I am just some dumb furry trash who likes to make music :v
Autumn Brushtail - Dragon's Prarie (YMF262, OPL3)
Just a fun OPL3 song I made as a culmination of everything I've learned about this chip, and about Furnace. I also tried making new kinds of sounds based on things I thought would sound nice in the song as I went along with it. I had plans to make it even longer, but I ran out of ideas, so this will do I suppose. I tried. Hopefully it's good. 💙

Having a single PCM channel can help with drums. Shame not many folks back in the 90s realised that for PC games... but then again, they were more bothered about General MIDI than Soundblaster, so it's understandable why. (Original song by Jun Ishikawa) Visuals created by Corrscope

heatley bros vibes kinda or just retro music (no "?")
@@samkid123 Never heard of Heatley Bros, so no.
Cool!
This is pure synths??? Those snares sounds really convincing!
@@TheIndigoShine Yup! I figured out some tricks. the only caveat is that in OPL3, you do need to use 4-op mode to do it
@@autumnbrushtail you did well!
Ok
Funky!
Nice OPL3 tune!😄🤩😎👌
Nice GDPCMx16 tune!😄🤩😎👌
What a amazing cover, I like the waveform used as a bass
@@groovingood you can get much closer to a triangle wave, but I didn't know that at the time. I would have done that instead had I known
@@autumnbrushtail What? It's possible to create the triangle wave in MIKEY? How?
@@groovingood to put it simply, you do what I did to make that bass waveform, but on a lower pitched square wave, then you play it at a lower volume.
@@autumnbrushtail Thanks, now i can make a triangle in mikey
Nice song! :)
Love it!
Can you do Moon Of Black Rain "BG-00P" from Broken Thunder ~ Project Thunder Force IV
Don't do requests, sorry.
ok, ok ill stop commenting... but like... HOW DID YOU MAKE THAT CLAP AND BASS DRUM USING FM HHHHHOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
The kick is the simpler one to explain. It's easier to make using just about any FM synth. You want to just make some kind of sound that decays quickly to a sine wave. Optionally, you can set the modulator to a multiplier of 2 while the carrier has a multiplier of 1. This way, it has a sort of square wave-ish sound. It isn't much, but it makes it sound slightly saturated. After that, just play with any ways of sliding the pitch downwards. The clap took a lot of experimentation. I started with noise, like, through using four operators to create noise that is fully tuneable and sounds somewhat similar to a PSG chip. After that, I started playing around with different waveforms and multipliers on the modulators specifically until it had a hollow, clap-like sound. When that was achieved, I used macros in Furnace to control the envelopes and the phase reset macro to make it sound vaguely like what drum machine claps sound like. That's the best explanation I can offer, it just takes some experimentation is all. I'm glad you enjoyed my song and I hope I'm able to teach you something about OPL3
thank you (this is my 2nd acc. btw) you did indeed teach me something :)
oh god, im listening to it more and it might be my favorite fm song ever like.. DAMN saving it to my "yes" and my "actually fire music (very good)" playlists lmao
oh, your back! btw cute pfp i LOVE the chords in this
Do you think Sunsoft sampled the DX7 bass to make their iconic DPCM bass for their games?
I don't know, but I do know that they did sample a Roland synth for Gimmick as that has some slap bass in it that sounds like probably an SC-55
@@autumnbrushtail Thanks for the reply! I did not know that was a Roland Sample. I guess we will only know if someone asks Nobuyuki Hara, Shinich Seya, Naohisa Morita or Naoki Kodaka on how they programmed that sound.
@@vidjenko8349 most of the bass sounds in Gimmick specifically aren’t the Roland bass. That one is thrown in every now and then, but the bass they use more often is something else. It’s know what it is, but I don’t remember what it is specifically. It’s actually not a DX7, I know that much… I think I heard that it might’ve been a Minimoog, but don’t quote me on that.
As you fight through a huge space station, your enemy blasts the entire thing in half causing the front half of the monolith to start hurtling towards earth. You helplessly chase after it only for it to hit and wipe out half of a city. THEN THIS SONG STARTS PLAYING. God I love this game.
I played it too via MAME. Fantastic music, but that's to be expected with Technosoft and especially Hyakutaro Tsukumo
@@autumnbrushtailI personally really like the Jazz fusion/metal vibe that Thunder Force 4’s ost has but this game is definitely a hidden gem. Great work! Subscribed!
This is absolutely sick as. Fantastic!
Aw, thanks!
the sonic and knuckles collection had so much potential to fully utilize the opl3. It would have sounded something like this if they had made the songs specifically for the opl3 instead of running it in General MIDI mode and playing the midi files off of it. The GM mode only had preset instruments and those were very limited.
I think it was too late for most folks to use OPL3. However, from my own experience, General MIDI isn’t all that poorly equipped for Sonic 3 & Knuckles’ music. The main issue is just that the MIDIs themselves were poorly transcribed and the instrumentation is bafflingly strange.
Just found this randomly. This slams!!
im getting sonic cd vibes from this

algorithm's not so bad when i'm randomly getting recommended gems like this, very good!!!
Heh. The algorithm is always bad, but hey. You're here and you found some stuff you liked. I don't care about appeasing the UA-cam overlords, I just make stuff and sometimes upload it. I've got other stuff that might be pleasing to your ear though
Insanely good. Thanks for making this song
Glad to see this finally on UA-cam! You did a fantastic job with the drum programming 🎵
<3 instantly makes you feel the groove you've really nailed the style I think you were going for in this. there's so much to be proud of. thanks for posting this. hope you've been well!
It was kinda just an unfiltered tap from my brain to Furnace. I kept writing until the proverbial keg was empty. I wanted to do more as mentioned in the description, maybe a piano solo, but the ideas dried up by then and I just looped it. I'm still extremely proud of everything I did do, and the placement I got in Winter Chip XIX. 3rd out of 20 in the Adlib category and 20th out of 348 overall, and for my first entry, no less is pretty good I think
I'm truly blown away! If I had to judge this by sound alone I'd probably guess this was done on a 2x OPZ. Just another example of what the humble OPL3 can do in capable hands. Well done!
I tried. X3c I've never used the OPZ chip before x3c I can understand why one might think so, I've figured out how to get waveforms out of OPL3 that other people haven't really used. There are definitely shortcomings, but I don't care. I figured out how to make OPL3 sound much fuller than what people might think if they only heard DOS games, so I have a lot more socks to blow off aha
Awesome work as always, especially for (if I'm remembering this right) 2-op FM! Always love to see people prove that chiptune is far more than just using some random 8bit.sf2 and calling it a day (new PFP is great too, ik you've had it for a while but I didn't want to multi-comment on your other videos lol)
OPL3 does have a 4-op mode for up to 6 pairs of channels. Furnace automatically assigns them to the first 6 pairs. I couldn't remove any channels and write which channels are 4-op because they actually switch between 2-op and 4-op throughout the song
@@autumnbrushtailIt's so cool this is doable now. Back in the day trackers supported only 2-op. Then it was 4-op but you were forced into it for the entire song.
It's a little tricky. I can see why some trackers don't have the functionality. If you have a 4-op sound on a channel, but then replace it with a 2-op sound, you might end up with strange sounds on the other channel which are related to the old sound's free operators. You can work around this by putting a note with 0 volume onto the free channel, but that's probably still a very much undesired result from a programming standpoint
great work! also some very nice drums and claps here
Folks have been commenting on my drums a lot lately aha
Omg, good FM drums are a thing
@@midi_feline OPL3 is full of surprises. That said, everything except for the clap are possible in OPN if you know what you're doing.
egyptian vibes lol, good job
It's just something I wanted to try with these samples is all x3c
gonna add this to my collection of cool OPL3 music like some kind of soundchip goblin
You should start composing for no other reason than we have an artist called "Some Kind of Soundchip Goblin".
this is super lively! I love the leads a lot wawa :>
Ayy, thanks
Sounds like a Yousuke Yasui song.
I think MelonadeM was inspired partly by his music, as well as many Konami games most likely
Imagine if Tim Follin made music on the almighty Lynx.
Depending on the quality of the tools available, or if he created something himself, likely extremely good music as usual? Can't say for sure though. It can sound somewhat similar to a NES if used right, so it would probably be at least that good
@@autumnbrushtail I know little about sound, but to me the Lynx has a bit more grit to its sound like the Genesis. Kinda prefer it tbh.
@@SockyNoob you can get a pretty NES-ish triangle wave rather easily. I didn't know how at the time I made this cover, but I do now. It can sound about as clean and mellow as the NES, but the main hurdle when it comes to using Mikey is the tuning. It's nowhere near as bad as POKEY or TIA, but it can sound a little off unless you constantly babysit it throughout the song making process. It can sound vaguely like FM synthesis too, but there are definite limitations on that front since it's like... Pretty much generating waveforms through a sort of pseudo-random noise generator. This is grossly simplifying it, but this is just a comment after all. What does make it sound vaguely like FM synthesis though is the crude lowpass filter you can engage by flipping a certain bit. This is also how you get the aforementioned triangle wave.
@@autumnbrushtail it'd be above the level of famicom lynx can do sampling in a similar fashion as famicom does with DPCM
@@ssg-eggunner it does basic 8-bit PCM per channel if you want. Doing so would eat a ton of RAM though
what software was this made in? could you drop the instruments for others to use? >.>
I made this in Furnace. I'll probably upload my instruments somewhere in time.
awesome!@@autumnbrushtail
