Hi! my name is Chris A.K.A. Retro & Rusty and this is my channel dedicated to Classic and Retro Cars.
I have driven 70s, 80s & 90s Car for years but in the last few year I have decided to make more of an effort to work on them myself. While I do work on them I take the time to film the jobs i'm undertaking to help out other or entertain you on your coffee break.
Cars on the channel are:
My 1985 Ford Escort mk3 (1.1) Popular. This might seem a bit of a boring Car to some but when did you last see one? Its a car I always wanted as child so i'm trying my best to hold onto it.
My 1979 Ford Capri 2.0 Ghia. This car is probably the reason I started the channel. I've filmed every job from Carb rebuilds, interior removal, brake jobs you name it i've probably uploaded it or am about to!
My Dad's 1979 Triumph Spitfire. Bought in 2017 and driven from Glasgow 5 hours to my parents house.

RETRO & RUSTY - TRIUMPH SPITFIRE CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER
After the Spitfire wouldnt go into gear and move out of the garage, we had to get investigating what could be the problem. In this video watch how we found out the clutch master cylinder was to blame and how we replaced it.

TESTING OUT MY CB RADIO (2024) - CHEIZA 702
Переглядів 1,6 тис.8 місяців тому
Taking out my Cheiza 702 in my 1985 Ford Escort to see if we can hear anyone talking and hopefully talk back to them. Any advice is welcome, I'm new to this but find it quite interesting. If I can get this working right I might buy a second unit for my Capri.

WELCOME TO 1979 - Capri & Spitfire comparison - Body work - Capesthorn Hall & Spring Compressors!
Переглядів 2942 роки тому
In this video we look at my Capri and Dads Triumph Spitfire. Both Cars are 1979 (the Capri a late T Reg) and I thought it would be interesting to get them both together. After this we head to Capesthorn Hall for their second Car show of the year, then look at Body work and my "new" Spring compressors. IF you keep a keen eye you might see my attempt at being in the Sweeney too!

TRIUMPH SPITFIRE 1500 - FULL WIDTH RADIATOR REPLACEMENT (1979)
Переглядів 1,5 тис.2 роки тому
This time we are replacing the radiator on my Dads 1500 Spitfire. It always got quite hot so we decided to do the full width radiator mod. This is a common modification and basically the radiator that the earlier cars came with.

i am thinking of putting a crossflow in my spitfire
have the same 1,1 4 gear 54 hp car..(.1983 car of the year)..a lot of details is different on the first mk3 the manual choker is on the british ones..missing it on my germany made one
This oil change is incorrect. Since you lifted the car on its side, some of it will be left in the trough. It would have been better if I had used the ramp on which to pull off. But since you change the oil in this way, you should put the car on the ground when the oil is drained.
Very difficult to watch. this should have been a 30 second video starting at 2:50, without music drowning out the sound of the engine. Less is more!
Never saw green motor oil before. Looks like Diesel fuel but thicker.
I learn to put the thermostat cover on the hose first then bolt it down seemed easier
and yes it was the 70's, some time has passed. Now there is the internet
get id of the aluminum foil BEFORE you set the SWR
Great vid thanks for sharing. 🐵
Set the switch on the SWR meter to “FWD.” Turn the radio to channel 1. Key the microphone (depress the button and hold it). Turn the knob on the SWR meter labeled “SET” or “ADJUST” until the needle reaches the setting position at the end of its range. While still keying the microphone, flip the switch on the SWR meter to the “REF” or “SWR” position. Quickly record the reading given by your SWR meter and release the transmit key on your microphone. You are now going to repeat this process for channel 40. Follow steps 4 through 9. The objective behind tuning your antenna is to make these two readings as close as possible. Getting down to a 1.5:1 ratio or below makes for a passable broadcast signal. There are two basic points to understand before adjusting the length of your antenna: If the SWR on channel 40 is higher than that on channel 1, your antenna is too long. If the SWR on channel 1 is higher than that on channel 40, your antenna is too short. At the moment little to no RF is been transmitted out of antenna. It is been reflected back in to radio. I would also check if audio is coming out of the microphone by plugging in speaker or headphones into PA jack on the back of radio. You should be heard on PA speaker if the microphone is ok. Hope this helps. 73 De Aiden EI8HJB.
Great information as always. Thank you very much.
Using the meter wrong. Select Channel 1, select FWD adjust knob to SET position. Then move switch to REF and take reading. You should be looking for an SWR reading of less than 2 (ideally 1.5 or better). Repeat process for Channel 40. Depending on readings you can workout whether aerial is too long or too short. If SWR high on low (Channel 1), aerial needs to go up, high on high (Channel 40) need to shorten. Don’t operate set if SWR is more than 3 - you will pop the output stage. A very high SWR on both 1 and 40 usually means a potential short in the coax or plug somewhere. SWR is Standing Wave Ratio and is measurement of the amount of RF power being reflected back into the radio when transmitting. Channel 19 is supposed to be calling channel but less so these days - used to be for mobile stations with Channel 14 for home base. But those rules don't seem hold much water these days - at least not where I live. Also, probably better to wait for break in conversation before trying to 'go in on the side' because otherwise you might upset some folk if you key up over the top. On any other channel other than 19, if you want to 'chip' into a conversation, wait for a pause, then call out either 'On the Side' or 'QSK' and then wait for you to be called in. By the way, love the MK III Ford Escort. I had one in almost the same colour many many years ago. :-)
It looks to me like the antenna situation is very bad. Your SWR (standing wave ratio) is far too high! The antenna and/or coaxial cable have something wrong with them. With the SWR meter in REF (reflected power) position, you should be seeing no needle movement while transmitting. What your SWR meter is showing you in this video is that your signal is not getting out. Instead you have all of the RF from the radio coming back into the radio. This is not only bad because no one can hear you, but it causes heat build-up in the final output transistor of the radio causing damage and deterioration to that transistor. If you can rig up an areal that is not giving you such a terrible SWR, you will be heard and your radio will run cooler.
hey man, ive put a rig in my van now too lol. used to use cb a lot in the 90's. To Swr (swar) your aerial you physically have to change the length of the aerial, using the little allen screw near the base. if the swr is low on 1 but high on 40, then your aerial is too long. if its high on 1 and low on 40 then the aerial is too short. it only needs small adjustments... like 1mm at a time. and 19 is the calling channel, so get on there for your 1-9 a roger, or 1-9 for a rig check :) edit: and once its swarred in, disconnect the swr meter and just have the aerial direct into the rig
Wow,this takes me back to about 1980 when I was 12 years old,,great days. With the SWR You want to read 1.5-1 or lower when you key the mic. Plug in a speaker to your PA socket and talk. If you hear yourself the mic works fine mate. Hello from reddish fella. ✌️👍
What was the issue in the end? Mines doing the same! 1990 ford transit mk3 2.0 pinto ambulance
Hey! In the end it seemed to be the accelerator pump on the side of the carburettor. It was actually in the wrong way around and wasn’t firing and fuel down into the carb. If you press your accelerator you should see a jet of fuel. If not that’s the problem. It could also have a rip in the diagram. Mine had a few problems but once I sorted that out it started up every time and never cut out. I guess if that’s all fine it could be something choke related?
wrong
Care to elaborate? Videos a bit old now and the cars been on the road for about 2000 miles
There is more grease in my hair than in those front breaings@@RetroAndRusty
haha fair enough@@benmorris1076. From the pack of grease that came with them and what I was being told about over greasing them thats what I did at the time. I have added more grease since.
Very nice selection of old fords, do like your base model escort 👍
Fair play to you for attempting that on your own on a driveway m8...you must of had previous experience at this sort of stuff i take it
Thanks mate. I wish I did! Although I've had old cars for years the Capri is the first Car I've really worked on. I've made a lot of mistakes mainly taking it to garages early on and spending too much money on jobs. This was me getting stuck in properly to make it work. Once I sorted the Axle, front suspension/brakes and the Carb It really transformed the Car. I had a garage put a clutch in and I use the Car a lot now. Just need to learn how to weld next ha!
@RetroAndRusty the rear diffs on capris were never great on there best day they always suffered from leeks or seizing up altogether they normally start rumbling when there's a problem on the way plus the front antiroll bar bushes are prone as well you will get a shake on the steering I know all this beacuse I've had a 2.8 injection plus 2 other 2.0 lasers aswell...also the half shafts can cause problems aswell leaking oil through the seals or even snaping off if drove hard those are the things to look out for m8
check those 2 tone slippers yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
You know it! Skanking the pedals!
Keep it old skooooooooooooooolllll coooooooooooooool
Keeping it kewl Pete
Another nice video from you that helps out other DIY'ers like myself. I own an original Ford Capri MkIII 3.0S from 1978. It's still in good shape but yesterday I saw a small rust hole in the right chassis leg just where the leaf spring mount sits. I need to weld it but as accesibility is poor I'll need to get the rear axle and leaf spring out of the way. This gives me the opportunity to inspect further and clean/protect the chassis leg and area around. Also the rear axle needs new bearings (don't have a clue if wheel bearings and/of diffs) because it makes some noise that dissappears somewhat if you drive for a longer time. Keep up the good work. Hope you can enjoy your Capri and hit the road when ever possible! Regards Erwin (Belgium)
Thanks for the comment Erwin, I need to get a few more videos up. Theres more from the Capri and Escort yet. Enjoying the Capri now a lot more. It too is rustier and thats the main problem. Mechanically its getting there though. Sorry to hear about your rust situation, hopefully you can get it sorted. Re bearings I had one fail last year and had a garage replace it. It was a half shaft bearing and you could hear it worse when taking corners. Also leaked oil everywhere. Have you checked your diff for low oil?
How much did the replacement of the wheel rear bearing cost? I bought my Capri 10 years ago and it already had the 'rear' noise. The rear axle showed no leaks and there was enough oil inside. I added some diff additive to the diff oil which helped lowering the noise but it's still there. I find it difficult to diagnose where the noise comes from , I feel the noise is there all the time, maybe less when driving fast (altough she still accelerates happily and easily to 150km/hr if one wants to) but maybe it's the engine sound that helps cancelling the axle noise (laughing)... Well I think I need to dismantle/inspect the axle and leaf springs, so she will be a few weeks in the garage but that gives me an opportunity to inspect thoroughly , clean and protect her underside ...
Thanks mate, both me and the car are well.
WHAT COLOR IS THAT EXACTLY ? thanks
Ford Diamond White
Seen your car down there today lovely motor 👍
Got the same car in solar Gold, I am restoring It and replacing my suspensions with lowered 40mm ones. Thank you
considering how much effort it takes when using a machine to cut and polish with McGuiars, I have a feeling that you're expecting too much after rubbing it by hand for 30 seconds.
Thanks for posting , hope you and the car are doing well.
Great vid. Thanks for sharing.
I’m currently messing with this on my cortina. The cable stretched so replaced it then found the hook the spring goes on was snapped and there was no spring. Had to get universal clutch springs as you can’t get them. The pawl jams completely
Love it, just driving... Time to sort out the brakes on my Capri and get back out there....
Mine are still pretty rubbish. I think its either the servo or the Landrover master cylinder upgrade someone did.
Nice vid, thanks for featuring our little 4CV and MX5!
Hi , what was actually cause of the fuel leak ? Was it just a perished pipe ? Thanks
We think so. In the end we replaced the pipe on the tank to the hard line and its been ok since.
Looks like a really good turn out, nice variety. The little blue Renault 4CV belongs to @OldClassicCar, they did a report on it last month. Always like your driving footage, hits the childhood nostalgia a bit, especially that view in the door mirror.
Its a great meet! I went down today and it was just as busy. Thanks re driving footage, I always like to get some in there. Good to know about @OldClassicCar 's youtube too!
How often does this take place... looks cool
Its monthly I think. Theres one tomorrow 912th March). It says on the crewe heritage centre whats on 👍
@@RetroAndRusty Looks good and I might give it a try myself.
Nice video, more Spitfire videos please. Like the breaks for the cat, the bee, and that long shot of your dad’s forearm :)
I'm sure the spitfire will make more appearances towards summer :) I like to film a bit of everything haha.
Hey there, I loved the video. I have a question about the Ford Escort mk3, does the clutch share the same brake fluid reservoir as the brakes???
Hi Arnold, My mk3 has a brake servo with a reservoir on the top which is the same as all mk3s with a servo. The clutch doesn’t use fluid it’s a cable from pedal to lever on the gearbox. A setup with clutch fluid would have a hose from the gearbox to a slave cylinder by the clutch pedal.
There’s no fluid on the clutch system as it uses the cable to pull the clutch. It’s mechanical rather than hydraulic like modern cars
only just getting to this now brother, thanks for the link. love it!
Great work buddy
I have an 88 Escort but my set up is identical to yours. I couldn't take the bottom half of my dash off so it was an absolute nightmare for space. It took an age to get the metal clips out. Same as you, my replacement part wasn't right so tomorrow I will be getting the replacement. It makes me sad that you say the putting back is the hardest part because that means I have that to come. Anyway, thanks so much for the video. Helped me an absolute tonne.
Hey Matthew, yeah sorry to be a bummer but hopefully some of my failings putting it back together might make it easier for you. Also make sure those washers go back in the same, i must have something different and it feels a bit loose under foot sometimes.
@Retro & Rusty will do buddy. Fingers crossed you figure out what it is.
You cannot gauge engine temps by the uncalibrated Smiths temp gauge and it's associated sending unit. Check the running temps with a stand alone thermometer. As already said, most high temp recordings are due to a bad or inappropriate temp sending unit.
My 1975 1500 never gets above half on the temp gauge weather at idle cruising speed or town driving and it's got an old small radiator on it, I would hazard a guess that your water pump is weak or there are other obstructions in the system. A lot of old cars have the thermostat removed as it eliminates a potential for overheating in the future, thermostats are more for winter driving anyway to allow your car to get up to temperature and people don't tend to drive their classics in the winter anyway. Because most old engine are cast iron and have poor resistance to rust the water soon turns dirty and rusty and the thermostat is usually the first thing to fail, if it fails in the closed position your car will inevitably over heat.
Beautiful
Is your car a 2.8i or a 1.6 or 2.0, I honestly cant tell
Cheers for the snippet of my truck. 🙂
It’s a beautiful truck man!! Nice to see it in real life 👍
Great to meet you Chris. Awesome video mate. Great event. Catch up with you soon!!
Cheers Andy, great to meet you too! The Galaxie looks ace mate! Would hope to see it one day!
What a cracking event man! Wish I could have made it up for this one! 😎
It was a great event dude! I would have taken the Capri but it needs a tail seal for the gear box. The drivers seat/centre console also get really hot after an hour. Not sure if you’ve ever had that? Next year hopefully in the Capri
Had a sit in the GS Club, dead friendly bloke. Bloody cold wind that day though.
Yeah that was a lovely car! Great you got to sit in it. Your right about the wind and cold. I need to sort that out with the camera mic in the future.
Stoke spotted there, nice see a mk3 stil about.
