Redemption at the 2024 Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon | Journey to a BQ
In this video, I take you through my journey at the 2024 Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon-a race that marked my redemption after falling at the Fontana Days Run Half Marathon. After months of training in the middle of a brutal heat wave and overcoming my fear of downhill running, I finally faced the challenge head-on in the scenic Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Follow along as I share the highs, the lows, and the moments of triumph in this beautiful, fast, and challenging race. From race-day nerves to crossing the finish line, this experience reminded me that setbacks are only temporary, and it’s how you rise after the fall that truly counts.
Whether you're a seasoned runner or just looking for some motivation, this video is for anyone chasing their next big goal.

Looks good.
Congrats Tina on a well executed run. I think Revel races are the best and have run 11 of them. And I ran 27 So Cal marathons like Long Beach, Surf City, and OC and was never able to BQ, but was so happy to finally get my BQ at a Revel race. I think you'll do well at Big Bear as the weather was nice and cool the last two years and the elevation profile is much better. I've been able to run in the 3:30's each year at Big Bear, so it's a very fast course compared to something like a Long Beach where I might barely break 4 hours. Let me know if you want me to post a detailed mile by mile Big Bear preview as I have lots of notes on this race.
Congrats Tina. I am considering to run this race to get a BQ and its close proximity to San Francisco.
Good luck with your BQ journey! The full marathon seemed popular.
Almost seems like CIM would be a better race for you, it's a shallower down hill.
The second half of the CIM course is a gentle downhill, especially the last 10K. However the first half of the course has a lot of rolling hills, so you have to be careful with not burning out your legs early. The last two times I ran CIM, I went out too fast in the first half and didn’t get to appreciate the downhill section.
Weren't you just on vacation in Iceland last week? lol
Lol, this is a video from last year’s trip to Guatemala. I’m working on the video from last weekend’s half marathon in Utah that I’m going to post next week. 😀
I have been to Solvang before, and I really liked it over there. It’s not too far from my hometown of Ventura. I wonder what real Danes think of it.
Me too. I wonder what the Danes think of Solvang. I think it’s a charming little town for a weekend getaway.
Looks like a great place to run 👌
Yes, it was a good hilly run with beautiful views!
Thank you for sharing your journey. Planning to run next Month,I have the same pace as you, if I can run together, I will be more confident, this is my first Marathon to run
Good luck with your first Marathon!
how often do you travel abroad every year?
Depending on whether my vacation requests get approved, about 2-3 times a year.
Tina, your vlogs are truly a breath of fresh air! Your eye for detail and the way you narrate the experience is sooo engaging.
This helps me a lot for when I go Thankyou 😊
Glad you found this video useful! Hope you have a nice trip and try out the delicious food!
Great video 😊
Thank you! ☺️
I hope to visit next year. Thank you for filming.
Thank you for watching! I hope you visit Antigua Guatemala!
Great, you found out our traffic system. In general, we respect the rules. Traffic here is very much trust based. Cars trust pedestrians not to cross on red, and pedestrians trust that cars will stop for red. If one part break that rule, it can go horrible wrong. It also means that the city can fine-tune light crossings to be more effective, to the benefit for the traffic. If people didn't respect the lights, you can't get any effect on fine-tuning, to disadvantage for the traffic. All Danes know, that the best and fastest way is to follow the rules, it makes the traffic flow a lot better and no reason for road rage. Fun Fact: The Swan is the Danish national bird. Fun Fact II: Did you know, that the Danish Kingdom has a land border with Canada? Google "Hans Island", a funny story. Enjoy your stay.
Great explanation on the traffic system! You’re right, I did find it safe to run in Denmark thanks to everyone respecting the rules. 😊
Tina -Great video! - Molly
Thank you Molly! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for visiting Guatemala! What country are you from?
We’re from the United States. We had a great time in Guatemala and can’t wait to return!
going to gardens soon. mobility impaired and this gave me a nice overview. thanks!
Enjoy! They have trams running throughout the Gardens, so I hope you’ll be able to catch them. It’ll make seeing all sorts of features of the Gardens a lot easier.
Great work!!! Looking into the Long Beach half. Is there a cut off time??
Thank you! Great question about the time limit, so I looked into it. The website says 6 hours. I hope you consider running it!
@@Tinatravelsandruns just signed up! Thanks for your content and search!
Are you going to CIM this year? Im running it for the first time this year
Not this year after running it for 3 years (2019, 2022, 2023). I’m going to change things up and run in Big Bear this November. Good luck with CIM!
Are the flights cancelled in Antigua right now?
I looked into it, and I didn’t see any flight cancellations to Guatemala.
Thank you so much for taking care of that runner! You sacrificed your own race time for his safety. I'm glad you still got to enjoy your marathon! And they gave out Pocky as a treat? Nice! Best of luck in your next running endeavor!
Thank you for the kind words! That box of Pocky sticks really hit the spot after the race.
I grew up in NYC and never visited the Botanical Gardens. Thanks for taking me!
I’m glad you got to preview it from this vlog! I hope you’ll visit NYBG.
That was cool. My friend and I ran the inaugural CIM in 1983 while juniors in HS. So glad to see it thriving! Good job!
Thanks for sharing your story! Glad that CIM continues to hold the race every year.
Nice Video! I ran into your channel for the first time yesterday, and I think I saw you while I was running at Hermosa that same day. Crazy coincidence!
Thanks for checking out my channel! That wasn’t me you saw in Hermosa because I’m currently in Iceland (and still running in the mornings while on vacation). However I do run on the Strand often, so we’ll probably bump into each other at some point!
We stayed in Princeville and loved it. We spent a lot of time in Hanalei and of course got plenty of shopping in. Absolutely my favorite place in the world.
Sounds like paradise. My friends who go to Kauai like Princeville as well.
Once again so nice to see my hometown, next trip you should visit South street seaport, you will see all three bridges and the ferry boats in the water and some amazing pictures for Instagram . Thank you
wow that my old stomping grounds. Next time you go to Dumbo go to the tunnel. You will be so surprise at how nice it is to get picture's for Instagram. Thank for the memories
That’s a great tip for my next visit!
Lovely vid❤
Thank you! 😊
I've been binging your marathon videos today as I get ready for the sf marathon in just over 2 weeks. Your videos are fantastic. Just commenting to let you know how awesome you are!
Thank you for watching! Good luck with the SF Marathon!
Good idea. And what do Dubai, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen have in common? They all have less than eight skyscrapers that are at least 1200 feet (364 m) tall. New York City is the only city on earth with at least 8 skyscrapers that height.
Interesting facts! Thank you for sharing.
@@Tinatravelsandruns my pleasure. I am visiting NYC in August, maybe I will see you then.
You're amazing at vlogging so, so enjoyed this so much. Please keep up the tremendous filming.
Two thumbs up 🎉
Hi Tina, it's so good to see Kauai again. We just love the island and are checking out your video to get ideas for our next visit to the island. Looks like we cannot miss Japanese Grandma's next time! Shipwreck trail was a fun time for us too. We also saw a rainbow on our hike... ahh the aloha spirt. Glad to be new subs :)
Thank you for the sub! I’m glad to hear that you will be returning to Kauai! Japanese Grandma is a must! The rainbow on the Shipwreck Trail was memorable and unexpected. Have a great time back in Kauai!
crap chain food. good riddance.
Biscuits? They look like scones. 🤔
What you call biscuits, we call cookies. What we call biscuits you call scones. Things change across 4000 miles lol
Lol, now that you brought it up, I suppose they do look like scones! However they are different from the ones in the UK. I guess this would be like dinner rolls, but they are much more decadent.
Did you use a particular map for the route that notes the stops you made along the way to Waimea canyon?
I pulled up Google Maps to look at the major route. They had lookout points denoted with some photos. Anything that looked interesting made our list. The Waimea Canyon lookout point was the one that was most well established.

Indian boy hi guys
When running outside is also free 🥲
These so called "marathoners" need to stop ingesting all the sugary gel-crap as all they do is make you diabetics.
I love your video! Congratulations on your PR 🏃♀️➡️
Thank you so much!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
That was a tough fall but, you are true warrior Tina!!! Congratulations on a gutsy finish!!! Big big fan of your channel. Reminded me of my Chicago Marathon last year when I twisted my foot in a pothole around Pilsen/ Mile 18 or so, and had a miserable reminder of 8+ miles to finish but, the only thought on my mind was same as yours ‘can’t post a DNF’. Was on target 3:50 till 18 and finished 4:30 even.
Thank you! Sorry to hear you had a similar experience in Chicago. Nothing is as disappointing as seeing your A goal dash away, but you were trooper and got back to Grant Park. That was a respectable time, especially dealing with an injury and on a flat course where you couldn’t rely on it to propel you to the finish.
Sorry you fell! I almost fell when I ran my first marathon. Tripped on one of those road reflectors during the OC marathon. Did the almost fall dance but strained my hamstrings. Hobbled to my first marathon finish!
Oh no! I get nervous seeing those light reflectors on the roads. Glad you were able to salvage the marathon and get to your first finish line!
Sorry about your fall; great job fighting through another race!
Thank you! Anything to get to the finish 😀
You are a real trooper, Tina! I hope your knee and ankle are slowly on the mend. Your neighbor's cat is so adorable!
Thank you! My sprain is getting better and my knee is starting to heal. Yes, Diego the Cat is adorable!
I’ve been using the Salt fastchews but I see the ones you take have way more Na, and K. Gonna have to road test these before my 50K!
Good idea to give it a try before your 50K. Good luck with it!
I loved your recognition of the back of the pack runners. I’m a 5-hr marathoner still trying to put it together. Getting that 4:XX time would be another victory during the marathon journey we all are on❤
Of course! Everyone who crosses the finish line is a marathoner and I love seeing the determination and grit of those finishing 5+ hours! That’s a lot of time to be on your feet, so definitely deserving of some recognition 🙌🏼
I appreciate the commentary on parking! Parking is a big deal for me bc I spent 1.5hrs waiting to park at the 2023 Los Angeles Marathon, had to dump my stuff bc bag check closed and hurt my ankle running to the start line. Never again. Running 2024 Long Beach Marathon for the first time.
I’m sorry that you had a bad experience with parking. It was like that too this year at LA Marathon. It’s hard to get thousands of runners to park in Century City. Good luck with Long Beach Marathon! My tip is to show up early to park, even though the marathoners start an hour before the half marathoners. Also, I would reserve your parking online early.
@@Tinatravelsandruns thank you! The Long Beach Marathon parking links are all broken and I’ll try to get there much much earlier and nap in the car. Are you running it this year?
