Great Head Trail | Acadia National Park | Sand Beach
We hike the Great Head Trail in Acadia National Park. The hike starts by crossing Sand Beach, and taking in the views of the ocean. Then on the other side of the beach you hit stairs and begin your nice little walk in the woods. The accent is a little steep but not horrible. A lot of rock scrambling the first 3/4 miles or so on the hike. Great views overlooking Sand Beach, the Bee Hive Trail and the Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Maine). Views along the hike are spectacular. You will be exposed to the winds off of the ocean, so be prepared with a jacket, if it is cool. The hike was roughly 2 miles long, when doing the loop. Once you are about 1/2-way through the hike, it gets a little easier and you will make better time. Allow 1 1/2 - 2 hours for this hike so you can pause and take in the views.
Acadia National Park, outside of Bar Harbor, Maine is located on Mt. Desert Island. It was definitely a bucket list park for us, and one we can’t wait to visit again. We spent 4 days in the park and could have stayed longer. One of our favorite National Parks. Of the hikes we did take during our trip, only the Bee Hive Trail and the Jordan Pond and Bubble Rock loop were the only ones that topped this hike. However, there are more we would like to take. You won’t get Bee Hive or Cadillac Mountain Views on this hike. However, if you like some rock scrambling, nice ocean views, plus a quiet walk in the woods to boot, then this is a great hike at Acadia National Park.
To get to this trail. Park at or near Sand Beach, then begin your hike by crossing the beach towards the shore side hills. Once across the beach, the start of the trail is to the left, and up some stone stairs. Happy Trails.

    This video is a fantastic preview and "what to expect". I've got an opp to join a group next year in June to hike this trail and spend the night at the Lodge. I fully admit that the idea of some of these narrow paths with the cable hand holds leave me feeling a little bit squirrely, but from your video, it doesn't look like tip-toeing on a balance beam or that those spots go on for too long. Part of me says I'll be okay, but another part says my stomach is going to flip and my knees turn to jello!

    • @BushesOnTheTrail

      Don’t worry. You will be fine. Just take your time through any of those narrower areas. It is well worth the effort. The views are amazing. We stayed at the lodge on our first climb to the summit and it was a lot of fun. If the night is clear, the stars are plentiful. Can’t wait to hike to LeConte again. The trail is very busy up to Alum Cave, most people turn around at that point. Go early, and it will be easier to find a parking spot and there are far fewer hikers on the trail between 6 - 7 AM.

    • @BushesOnTheTrail
      @BushesOnTheTrail Рік тому

      It is hard to beat LeConte. So many great views (Especially from Cliff Tops at sunset.). The hike to LeConte is more challenging, with more views and the GA heat can be a bit miserable. I like Len Foote and would go back. Not as rustic of an experience as LeConte but the amenities are better and they do have evening presentations at the Len Foote Hike Inn. It was cool to hike the approach trail to the AT and check out the Southern Terminus of the AT. But the views from Springer Mountain are a bit anti-climatic. In my opinion it is worth a trip. Amicalola Falls are a spectacular sight as well. We would like to stay there again for one night, and then leave and do a section hike from Springer to Neels Gap.

      @@BushesOnTheTrail Thanks for the insight. We have a group of six guys going and we are all in our 60's now. We've done a fair amount of hiking and kayaking over the last 30 years but a couple of us are slowing down a bit. I still hike up to the LeConte Lodge every year with another group but some would not want to so Len Foot looked like a good middle ground for them. We are staying two days in early March and several of us plan to hike over to Springer the second day. Is there a restaurant at Springer Mountain or should we pack a lunch?

    • @BushesOnTheTrail

      Thanks for the compliment. That is a great question. I am not exactly sure. I have always made reservations on-line ahead of time so I could pick my spot and make sure it was available for the duration of our stay and not have to move sites everyday. Sites can fill up so you may get there an not have any available. However, the times we have been there have been mixed. Sometimes all of the sites were claimed, and at other times there have been a handful that are seemingly not taken.

    • @BushesOnTheTrail
      @BushesOnTheTrail 2 роки тому

      Sorry for the delay in responding. I have been traveling a lot. The best place to check for road closures is to Google The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. That should give you a link to their NPS site. They typically have road closure and opening alerts on that page. The weather is so unpredictable in the spring it is hard to know exactly which days the road will be open.

    Do they have bear boxes to store our food?

    • @BushesOnTheTrail
      @BushesOnTheTrail 2 роки тому

      I did not see any, but we stored ours in sealed containers in our camper van. This is directly from the website: • Caution: Bears and other wildlife frequent the area. All food and equipment used to prepare and store food must be kept in a sealed vehicle or camping unit of solid, non-pliable material AT ALL TIMES when not in use. All scented items, as well as all water containers MUST be stored. Dispose of garbage promptly in dumpsters provided. Unattended or improperly stored coolers, food and/or scented items may be impounded by campground staff. Violators are subject to fines. • Dispose of garbage promptly in bear-proof dumpsters. This rule is strictly enforced!

    Last time I hiked up was in the mid 1990s. There were no stairs, just extremely steep dirt and rock sections. It was STEEP! Tried going the unofficial back trail but it was so steep my fear of heights kicked in and had to move back. The worst part of the trail was the final ridge top going to the chimney tops rocks. Had to step on eroded, slick rhododendron roots to get there and back. Couldn’t make it to the top of the rock because fear of heights and the yellow jackets nest in the rocks. I loved going up the road prong trail to sit on some rocks beside the stream and one of the waterfalls to just relax and enjoy the atmosphere. There’s a section just after the spur where the forest floor flattens out before getting to the road prong stream that I always felt a “presence”. It wasn’t threatening. I was like being observed by someone from a distance.

    • @BushesOnTheTrail
      @BushesOnTheTrail 2 роки тому

      Thank you for the information. In certain sections of the trail, without the steps, it would be really steep and difficult. Especially if it was a bit icy. It is heartbreaking what the fires have done to this magnificent area. Hopefully, someday in the near future the last part of the trail will be open for everyone again.
