I love your videos and your candid commentary! As a landscape painter, I'm thrilled you're now reviewing LAOTY episodes.

Love both shows; however, I do agree with your opening comments. I also enjoy watching your videos. Thank you so much. The models usually pick the ones I like.

Ghastly, but you did a good job. I like the outside art. More relatable and quite fun.

I have no idea what their criteria are for winning. In all the years I've been watching this show & the portrait version I'm mostly stumped. However, the first time I saw the portrait one many years ago, my jaw dropped. I was so thrilled to see everyone approaching it differently and producing something different.
It was so freeing. Some started large, some small, some with sketches, some with underpainting, some with pencil, some with charcoal. Some used materials in unconventional ways. And they were all accepted as legitimate. No one came over to your easel and said "don't paint the eyes first".
When you take a drawing/painting course, you learn the way the teacher approaches their own work. If this is the way you like to work great. But I struggled with a few teachers. So seeing so many approaches is wonderful and I just appreciate that your art is as individual as you are.
Their judgement is "interesting" but not the reason I like these shows.

It's a different subject, so a different format is applied. Nothing wrong with that. I agree though that sometimes there is an odd one, strange technique, strange outcome, odd materials. I think they are just curious, which is alright. Not alright is, when these guys get into the semifinal despite producing something mediocre at best. Like the collage or the sewing/stiching/felting division. It is entertainment television, I don't mind having shown those techniques. Sometimes it is really ridiculous though, there was once a guy how made some stripes and blobs on a very small piece of canvas and that was it (zero resemblance whatsoever not even the colour palette), and all the judges were in awe and put him forward, although literally everyone else did a better job.
You should also consider the wildcards, it is probably a pain in the backside to edit, but there are some really good things among them. And there is always a wildcard winner, they show that from a proper angle. I just miss one more episode when all the wildcard winners battling for the semifinal. Now it is just "the judges chose this wildcard winner to join the semifinal" and that's it. They get in based on a single picture, done under the harshest circumstances, the others judged based on two pictures, from one was done under ideal circumstances without any restrains. That's a bit unfair.

I never could figure out how to add the wild card component to a recap.

@@jomackenzie7065 I guessed that, it's all over the place and very hard to edit sensibly if you're not a professional video editor. Maybe you could review the winner picture after the official judging? I bet you'd enjoy those paintings more 😁

That winning paintings colours made it look dirty if you ask me. Horrible.

The word dirty came to my mind too. Very muddled color. I liked her entry piece.

I suspect that you, being a professional painter, gravitate toward paintings that demonstrate traditional European style/approach/ technique …. For me… the more vague the better… and I’ve always admired the Asian style…. And I do like the entry as opposed to the “portrait of the day” of the winner….

@@jomackenzie7065 i just googled abstract portraits images… and none of those show up on the show….except perhaps as a novelty… so there is a limit to their range of acceptability…. Certainly, mad charcoal or Anastasia mily or Kevin Chapman or David lobenberg or frank foreman or Lena gemzoe or ….well osamu Murata would probable…but Prakashan puthur or Rodney Gracie maybe maybe Stan miller…but Thomas Schaller….probably not….. so the vast majority of my UA-cam subscriptions would not be even considered by this show…. So why am I even addicted to this show??? But it is fun…. Sigh…. Just not something to take too seriously….perhaps….
