Hope things going well for you…. Have a wonderful holidays.
13:45 would have picked the painted boat one it looked like a photo...wtf wrong with these judges what even r their qualifications
Good Question.
Pin stripe suit one was best in my opinion The one he chose to take home looked very gcse art to me
Great videos
And i agree with ur winner choice or shlda been guy who did her with blue background
The cloud one i thought was very good and cloud effect rly cool idea n well done but they added like 2 stone to her wtf lol and as u said they didnt pt any structure to the face which dno why ruined it like that cuz otherwise was rly rly good
There are some great painitng moments.
We are done with this show. I don’t understand the judging. We laugh as we have picked the overall season winners each time when we first saw their work. Just pick the blotchiest, abstract mash up and there you have it. My definition of talent differs from the judges. Sad to say so many talented and great artists are dismissed by these smugjudges. Cheers
Hello Jo, I hope you are ok, I miss you❤️
@@CSchaeken I am having serious physical issues. Nothing that will kill me but I have had to change my life ......but thank you for asking.
@@jomackenzie7065 Very sorry to hear that Jo, I hope and pray you will get better soon.🙏🙏
I thought the second one was most exciting, too. Loved the luminosity of her work and the colors. I'd have a landscape of hers in my home anytime :) But I believe and always have believed that the gallery /museum... which commissions the finalists art piece has a say in what they are looking for or what they would prefer. So they probably opted for that style. Same I think for the semi finalists, when they are picked to do a commission, the commissioners will have a say. That's why the judges find the most absurd excuses to like this and dislike that ... and say the opposite a week later - like that's a great painting, but it is really too accomplished and we're looking for someone open for new styles... or they might say things like "here he did this and now he's done the exact same style, I find that kind of boring... or: "now he did something so different, and I can't wait to see what he'll come up with next time"... and say next time "now we've seen he's got his own approach and style and sticks to it and that's what I love about him, he found his language..." My favorite is: "beautiful, but this is too traditional a style for me, too much italian school"... while a week later they might say "yeah, this is traditional, but the scarf makes it contemporary..." You see, to them it is very important to get a colaboration of prolific art galleries and such, it elevates their program to something actually interesting to artists and a branch of the art world instead of just being another silly Tv show. I'm sure a bunch of smaller galleries send them info on their artists and offer cooperation... hoping to get their artists pushed. So - I believe many aspects play into these decisions, starting with who's gonna make the show and who goes on to finals. Best painting probably isn't nessessarily the top priority.
In reply to your comment on the watercour artist saying you didn't know what he was seeing. Then at the start of the video you said they should really add some verticals. That is Plymouth! Those buildings are there and he decided to add them to his landscape. As for your little giggle when you made the comments I thought was very disrespectful.
Daphne Selfe is a supermodel, she started when she was 21 and is been modeling ever since even at the ripe old age of 96. She is in the guinness book of records for it .
her bone structure is classic.
R.I.P. Michele Opoku-Taylor .she died of cancer before the episode aired .

Hi Jo, just came across your video. What a trip down memory lane that was! What you said about my self portrait just warmed my heart 🖤 and I agree, I would've loved to have more volume in my final painting. I definitely needed more time 😅
Absolutely loved watching this! Thank you for the kind words about my painting of Josh! If you ever want to chat to another contestant I'd be happy to offer 😊
Would love too.
I’ve been thinking… after years of complaining ( to myself mostly) about the lack of watercolorists being selected…. One can’t do “ wet on wet” on this show…. Wetting the paper, putting on some paint…coming back in a few hours after that initial layer has dried… well…. No one would be there…..it would be an empty hall..🎆🎆🎆🎯🎯🎯… so there are severe limitations of water coloring styles that can be used…
@@wmbriggz watercolor is under represented. I use a hair dryer because I cannot stand to wait for water to dry. I loose my concentration if I do.
Would you include Bulgarian subtitles in the videos?! Thank you!
@@risulkiart i will try to learn how to do that. I have no idea.
Happy to see you're doing the rest of season 10! I was very pleased with the winner of this one. Her work is wonderful. Not that the others weren't too. Those subtle diagonals in her sweater in her self portrait were just so perfect. Love the way she handles colour and her brushes. Thought the tattoo artist's self portrait was amazing also. Very striking and dramatic. I liked the way your friend Hannah handled the hair of her subject, with the abstracted brushwork, and the quick highlights of desaturated violet.
@@Catbooks It was the best episode ever! I said Wow about a million times.
@@jomackenzie7065 It was so good! What a lot of amazing eye candy :)
I agree with your opinion on the one that was the best artist but wouldn't win because it was too conventionally good, that one is my favourite too. I totally agree with you, and just fyi for anyone watching this now, Season 6 is available on Amazon Prime Video, seasons from 1-6 are currently available as of 30th Oct 2024
@@Nightshaders I am glad Prime picked them up. In real life Landscape artist is on Season 10 or 11.
Hey, Jo. Not sure if you know already but all 13 episodes of season 10 are now on Prime. I won't spoil, but the last judging with all of the season finalists was something else. I would NOT want to have to be a judge! I'm surprised they're shooting another season because it sounded like this was the last one. But am very happy if there's going to be more!
@@Catbooks Thay sounds exciting.
I bought 15ml. Dan smith Naples yellow. I hardly ever use it. It doesn’t mix well with reds or blues. So strange. Waste of $.
i should have been specific. Because there are lots different ones. I use Windsor Newtons only.
Ive just witnessed an even more egregious decision. The award of the episode featuring a brilliant painting or 2 of Dan Snow was awarded to a dogs breakfast of a portrait of a effete actor with feathers on his chest. They do this all the time because darling they feel they must reward the unusual over likeness. Its a bit vulgar to catch someone's likeness in their world.
Totally agree with you Jo. Particularly on the portrait of Derek Jacobi by the painter Frances Bell (PAOTY 2018 S04E08). If you look at Frances Bell's latest work (a portrait of Rose) she is definitely a modern-day Singer Sargent. If Rembrandt went on the show under a pseudonym, he wouldn't make it through the heat either.
@@johnsmithart you made me laugh. Yes, if our hero's were on the show they would be passed over.
Thank you so much for your synopsis on Portrait Artist of the Year. I was an avid watcher on UA-cam until Series 10, when the wheels fell off. I am a big fan of your appraisals and I also agree with your pics. Well done.
Does it go off the rails in more recent years? Landscape artist of the year sure did.

@@maurasmith-mitsky762 Thank you. You are very kind.
I thought this was the episode itself. Please change the title to "Critique of Portrait Artist of the Year, etc. etc." Or something like that, so the viewer is not fooled. Thanks.
They painted the “ back” of the house…. Which gives me, at least, some thoughts as to just how obscenely wealthy these blue bloods were…. I guess giving them such a boring scene to paint was one way to check out who was capable of coming up with an interesting composition. Checking out their current work, the gouache painter dawn blatherwick is producing very interesting ( to me at least) paintings. There’s only 2 more left….
@@wmbriggz I need to check them out. Yes, the house is very pre war. The wealth was Jeff Bezos level.
@@jomackenzie7065 there’s a UA-cam video titled Hannah waddingham on portrait artist of the year… which is 2024 first episode..only video on the channel..so don’t know how long it will stay up as obviously not authorized…

Yeh… I wouldn’t pay to have any of these hanging on my wall…still…checking out their webpages and the prices… many from this episode seem to be doing well….even the faded watercolorist seems to be doing well…if I found the right person..
@@wmbriggz really? Maybe there is hope for me!
It's situations like this where you have to believe in yourself (provided you're good and not delusional). I know a young lady who is attending a prestigious fashion design school. She has an elegant aesthetic that she has to suppress because the school is into "different." A parent would demand a refund after seeing the senior show from last year. It looked like a Project Runway episode where students were randomly given clothes from a Goodwill dumpster and not allowed to do anything to them. Five years of tuition for that.

Well wish I could make a sculpture like any one of those. Other than that I agree with you all the way
If you wanted a brighter yellow, say lemon yellow, would you add a tiny bit of red to eliminate the green from the aureolin?
@@maurasmith-mitsky762 no, that wont work because Aureolin has green in it and the opposite of green on the color wheel is red. So a red will neutralize it s9me and make it grayer and darker. Buy some lemon yellow instead. I am loving daniel smith Hansa Yellow medium as a goto yellow. Ut I have lemon yellow on my pallete too. Good question.

What a great app. Thanks
@@eyeonart6865 i love it.
I loved the episode at the observatory! Difficult subject, yet they all did so well. But when they showed this painting, it was the one. She captured the bright silvery light the way no one else did, and I love everything about her painting. In the watercolorist's Battersea painting, she did her sky early, showing the remains of twilight. That's where she got the cerulean at the low horizon line. It was a smart choice, because it worked very well. My only complaint about her painting is I wished she'd warmed up the lights on the two towers to show the glow from them. I'm not a big fan of the woman who won. Her submission was good, her composition on the bridge painting was good, but the way she handled the railing in the foreground looked clumsy and crude to me. She did the same thing with her commission, with the fence on the far right. Otherwise it was a very good drawing. I suppose her work just isn't particularly my cup of tea.
@@Catbooks yes, to everything you said. That was my exact take away from this season.
The only one that does it for me is the one with the purple and orange. That is a wow! The rest, eh.
Hey, I love cityscapes and other genres that are landscape adjacent, but it does bother me that they've expanded the definition of landscape to essentially mean anything that isn't a portrait or a straight up abstract. Haven't seen this episode, or maybe season, yet. The only one of these paintings that speaks to me is the one with the umbrellas.
@@Catbooks I am wishing there was a still life competition. I agree with you Landscape means anything that is not a portrait to them.
@@jomackenzie7065 I would love it if they did a still life competition, and had divided out a landscape and city/urban scapes.
This was an odd episode. Most surprising to me was the guy who did the detailed vertical green landscape, and then later the messy painting that not only didn't relate to the scene, but looked like it was done by a completely different artist. I like the surrealist's paintings. That cracked effect of the clouds in her submission, the moody muted colours. Good composition in her on site painting, overall nice brushwork. To me her muted colours give it an intentional mood, which goes well with her surrealism. The clock seemed out of place and like she ran out of time to finish it to the level of the rest of the painting. The heron is great! If I had to pull a flying heron out of my imagination like she did, no way would it be anywhere near as good. Props to her for that. IMO she was the best artist there. Pink water painting, no. The sky was nice, the buildings were fine, and the touches of pink worked with both. But the water, no. That's all I've got. Thanks again for doing these commentary videos!
@@Catbooks once again you and I are in total agreement.
I like your commentary videos. Still re-watching the show so I enjoy them even more because of that.
@@Catbooks thank you very much.
Love your content. Don't stop!
@@CorineaNeil Thank you.i have some thinking to do about it.
First… keep going…just go with what is that worst season of this program; second, surrealism is very detailed which I can’t stand. Third, … Just can’t understand how they justify keeping watercolor out of this program…fourth, why not a pink sea? -- red and green complimentally colors ( or so they say) …opposite on the color wheel…fifth, that last painting I don’t know…I’d buy Red Sea one…. But keep going-- accept the challenge..👍👍👍
@@wmbriggz It is an awful season. Do the seasons get better? I am afraid I will become mean and nasty if I continue and that is not my reason for doing these.
@@jomackenzie7065 I think this is the worst season … both for artists….and for locations….. I mean, a classic house with pillars doesn’t really make for a memorable composition…. At least to my eyes…

About the painting with the green triangle, it was a sign somewhere in the area, that's where she got it from. But I completely agree it didn't work, it just felt stuck there for no reason and didn't work compositionally or any other way. The rest of her painting was okay, but agree the guy whose painting you first gushed over should have won. I also liked the tonal guy's painting in the heat and thought his original submission was very powerful and beautiful.
