How not to kill basil.....plant 4 of them, then who cares 😂
Man I love this channel
Great information. Last year I tried onions from seed for the first time and sadly walked away when they died off. Not wanting to rip them out, I left them in the pot and later noticed they were starting new green leaf shoots. Now in their second year they are looking healthy and awesome. That sort of information should be put on the seed packets, but then, who would buy seeds that take two years to harvest?
🥕🥔🥒🫑🥦🧄🍄
🌱 All excellent ideas - and not just because I practice most of them myself... 😜
Whether you’re growing basil on a windowsill or in your garden, it’s more than a plant; it’s a daily reminder of how small acts of care and attention can bring beauty and flavor to life. Keep growing y’all! ❤🪴
I didn't know that avocados, citrus fruits and strawberries were considered to be vegetables. Do you even know the difference?
The basil plants from supermarket are easy to grow, just plant the trimmings. They also taste the best
I don't even do gardening. But thumbs up on the usefulness of the video anyways. 🙂
ALGORITHM!!!
3:13 Really? I do that all the time🤗 Cut the pot into four pieces and then separate 10-20 healthy plants out of it. You just have to defoliate and crop the pant down to the third node, once it got a hold🤗
The 2 kale plants I planted this year had a zillion bugs on it and I didnt know what to do as I wouldn't have eaten it looking the way that it was, so I pulled one out ! The other was decimated and a sacrificial plant from what I saw. What should I have done?
airloom
Lavender (not a vegetable) in my experience is extremely allelopathic (I just learnt this word thanks to this clip). But yes I have planted lavender to bring in the pollinators only to realise over time that they should have their own allocated bed 🙂.
I have a Common Walnut which used to cover half of my garden (80’) ive pruned it back since moving in and chopped and dropped the prunings and composted them, the only reduction in growth was due to sunlight lost which is no longer a problem, I believe it is Black Walnut that produces Jugilone not so much with the common walnut.
I grow veggies and herbs indoors for a few years now. Never had a problem getting basil to germinate and grow. The problem I had was keeping them alive after a few harvests. They are very “light” finicky. I finally realized my basil plant prefers being under grow lights as opposed to a sunny window sill. Strange, but it works and I keep pruning/ harvesting and it is still going strong!
🙏😎 🌱
I get liquid eggs from boneless chicken.
How do you transplant small watermelon plants? Mine always die after repotting.
That title card is inaccurate, it will grow avocado , just not hass avocado because of genetics and stuff
I strip all the leaves off the basil bush for pesto etc. They will all grow back. I've done that 4 times per basil bush and by about then it's winter.
Not sure how you are monetized, most of what you say is absolute rubbish. Some people are just gullible.
Fascinating video and such a pleasure to watch. I enjoyed your humour too. 🐬😄
🍅🍅🍅
We grow basil in our tomato bed at the community garden. They were Bunnings punnet with 6 plants. They are all doing well, & look like your better healthy ones, not spindly at all. Other good successes for us this year are cucumbers, capsicums, blue lake beans, eggplant and a few others that are really healthy & just about bearing.
when growing broad beans, if you eat them fresh the skin is edible. We boil them in stew and cut the beans in half the leave the case on and just pick of the woody ends similar to green bean
Those cabbages are incredible!
How to stop rats eating Basil.
Make a border/ barrier around the base of the basil using those sticky cardboard mats. Make it so the rat has to walk on the sticky surface and with a bit of luck it will get stuck. I had cockroaches eating my rose at night and that's how I solved that one.
I cannot say this enough, if you are producing a lot of herbs etc and cannot use them straight away, FREEZE them. They can be frozen as is in a little zip lock bag, they can be frozen in oil in same,, or you can process them into pesto etc. I had a lot of fennel leaves this year and I used the dehydrator to dry them off and then powdered them, put into a zip lock back and froze it, stays loose so can take out as much or as little as you like. Over abundance of tomato, same, I do not process them I simply put them on a baking tray in the freezer, once frozen pop into zip lock bags. I had enough from last summer we have only just finished them. You can either defrost and the cores and skin come out or you can start to cook them down and the same thing happens. I do the same with all excess produce, I prep it, freeze it on a tray, bag it. It means you have all your ingredients ready to go so no extra prep when you are really busy or tired. Hubby bought a basil as we didnt have any left, once he finished with it was as you said, cut it all the way back and kept it on the window sill, picking off at the nodes and it is now happily growing in the ground. Thanks for the channel.
Every plant grows from a seed. So, you actually have to grow everything from a seed. If you didn't, somebody did, or nature did. What a silly title lol
I am not the only one that calls the leaves "solar panels" 😃
I was feeling proud of my surviving basil seedlings just 12 hours ago. But about three hours ago, the chicken got them (now headless stalks). Keep away from chickens, they are large feathered pests, but I do love them. I would like to live in a world with both chickens, and basil.
1st growing basil and used seed raising mix blended with coir fibre and go at least 90% success. Now have many pots of basil!!
I just feed my supermarket herbs with hydroponic solution and they flourish!
That's really interesting, the mix they come in is pretty much a hydroponic medium. That might be how they grow these to begin with. You might be on to something 🧐
I got mine to grow both from seed and from cutting. From what I learned from the past yr growing Basil it's best to grow them in a shaded area through the Seed method. While using NON CHLORINATED water for cuttings and make sure no blemishes on the stems and 45° angle must be observed. So far I've grown 4 varieties but the only 1 I grew from seeds were the Genovese Cultivar hoping to get some seeds from the other varieties though
My ex-girlfriend and I planted some basil seeds to start a balcony garden together. We quickly disagreed on the approach, so we planted separate pots... I did 3 seeds per hole, spaced 3 inches apart in my pot. She did a lot of seeds sprinkled all over her pot. Not long after, my basil were all a few inches tall with beautiful leaves, while she had a lot of little sprouts no more than a centimeter tall and had to remove a lot due to the overcrowding! We learned that competition is not healthy for Basil! (nor our relationship) 😶🌫
Helpful video, thanks! I am in the US in KS and I have always direct sewn Basil in the garden with no soaking and have had no issues with enough plants coming up except this last year which was a very strange one weather wise. I appreciate the tips on pruning as I was never sure about that. I mainly use mine for Pesto.
I always encourage forking off
Please dont tell Basil to fork off!
I noticed this while I was editing haha. Once it goes to seed I usually tell it to fork off
@@CulinaryGarden1 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The dreamfarm garlic crusher is #1. Crushes even with skin on and can even eject the skin afterwards.
Definitely threw my brain for a loop when you said start in August. I'm in the USA (Florida). That's our February I think. Though I do think basil could grow all year round here. We don't get much of a winter.
As a Mexican who has grown avocado trees that bear edible gruit from a seed, please, get a grip 😂
That's good to know about the supermarket ones. I bought a basil plant from woollies 11 months ago and put it on the kitchen window sill, which is pretty shady. It's still growing - not well, but it's totally the little basil plant that could. I'll see if I can grow some from some seeds I collected.
Check the basil videos by Gardening at 58* North to see how to handle supermarket ones!
My Basil in North Waikato, NZ has been very slow despite hot days of late. Will try adding more fertiliser- I didn’t use premium potting mix. They’re only 1cm high and have been in for over a month (from seed). I got 100% germination tho 😊
I grew basil from seed for the first time this year. (Sydney) I sowed a lot of seeds directly into a bucket with good potting soil. Almost all turned into seedlings, so now I have a way overcrowded pot. Thank you for the info! I probably would have treated the whole thing like a supermarket pot of basil and just had them all compete for resources. Now I know to thin down to a few strong and well placed plants.
💚
What I did was make Pesto from all the store bought basil, when I tried to save it and transpalnt them. I even have a video of me making the pesto on my cahnnel ;)
Great video. Has helped me greatly. My basil suffers from something nibbling holes in the leaves. Any pointers?
I just bought cut basil from Coles and stuck it in a jar of water and now I have 20 bushy plants
Me too! Whatever I didn't eat from the package was wilted and looking pretty poor after being in the fridge. I didn't want to throw it out so I thought the leaves might come back if I stuck it in water. To my surprise, it grew roots! I have a few plants on my balcony now. Unfortunately, with the shorter days and the weather turning cold, my basil is turning yellow. Any advice?
have you ever considered the mighty avocados
