8L are generally less prone to issues. With that being said, it doesn't mean that you may have a PCV problem. Without knowing what the code is exactly, it could be a multitude of things. If it is running lean, that means its getting too much air. That could be happening anywhere in the intake system, but usually after the MAF. You may have a loose hose. You may have a cracked hose. You may have a dirty sensor. You may have just changed your air filter and not closed the box correctly. I would recommend searching your specific problem for that specific engine and see what you can find. As far as the squeaking around the crank and the dipstick noise, I would guess that your crank seal has blown out and needs a replacement.
How about chryslers mds/gms afm systems? A more problematic concept, in an attempt to gain 2 mpg on a gas-guzzling v8 engine by deactivating 1/2 of the cylinders, than what its actually worth.
You could lump any sort of displacement on demand systems in to that. GM's drops lifters all the time and a lot of people yank all that garbage and put in normal cams/lifters.
My choice is opti spark on the Chevy small block
I don't think the opti spark is a bad as a lot of people think. The idea of it makes a decent amount of sense. They just didn't do a good enough job of making sure they stayed sealed.
Location not so good but helped make the bathtub caprices rockets
I have to agree with the person who said nylon timing gear teeth. Engineers! ….am I right?
Its certainly a valid choice.
Prob'ly a bean counter that they tried to turn into an engineer who came up with that, along with all the other obvious corner cutting ideas.
@@thomasblevins1662 I agree it sucks, and I understand why they did it. It’s about noise. Car makers didn’t want customers complaining about gear noise in their brand new cars, and by the time the plastic crumbles, it’s out of warranty. The nylon overmolded gears were actually more expensive to make than a steel gear. Still, for all of us who had our timing sets fail because of that…it sucks.
no crisis just oil companies and cartels greed factor let go from 35-40 cents to over a dollar on the backs of the consumers they are still doing it today
most of the power loss was lower compression on higher compression engines a temporary solution
I didn't come up with the name. Every "crisis", "pandemic", "invasion", "supply chain issue" is merely a power grab by the government and a way to make money for special interests.
@@greasyfingergarage part right but you're missing the obvious its large business the gas crisis of the 70s ,80 and yes 90 were major oil companies wanting more money for oil and to punish you for alternative fuel nothing to do with government power grab if so, we would have public stations you would be paying less, corporation greed is the word
@@thomasdearment3214 And who owns the government? Its corporations. Everything the government does is designed to funnel money to their handlers at the expense of the citizens.
Even now, catalytic converters work so well that the owners manual has warnings about running the engine in an enclosed space!
Well, no matter how well they work or even if they could reach peak efficiency, that will always be an issue since it comes down to the breathable air being replaced by air we cannot breath. There is no way of stopping that just due to the inherent nature of anything that burns. Be it gas, diesel, wood, paper, etc.
No the dumbest thing they put on a car was nylon teeth on the timing gear.
Valid. I think there was an intention with those to make sure they break to have returning "customers".
ahh good ol GM their famous nylon timing gears,
That's the innovation they talk about under capitalism.

Well, I internally gutted mine on a Cadillac Fleetwood I owned because it was locked up. Car ran beautifully after that, and I got 22 mpg on a trip from Texas to Illinois.
They do have a propensity to grenade themselves.
Well U have it wrong, the reason they started using secondary air injection was with hopes it would add O2 to HC's that already went through the combustion chambers & create H2O & CO2 but in real life that is not always as effective or efficient in certain conditions as others. The key was the Catalytic Converter & the need to extend it's life & they learned injecting air after the reduction part of the Cat would increase it's life span, then came O2 Feedback. The bottom line is the 2nd phase of the evolution of the car took about 80 years & included engine designs advancements in feedback controls & signaling.
To sum up all of your comments, there was the theory of the smog pump of how it would function and then what it actually ended up doing. The bottom line is it added air into the exhaust after combustion already happened. AFTER COMBUSTION. Not during. Not when added oxygen would make a difference for a more complete burn. AFTER. To where all it did was dilute the exhaust coming out of the car. The fact that you worked in a state that still, to this day, doesn't allow for the touching of emissions equipment on a car, no matter how old, even to swap out to a substantially more efficient cat that would improve air quality far more than any dilution pump could ever even be propagandized to supposedly do, holds absolutely zero water. Cats, EGRs, PCV systems and charcoal canisters made the drastic improvement in air quality and emissions. The supposed benefit of the smog pump would have been completely negated had carbs just been tuned correctly.
What do U think 'already though the combustion chambers' means,,,, der that is exhaust. Anyhow I knew U would retort with some rambling remark. I get U better now U hate on California 🤣 Oh & if U did say 1 thing correctly it is a property tuned carb results in no need for ineffective emission devices considering that 250 ppm hc & 3.5% co were about the standard if not lower than for those era of cars.
@@StationRussification Everyone hates California. California hates California. There is a reason loads of companies refuse to sell products there. That state has a stupid law that says everything sold there has to have a warning that no matter what it is, said product contains chemicals known to California to cause cancer. So by claiming to have worked for years in California in a capacity related to what is being talked about, at minimum, means your words should be taken with a grain of salt. And at most, outright dismissed.
🤣
Actually they still pumps their electric now to aid in lighting off the catalytic convertor to remove hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide the idea is to have only co2 and water out the tail pipe
I can't think of a single modern vehicle from any sort of reputable brand that has what you are stating.
Probably the Ford 1.0L "wet belt" that drives the oil pump or timing (cant remember which, both equally important). That IMO is the dumbest engineering idea i've ever seen on a car.
I'll have to look into this thing.
You have no clue what you are talking about. Air pump uses minimal power. The point was to combust hydrocarbons in the exhaust, not to lower readings by dilution. Get educated.
As others have said, they were important, even before the days of catalytic converters, for reducing exhaust emission pollution, particularly in areas with more strict polution regulations, like California.
Well, it would appear that your dizzying intellect has educated everyone wouldn't it? But since you are so well educated on the situation, please do elaborate exactly how it works. On both a physics and chemical level. We will wait.
He is right@greasyfingergarage U do not know what U R talking about. Air injection is to save the Cat & I'd I have to explain that to U U really should not be working on cars
My understanding is that the air pump's function was to provided excess air into the catalytic converter to aid its function during rich conditions, and while it did dilute the exhaust stream, it was to have a more complete breakdown of VOC's and CO in the cat. Like so many things at that time, they were trying to make carburetors work like fuel injection, the proverbial lipstick on a pig.
That is the claim of what the function was supposed to be. Didn't quite work out like that. But whatever does really?
U R correct although they were trying to save the Cat life, it really was an inefficient design, but that is what all manufacturers went through during the emission phase of the cars evolution
.... I was fortunate to work on cars in that era, professionally for 40+ years & 29 of those in Dodge Dealership Tune Up Dept's. My whole career was in So Cal & I was Smog Check Licensed from 1983 to 1997. BUT I am sure the guy that made this video is going to school me 😮
Precisely
I had a smog pump but no catalytic converter. GMC 3/4 ton truck. No computer and regular four barrel carb from the factory. No electric carb. Ran good 350 with hot air choke.
I've been saying it is a stupid addition to an engine ever since they came out. Just what we need, another parasitic draw to REDUCE fuel milage. I like to explain like this. A person is going to take a teaspoon of POISON. Now, instead of taking that teaspoon you take a full glass of water, put not teaspoon but a TABLESPOON of poison in it (remember the parasitic draw from the pump) and drink it down. Well, the amount of poison is now greatly reduced due to the dilution, but the result is increased toxicity from the additional poison. Amount of unburned fuel in exhaust has actually INCREASED due to lower MPG. 15 mpg before vs 14 mpg after.
As the saying goes: The solution to pollution is dilution.
Now, they want the car to run on batteries.
